Those firefighters had no idea what they were dealing with. The URSS didn't train anyone of them against those kind of situations. It was like sending a soldier with his rifle, to a nuclear war combat.
I still watch this occasionally, as it's one of the best miniseries ever done. It's hard to believe that Craig Main, the creator of the Jackass series built this, but he did. And it's unbelievably beautiful and painful. There is also an excellent podcast, hosted by Peter Sagal that interviews Craig episode by episode. He explains the details, the reasons for artistic license, and the meaning behind every episode.
I have been interested in the Chernobyl story for years, I don't know exactly why a guy from Canada became interested in the tragedy, but I was, and still am. When I saw the HBO series being made I got it on DVD and ... for a 4 part series it is a journey of tragedy, heartbreak, human error so much wasted life.. I for one will NEVER forget those who died from this tragedy and those who caused it. This edit is a masterpiece of haunting tragedy.
Update (8/23/24) the last train out of (the old NPN) station as seen on this video was last night. The station is now owned by Csx. It is an end of an area.

WE NEED SOME MEN to go into the basement and find the valve to open so that the water collected in the basement can be drained out so if... when the hot mess breaks thru the floor of the containment... it doesn't vaporize the water and cause a catastrophic... more catastrophic steam EXPLOSION. of course the radiation in that area is off the charts so... we need some MEN to go under the reactor and dig dig dig so that we can pump cooling nitrogen under the reactor so it (might) not burn thru the bottom of the whole thing , burn thru the soil and hit the ground water and cause a even worse steam explosion that will poison the ground water... continent of ... half of europe?
I always found Chernobyl interesting, as it was my grandfather' and his family's home town. They left around the time of the Russian Revolution. The framing town of Chetnobyl was about 10 miles south of the reactor.
Super montage of visuals to the music ! I'm not sure I recall the footage of the dying man at 2:49 ...was it not in the original transmission ...or have I just forgotten it ? Fascinating and powerful series, the State Lackeys were infuriating ! I visited there in 2011, before the gigantic Shelter Object was put into place .....

The Russians in this movie all talk and act like bad Vito Corleone impersonations. Talking in hoarse mumbles, and scowling all the time.
Superb European - mostly British - actors enunciating clearly in English. They are playing the key roles, which are Russian.
Everyone from Russia and Ukraine says this is just the biggest BS ever made. Hopefully, the real story will come out one day.
