I would never deny this but the KGB are right when they said ( that no one will know about Lagasov or hear of his achievements) and the proof is that you cant find a lot of books or info about him speaking personally I found (1book in Russian) and 2 books in English that has the story of Chernobyl and the story of Prof: Lagasov.

@@rockytucker7480 My personal opinion is... I'm from a country behind the Iron Curtain. The circumstances preventing him from telling the full truth in Vienna may have been very complicated. He himself or his family (he did have a family, even grandchildren, though he was relatively young) might have been threathened. Anyway, he did tell a lot in Vienna what should not have been told, so to speak. 5-hour speech, q&a session. Just the physical exhaustion from such a speech must have been overwhelming. He may have suffered from PTSD after what he witnessed at the site. He indeed was gravely ill, was diagnosed with chronic (radiation) pancreatitis which means being in constant pain, only worsened by meals, so the patient rather skips meals to avoid the pain. It was not the state and the KGB who finished him off. His colleagues at Kurchatov did by denying whatever suggestions he came up with to enhance safety at nuclear power plants. They scorned and bullied him out of jealousy, because the director of the institute wanted him to be his successor, and some carrierist morons just could not bear the thought that the new boss would be an inorganic chemist who would certainly start radical reforms, clearing out all their beloved rat nests, so to speak. From all of this I think he had two main motifs: he did not want his family and his beloved wife to have to watch his suffering and deterioration helplessly any longer, and committing suicide was his last, desperate, irreversible act to make his dang colleagues understand his point. He was driven to suicide by their ingnorance, stupidity and jealousy. He suffered gravely from radiation sickness, probably PTSD and depression. His death indeed caused shockwaves in the Soviet scientific community, and, as it is told at the end of the series, RBMK reactors were indeed retrofitted with safety measurements, including the redesign of the control rods. But all this came too late, and did not resurrect him from his grave. And there are many others who think he was directly murdered, knowing he won't stop until he succeeds with his reforms and telling the truth. I absolutely understand this opinion. People indeed can be this evil, murdering someone and then staging it as a suicide. Strongest detail from what I doubt it was a direct murder is that when he left his workplace on the 26th of April, 1988, he took his two favourite photos from his desk home, and spent hours in the evening browsing family photos. His wife said it was somehow weird, but still none of his family members were aware of the impending tragedy. So, in summary, I think it was a suicide, but he was driven to that suicide by the evil of his certain colleagues.
