I can maybe tolerate Naofumi's "If you kill him, it makes you as bad as him" thing, maybe. BUT what the anime did to the Queen was just unacceptable. They turned a powerful character who didn't leave things to chance and worked towards the outcome she wanted through charisma and diplomacy into a passive character. Everything the Queen said during the trial part had purpose, it was calculated. She even used real tricks that work, like when she proposed the unreasonable idea that Naofumi marries Bitch and followed up with the much more reasonable proposal of marrying Melty (tho of course that one still has problems with Naofumi's modern sense of morality).
You must not have read the light novel because Naufumi's aversion to marrying Melty has nothing to do with anything but his pathological aversion to all women. Sure there are many other reasons he might object but they are waaaaay down his list and far after "dear GOD please don't let girls ever touch me or require me to ever touch girls!" That's why the kiss at the end of season one had to be such a downer for anyone who then went and read the source material and realized not only did that kiss never happen, it ain't ever gonna happen, and Naufumi is so women-phobic now that he's literally going to get all physical contact in the future from a magic raccoon he merged with some of Raphtalia's hair. Because he's THAT messed up in the head about women.

Short version, they nerfed the Queen's wrath for the same reason they neerfed Naofumi's, because the Anime was produced for export and their Manga/LN behavior is not morally acceptable for "good" aligned characters in the West. Long version? TH-cam censored my attempts to explain, go watch some videos on Individualism and Collectivism. It indirectly explains a lot of the censorship you see in exported Anime.
Maybe its because I watched the dub but I interpreted the ending to be that Naofumi was going to stay only for as long as it took for Raphtalia and Filo to find happiness. Being ignorant of the fact he is the source of Raphtalia's happiness.

Yeah it pretty much goes down hill the second they prevented Raph from going for the kill on the slaver, because character flaws be damned and having real stakes in situations you are personally invested in can simply be dropped like it was nothing. Oh sure downplay the trauma of a child watching their friends be tortured to death.
I was gonna say, I don't think Raphtalia killing that scumbag would've lost her, her Best Girl of the Year award. Sure she's sweet, kind, but she's also a warrior and someone who's suffered a lot. I really can't see her taking revenge as a negative.

The biggest change was done to the queen - she went from badass authority with an iron fist who gets shit done and fixes her family's mistake in the most brutal possible way, to a coward who is willing to kill herself and abandon her kingdom and her 11 years old daughter because she was too weak to propose another solution rather than execution! And in doing so, the anime made Naofumi a far whiter character rather than the morally deep grey, damaged person he is in the original! For those who don't know, in the original, Naofumi yells to the top of his lungs that he wants Myne and the King dead, that only their deaths will satisfy him. The Queen intervenes saying he has the absolute right to choose their fates, since he was the biggest victim of their crimes, but then suggests far worse punishments than death, that even Naofumi himself is taken aback and thinks she's crazy. That's when they decide eternal public humiliation is a far more fitting punishment, given their egos. I am honestly not happy with the changes they made. I want to see a Blue Exorcist treatment, where the sequel ignores the anime changes and pretends everything went according to the source material, and maybe even Clear Arc introduction, where the "episode 0" of season 2 retells events of the previous season but focuses on making audiences understand the previous ending has been retconned (though it retcons the retcon later on, we can keep that out).
They could use those crystal orb recording devices to retcon it in a way, the version we saw was the edited version to make Naofumi look better by the Queen. And her shadows could be the ones who recorded it.
@@maxjojo917 Oh yeah, the anime made Naofumi far more heroic than he actually is. The truth is that Naofumi is broken and vengeful! Usually it's Raphtalia who keeps him in check. But that's not the only "Mistake" the anime made, the entire last arc (L'arc's arc, no pun intended) should have been put as the opening arc for the second season, because THAT'S WHEN THE GAME CHANGES! Season 1 should have been Naofumi's struggle with the false rape accusations, ending with his name being cleared and Bitch and Trash's judgement being passed down. It's starting from L'arc's appearance that the narrative shifts to focus on the nature of the Waves and the multiple worlds at play, so that shouldn' have been the closing arc for season 1, but rather the opening for season 2!
All I'm immediately hoping with Season 2 is that Naofumi and Itsuki's - the Bow Hero - interaction stays the same. The keep it as spoiler free as possible Risha ended up in a similar situation as Naofumi before she got kicked out and that tore open so fresh wounds on our shield bro who didn't take to kindly to it. Not only was his response incredible; it gave a clear definition to the gap in power between him and the other Heroes.

At the current latest light novel volume 22 Naofumi is still believes he will go back to Japan after his job is done, he ackowlages the world has people he cares about in he actively hates the world itself and still wants out, you can get a sort of vibe from this whenever Naofumi is in the Hunting Hero's world as he is alot more playful and humourful while over there.
I'm only on volume 14 (trying to catch up as fast as I can) but what I wonder about is if Naofumi is the only one of the four heroes that *can* go home. Because the spear, bow and sword heroes all died in Japan and seemed to have been resurrected in this world, whereas there was no indication Naofumi (or Kizuna) died, they just seemed to be summoned. So I wonder if the other heroes would even be able to go back if they wanted to.
I'm glad this change happened since the suspense on if Naofumi still hates this world feels like unnecessary edginess like how sadistic he looked during the trial of Isekai Fle (Gundam seed B*ch) and Trash

