      Jack of all Trades are good at being a mid level general supervisor, assessing risk, assessing skill levels, and knowing when to bring in an expert. A general super know all the important task or risk for a particular scenario so they can identify and manage most projects/field commands. Their general skill exposure means they know when a skill is at an expert level - so they can identify experts that could help. Jack of all Trades tend to be critical to support HQTR/CO/CEO when team tasks or field commands have incomplete or unknown variables that must be solved /resolved along the way. If Rishia is a polygot then she will likely be a Mystery Solving Catalyst Deus Ex Machina - deciphering/ reading ancient riddles/texts/legends that will help the Shield Hero the general risk/goals that he must accomplish. WRT to the Art of War - What the Shield Hero team needs is a spy/intelligence agent... the Queen's intelligence network allegiance is questionable imho and the Shield Hero Team needs its own intelligence agent.

    Thank you for explaining Rishia's character in greater detail. However, as an anime only I still find her annoying because she's still trying to get back into the Bow hero's party when they didn't want her and her toxic obsession with Itsuki himself might lead her to do something stupid that will put her in danger and Naofumi's party will have to save her again. I would like to see a video about the Bow and Sword Hero.

      In the light novel that doesn't happen. Once Naofumi has his fight with the Bow Hero and shows who is useless (great scene cut from the anime of course, it's a trashy adaptation after all), he keeps Rishia away from Itsuki for obvious reasons, so there's no point in which she tries reject Naofumi goodwill and return to the party the doesn't want her.

      I do hope the show will portray her growth properly. As far as episode 1 of S2 is concerned, Rishia already earned my disdain thanks to her obsession with chuuni itsuki. The whole "stats I can't see" makes a ton of sense given how the "menu" works. A great deal of what's in the menu is only visible if you expect it to be there. So it would make sense that you won't be able to see stats that you don't expect to exist.

  • @nick1wasd
    @nick1wasd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Cutting out Motoyasu going to Naofumi for help is actually a huge disservice to Motoyasu. That moment shows that, since he was shown Bitch being a huge liar, his faith in Naofumi isn't as bad as it once was, and that he actually respects Naofumi's ability to try and talk things out first, and acting second. It also sets up his later character arc with his... esoteric interests... that he's actually pretty good at reading the room when he's pressed to do so, and demonstrates that he can ask for help in non-game related situations. Now he's just still a jock who thinks with his lower head, and not a guy who actually cares about other people but has a tendency to be an idiot about it.

    I’m so glad this video is made! As an anime only watcher, I noticed that the pacing in the first episode is incredible rush and not enough time wasn’t given to Rishia. I had completely forgotten about her in the last episode of Season 1 and her introduction in season 2 made me completely lost. I feel like more time could have been given to her training instead of going directly towards the tortoise.

    Rishia has been pushed towards a fighting style she is not naturally a custom too hence her stats being weird, this is because of the Bow Hero's ego not wanting to compete in long range DPS with a descent mage , one of the many problems with the Bow Hero is his glory seeking that made him kick Rishia from the party for getting praise while he was seen as ineffective and though that asshole plan of blaming her for braking a piece of equipment he just upgraded from no less

    Thanks for the video, and the heads up on the changes between the source material and the anime. Rishia has been a black box in terms of what she means in the story, so I appreciated that you did reveal that she'll be around for a while, that she's not a perfect fit for either the team she left or the team she's on, but she is here to stay and does fill a role. After the way this series starts, it's hard to trust ANY new character coming in without some kind of assurance they won't be an a-hole.

    I do wish they'd have included Keel in the slave contracting. As an anime-only fan, the scene as is just felt like a weird shoehorn of "omg Naofumi getting another slave girl waifu" which is like..... :\
    But if they'd have included Keel I think it would have negated that weirdness while also creating the opportunity to explain that they basically get buffs from him through their contracts (which I don't think has been explicitly stated up to this point?).

