On 27 July 1985, Uganda’s national army (UNLA) overthrew President Milton Obote and installed a Military Council, under the chairmanship of his own former Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Tito Okello, as the new government.
Strangely, Gen. Okello’s deputy was not a UNLA officer but a retired former Commander of Uganda Air Force under President Idi Amin. Col. Gad Wilson Toko was Managing Director of Uganda Airlines when Obote’s fall suddenly turned him into Uganda’s Number 2.
Brig. Bazilio Olara Okello, who spearheaded the coup against Obote succeeded Gen. Tito as CDF and was promoted two grades to lieutenant General.
These three and a few other top UNLA officers invited all guerilla groups to join the Military Council saying that Obote whom they had been fighting had been removed. Except Yoweri Museveni’s NRM/NRA, all groups joined the MC and peace talks with NRM began in Nairobi.
Unfortunately, the MC government was a “union of irreconcilables” and the closest thing to a failed state. There were frequent rumours of attempted coups and defections and arrests and infiltrations, which would send jittery Ugandans fleeing the city to the villages.
It became too much that in September 1985 the Military Council arranged a press conference at the state-owned Uganda Television (UTV) to dispel the rumours. You are about to see it.
After this first part of the story of Uganda after the July coup but before Museveni’s arrival, you may wonder whether a brutal Obote regime was not better than Tito’s deadly conglomeration of irreconcilable armed groups.
And you must now subscribe to OwanaPaedia to avoid having a great future….behind you!!

Mr Owana! I highly appreciate your video historical record! I have a couple of suggestions though. 1) Title the videos consistently - for example - I cannot find "CHAOS IN GEN. TITO OKELLO'S GOV'T PART 2" which should follow part 1. I think it is titled differently. 2) Make it very obvious as to how we can support you financially by adding a link or contact.

@@samuelolara7748 What are you talking about? The video clearly shows that Okello's grasp of English was tenuous. You are probably coming from the angle that Acholi are portrayed unfairly. There's this unspoken rivalry between Acholi and Langi over the position of Army Chief-of-Staff. The Acholi believed Okello deserved the position, but the Head-of-State overlooked him and instead appointed Opon Acak. The head-state had three options: Opon Acak, Bazilio Okello and Nanyumba. Opon Acak was a known drunkard, Bazilio didn't have the requisite education, as for Nanyumba, I don't know. Anyway, Obote was overthrown to enable an Acholi become Army Chief-Of-Staff. I don't think it ended well, even for the Acholi. Since the overthrow of Obote, we non-Bantu people of Uganda have declined in everything that can be measured. Even average height has decreased!

Also the mutiny in the UNLA was not about ranks, that is the history you have been told and you have swallowed that bait, it is far from that. You need to examine our history right from 1962 to 1985 when the army mutined. Otherwise you will comtinue to be led by Owanapedia in his skewed narratives of our history.

Translator for Gen Bazilio? To prove widespread rumours that he had not gone to school? No one in the country was foolish enough to suggest it. Not even Hon Dr. Ojok Mulozi who was Minister for Information. Believe me Gen. Bazilio may have sounded modest in this clip but....

The historical facts is much appreciated, but i suggest you discard the military attire, which may negate our impression of your impartiality , given the fact that in Uganda today possession of military material is treason unless one is secretly endorsed , for example the recent issue with Andrew Mwenda, otherwise the subscribers my started to unsubscribe as Ugandans are sensitive to political partiality/ impartiality.

Tony, thank you so much for these historical footages. To be honest,I know many are going to hate my comment, but for me, its after digging up on our history that I turned from a big hater to lover of president M7. Weaknesses aside, we have NEVER in the history of our republic had a better president for the country and it's a bit scary to imagine the future without him.
I'll await the abuses to follow this

Rodger Village I think the history you read, were written by those who hate Uganda. Otherwise, what is it that Museveni has done which the past leaders did not do for the good of Ugandans? At least, after indpendent, the government that came to power lead by the UPC, headed by late Milton Obote built new public health facilities in the name of national hospitals through out Uganda, more than 20 of them. Those health facilities had medicines, docotors and nurses including other workers. This is why in 1969 when there was an assasination attempt on the life of late Obote by a muganda who just hated the president because he is not a mugada, he was treated in Lugogo. In the same health facitities most of the children were born in Uganda. Today, the current leader go abroad to get treatement. How many leaders from other countries come to get gealth treatement in Uganda health facilities? Most of you care about tribalism but not the country that is why you always try to praise Museveni who has killed Ugandans more than any other leaders before. You people are very strong in portraying the late Obote as a bad leader yet they could not take him to any court. Some of us will not leave Museveni and his murderous the moment they are out of power. They will face the law by all means.

Habib Magala, corruption as a cancer on the whole of Africa even worse in states like Kenya that have never had a successful military coup. In fact the way I see it Museveni has controlled it well in Uganda compared to other E.A states like Kenya, Congo-DRC, S.Sudan, Burundi...etc.