I've been thinking of one change for S2 which imho would improve the story. Basically just change the climax of vol 6. My problem with it in the books is that it feels redundant, it's almost comparable to movies or tv shows where the main couple gets together at the end only for them to split up in the sequel and get together again. Vol 6&7 would probably have worked better as 1 larger volume than 2 seperate volumes.
I like the way the village idea is set up in the book better but i always view anime as its own thing and simply an advertisement for the source material (like that 97 berserk anime got me gagging for the manga with its cliffhanger). Whenever im watching a new anime that gets me hooked and its based off an LN im always tempted to go read the books. I used to be the same with manga until i had books wall to wall in my back room equating to an insurmountable backlog. LN's give you more content per volume so take up less space and im trying to be more discerning with what i pick up.
I would have preferred them not to gone the way they did cuz it's going to feel like a plot hole and the queen was probably nerfed the most as a character
Watched the anime before reading the novels, and the changes from LN to anime I thought were fine. The only thing I feel was a bit of a shame was the Raphtalia change not killing the slaver. I get why they did it, but it felt like she took her power back by defeating him. Always felt that scene was so much more powerful in the novel due to her killing him. You also think season 2 would go all the way into vol. 8? I always thought it could work well having a season cliffhanger in the same way the novels did could be cool. If memory serves, doesn't vol. 7 end with Naofumi and gang walking out and seeing their new surroundings? Or am I remembering wrong and that is the beginning of vol. 8? Also hated the main fight of the ending of that second arc (vol. 9) due to it being drawn out so much. Always felt it was the weakest of them all. Always enjoy the later once as they didn't take as long with less "trump cards" constantly prolonging the fight. I had this vision in my head of the tournament part of the vol. 10 novel could work well as a movie. It would probably be hard, but vol. 10-12 are each three "stand alone" storys, yet still equally crucial to the main story. So if another season would ever happen after season 3, it could pick up on the following two volume arcs after vol. 12. But it's probably more wishful thinking from a fan rather then a possibility. Don't think it would get more seasons after that, don't think the novels sell well enough for that. Guess the last thing is that there is so much important setup stuff for the future in vol. 6, and if season 2 is vol. 6, 7 and parts of 8, if the follow the novel, it would be like 3-4 episodes before we ever got into the Spirit Turtle stuff. It could potentially be seen as boring for an anime only audience, but what happens in the first part of that vol. 7 is so important going forward. So curious how they plan to do that, but potentially moving some of the elements from novels 10-12, it could be made more interesting. Heck, I don't know, all we can do is wait and see. All I know is I've been excited for this new season for so long, I'm like a kid on xmas eve at this point. ;-)

Oh, the magic knight. Yeah I'd heard the author said that. I would guess that in that timeline, Aisha probably ended up doing something similar to Nanahoshi and having time stopped for her by Perugius' familiar.
Coming from a ln21 perspective I honestly am ok with the anime change, however I will say it makes some things a bit more complicated. Also yeah the later arcs are insane so I can wait till those get animated. Book 16 if anyone else has read that knows what I’m talking about. ;)
I actually feel that this Tortoise saga with its consequences were the best volumes. I didn't feel any future books as interesting. I mean they may have some chapters which are interesting but not the entire book. I'm on volume 18.
Can I ask a stupid question. I’ve been listening to a version of the story where there are a lot of differences for example the heroes swap parties and Raphtallia doesn’t kill any slave owner? Am I listening to the wrong version?

I don't really like when they change stuff bc it usually means no plans for more of that anime Like yeah, they made Naofumi and the rest more heroic but if by some miracle we get an adaptation of volume 16 how tf would they make the end more heroic? either they change a lot from that or change nothing and the characters act completely different from what the anime has shown
I started reading the light novel after watching the anime, after several books I had to stop because at that point the story got extremely convoluted and unhinged..

That was an April Fool's joke someone made saying that Shield Hero had been canceled to make way for a different series about the Bow Hero because bows are cooler than shields.
I reckon they all decided it was the work of the devil from episode 1 and have never actually watched any other episodes (as with Goblin Slayer), so we'll probably be able to enjoy s2 without them kicking off... But then I underestimate Twitter on almost a daily basis so don't quote me on that.

in my opinion i don't see any reason to watch the season 2 the plot point that got me interested in the first place has already been settled {Malty}. i also heard its just ok after that lets just hope its a good fantasy from there.