    • @ultrahotwings9738
      @ultrahotwings9738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It kinda was briefly touched upon that Naofumi gives buffs with his contracts early in S1 (when he talks about how Filo was growing fast because of a skill he had), but it was almost a throwaway, forgettable line. Really felt like they should've revisited that and brought it back up when Rishia got her crest, even if it was going to be yet another throwaway line, just so we got that refresher. Doesn't have to be a whole worldbuilding explanation, but a simple "well, X shield will help her growth thanks to the crest" would've really helped remind us that he has that ability.

    I remember year's ago i dropped the novel because of this arc.
    I got tired how the writer make all those who aren't with the protagonist be piece's of trash.
    Seriously, the way she was treated was just an excuse to ad her to Naofumi girl's collection.
    Great analyze of her character. She is definitely one of the writhed of the novel. Remind me a lot of classical Victorian novel's.

    • @Viborgdk
      @Viborgdk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I would agree with you that I was never a fan of how the other heroes were played out in the novels, but it pays off later on. Don't know how far you got before dropping the series, but this is actually what sets of their change. After what happens to them, they go from bad to worse in terms of personality, and I'm not talking about becoming more stupid. It was called the curse series for a reason. All three of them have a chance of redemption, and giving how moronic they are portrayed, makes this redemption so satisfying. Seeing them having to go through their personal hell and come out on top, truly becoming worthy allies is great.
      The autor loves in introduce characters much much earlier then what they are truly planned for, making us as a reader get to know them, understand them and having the choices they make make sense. Just as an example, a character is introduced in vol. 11, she plays an important role in that arc. She's in the village and pops up regularly over the course of the novels. Then you get to vol. 20, this is where she really shines. It's clear she was created for this specific arc, and each and every choice she makes makes sense, because you've gotten to know her, understand her motives and "what makes her tick". There are many more examples of this in the series of characters being introduced earlier then they need to, but due to them being there early, we have a chance to get to know them, making things they do and choices they make have so much more meaning.
      I get this isn't a writing style for everyone enjoys, all I'm saying is the author loves doing this. You are definitely rewarded for sticking with the series, but it also means characters sometimes have to be annoying maybe feel a bit, dare I say, unneeded at first. Rishia is another example of this btw, she joins the party in vol. 6, but it takes many volumes before she truly comes into her own, but when she does, she's bad ass. Sorry for the longwinded answer, just wanted to share this thought with you.

      @@alejandrosegato671 That's fair enough. If a series really hooks you, you'll be more inclined to stick with it even if an arc isn't the best. For me, I actually didn't think the arc that is in season 2 was very good, but I fell in love with the series, that's why I stuck with it.
      And given how much time you need to commit in order to follow and read a ln/manga, it needs to be something you enjoy. So it's totally fine you didn't want to continue the series, if a series didn't hook me, I wouldn't read it either. Well, the game Itsuki played was a single player RPG (so probably something like Skyrim), and Ren was a solo player type, so it kind of makes sense that they don't. And Motoyasu is kinda dumb. Only one thing wrong here, she didn't actually willingly leave her family to join Itsuki, *he subconsciously used his ability to compell her to join him.* This is one of the reasons that she was in such an emotional state, his power had downsides that later backfired on him when his curse series was beaten.

    The absolute best part of the first episode is the stopping of the "Fweh" and now that she has a slave mark it would be even funnier if from time to time she says it and gets shocked. IMO it was her most annoying thing about her and glad it was acknowledged by the characters.
    Now that being said this is the first time I have heard of any information on what the other heroes were prior to being isekai'ed. I am actually quite interested and seeing how it plays into the current motivations.
    My most hated hero is the bow hero. He thinks he's beyond bad ass and it would have been alright if he was but he isn't and refused to see the truth. Also the fact that his brand of justice doesn't actually help anyone. I don't know if he ever "checked" on the rebellion he helped with but if he did none it seems to affect his outlook whatsoever.
    The spear hero Motoyasu is pretty abhorrent also BUT at least when confronted with the truth he was willing to let Myne die for what she did. I cannot say the same for Itsuki. Now hearing that Motoyasu asked Naofumi to help Rishia because had issues with troubled girls in his past life helps me see him in a better light than before. I think it might be crappy he didn't pick up the mantle but asking Naofumi to do it means that Motoyasu now sees Naofumi as something positive even if he may not get along with him.

