Probably my favourite part.
At first it sounds like a young maiden praying and hoping that her lover will return to her having satisfied his thirst for adventure and danger, so that they can settle down and be together, live happily. It’s innocent and sweet.
… but then you realise that this is sung by a siren who’s trying to lure a sailor to his death, and suddenly him “not roaming anymore” takes on a much darker and more eerie meaning…

This feels like it would fit in a horror movie about an abusive sailor's wife drowning in the sea and before dying, her rage and vengance has formed an oath that promise torment and agony, her oath became reality and she became a beautiful siren with a voice as hypnotising as the Seraph's lullaby. Now, she sang this song everytime a new boat come across, and with each time the song stop, another body is placed in the bottom of the blue abyss.

What if the sailor wasn't abusive, but when he left, he wasn't able to protect her from a local noble who took it upon himself to rape her, and then she lept from the cliffs and her spirit ended up blaming her beloved sailor for her untimely death, so he had to put her soul to rest, maybe even getting claimed by the sea in the process and ending up spending eternity with her

Theres a girl named JADA who sang this song and many Disney classics, and then there's Laura Paley (Laura probably isn't spelled correctly but you'll still find her lol) she sings in places like stairwells a lot of the time and even does dios with other "sirens". The essence of a siren was definitely heavily imbued in this song. The intention of the voice itself is dark water by nature. Carried me to some dark and scary watery place. So beautiful yet so dark and scary...

Rebecca Smith haha I can relate. I have a decent range, but I can only go so far into those lower notes before there’s some... unfortunate frog sounds are produced.
I know it's really not fun, but try to widen your range by actually taking on certain mezzo songs that go a bit deeper :) It's not about perfecting what doesn't come natural to you, but to get at least some strength for briefer notes that are much lower than your common register. I don't sing professionally but I am taking classes ever since I was a child as my family deemed singing a valuable skill.

Ariel was a Mermaid NOT a Siren. Mermaids (half-human half-fish)were thought to be naive and would easily fall in love with humans and would even save them from shipwrecks. Sirens on the other hand were originally bird/human hybrids that would wait near oceans to lure humans into shipwrecks and/or drown them (by singing) . They were also considered very beautiful and resembled angles so it's believed that a jealous god removed all their feathers causing them to drown; however, another god, who pitted the sirens, gave them gills and a tail. They were considered hideous after all their feathers were gone so they would hypnotize sailers to appear like beautiful woman/mermaids in order to eat. This would cause many sailers to also fear mermaids and even kill them despite their innocence. Hence the constant confusion between mermaids and sirens.
Note: Im not sure if I got all the details correct since I wrote this by memory. I also wanted to say that this explanation stems from Greek mythology.
There is not denying that the voice of Ashley is exceptional but I have yet to see a comment referencing the beautiful words of My Jolly Sailor Bold. Whoever wrote this was exceptional, combine the brilliance of Ashley with something so beautifully worded and the result is astonishing.

I've listened to this song probably 50+ times by now and just now realized the line "I disdain all glittering gold" could be referring to his wedding ring, the siren is in love with the sailor and wants her to himself so it makes sense that she doesn't like seeing proof of the sailor and maria's love for eachother

I really have a feeling that the words she is singing have no meaning to her whatsoever. She doesn't care about him, she just wants to take him for her own. The reason she sings such sad and thoughtful lyrics is simply another ruse to lure in said jolly sailor. For example, when she says, "I pray the day to come that, he's never more to roam". This isn't her wanting him to not sail anymore, this is her wanting to take him overboard and drown him, as she did with many other "jolly sailors". Oh also, I'm pretty sure that some cultures say that the sirens are attracted to gold and it is sometimes used to trap the creatures. This could be why she says that she disdains all glittering gold. While she is attracted to it, it is a possible death sentence. And in the song, a warning to the sailors that it could be the only way to escape her.

That's what a siren is... she doesn't care about the man. She enchants him, bewitches him, then lures him with treasure that she hates because that's all the man wants, not her, so she drags him overboard into the murky depths & drowns him.

My dad was a merchant officer 30 years at sea 🌊 I’d wait months for him to return. Each time growing up. He would write us letters from different countries. I live by the coast so love the sea. He passed away 21 years ago. But I love the ocean 🌊 and remember him.
