Word Problems using trigonometry and bearings

  • 👉 Learn how to solve the word problems with trigonometry. Word problems involving angles, including but not limited to: bearings, angle of elevations and depressions, triangles problems etc are solved using trigonometry. To be able to solve these problems it is important that you have a grasp of the major trigonometric identities, the Pythagoras rule, the sine rule and the cosine rule.
    Just like every word problem, the key to solving a trigonometric word problem is understanding the problem, then represent the information in the problem geometrically (with a diagram). This will give you the full view of the known and the unknown information and also provides you with the best approach to solving the problem.

    An easier method to solve this :
    1. Using cos rule to find distance from port to final point (use (180-15) to find the angle).
    2. Now that you have the 3 sides of the triangle, use cos rule to find the angle, i.e the bearing of final point from the port (= answer).

    I wanted to try the SSS law of cosine on this to see if I could get anything and it didn't work at all for me so I think I'll stop trying to do things on my own and just follow what you did here, thank you

    Could you please solve this :
    An aircraft flies 500 km on a bearing of 100 and then 600km on a bearing of 160. Find the distance and bearing of the finishing point from the starting point.
    I really like ur explanation.