The anime. Raphtalia, "We can’t k-k-kiss! I’ll get pregnant!" Filo, "if I win then master will sleep with me" instead of "pat me on the head." [Spoilers] B**** & Trash's trial, Naofumi saves them instead of suggesting the death penalty himself. Disregarding how this effects Naofumi's character, it steemrolls the queen. She looks short-sighted compared to her Ln counterpart who explained that Trash's death could lead to a rebellion led by his many loyal followers. Ln Queen understood politics. Anime Queen was just a spotlight for Naofumi to shine… when he wasn’t supposed to. The Ln characters were multi-layered. Trash is a villain but used to be a great man. The Queen is destructive but also incredibly capable. Naofumi has a pure heart but his paranoia, hatred and cynicism are much more fleshed out in the Ln. He almost didn't buy Raphtalia due to her gender. In the anime he's drawn directly to a female cough. The anime offered watered down versions of every character. [Edit: spacing]
In truth the start of village start after this entire arc, as naofumi realise he needs more people , and trained ones at it , not a makeshift army . I get mad that people still think he is oblivious to how the girls feel, but that is on me as i read all the great web novel and light novel up to 13 , so i know why he is like that, hope we get to see a well done "chat in the cavern while drinking". after episode 1 of s2 , i already saw so many good moments scrapped to make a faster season, which is good as this arc i very long and boring in the LN and manga (to not say offensive in manga) , it is great on wb . DOnt watch the OP and ED people, it is massive spoilers on it, at least 3 big twists on it .
I think the revenge part of rhaptalia the anime actually did dirty on her character, that moral high ground is BS, that bastard did horrible things and it was more realistic better way it was handle in the LN, actually that part of the anime pissed me off, it would have not sullied rhaptalias character in any possible way, in my opinion they just thought it was a good idea to go with an overused hero cliché to make the situation a bit less dark but I think it was a bad directors call, this part always bothered me on the anime.
One of the running theories is that Season 4 could end with an OVA due to pacing and significance of where we expect Season 4 to end. But then again, season 2 and 3 weren't expected to be a single cour initially.
I feel like with how often the author makes changes, the author decided on some of these changes or agreed with them. Also by the way I hope you take a look at isekai Meikyū de harem coming out in the summer or slave harem in another world which is a fairly old web novel. First episode will be controversial I’m sure but it seems like one of those VR isekai with a lewd perverted MC and apparently it inspired mushoku tensei a little
Considering how much I dislike the changes the LN made from the WN; if the anime goes for the mid ground between the 2 I will like it more. Considering my fav arc was axed in the LN to create a more boring and drawn out version as the plot leading back to the same end point. S3 Please give me my Naofumi goes insane arc. Thats a far better story for where certain creatures come from than the LN or Mangas version.
I haven't read the WN yet but I've heard that the LN is kind of 'safer' and then the anime made it even safer still, so I'd probably prefer the WN version too tbh. I'll find out once I've caught up with the LNs...
@@NatalieXHunter I am not quite sure I agree with "safer". Granted I have no understanding of how controversial the WN was or how acidic the fan base was with the WN. What I can confirm is that in an extra chapter there was an Authors note more or less complaining about how people took their intended ending... a "fine would you prefer this" attitude from the Author. I had no understanding of what they were talking about because like it was mid arc and I had no clue what they saw as an ending. I almost guarantee the complaint was something like "didn't I make Naofumi strong enough yet?" because that was the only forced feeling element of the story. I mean like Dimensional travel is a major deal and even in the WN it was basically trivialised once it became known how to do it. So I could agree that Naofumi became unnaturally OP by the end of the WN. Naofumi's gone insane arc was just the point that it actually sinks in how badly he trashes the common denominator...i.e. just how much he holds back normally on purpose or not. I can't quite remember when the arc happens but I think its after trash reveals his reason for hating Shield heroes so much and before he travels to another dimension. He's in his own village as the arc begins. Trust me once you read the WN you will probably be blind sided by its suddenness as I was.
I tried to get into the light novels but my god they were written so poorly I couldn't get through any of them. In the end, the Anime just did better when it came to characters and world building as I could actually pause for a moment and take in the world. Genuinely, the emotion captured in picture compared to the utter lack of any compelling writing, has put the anime more on my radar than ever finishing the light novels. Legit, I tried to read volume 6 and 7 following season 1 to get into the hype for season 2 and just went back to reading Re:Zero where things were written in a way that put emotion and feeling into the world even for characters who had none. Naofumi in the anime shows off his thoughts in a way that makes him relatable, in the light novel series, he's just a blank asshole with zero emotion and zero description of that zero emotion. Still, looking forward to how the anime once again does it better than the novels do :)
WTF, it's ONLY 12 F'n episodes?! Man that really blows, what is with shows that do well(like Demon Slayer, although that is prob to stretch it out) doing 24-26 episodes S1,. Doing a half-assed 12 episodes? I hate it. 90% of the time I've watched a series that's only 12 episode they skip ten tons of shit and a lot of time it messes up the flow of the Anime
I think it'll be fine - things that are based on light novels are kinda paced differently from manga anyway so as long as there's enough episodes to cover a full arc (and I think the next arc can easily be covered in 12), it should be fine. Season 3 has been confirmed too, so it's not really any different from getting a split cour season like Mushoku Tensei and Re:Zero season 2.

I love Arifureta but they skipped so much and if they would have gotta 20 episodes they could have told the story much better imo instead of half the people hating it aside from having the animation issues, but I really enjoy it.
I know there are a lot of "purest" anime watchers, but I really enjoyed the English Dub of this on Funimation. I fear that such dubbing is going to die with that merger and shutdown of that streaming service. :(
I don't think anyone really "needs" to know anything. If a change in an adaptation makes a plot line stop making sense... it doesn't make sense anymore. So if someone says "well anime X is overrated because in this scene N happened and people overlook that" and someone replied "yeah, but the source material did it better" that might be true, but it's not too relevant for the anime only fan, the anime is still subpar. I'm not saying the anime should ignore it's source material fans, far from it, but the anime still should be able to stand on it's own.
Yes, an anime should be able to stand on its own - but a lot of people like to know the extra information that you get from the light novels, especially in shows where there are mysteries about what is going on and they want the same clues the source material had to think about. When it comes to changes, I think it's best to think of them as separate canons, so if something happens differently in the anime, that's the only version of events you should need to know to keep watching the anime, but it's still interesting to think about why certain changes might have been made. I mean, if you don't care and just want to enjoy the story as it is in the anime, that's fine, but that doesn't mean there's no point in talking about the light novels in videos...

