If anything i applaud this movie for portraying mermaids as they should be in lore.
Yeah, instead of making every mermaid like the one from the little mermaid book. That ONE mermaid was really an rarity. Most to all of them are like these ones.

I LOVED this scene because it really made the mermaids bad ass and a force to be reckoned with. I loved how they were beautiful and seductive but completely lethal and powerful.

how can people find this scary? i thought it was beautiful. of course you know something bad is going to happen from the start, but the beauty is undeniable regardless.

This scene is perfection. I'm tired of seeing the sweet, innocent mermaids.
Legit the best part of the movie. They did a great job of showing why men of the time might have been both drawn to/terrified by stories of merfolk.
I love how it looks like they rise out of the water so easily. Makes them look more powerful and elegant.
The only dissapointing thing I found was how well built up and planned the mermaid attack was and yet they really failed in the follow up attack. The mermaids had at least 6 by the boats distracting the men so when she pulled the first sailor in, they should have all just grabbed one each and pulled them in. The diving over the boat was beautiful, it looked cool but overall, didn't accomplish much.

Scrum just manages to survive the whole attack, when Blackbeard sees him caught in the net Scrum splutters out 'I'm in love'. That is a totally outragous scene, completly funny as hell lol xD

One thing about this, I'm sure most of us would've liked to see this on the soundtrack.
Even though it's not on there, that's what makes this scene and song so good, The exclusivity and the surreal music in the background just makes it all that more special.
This scene had a real sense of fantasy and fear about it. Compared to the usual silliness of Johnny Depp falling 100 feet and getting up unharmed, saying something not even remotely funny, this was one of the best things to happen in the franchise.
I find this depiction of mermaids absolutley fascinating.

I love the sudden snap from them being beautiful and seductive and resting on the boat to being lethal and frenzied in a split second

for people who is mind blown to know this is Disney: they made about 10 horror movies in the 80s. the sixth sense is a Disney movie. also, the animated films in the golden age made kids pee their pants in theatres and still do. completely showing that Disney has always been capable for creating fear.

The one saving grace in the otherwise awful On Stranger Tides. I honestly love this scene. It feels like a scene from the original 3 pirates movies.

I love the way Gemma Ward is as a mermaid (Tamara) with the tail also fangs; same for four of the other mermaids.

As forgettable as the movie was, this scene was flat out awesome! I would have loved it better if the entire movie was about Pirates vs. Mermaids.

It makes them seem more intriguing, though, because it's not so easy to get the tear because what looks like such a beautiful creature with a voice like honey could actually be a deadly killer (the neat thing is using a seductive power to make men knowingly follow them to their own deaths) :) And it makes the story between Syrena and Philip all the better :)

The mermaid portrayers were chosen for having "exotic sense, an otherworldly sensibility, but also under those layers a deadly quality", according to Director Rob Marshall, and had to take swimming lessons to learn movements such as the dolphin and eggbeater kicks.
They had Olympic synchronised swimmers portray some of the mermaids.
Mermaids and sirens are two very different creatures in mythology :)

Finally someone who has the same views as me. I hate it when people think sharks and other apex predators as ferocious, mindless killing monsters and uses that to justify killing them to the point of extinction. Its not like go and purposely hunt humans. We invade their territory and expect not to have any consequences.
