I was trying to make a pack wholly representative of the system and not just the amazing standouts. There are more bad/weird games on that system than there were like Gex and other highly polished games. I forgot I included guardian war in by the way. It didn't make the cut to me, but apparently got zipped in with the rest.

The reason why Doom for the 3do was so bad in terms of it's resolution was because of how rushed it was. They only gave the developer like 10 weeks to get the project off the ground. It's also the reason why the music for it is also really good. They didn't have time to program a sound driver for the console, so they brought in a band to perform the songs from the game.
MahjongNucleus the asshole that owns Art Data gave the one and only programer a retail of copy doom, not the source code. Thankfully she got into contact with Carmack himself and he gave them the Jaguar doom source code.
Doom on the saturn runs better than the 3DO one. holy shit. ... Now if only the Saturn could have had the OST from this one, it could have been less garbo...
To be honest I specifically started scrolling through the comments to see if anybody else made this comparison and I'm 100% absolutely not disappointed.
Apparently 3DO Doom was as bad of a port as it was because the guy managing it was horrifically incompetent, and seemed to genuinely believe that porting a game was as easy as pushing a button. The end result wasn't even finished which considering that it was developed in just ten weeks isn't exactly a surprise, and the one person responsible for actually coding the port under such harsh conditions outright stated that she only considered the final release "shippable" at best.
Burger Becky is a beast of a programmer. Porting the game in 10 weeks is no small feat. I just can't imagine how good it would have been if she had enough time to do it right. By the way, someone recently released a backport of 3DO Doom to the PC called Phoenix Doom. Definitely worth checking out, it runs at freakin 60 fps!

Intro translation: The 3DO Company basically tried to make the 3DO a set of guidelines and trademarks that could be licensed out to third-party manufacturers, just like the DVD standard. For multiple reasons, it didn’t work out as well in gaming as it did in audio or video.
As one of the very few people who had a 3DO growing up, I was happy to see this appear in my subs. It isn't an underappreciated system, but there are a few hidden gems in its library. If Vinny ever does a second part, I would recommend Crime Patrol, The Incredible Machine, Gex, Gridders, Jurassic Park, Cannon Fodder, and Trip'd.
I'm considering making the second part for him. I tried to choose the more "bad/weird" games because I didn't want to only show really good games, because I didn't think it was representative as the system as a whole. There were far more bad games than standouts like gex

It has a fascinating history, Trip Hawkins' semi-hairbrained attempt at reorganizing the whole industry in his favor. But he just couldn't get the third party ecosystem together, so there were no killer apps. I still have nostalgia for it though, warts and all.

The lack of good games and high price point definitely killed the system. Dude could have really been an important figurehead.
The 3do version of The Incredible Machine is great, I'd actually argue that it is better than the pc version. Props to the guys who designed and ported over that version of the game because they did a superb job, even down to the soundtrack. The main issue a lot of people had with 3do killing time at the time was the framerate which can be fixed with emulators due to the fact that we can overclock the virtual hardware to have killing time run smooth. Killing Time is one of those games where the pc and console version are essentially different games. Entirely different levels, models etcetera. I prefer the atmosphere and design of the 3do version though but the pc version plays better. Noticed Vinny also played monster manor which is also one of the better 3do titles (says a whole lot about the 3do huh). The developers of the game designed it with the intent to make sure it has solid performance on the system. If you ever played the game and wondered why the vomiting heads seemed stupidly op sometimes times was because of how they designed their vomit attack, each sprite that can spawn is proportional to the number of enemies left alive on the map (they never capped the projectile). Essentially, the less enemies the more of that stupid vomit shotgun can spawn. It does like what 10-20 damage and it can literally instantly hit you 20 times at point blank range when mostly everything on the map is dead. Guardian War is actually a great game and I used to love the cheesy metal boss music.

Of course, with the 3DO, the manufacturers were not also publishers, so there were no first-party games, so the console had to turn a profit at the point of sale.

Iron Angel of the apocalypse is the video game equivalent of a low budget 80' or 90's sci/horror movie that took itself really seriously and didn't deliver on the premise at all while being like 85% scenes where nothing happens at all.

Blade Force actually reviewed really well at the time of release. Next Generation magazine gave it a 5/5 , saying "This is easily one of the best games ever made, for 3DO or any system."
I remember working in a retro video game store a few years ago and some dude traded one of these babies in along with a few games, naturally I had to play with this thing. The one game that caught my eye the most was Immercenary of all things. After the trade I made it a goal to beat that fuckin game. It took roughly a couple months, and a lot of booze and weed. Once the chaos was over though, I felt empty. Nothing else would be able to fill that void.
The best part of Killing Time is the ending credits music, which is a happy New Orleans jazz song where the main villain sings about how you're trapped in the game forever and he's going to murder you. It's weirdly well produced and out of place.