I do have my biases in that I enjoy those videos of LNs I actually like more than those that got my hopes up followed by me dropping, but I acknowledge you're just sharing your love for these various series. Nothing in the video bothers me, I just feel that the title of the video is a bit more... "pushy" (maybe that's too strong, I'm not sure what is the right word) than something like "what Season 1 left out."
After talking to someone in an online game and a few misinterpretations of things that were implied (this is why I always say if something wasn't explicit, it might not have be said at all), I think what kind of bugged me was all caps in the title of YOU NEED TO KNOW might have sounded a bit forceful to me.
I wouldn't worry about the titles so much - it's just a normal title format a lot of people use, it's not supposed to be taken literally, like, something bad will happen if you try to watch the anime without knowing what was changed... At the end of the day you don't get many words to tell people what a video is about and why they should watch it, and so going for something catchy over something technically descriptive of the content is just an approach to that.
I really didn’t like this ending. It completely glossed over the whole Hengen Musou stuff and just randomly showed the old lady as part of the town. Season 2 doesn’t appear to be rectifying this either. Not to mention the faux relationship upgrade is what really makes me worry for the future.
Yeah, episode 1 skipped a load of stuff - I mean, I can see why they wanted to get straight on with the spirit tortoise plot but it sometimes seems like the anime just hates showing anything involving the other heroes lol - maybe their voice actors are really expensive!
@@NatalieXHunter Or maybe it is hard to adapt a couple of chapters in something watchable for other than super-fans on the novels. I mean you'd have a couple of episodes with people just argue and talk. That's not very interesting for an anime.
Yeah I agree that speeding up the pace and streamlining the stuff before the tortoise appears was a reasonable choice for the anime, but I still think that just a little bit more time spent on introducing characters like Eclair and what the deal is with Hengen Muso is, as well as showing the fact the other heroes rejected the opportunities they were given to train, would have made everything work a bit better. Maybe that information will be incorporated into later episodes in a decent way though, we can't really tell yet.
Spirit turtle is where i stopped in the manga, right when they got on it. Got bored for some reason :x Maybe the anime will change my mind about the arc.
The anime honestly kinda butchered the Rishia joining mini-arc. It really needed a full episode all on it's own and they would have been better off saving it for the start of season 2 if necessary.
You want disappointment? Do like I did. Start reading the light novel, get to where the anime ended, start the arc that is about to become season two, realize the author can't write for shit, there's 0 tension left now that Naufumi has conquered Melromarc, and every challenge the protagonist now has to overcome starts with a laughably bad and completely unexpected (due to the rules of the world and world building done in season one) contrivance that basically always has him as an underdog because the author can't seem to write any other way.
@@NatalieXHunter I think Japan has a real expectations problem with the West (maybe less so with Japanese people as I'm not familiar with their thoughts on the matter) when it comes to popular franchises. When you announce a show like Shield Boi has been renewed for season two and season three... And no one knows what that means even though season one was 25 or 26 episodes, that's a real problem. As fans waiting years for 26 episodes with another year in between another 26 episodes is quite different from waiting years for 12 episodes with a year break and then another 12 episodes. That's a looooong time to wait and a lot of uncertainty for either 24 episodes or 52+. And that kind of uncertainty makes it harder for fans to support the franchise. And as a TH-camr you know that consistency and fan support are two massive pillars of success in the entertainment industry today. The publishers who pay for anime (not the studios but the financing committees) seem to have the attitude that fans should be grateful for getting anything at all and we should be falling all over ourselves to support whatever mundane efforts they put forth yet at the same time they view Anime as a business and want to generate profits making it. And it is weird how on the one hand they will literally block popular anime from getting succeeding seasons (and there are loads of shows that only got one season that, if the rights holders hired a studio and worked out a budget, entire new seasons of the show would be funded instantly through crowd sourcing), refuse to sell merch for certain shows (how are there no Ascendance Of A Bookworm figurines???), and then get mad and point at the fans when they produce 12 episodes of a rushed show full of bad CG when a full 26 episodes was implied and their book sales tank. I honestly don't understand the mentality since it doesn't make sense from an artistic or capitalism perspective... But one thing I don't think we should do is dissuade fans from expressing their sincere frustration with a system that implies 52+ new episodes as a possibility when trying to build up hype but then delivers less than half of that and has a "you'll take it and be grateful you're getting that much" attitude about it.

Shield Boi season 2 should be interesting if only because the author shot their entire wad on the parts already covered by the anime and the rest of the light novel series is extravagantly bad. All of it is bad but the upcoming Spirit Turtle Arc is particularly bad. But the people making the anime were able to take the best of this bad author's efforts and turn it into an enjoyable season of anime so it should be interesting to see if they can pull a rabbit out of a hat again. Though this time all the Trash and Bitch revenge stuff has already been resolved and the three idiot heroes disappear as soon as the arc begins not to be seen again until... Well let's just say it's going to be a MUCH bigger magic trick to pull off a second successful season even if it is only 12 episodes and season three is going to take a miracle. If they pull it off we can watch and enjoy and if they go down in flames we can enjoy the carnage I guess. Either way should be interesting. The worst thing that could happen here is they make a competent show with a bland and forgettable story. A slow, quiet death for Shield Boi would suck for everyone.

