    I've been implementing a lot of Josh's teachings and I was able to break a nearly year long bench platue and cut 30 lbs. I was really skeptical at first cause a lot of the movements seemed so counter intuitive, but he has really done his research looking at probably a century of documented strength training and knows what works.

      Absolutely, this is the hardest bench variation I have tried for me it kind of beats up my shoulders so I have to be careful with it

      i think because i did them on the incline and i was pressing near the clavicle

      Doing it on an incline, any incline, is much harder than flat. Its best with a slight incline if you are going to do that, dont lift it near your clavicle, that would indeed be hard on your shoulders. It is a GREAT exercise though.

      I was this morning years old when I realized that the pin press I thought I've been doing was in fact a dead press lol.
      They're slightly different, as the pins are a bit higher on the pin press, to work the top and middle portion of the lift.

    i used to do that only the barbell was a bit higher than touching my chest which developed my triceps tremendously but my coach said it was useless so i changed coach. this is a great exercise and doesnt require you to do any accessorie exercises because it is an accessorie its self it almost isolates the trics. great video

    Spoto press and deadbench are king when you have trouble at the bottom

      Cantthinkofaname def gonna try this . Been getting stuck at the bottom for a while now . I thought it was because of my weak triceps bow im working them more and getting stronger gonna use this to try to get to 225 soon

      Ahmed Ismail weak at the bottom isnt triceps my friend. Your triceps help with the lockout(not saying you should train triceps less) but definetly try this and spoto press and dont forget about your Barbell OHP standing or sitting. Hell maby even both 1 on your bench day and the other one on your shoulder day.

    I've been training for about 20 years, the last handful of years these are the only kind of pressing with the bar I do. I train alone in my home gym with these I can go to failure. I do these with dumbbell presses also with a dead stop on the chest on each rep and dips.

    what percentage of max do you recommend for dead presses. I surprised how much heavier the weight felt when trying them the first time.

    I've always thought lifts done without any stretch reflex or muscular tension during the 'lowering' part of a lift provide a far better metric of 'instantaneous' strength then someone who can "GET TIGHT"

    Looks like a pin press to me just slightly lower on the starting position. What's the difference?

      That is the difference..pin press works mid to lockout of the movement.. dead press works the bottom

    I am trying to progress with my dead bench press but I've been stuck. I cannot lift more than 1x225 for months now or more than 10x185. I use this type of bench now since I always train alone. My regular bench press PR use to be 280! This particular lift along with military press (barely 10x115) are killing my ego lol. Any help guys??

    I do a floor press bottom up, is that about the same as the dead press?

      no it is not, they focus on two different things. Any floor press, off pins or not, will not be the same as this as you cant get the bar fully down to its normal bottom position. Unless you have some really funky arms I guess.

      Vincent Tremblay Fitness no one of the key points is starting the lift from the bottom up if you do a floor press you are beginning the movement by lowering the weight the point of the dead press is to lift the weight from a dead position you start the movement by lifting the weight and you don’t do reps

    When I did this we called it a floor press. I put the safety bars an inch above the chest and would get a liftoff since that is where your gonna hurt yourself. I would alternate with my reg. BP every other week.

      hawg427 with a real floor press you lie on the floor and still have the eccentric portion of the movement until your triceps are on the floor where you then push , a floor press builds lockout strength where as this is for starting strength both are great for overloading the bench

      Yeah great idea make sure to use a lot of bands and also make sure that when you film it to set the camera up so nobody can see the bands

      Well the bands would make the ascend off the pins the easiest thing, basically ruining the whole point of the dead bench. So no, doubt that bands would help here. Unless you set them up as extra resistance ofc.

    Dead press is the real deal for strong benching, just pure strength. I hope powerlifting should be focusing on pushing dead bench than regular bench press.

    Ive known 3 advanced lifters now who have hurt themselves with this exercise. This when used with heavy weight, over 3 plates for my training partner and I, has caused tremendous joint strain. Just my 2 cents.

      You only use these for like 7 to 8 week blocks. I have done them effectively for years and no issues. Are you trying to move to much weight?

      @@twinrivers6200 It was in Josh Bryants program. We got up to 364 for the multiple singles required then ditched it soon after. More than 2 years ago, hard to remember if we ever got into the 400s

      @@MongoPowerlifting gotcha they can be rough on the joints. I used to do them for 3 week blocks, once at the beginning of a 12 week block and then again at the end before maxing but lately have just been doing them the last 6 weeks of the block and for me they work best like that.

    People with long arms don't have an advantage when pushing the weight off their chest. If anything that's the hardest part because they're in such a weak position with poor leverage when the bar is on their chest

      dumwee But his explanation didn't really make sense. No matter how much elastic tension you have, it won't make up for the loss of leverage. The lower you have to lower the bar, the harder it will be to get it off your chest. If you don't believe me, just set a boxed deck of cards on your chest and lower the bar to it and pause, then press. It will be far easier than if you went all the way down because your arms are in a better mechanical advantage.

    What does the word deadlift have to do with a pin press? Saying deadlift and dead press over and over means absolutely nothing. Can't wait for more secrets that entail calling something everyone is familiar with by a different name. Great content. :)

      A pin press is where you start with your arms extended, deadbench is the reverse, and you let the momentum die.

      ryan rogers have at it. He's referring to a "cluster set" protocol which, if you get anything out of this debate, can be quite helpful in building strength. And that can be applied to any lift, not just this variant. I suggest you give it a try.

      Your comment is years old but I have the same problem. I‘m 6‘4 with a 6‘7 wingspan.
      I couldn‘t bench press more than 66lbs for 3/3/3 reps (I‘ve startet last week tbf).
      I can do 61lbs biceps curls for 10/5/5 reps without problems.
      Could you figured it out after these years?

      @@LaVey1999 I'm not that bad, my shoulder points are 24 inches across and I have arms of a man 6ft4-6ft5 I wear 32 long dress shirts and in my youth i could bench past 300 deadlift 3-400lbs and squat 750+lbs not bad for a guy built like a american defensive lineman, that never lifted weights out of highschool

      Hardly anyone likes to admit they're roided mate, that's not a very strong argument. However, 200 kilo is definitely achievable, especially if he's a heavyweight.

      I'm also very skeptical when people with 200kg+ in the bench claim to be natural. I would only believe it's possible if I achieved it myself. The highest bench press before the steroid era was 165kg by Joe Nordquest. You can't know for sure that any lifter from the 1940s and onwards has built their strength naturally.

He is a dreadful teacher, anyone listening can see he is a dreadful teacher on this video and so it makes no difference what he does or who he does it with, his teaching style here would be best served reviewing burgers.
