So many gems of information, backfilling the brood nest with nectar when preparing to swarm is definitely what I’ll be checking for next inspection. But by far the best gem is to do the front of your suit up when going into pissy queenless colonies 😂😂😂
Going on fishing trip for 10 days I had 20 some extra cells .. I placed them cells in nursery frame then placed them in cell starter .. cells still had few days before hatching .. to my surprise they all hatched grew into these huge virgins .. some reason they grew much larger than the other half of the graft I had placed in mating nucs. Only difference they were not mated .. I couldn't just walk them bees just wanted to ball them. 24 hours in cage placed in the nucs they excepted them just fine.
If you know your own bees won’t kill the virgins you can usually get away with it I’m not saying it works for everybody I’m just saying in the majority of cases after you have colonies that have swarmed they’re expecting a virgin Queen so introduce a virgin queen and see what happens because it’s the norm in this scenario
Sir do, 😲 Your bank- what is the going interest rate 🤣 🤣 🤣. That is beautiful and all inspiring I hope some beekeepers can follow your lead. Stay safe & healthy 2 do 🐝 keeping 2 morrow 👋.
Perfect timing for this video. You taught me to graft a few years ago. I think I have this perfected with my own adaptions. Just adding virgins this week. Made the same mistake you did and got stung just above the Adams apple last night. What fun. The question I have is about marking virgins. Lots of older bee keepers are dead set against this. I was going to try it out on half my virgins. Then I noticed you'd marked yours. What would your advice be. I'm guessing mark away?
Technically indefinitely, good question. In most cases it comes down too the fact that their queens and they should be laying. Always get queens in as soon as possible. And if you have to bank them, ensure they have lots of nurse bees, I mean lots!!
I feel your pain, I hate getting stung on face or neck. Really appreciate the information on banking the queens. So timely for what I'm doing the next couple of days.
My son and I found 2 Virgin queens walking on the ground. We were so startled it never occurred me to cage them. of course I had one of my biggest hives open and things were a little crazy at the moment. I should have caged them but I just finally took them and threw them in the Queenless hives. big mistake. I'm so sad.
Exactly what I needed to know for this weekend. Been panicking I didn't have nucs ready or the time. Can only visit my apiary this weekend but queen's hatch Tues and I need the extra week to build the nucs I need. Not sure if I can turn them on their side before they hatch? Or will they be OK if left upright for a few days?
What is your acceptance rate when introducing virgins? Do you feed them sugar water when introducing? Heard it helps raise acceptance rate. Got stung yesterday on the ankle, couldn't walk in the night haha, usually I don't even notice stings anymore except for the Sting (no more swelling). But damn that hurt.
I banked a load of queens the other day and put the wrong bung in. The bung had a hole and I lost the whole lot …duuuuh I bank queens every year and usually keep them for up to 3 months without an issue👍 Always handy to have to keep colonies strong and queen right
Thanks Queens have known to be overwintered and then inseminated the following spring however this is a rare occurrence and they say the maximum time you should bank any coins for when they’re in the virgin state is approximately 10 to 15 days. For this you need a full colony of nurse Bees and lots of food additional food given to the colony to make sure that those nurse bees feed the virgins well. Failure to release the virgins or to use them any later will mean that will just probably b ecome drone layers I can’t stress enough the urgency of not banking Queens. The bankking of queens in the virgin state will decrease their natural ability to go off in mate you really need to have them banked for a maximum of 10 days if you expect good returns from your queens. Consider it as I say in the video a good useful tool in the last resort if you have no other choice but the best scenario is to have your Queens released within the first couple of days into a colony that is expecting to have a virgin Queen
I have put nurse bees into each cage previously but this year I didn’t and found it works just the same. The problem is the time it takes to put nurseries in each cage if you have plenty of virgins and you don’t mind losing one or two I feel the time isn’t justified for the benefits. Because I don’t feel there is any real benefits
With nurse bees in the cage to groom her and help with feeding, I have very high survival rates (85+%) well beyond 3 days. With no nurse bees in cage I experience low survival (50%) after just two days and pretty much all of them dead on the fourth day. Whether it is worth putting bees in or not depends on how many ‘extra’ queens you have in the queue and how soon you can get them into hives. Short bank of one day, no helpers. Longer bank of 2-6 days, definitely helpers.
@@billybobbarker3175 yes, I’ve tried it with both. And better survival with nurse bees in the cage, but other factors do influence the survival rates. Nectar flows and intensity of nurse bees as you so rightly say!! 👍🐝🙌
🤣 Ioved the horse winny overlay! Sorry about the sting, that had to hurt! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
I was laughing out loud with your horse sounds over the stings!😂

Ha Richard I thought u had to introduce the virgin the same way as a mated queen in a cage for about 2-3 days then release her this is great thanks

How long can you bank queens

Very nice. How long are you able to bank virgins vs how long are you able to bank mated queens before you notice problems?

I've been on roll like 3 days keep getting stung between the eyes .. 3 to 4 times aday they sneak in. I need new jacket

Richard, how long can those banked queens stay in a hive? Days, weeks or months? And thank you for your time.

Richard. Do the nurse bees feed the virgins through the cages you bank them in? Thanks.
Yes the bees on the outside feed them through the cage walls. Just added another to compliment this one, on the virgin queen and feeding
Do you re queen every season?
I love country side of France
Hello
Nice video.
I would like to do some of the artificial insemination training. Where can I do that please
😍😍😍😍😍🐝🐝🐝🐝😍🐝🐝🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍👍👍
🙏🙏😌
No artificial insemination ?
Hi Benjamin, we try to where we can but usually it’s a two yearly process.
Lol I was so confused where the horse was
Come On Bro. You wear the suit in the van but you do not zip it with the bees....
😡😡.I know that hurt .
I think your swearing was justified.