When I downloaded the emulator a few years ago to see if I can boot up Monster Manor, I was instantly greeted by the screen with the white noise and a little message on the top left that said "give up". I played Immercenary as a 6 year old- weird shit, actually, everything on the 3DO was weird and eerie. And no, my parents weren't rich, actually very broke- my dad got the 3DO when the clearanced them off at like $100, same with the laser disk we had.
I would have loved the 3DO if I was born a few years earlier and was given that console. That virtual house game is aesthetic af. Wish there was some way to give it a more solid engine/tinker around with it so that it was more playable. And the killer clowns? The helicopter dude? The cheesy racing game with all the goofy live action characters? It's got this level of pure, real nostalgia in the way that doesn't include the glorified image of nostalgia since I never lived it. There's no word for this feeling, I can't place it
The PC version of Killing Time is also quite strange and the controls are almost as jank as 3DO (possibly worse), but at least it doesn't have killer ducks as enemies.
Iron Angel of the Apocalypse was the best part of this whole segment, this weird ass game with jumpscare logos that MIGHT have been cool if it released on PC 5 years later, accented perfectly with Vinny playing the world's loudest orgasm and fuckin Rem Lezar audio and perfectly timing the music to start with the start of the first stage, fuck it's perfect
I kinda like the 3DO. Of all the pre-PS1 CD consoles, it's probably my favorite. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Braindead 13 are all pretty good if you are into those sorts of games, Samurai Shodown and Super Street Fighter II Turbo are really good for their time, and the Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho fighters are fun if you are into weeb stuff. It's obviously pretty rough around the edges, but it has something of a unique flavor without being outright crap. It passes my "Needs at least 10 games worth playing" test so I kept it around.
Star Control 2 was hands down the best game for the system. I still think the game is underrated. You can play it for free, it's called The Ur-Quan Masters.
I played a army man 3do game on my ps2 I don’t know why but it worked cause I never had a 3do and as a stupid kid I put the cd in my ps2 not meant for it and it still worked Update tried it today to relive it on my old bulky ps2 the game and it still works hella scratched up but it In fact when booting up says 3do so I wasn’t making this up and I guess I found a cool alternative to play the black cd army men
3DO released games for PC, PlayStation and N64, Army men was one of their big series back in the day. In short, see if the disc has a PlayStation logo since PS2 is backwards compat.
FUN FACT: The 3DO has ZERO copy protection on it, meaning you can just burn games to CDs and use them in the actual console without any fiddling around.
I had the FZ-1 as a kid. Compared to the CD-I and Jaguar, I was more interested in the 3DO. The selling point for me was watching Full Motion Video during gameplay segments. It was hard to figure out where video games were headed during that time because it seemed like no other consoles were implementing FMV on their consoles and add-ons like the 32X were doing rather poorly. I learned after having a 3DO to wait until consoles came out with games that I truly wanted to play first instead of early-adopting.

The 3DO has some pretty alright ports of Super Turbo and Samsho, so there's that. The controller isn't great for them though, especially ST.

I played Immercenary as a 6 year old- weird shit, actually, everything on the 3DO was weird and eerie.
And no, my parents weren't rich, actually very broke- my dad got the 3DO when the clearanced them off at like $100, same with the laser disk we had.

I would have loved the 3DO if I was born a few years earlier and was given that console.
That virtual house game is aesthetic af. Wish there was some way to give it a more solid engine/tinker around with it so that it was more playable. And the killer clowns? The helicopter dude? The cheesy racing game with all the goofy live action characters? It's got this level of pure, real nostalgia in the way that doesn't include the glorified image of nostalgia since I never lived it. There's no word for this feeling, I can't place it
The PC version of Killing Time is also quite strange and the controls are almost as jank as 3DO (possibly worse), but at least it doesn't have killer ducks as enemies.

Iron Angel of the Apocalypse was the best part of this whole segment, this weird ass game with jumpscare logos that MIGHT have been cool if it released on PC 5 years later, accented perfectly with Vinny playing the world's loudest orgasm and fuckin Rem Lezar audio and perfectly timing the music to start with the start of the first stage, fuck it's perfect
John 3DO knows what sacrifices to make: all of Doom so that Monster Manor can run peachy-smooth.
I kinda like the 3DO. Of all the pre-PS1 CD consoles, it's probably my favorite. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Braindead 13 are all pretty good if you are into those sorts of games, Samurai Shodown and Super Street Fighter II Turbo are really good for their time, and the Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho fighters are fun if you are into weeb stuff.
It's obviously pretty rough around the edges, but it has something of a unique flavor without being outright crap. It passes my "Needs at least 10 games worth playing" test so I kept it around.

Syndicate and Road Rash are awesome 3DO games. I like Wing Commander III and Lost Eden for the stories.

Star Control 2 was hands down the best game for the system. I still think the game is underrated. You can play it for free, it's called The Ur-Quan Masters.

I played a army man 3do game on my ps2 I don’t know why but it worked cause I never had a 3do and as a stupid kid I put the cd in my ps2 not meant for it and it still worked
Update tried it today to relive it on my old bulky ps2 the game and it still works hella scratched up but it In fact when booting up says 3do so I wasn’t making this up and I guess I found a cool alternative to play the black cd army men
3DO released games for PC, PlayStation and N64, Army men was one of their big series back in the day. In short, see if the disc has a PlayStation logo since PS2 is backwards compat.

Dude, I just hooked up my 3do yesterday to mess around with it, and now I find this. Stop following me.
FUN FACT: The 3DO has ZERO copy protection on it, meaning you can just burn games to CDs and use them in the actual console without any fiddling around.
I'm sad he didn't mention that. That seemed to be the only "good" thing about the 3do

Escape from Monster Manor looks like an updated version of Nitemare 3D.
I had the FZ-1 as a kid. Compared to the CD-I and Jaguar, I was more interested in the 3DO. The selling point for me was watching Full Motion Video during gameplay segments. It was hard to figure out where video games were headed during that time because it seemed like no other consoles were implementing FMV on their consoles and add-ons like the 32X were doing rather poorly. I learned after having a 3DO to wait until consoles came out with games that I truly wanted to play first instead of early-adopting.
