Hi there. My name is Sue. I have a formal and wedding dress business and have several decades' sewing experience. You and your dress will be gorgeous on your wedding day! Would you mind if I offered some advice? I love your original inspiration dress. I would recommend buying the same pattern for the basic sheath in a size matching your upper chest, not your full bust measurement. Next, resize the full bust, if needed. You may meed to shorten your back bodice and possibly the front bodice area. Try to find another pattern with a huge bow...I think Vogue has a new one now on an evening dress. Restyle or resize the piece as you desire it to be. Line the entire two-layered pieces with a couple layers of tulle, and possibly place horsehair braid along the outer seam edges only. Then drape separate long bias cut pieces for the bow streamers. You may want to put one or two layers of tulle into the double- layered streamer sections. Use as many streamers as you need to achieve the look you want. I would keep the one shoulder style. That will look great on you and is the current trend. Good luck, have a blessed wedding, and CONGRATULATIONS!!
Hi Sue! Thank you for your suggestions. You really know what you are doing! If I had more time I would try them 😉 but given my full time job and upcoming travel schedule, I don’t think I can make it happen. For now I’ve just ordered the Solace London dress and plan to wear it on my wedding day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise ❤️
Absolutely the right decision, Toni, to cut yourself some slack by removing the stress of making the dress. You should allow yourself the joy of just anticipating your wedding to a wonderful man, followed by a fun honeymoon. Well done, kiddo.
I think you made the right decision. Nobody needs xtra stress. But your video was still very helpful. I enjoyed watching your fitting and draping process. You also showed us that in real life sometimes things don’t go as planned. It is disappointing but we have to pick ourselves up and do a plan b sometimes. Thanks for the video. Look forward to what you show next!
Thank you for your comment. Each day that passes confirms it was the right decision to reduce my stress. My dealing skills aren’t bad, they just weren’t up for this challenge. I’m glad you enjoyed that part. I debated editing it out of the video. Thank you for watching 😊
Grandma and Jennifer! A star studded video! You're great and regardless of what dress you wear that day, you'll be the most beautiful woman in the room.
Solid decision. I made my MOB dress. But I didn’t start with an aspiration. I started with what’s in my comfortable skill level with the time I had and finding the fabric much later than I wanted to. So I did a wrap and lengthened it. It wasn’t a joy. And I wasn’t the bride. So good for you. I bet you could make a stunner of your base dress though. Because it fits like a dream now and Looks great. Enjoy.
You are the second viewer to suggest that I keep working with the base dress. Yes you’re right, I did get the fit down perfectly. Now to just even out the darts and I’ll have a beautiful dress 😊
I love that you share the real process. I’m back to sewing it’s been a fast 50 years since I was an almost perfect size 10 in patterns and now I’m about four different sizes depending on what you measure. I love that grandma helped you and her insight was helpful to me too about adjusting the darts. I also have a slimmer above bust. Nothing much else slim at this point. Anyhow very sympathetic to your juggling. BTDT So happy you found love. Have fun
I don’t have any sewing helpers so I am jealous! Plus having Grandma with all her experience and I am green with envy. I just caught the end and I get that you want to make sure you have a dress ready on time Weddings are stressful enough without that extra worry.
The dress was turning into the biggest stress despite my best attempts to work it out. Making clothes for the honeymoon will be a better use of my time AND be a faster process!
I love your strength and realism, life and time is going to trip you up. And it is unbelievably hard to make a decision like you had to make in this video. Know that, I loved watching you work through your dress process, it was beautiful. Today you showed your bravery and your loss was heart breaking. Keep making these beautiful plans. The material will wait for your skills to grow. I look forward to seeing the next 'less stressful' project come together. And we will be here for when you drape again.🙂
I think it’s a wise decision to move on and concentrate on making dresses for the honeymoon. It’s sad that it didn’t work out, but you could make something out of the basic pattern now that it fits perfectly. Good luck with the new dress!
Thank you! I feel better now that I made the decision. Honeymoon sewing will be more fun and less stressful. I’ll hang on to the pattern for the base dress. It will still look beautiful in the purple silk shantung.
Thank you for sharing your journey with honesty! We can all relate! I think you were brave and tenacious in your attempt--I'd have given up way before you did, with lots of cussing to go with it! I'm sure the dress you ordered will look fabulous. Where will you go for your honeymoon?
Thanks Toni, and again, congratulations! You will be a beautiful bride. I wish all good things for you and your husband in your marriage. If I can be of any help to you in the future, don't hesitate to ask. I enjoy watching your videos. We all learn together. Sue
I'm sorry your plans didn't work out, but please show us how that dress is put together once you get it. I'm so curious now. I hope you have a wonderful wedding!