I can maybe tolerate Naofumi's "If you kill him, it makes you as bad as him" thing, maybe. BUT what the anime did to the Queen was just unacceptable. They turned a powerful character who didn't leave things to chance and worked towards the outcome she wanted through charisma and diplomacy into a passive character. Everything the Queen said during the trial part had purpose, it was calculated. She even used real tricks that work, like when she proposed the unreasonable idea that Naofumi marries Bitch and followed up with the much more reasonable proposal of marrying Melty (tho of course that one still has problems with Naofumi's modern sense of morality).
You must not have read the light novel because Naufumi's aversion to marrying Melty has nothing to do with anything but his pathological aversion to all women. Sure there are many other reasons he might object but they are waaaaay down his list and far after "dear GOD please don't let girls ever touch me or require me to ever touch girls!" That's why the kiss at the end of season one had to be such a downer for anyone who then went and read the source material and realized not only did that kiss never happen, it ain't ever gonna happen, and Naufumi is so women-phobic now that he's literally going to get all physical contact in the future from a magic raccoon he merged with some of Raphtalia's hair. Because he's THAT messed up in the head about women.

They sacrificed the queens char to try and make shield look like a typical good guy. Really hurt both of them

Short version, they nerfed the Queen's wrath for the same reason they neerfed Naofumi's, because the Anime was produced for export and their Manga/LN behavior is not morally acceptable for "good" aligned characters in the West.
Long version? TH-cam censored my attempts to explain, go watch some videos on Individualism and Collectivism. It indirectly explains a lot of the censorship you see in exported Anime.
Maybe its because I watched the dub but I interpreted the ending to be that Naofumi was going to stay only for as long as it took for Raphtalia and Filo to find happiness. Being ignorant of the fact he is the source of Raphtalia's happiness.

Yeah it pretty much goes down hill the second they prevented Raph from going for the kill on the slaver, because character flaws be damned and having real stakes in situations you are personally invested in can simply be dropped like it was nothing. Oh sure downplay the trauma of a child watching their friends be tortured to death.
I was gonna say, I don't think Raphtalia killing that scumbag would've lost her, her Best Girl of the Year award. Sure she's sweet, kind, but she's also a warrior and someone who's suffered a lot. I really can't see her taking revenge as a negative.

even before, they made rifana death more subtle and raphtalia wasnt even there at her end , it was way more dark in the ln.
The biggest change was done to the queen - she went from badass authority with an iron fist who gets shit done and fixes her family's mistake in the most brutal possible way, to a coward who is willing to kill herself and abandon her kingdom and her 11 years old daughter because she was too weak to propose another solution rather than execution! And in doing so, the anime made Naofumi a far whiter character rather than the morally deep grey, damaged person he is in the original!
For those who don't know, in the original, Naofumi yells to the top of his lungs that he wants Myne and the King dead, that only their deaths will satisfy him. The Queen intervenes saying he has the absolute right to choose their fates, since he was the biggest victim of their crimes, but then suggests far worse punishments than death, that even Naofumi himself is taken aback and thinks she's crazy. That's when they decide eternal public humiliation is a far more fitting punishment, given their egos.
I am honestly not happy with the changes they made. I want to see a Blue Exorcist treatment, where the sequel ignores the anime changes and pretends everything went according to the source material, and maybe even Clear Arc introduction, where the "episode 0" of season 2 retells events of the previous season but focuses on making audiences understand the previous ending has been retconned (though it retcons the retcon later on, we can keep that out).
They could use those crystal orb recording devices to retcon it in a way, the version we saw was the edited version to make Naofumi look better by the Queen. And her shadows could be the ones who recorded it.

@@maxjojo917 Oh yeah, the anime made Naofumi far more heroic than he actually is. The truth is that Naofumi is broken and vengeful! Usually it's Raphtalia who keeps him in check.
But that's not the only "Mistake" the anime made, the entire last arc (L'arc's arc, no pun intended) should have been put as the opening arc for the second season, because THAT'S WHEN THE GAME CHANGES! Season 1 should have been Naofumi's struggle with the false rape accusations, ending with his name being cleared and Bitch and Trash's judgement being passed down. It's starting from L'arc's appearance that the narrative shifts to focus on the nature of the Waves and the multiple worlds at play, so that shouldn' have been the closing arc for season 1, but rather the opening for season 2!

The keep it as spoiler free as possible Risha ended up in a similar situation as Naofumi before she got kicked out and that tore open so fresh wounds on our shield bro who didn't take to kindly to it. Not only was his response incredible; it gave a clear definition to the gap in power between him and the other Heroes.
they already butchered that scene, I doubt they will go back and fix it. I was legit annoyed when I saw what they did because I was looking forward to it being shown

At the current latest light novel volume 22 Naofumi is still believes he will go back to Japan after his job is done, he ackowlages the world has people he cares about in he actively hates the world itself and still wants out, you can get a sort of vibe from this whenever Naofumi is in the Hunting Hero's world as he is alot more playful and humourful while over there.
I'm only on volume 14 (trying to catch up as fast as I can) but what I wonder about is if Naofumi is the only one of the four heroes that *can* go home. Because the spear, bow and sword heroes all died in Japan and seemed to have been resurrected in this world, whereas there was no indication Naofumi (or Kizuna) died, they just seemed to be summoned. So I wonder if the other heroes would even be able to go back if they wanted to.

