Hi Bob, interesting how the love of flowers seems to be strong with most beekeepers...my 1st job was working at a greenhouse, i think that started it for me, flowers are wonderful!
Well at least King Bob is the sponge. You can wear it at night and have sweet dreams knowing that beekeeping is a virtue. The sponge is just used for cleaning and is then thrown away! Really Bob you have many admirers. My admiration is not for the great business or the excellence in beekeeping that your team is but the fact that you have taught us all how to be better people in our communities.
Revolutionary War era title if I recall correctly. The Indians caught up in drama referred to a white woman as War Woman. But oh yah some days just about any bee yard could be called war woman.
This year I planted/grew from seed, California poppy and bachelor buttons in huge patches. The honeybees have been all over them and they have continuously bloomed all summer - a big plus. Have been collecting seeds from both but fighting the goldfinches for bachelor button seed heads as they are gobbling them up faster than I can get out to harvest. Might be a nice addition to your flower beds next year.
Another great video. Fun and informative. We all appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge. Between you and Ian both using bee escapes, I decided to try them last year and now prefer this method over fume boards.
I made my bee escapes with too shallow of a rim so I just added a spacer like this. It worked fine. Nice to have this little accessory around when you need it. Thanks for the great video “King” Bob. 😊

I like escapes rather than other means of removing 🐝 usually also…usually…less handeling seems to = less casualties usually. Even to just remove a single frame with 🐝 on it I’d prefer adding a super with exits rather than shaking off 🐝(‘s). Gonna feature use of exits on my TH-cam channel also.

Hi Bob! You could try without cold storage. On the bottom should be some kind of inner cover with expanded aluminum grid (it's something that we in Europe use a lot), then stack supers like you did on pallets. On top another inner cover (like shim with expanded aluminum grid) and then cover on top. Some beekeepers put on top on last super some jar with formic acid to prevent wax-moth, some put only 9 frames per super... that's for everyone to find out for himself. All the best!
the farm where I have my bees has sunflowers. The bees are all over them. There are three patches about 6 acres each. They make more money growing those than growing their pick your own foods. People come in to pick the flowers or get engagement pictures and wedding pictures. Apparently it's a big thing in parts of the country. All I know is I put supers on and after checking yesterday, they are slowly being filled. I hope they fill them before the japanese knot weed begins to bloom. I want a nice sunflower honey.
Making your own gear does save a lot of money, those little shims made of scrap wood? I bet they're way over priced at the supply store. I do migratory lids and bottom boards (wax dipped) and this has been a vital part at making this viable.

The only thing I’ve found with the whole weight aspect of honey is that there’s always a portion of honey left in the wets, which needs to be accounted for.
After you subtract the wax and stuff you probably lose several pounds off the honey weight but that’s still a lot of weight way more honey than you think could be in such a small space thanks for sharing love watching The sunflowers out front is those real hives to the left of the video clip you showed of building just wondering because it is so close to the front of your building and the risk of bees and customers being so close

The ones we are using are from Mann Lake and Rossmans Apiaries and both work the same. I have not tried Dadant's but I've not heard any bad reports about them.
I have another question sir,I removed supers on friday September 22nd it’s now Sunday September 24th I went to feed the colonies and found possibly 10-15 undeveloped bees ( brood) on bottom board entrance, without seeing it would you guess drone pupae? This is a fairly large colony single deep which made 3 mediums of capped honey. Just wondering your thoughts. Thanks again!
Okay, Bob, I tried it. BAD RESULT!! The robber bees figured out how to navigate the bee escape in less than 48 hours!! Lots of them!! I definitely learned something! @@bobbinnie9872
There is more to the story. The lid over the supers was not tight so the bees were not going in through the bee escape that I know of. I am not sure I will try this again!
Sorry to hear that. I will be mindful to mention in a future video that people in in an area with a high beetle population could have issues after a couple of days, especially with older comb.

Hey great news my bugs have started capping buckwheat honey 😂 I havent eaten that scince the early 80s . I brought a full drone comb home scratched it and gravity is emptying it into a cooky tray . Theresa tried it and does not like it . More for me !!! Check out the price on the google 😂
I extracted my first frame of buckwheat honey . I Scratched it and laid it in a cooky tray for a few days . 1/2a small jar 🎉 If goldenrod tastes like old socks you should try this stuff . Its low grade being diluted with canola clover and alfalfa . 😂 to quote Chevy Chase I like it !!
Once the frames for our medium size honey supers are drawn out they are all put in boxes with eight frame spacers. None of our deep boxes get spacers because they may get used for brood chamber boxes which we always run with ten frames.
Hello Bob. Great video. Question. Aren’t all, or at least most, Caucasian queen bees black or grey in color? And don’t they produce bees that are grey and or black in color? I ask because I ordered a Caucasian queen from Winters Apiary and both the queen and bees looked like Italians? Please share your thoughts. Grateful.
I asked Sue Cobey this question about color when she was the person bringing in Caucasian semen from The Republic Of Georgia. She answered that although most Caucasian bees are dark, gray or mixed, occasionally a bit of yellow can show up because on the Turkish side of the country there is more yellow in the Caucasians. Our breeder queens tend to be dark and although some yellow may occur I would question large amounts of yellow.

I used a Ceracell bee escape under 2 supers a couple years ago and forgot to go back for quite a bit of time, can’t remember how long, and both supers were slimed.I have been reluctant to use the bee escapes ever since. I was under the impression that the bees would not leave if the nights did not get cool but I think I was just not leaving them on long enough. Thank you for your time.

We do both depending on circumstances. Singles are usually late spring nucs built up for Sourwood.

We're not as worried about appearance as we could be and admittedly our honey doesn't look as clean as many beekeepers. We only wait a week or more.
When your bee yard was smaller did you every try the powder sugar method for treatment?
No, but I followed studies done by The University Of Georgia which discouraged me from doing it.

Any reason you dont make honey towers with the bee escapes on the bottom? Could stack 5-6 boxs on an escape.
We could but it might take too long for all the bees to exit. Hive beetles could become an issue.

It could be drones. Be careful about food in a strong single after removing all supers. They can run out of food fast and starve.

I know there's tons of variables, but on average, what is the most colonies per yard before the amount of honey each colony brings goes down?
In a major honey flow in our area I would say an average of 60.

1.5 parts water x 1 part sugar.
Is that oxytetracycline in with the powder sugar.

I put four boxes on top of bee escapes for four days, 16 boxes total, and lost 2 boxes to small hive beetle larvae.

That is about the limit in our area. Farther south that wouldn't work.

Plastic frames work fine but wood as a personal choice I guess. Rite Cell, Acorn or Pierco on deep. Rite Cell, Acorn, Pierco or Premier on mediums.

How many supers can I use above a bee escape when temperatures are in the high 80’s and how long can I leave the bee escapes on.
It depends on wether you have hive beetle issues in your area. Here we try to keep it at four or less for no more than five days.