Oh my gosh, girl, can I relate to your dilemma, disappointment and resolve. Wow, what a pickle. By now, I know you've resolved your predicament, sewed your honeymoon clothes, had your wedding and gone on with your life. But I had to comment because your video was quite moving. I truly feel for you as I have been in the same boat, not just with my own clothes, but in making a wedding gown for a friend. I admire and respect your acceptance and willingness to face the time constraint and balance your desire with your stress level. Good for you. Why ruin the run up to your wedding trying achieve what was likely an unrealistic image because the photo was manipulated (as evidenced by the dress you purchased off Net-a-porter). Thank you a million times over for being so honest as to share your failure with us so that we all may achieve success in the future. Oh, and congratulations on your nuptials.
Jan, you are way braver than I am to make a wedding dress for someone else! I appreciate your comment ❤️The wedding was just perfect. Then I had a great honeymoon and got lots of compliments on my outfits.
Thank you for sharing all of this with us! It was a wonderful opportunity to do some work with Grandma and Jenn. Those experiences are to be cherished. I applaud your decision to shift to making other things for your honeymoon. It is brave to make changes in a plan! Have fun with the sewing!! You are an amazing woman!! Remember that. All the best!
I would have converted the darts into a princess seam to remove the excess in the neckline. The drape would have obscured those seams. What a project! I hope you get a chance to use your muslin into something else you would love to wear.
I had a similar pattern that had princess seams and one shoulder. But then there would have been a center back seam with a zipper which didn’t work with the original design. But yes maybe I will end up making the on shoulder dress in the future.
Sorry that it didn’t go the way you wanted it to. I totally feel your pain on fitting yourself. Learning pattern drafting on my own and fitting myself 99% of the time, it’s taking a looong time. Good decision at the end. No more stress is needed. Focus on the wedding itself.
Thank you Juliana. I’ve never faced such complicated fit issues by myself. It was definitely the right decision and now I know I’ll have something to wear!
Toni, my heart broke a little when you decided to buy the dress instead. I love and admire your determination, bravery and skill for attempting to make the dress yourself. All of that being said, self preservation first! I admire your ability to say when enough is enough! Yes, put your valuable time and resources into the fun, less stressful projects! As a full time employee, part time sewist, i know how scarce time and energy can be. So proud of you for your ambition. 🎉
Aww thank you. Trust me it was a very difficult decision to buy the dress. I’d looked at it a week earlier and decided to keep trying. Then after another week of unsuccessful draping it was just time to call it quits. Today was a very long day at court and I’m glad I don’t have to stress about making my wedding dress. Thank you for your comment ❤️
Hey Toni, how I loved watching this process!! Thank you so much for your skill, openness and vulnerability, and the way you made it so real by just being yourself and being honest. I haven't yet seen anything about your wedding, I'm new to your channel, but am sending you a big bag of gratitude for all I've learned through you sharing your thoughts here.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching, I’m glad you found my channel. There are several more videos about the wedding dress process. The last came out on October 13. Let’s just say it all tuned out better than expected and it was a fabulous wedding. 😉
I’m pretty sure you could’ve done it if you had more time and gotten a better look at the actual dress. I’m happy you were able to purchase the dress! That’s awesome!
I fit waist darts after the bodice from the shoulder thru the bust to the waist is aligned and fit. You can mark the original waist darts on the outside of the muslin and then adjust them later when the fit above the waist is where you want it. I cant wait to see the finished dress! I love this process!
If I were getting married , I would not pick anything too complicated & too time consuming to the point I'm not gonna get anything else done , pick something stylish yet that you know will look good & eye catching , I would have started my dress way back in the spring , sew I could really take my time , well I wish you all the very best of luck , I'm praying you get that dress 👗 together in time for your special in day ❤🙏🏾
I just got engaged on March 16, so starting in the spring wasn’t really an option. Plus, where’s the fun in making something that isn’t spectacular? I tried and it didn’t work out. Thankfully I found the dress in my size and I can get it in time. Things didn’t go as planned but everything will work out in the end. And that’s what matters 😉
(Linda). Hi Toni, I think you have made a fantastic decision!! You were putting way too much stress on yourself to make this dress. Admittedly this is a very complex dress to make and in my opinion unless you are a seamstress and do this day in day out it might..i say might have doable. So don't be sad or beat yourself up, you 'tried'. Wishing you all the best xx
Hi Linda. Thank you for your support. It was not a decision I made lightly because I really wanted to make my dress. But it didn’t work out. And things weren’t getting better by spending more time on it. As time passes, I know it was the right decision ❤️
Thanks Brenda. I can honestly say that I tried my best and it didn’t work out. I’m sure I will be happy wearing the original design and I will be much less stressed between now and the wedding.
Thanks Maxine! I remember you were ready to take them out 🤣 no costuming for me this year. The director, who canned my costumes last minute, got fired! Good riddance.
I am sorry your plans for the wedding dress didn't work out. I admire your resiliance and believe working on your honeymoon wardrobe will be exciting! I look forward to seeing the reveal.

Grandma is cool. This makes me miss my grandma. Cherish these memories!
Grandma is the best. She’s so much fun to hang out with.
Nice seeing Grandma again, she's so sharp!