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's just that those videos were really confusing the algorithm (they're pretty niche so not a lot of people watch them - and there's really no point in TH-cam recommending a part 12 of a series to new people, but they have high retention because people tend to watch the whole chapter, so it kinda confuses the system) which lead to any other videos I put out only being shown around to my regular viewers. I wanted to put out a load of less niche stuff for a while to reset things before finishing the series to negate that effect.

  • @revanninja

    I honestly think the issue with the second season is they are running into the issue where the turtle is an important arc for what it sets up but a drawn out arc in what it does. Since a large chunk of the stuff it sets up isnt important till after the hunting hero arc, I think they arent skipping per say but rather planning to reintroduce when it becomes important so they dont give a lot of time and detail to people who may not be important this season since it seems the Hunting Hero is happening and will probably be the end of the second season.
    So I think this is a case where it works for a Web Novel Light Novel format but for an anime it causes issues and so they are doing their best to adapt it to anime while being true to the source material. Because notice Eclair and granny are both there when it might have been easier to cut them out for now. So I think its a compromise with the intent to fill in at a later date when it becomes important.

    I haven't read anything just watched season 1 anime. I was hoping Rishia was going to be a little further along mentally with the new team. She is in a group that wants her and sees value in her. That's not going to erase everything she went through but it appeared she had been training with the Shield Hero team for quite a while. On top of that, she was very successful in the last battle of season 1.
    I was excited to see what she could do...at least a glimpse. But, it looks as though I will have to wait. Naofumi or Raphtalia already hinted that once she got that slave crest she'll already be stronger than anyone in the old party.
    Maybe she has a skill similar to King in OPM. She could be in the right place at the right time sort of stuff. But I just like to guess.

    I've been reading the manga actually, and I feel like her introduction in the anime, based on what I've been reading, had a lot of missed potential with the skipped confrontation with Naofumi and Itsuki. I personally would've preferred them to end season 1 either right before or right after her introduction and that confrontation, and then start off with half an episode dedicated to that training arc to introduce Eclair and the Old Woman. That would've helped provide a good foundation as to how significant Eclair is to Naofumi's territory, and also give the reason as to why the heroes are missing.
    After that, I wouldn't have minded as much to rushing through the Spirit Tortoise arc in order to actually get to confronting the main bad guy of this arc. Nevertheless, it is what it is, and I don't see them going back to explain anything else later in the season. Let's just hope they don't skip over entire arcs and rewriting big portions of the story like how they did with The Promised Neverland season 2 :)

    The fact that there are some changes between the novels and the anime doesn't really bother me, as long as major plotpoints or narrative doesn't change. I get that so much of vol. 6 has been skipped already as, while interesting to read in the novel, because you're invested in the world and such, doesn't make the same sense in anime form. I did see some comments on MAL that people found the first episode boring. I don't put to much stock in something like that though, people tend to forget that Shield Hero is a very character driven story. Personally, how it's been presented till now has been fine.
    I also always enjoyed, as you mentioned the time when has to work with Naofumi without the support of the rest of the team, means she's given a chance to grow as a character. Also always loved her weapon of choice, can't remember when she starts using it. But the way it's explained when she swings her weapon around, it always felt so elegant yet deadly.

    My problem is less with time spent on Rishia, but rather the complete ignoring of what Hengen Musou is. Because it’s an ability that seems to go against how this world normally works. It’s not a stat or skill that has a number associated with it. It’s fueled by a resource that isn’t listed on your character sheet. It’s not affected by the exp gained from fighting monsters. There’s no menu or vocal command to use it. Only understanding and practice will let you use it, and it lets you do bonkers things like... Defend against piercing attacks.
    I’m not exactly sure what the purpose is of ignoring this.