I've been thinking of one change for S2 which imho would improve the story. Basically just change the climax of vol 6. My problem with it in the books is that it feels redundant, it's almost comparable to movies or tv shows where the main couple gets together at the end only for them to split up in the sequel and get together again. Vol 6&7 would probably have worked better as 1 larger volume than 2 seperate volumes.
I like the way the village idea is set up in the book better but i always view anime as its own thing and simply an advertisement for the source material (like that 97 berserk anime got me gagging for the manga with its cliffhanger). Whenever im watching a new anime that gets me hooked and its based off an LN im always tempted to go read the books. I used to be the same with manga until i had books wall to wall in my back room equating to an insurmountable backlog. LN's give you more content per volume so take up less space and im trying to be more discerning with what i pick up.
Don't sound like the changes will alter the story much. I'm fine with that.

Watched the anime before reading the novels, and the changes from LN to anime I thought were fine. The only thing I feel was a bit of a shame was the Raphtalia change not killing the slaver. I get why they did it, but it felt like she took her power back by defeating him. Always felt that scene was so much more powerful in the novel due to her killing him.
You also think season 2 would go all the way into vol. 8? I always thought it could work well having a season cliffhanger in the same way the novels did could be cool. If memory serves, doesn't vol. 7 end with Naofumi and gang walking out and seeing their new surroundings? Or am I remembering wrong and that is the beginning of vol. 8? Also hated the main fight of the ending of that second arc (vol. 9) due to it being drawn out so much. Always felt it was the weakest of them all. Always enjoy the later once as they didn't take as long with less "trump cards" constantly prolonging the fight. I had this vision in my head of the tournament part of the vol. 10 novel could work well as a movie. It would probably be hard, but vol. 10-12 are each three "stand alone" storys, yet still equally crucial to the main story. So if another season would ever happen after season 3, it could pick up on the following two volume arcs after vol. 12. But it's probably more wishful thinking from a fan rather then a possibility. Don't think it would get more seasons after that, don't think the novels sell well enough for that.
Guess the last thing is that there is so much important setup stuff for the future in vol. 6, and if season 2 is vol. 6, 7 and parts of 8, if the follow the novel, it would be like 3-4 episodes before we ever got into the Spirit Turtle stuff. It could potentially be seen as boring for an anime only audience, but what happens in the first part of that vol. 7 is so important going forward. So curious how they plan to do that, but potentially moving some of the elements from novels 10-12, it could be made more interesting. Heck, I don't know, all we can do is wait and see. All I know is I've been excited for this new season for so long, I'm like a kid on xmas eve at this point. ;-)

Oh, the magic knight. Yeah I'd heard the author said that. I would guess that in that timeline, Aisha probably ended up doing something similar to Nanahoshi and having time stopped for her by Perugius' familiar.

Coming from a ln21 perspective I honestly am ok with the anime change, however I will say it makes some things a bit more complicated. Also yeah the later arcs are insane so I can wait till those get animated. Book 16 if anyone else has read that knows what I’m talking about. ;)

I actually feel that this Tortoise saga with its consequences were the best volumes. I didn't feel any future books as interesting. I mean they may have some chapters which are interesting but not the entire book. I'm on volume 18.
The biggest change for me was the anime making the queen look like a damsel in distress instead of the razor sharp politician that she is in the LN

Like yeah, they made Naofumi and the rest more heroic but if by some miracle we get an adaptation of volume 16 how tf would they make the end more heroic? either they change a lot from that or change nothing and the characters act completely different from what the anime has shown
I started reading the light novel after watching the anime, after several books I had to stop because at that point the story got extremely convoluted and unhinged..

That was an April Fool's joke someone made saying that Shield Hero had been canceled to make way for a different series about the Bow Hero because bows are cooler than shields.

I reckon they all decided it was the work of the devil from episode 1 and have never actually watched any other episodes (as with Goblin Slayer), so we'll probably be able to enjoy s2 without them kicking off... But then I underestimate Twitter on almost a daily basis so don't quote me on that.

Naofumi saves them instead of suggesting the death penalty himself.
Disregarding how this effects Naofumi's character, it steemrolls the queen.
She looks short-sighted compared to her Ln counterpart who explained that Trash's death could lead to a rebellion led by his many loyal followers. Ln Queen understood politics. Anime Queen was just a spotlight for Naofumi to shine… when he wasn’t supposed to.
The Ln characters were multi-layered.
Trash is a villain but used to be a great man.
The Queen is destructive but also incredibly capable.
Naofumi has a pure heart but his paranoia, hatred and cynicism are much more fleshed out in the Ln.
He almost didn't buy Raphtalia due to her gender. In the anime he's drawn directly to a female cough.
The anime offered watered down versions of every character.

In truth the start of village start after this entire arc, as naofumi realise he needs more people , and trained ones at it , not a makeshift army .
I get mad that people still think he is oblivious to how the girls feel, but that is on me as i read all the great web novel and light novel up to 13 , so i know why he is like that, hope we get to see a well done "chat in the cavern while drinking".
after episode 1 of s2 , i already saw so many good moments scrapped to make a faster season, which is good as this arc i very long and boring in the LN and manga (to not say offensive in manga) , it is great on wb .

