The older sailor with the white hair is underappreciated. He didn't fall for any mermaid, he saved Scrum by hitting her in the head and he sliced the flying mermaid in the air! He even survived through the end to serve under Barbossa!
As someone who is VERY obsessed with mermaids and sirens, this scene makes me extremely happy. The actresses did an amazing job with the acting. I'm not sure if the tails are CGI, or actual tails, but they look great.

This scene had a real sense of fantasy and fear about it. Compared to the usual silliness of Johnny Depp falling 100 feet and getting up unharmed, saying something not even remotely funny, this was one of the best things to happen in the franchise.
One thing about this, I'm sure most of us would've liked to see this on the soundtrack. Even though it's not on there, that's what makes this scene and song so good, The exclusivity and the surreal music in the background just makes it all that more special.
The only dissapointing thing I found was how well built up and planned the mermaid attack was and yet they really failed in the follow up attack. The mermaids had at least 6 by the boats distracting the men so when she pulled the first sailor in, they should have all just grabbed one each and pulled them in. The diving over the boat was beautiful, it looked cool but overall, didn't accomplish much.

for people who is mind blown to know this is Disney: they made about 10 horror movies in the 80s. the sixth sense is a Disney movie. also, the animated films in the golden age made kids pee their pants in theatres and still do. completely showing that Disney has always been capable for creating fear.
The mermaid portrayers were chosen for having "exotic sense, an otherworldly sensibility, but also under those layers a deadly quality", according to Director Rob Marshall, and had to take swimming lessons to learn movements such as the dolphin and eggbeater kicks.
It makes them seem more intriguing, though, because it's not so easy to get the tear because what looks like such a beautiful creature with a voice like honey could actually be a deadly killer (the neat thing is using a seductive power to make men knowingly follow them to their own deaths) :) And it makes the story between Syrena and Philip all the better :)
Finally someone who has the same views as me. I hate it when people think sharks and other apex predators as ferocious, mindless killing monsters and uses that to justify killing them to the point of extinction. Its not like go and purposely hunt humans. We invade their territory and expect not to have any consequences.