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Atla isn't there yet - she doesn't show up for quite a while. But yeah, at the end of season 1 they had Naofumi get the village (which happens later in the novels, in the LNs they do all this training stuff at the castle), and showed that Keel and the old lady were there, but Eclair was never introduced at all, she was just briefly shown as being there in season 2 episode 1. They will have to introduce Eclair at some point but since they skipped the stuff with the other heroes and she is mostly relevant to Ren I guess they left her out of things for now. They skipped explaining about the old lady and Hengen Muso, so I guess we just know she's some kind of martial arts master, and they didn't show Keel becoming Naofumi's slave and trying to level up to be part of the party (Keel gets injured early in the spirit tortoise arc in the LNs and sits the rest of it out, so I guess to streamline it they'll just have keel join the party later... Though they might skip a lot of stuff with Keel to avoid controversy - if you've read the LNs you'll know why I think that might be the case.

    I dont mind the cowardly, shy character trope. Just like Zenitsu they all have their moment to shine. Here's the thing, if every party member was fearsome, brave, bold, and gung ho, ready to die at a moment's notice, then you will have a Suicide Squad. This group needs a cowardly person to be the voice of reason, and point out the obvious "Ah, its a trap!!!!" You need Admiral Akbar!!!! So yeah, in Season 1 and 2 you had Naofumi and Raphtalia, then shortly Filo. You had the leader, who is strong and silent, who makes all the rational decisions. Then you have your swordsman, who is valiant and brave. Then you have your Loli, who is cute and adorable. But out of these 3, you had to rely on Naofumi to be the brains of this operation, that is no easy task. Naofumi is a strategist but even he doesn't have time to speed read and find out about the folklore about certain monsters. With Rishia, she seems to be an appendix of information, and she doesnt mind doing the clerical work and investigating. You mentioned that she is a jack of all trades, thats even better. That means she can learn different skills and provide backup when the main person isnt available. She position in the group is very valuable because she provides backup. The group knows that she can always come up with a backup plan and get them out of jams if their primary plan didnt work. Plus having another party member who can strategize other than Naofumi makes his job alot easier.

    As a light novel reader I was rather disappointed with Rishia's introduction in the first season. I had been looking forward to the confrontation between Naofumi and Itsuki after Naofumi finds out what he did, with Itsuki unleashing a furry of arrows and Naofumi not even bothering to block. Originally I had assumed season 2 would spend an episode dealing with that, as well as explaining what the seven star heroes were, but I was disappointed Rishia's introductory arc was brushed over and turned into about a minute of content as they rushed to get off the island and return to the mainland before the end of the season. I was also disappointed we didn't get to see the squirrel suit.
    I had heard that the author asked the anime studio not to portray the heroes as evil and they seem to of toned down the darker aspects of each of them, including Naofumi. This has caused Rishia's characterization to suffer, as they largely hid Itsuki's toxic behavior and by extension his abuse of her. I fear this will hinder her character development, as anime onlys will not fully understand where she started.

      There may be no need for them to rush but that doesn't mean they just have unlimited time to animate every scene from the source material. • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my honest opinion, the first few volumes of the LN are not very well written. The author seems to get better with experience. The story is decent and the characters have some interesting ideas behind them, but the first few volumes are a bit amateur writing wise. For me that was just something I had to grind through, because I wanted to know all the differences in detail if I was going to be covering the series, but if I wasn't making content about it I'd probably have skipped the first five volumes (maybe just watched some cut content videos) and started after the end of season 1. Naofumi's tone isn't really that bad in terms of him being miserable and paranoid, though, in its extremes that only lasts for the first volume (until the duel with Motoyasu when he sees Raphtalia has grown up), and that isn't long enough for it to make him miserable to read about, it's still quite interesting as part of his character.

I'm looking forward to seeing Kizuna Kazayama in some future season. I also wish we got more of the Queen, who is top tier waifu material. I'm also looking forward to seeing Glass again.

      I think Kizuna will be in this season because she's shown in the ED. She shows up at the start of volume 8 and the anime is on volume 6 at the moment, so I think they'll probably cover the spirit tortoise arc and then the start of the next arc in this 12 episode season (so maybe 2 and a half volumes, which would match the 5 volumes they covered in season 1 with 25 episodes).