I think the revenge part of rhaptalia the anime actually did dirty on her character, that moral high ground is BS, that bastard did horrible things and it was more realistic better way it was handle in the LN, actually that part of the anime pissed me off, it would have not sullied rhaptalias character in any possible way, in my opinion they just thought it was a good idea to go with an overused hero cliché to make the situation a bit less dark but I think it was a bad directors call, this part always bothered me on the anime.

The second season will be enjoyable, also hopefully season 4 is 2 cours. and season 5 can be 1 cour, OR maybe 3 cours can happen.
One of the running theories is that Season 4 could end with an OVA due to pacing and significance of where we expect Season 4 to end. But then again, season 2 and 3 weren't expected to be a single cour initially.

I feel like with how often the author makes changes, the author decided on some of these changes or agreed with them. Also by the way I hope you take a look at isekai Meikyū de harem coming out in the summer or slave harem in another world which is a fairly old web novel. First episode will be controversial I’m sure but it seems like one of those VR isekai with a lewd perverted MC and apparently it inspired mushoku tensei a little
Considering how much I dislike the changes the LN made from the WN; if the anime goes for the mid ground between the 2 I will like it more.
Considering my fav arc was axed in the LN to create a more boring and drawn out version as the plot leading back to the same end point.
S3 Please give me my Naofumi goes insane arc. Thats a far better story for where certain creatures come from than the LN or Mangas version.
I haven't read the WN yet but I've heard that the LN is kind of 'safer' and then the anime made it even safer still, so I'd probably prefer the WN version too tbh. I'll find out once I've caught up with the LNs...

Granted I have no understanding of how controversial the WN was or how acidic the fan base was with the WN.
What I can confirm is that in an extra chapter there was an Authors note more or less complaining about how people took their intended ending... a "fine would you prefer this" attitude from the Author.
I had no understanding of what they were talking about because like it was mid arc and I had no clue what they saw as an ending.
I almost guarantee the complaint was something like "didn't I make Naofumi strong enough yet?" because that was the only forced feeling element of the story.
I mean like Dimensional travel is a major deal and even in the WN it was basically trivialised once it became known how to do it. So I could agree that Naofumi became unnaturally OP by the end of the WN.
Naofumi's gone insane arc was just the point that it actually sinks in how badly he trashes the common denominator...i.e. just how much he holds back normally on purpose or not.
I can't quite remember when the arc happens but I think its after trash reveals his reason for hating Shield heroes so much and before he travels to another dimension. He's in his own village as the arc begins. Trust me once you read the WN you will probably be blind sided by its suddenness as I was.
I tried to get into the light novels but my god they were written so poorly I couldn't get through any of them. In the end, the Anime just did better when it came to characters and world building as I could actually pause for a moment and take in the world. Genuinely, the emotion captured in picture compared to the utter lack of any compelling writing, has put the anime more on my radar than ever finishing the light novels.
Legit, I tried to read volume 6 and 7 following season 1 to get into the hype for season 2 and just went back to reading Re:Zero where things were written in a way that put emotion and feeling into the world even for characters who had none. Naofumi in the anime shows off his thoughts in a way that makes him relatable, in the light novel series, he's just a blank asshole with zero emotion and zero description of that zero emotion.
Still, looking forward to how the anime once again does it better than the novels do :)
I don't think the writing style is very good, but it does improve through the series as the writer seems to get more experienced.

WTF, it's ONLY 12 F'n episodes?! Man that really blows, what is with shows that do well(like Demon Slayer, although that is prob to stretch it out) doing 24-26 episodes S1,. Doing a half-assed 12 episodes? I hate it. 90% of the time I've watched a series that's only 12 episode they skip ten tons of shit and a lot of time it messes up the flow of the Anime
I think it'll be fine - things that are based on light novels are kinda paced differently from manga anyway so as long as there's enough episodes to cover a full arc (and I think the next arc can easily be covered in 12), it should be fine. Season 3 has been confirmed too, so it's not really any different from getting a split cour season like Mushoku Tensei and Re:Zero season 2.

I love Arifureta but they skipped so much and if they would have gotta 20 episodes they could have told the story much better imo instead of half the people hating it aside from having the animation issues, but I really enjoy it.

I don't think anyone really "needs" to know anything. If a change in an adaptation makes a plot line stop making sense... it doesn't make sense anymore. So if someone says "well anime X is overrated because in this scene N happened and people overlook that" and someone replied "yeah, but the source material did it better" that might be true, but it's not too relevant for the anime only fan, the anime is still subpar. I'm not saying the anime should ignore it's source material fans, far from it, but the anime still should be able to stand on it's own.
Yes, an anime should be able to stand on its own - but a lot of people like to know the extra information that you get from the light novels, especially in shows where there are mysteries about what is going on and they want the same clues the source material had to think about. When it comes to changes, I think it's best to think of them as separate canons, so if something happens differently in the anime, that's the only version of events you should need to know to keep watching the anime, but it's still interesting to think about why certain changes might have been made. I mean, if you don't care and just want to enjoy the story as it is in the anime, that's fine, but that doesn't mean there's no point in talking about the light novels in videos...

Nothing in the video bothers me, I just feel that the title of the video is a bit more... "pushy" (maybe that's too strong, I'm not sure what is the right word) than something like "what Season 1 left out."
After talking to someone in an online game and a few misinterpretations of things that were implied (this is why I always say if something wasn't explicit, it might not have be said at all), I think what kind of bugged me was all caps in the title of YOU NEED TO KNOW might have sounded a bit forceful to me.
I wouldn't worry about the titles so much - it's just a normal title format a lot of people use, it's not supposed to be taken literally, like, something bad will happen if you try to watch the anime without knowing what was changed... At the end of the day you don't get many words to tell people what a video is about and why they should watch it, and so going for something catchy over something technically descriptive of the content is just an approach to that.
I really didn’t like this ending. It completely glossed over the whole Hengen Musou stuff and just randomly showed the old lady as part of the town. Season 2 doesn’t appear to be rectifying this either. Not to mention the faux relationship upgrade is what really makes me worry for the future.
Yeah, episode 1 skipped a load of stuff - I mean, I can see why they wanted to get straight on with the spirit tortoise plot but it sometimes seems like the anime just hates showing anything involving the other heroes lol - maybe their voice actors are really expensive!
@@NatalieXHunter Or maybe it is hard to adapt a couple of chapters in something watchable for other than super-fans on the novels. I mean you'd have a couple of episodes with people just argue and talk. That's not very interesting for an anime.
Yeah I agree that speeding up the pace and streamlining the stuff before the tortoise appears was a reasonable choice for the anime, but I still think that just a little bit more time spent on introducing characters like Eclair and what the deal is with Hengen Muso is, as well as showing the fact the other heroes rejected the opportunities they were given to train, would have made everything work a bit better. Maybe that information will be incorporated into later episodes in a decent way though, we can't really tell yet.
This is one of the few shows where I think the Anime is better than the LN/Manga.

Spirit turtle is where i stopped in the manga, right when they got on it. Got bored for some reason :x Maybe the anime will change my mind about the arc.
The anime honestly kinda butchered the Rishia joining mini-arc. It really needed a full episode all on it's own and they would have been better off saving it for the start of season 2 if necessary.

You want disappointment? Do like I did. Start reading the light novel, get to where the anime ended, start the arc that is about to become season two, realize the author can't write for shit, there's 0 tension left now that Naufumi has conquered Melromarc, and every challenge the protagonist now has to overcome starts with a laughably bad and completely unexpected (due to the rules of the world and world building done in season one) contrivance that basically always has him as an underdog because the author can't seem to write any other way.
Season 3 has also been confirmed so honestly it's not that different to if it was a split cour season like MT and Re:Zero season 2.
@@NatalieXHunter I think Japan has a real expectations problem with the West (maybe less so with Japanese people as I'm not familiar with their thoughts on the matter) when it comes to popular franchises. When you announce a show like Shield Boi has been renewed for season two and season three... And no one knows what that means even though season one was 25 or 26 episodes, that's a real problem. As fans waiting years for 26 episodes with another year in between another 26 episodes is quite different from waiting years for 12 episodes with a year break and then another 12 episodes. That's a looooong time to wait and a lot of uncertainty for either 24 episodes or 52+. And that kind of uncertainty makes it harder for fans to support the franchise. And as a TH-camr you know that consistency and fan support are two massive pillars of success in the entertainment industry today. The publishers who pay for anime (not the studios but the financing committees) seem to have the attitude that fans should be grateful for getting anything at all and we should be falling all over ourselves to support whatever mundane efforts they put forth yet at the same time they view Anime as a business and want to generate profits making it. And it is weird how on the one hand they will literally block popular anime from getting succeeding seasons (and there are loads of shows that only got one season that, if the rights holders hired a studio and worked out a budget, entire new seasons of the show would be funded instantly through crowd sourcing), refuse to sell merch for certain shows (how are there no Ascendance Of A Bookworm figurines???), and then get mad and point at the fans when they produce 12 episodes of a rushed show full of bad CG when a full 26 episodes was implied and their book sales tank. I honestly don't understand the mentality since it doesn't make sense from an artistic or capitalism perspective... But one thing I don't think we should do is dissuade fans from expressing their sincere frustration with a system that implies 52+ new episodes as a possibility when trying to build up hype but then delivers less than half of that and has a "you'll take it and be grateful you're getting that much" attitude about it.

Shield Boi season 2 should be interesting if only because the author shot their entire wad on the parts already covered by the anime and the rest of the light novel series is extravagantly bad. All of it is bad but the upcoming Spirit Turtle Arc is particularly bad. But the people making the anime were able to take the best of this bad author's efforts and turn it into an enjoyable season of anime so it should be interesting to see if they can pull a rabbit out of a hat again. Though this time all the Trash and Bitch revenge stuff has already been resolved and the three idiot heroes disappear as soon as the arc begins not to be seen again until... Well let's just say it's going to be a MUCH bigger magic trick to pull off a second successful season even if it is only 12 episodes and season three is going to take a miracle. If they pull it off we can watch and enjoy and if they go down in flames we can enjoy the carnage I guess. Either way should be interesting. The worst thing that could happen here is they make a competent show with a bland and forgettable story. A slow, quiet death for Shield Boi would suck for everyone.
