He also had the idea to set this process in motion, (and it wasn't easy some jurisdictions wouldn't help) and he also was instrumental in identifying ONS as EAR now GSK.
I TOTALLY agree...This is the FIRST detective/investigator that Ive EVER seen and heard give an EXTREMELY informational interview in this stage of a case that hasnt even been to trial yet ..You usually hear after EVERY question...I cant answer this and I cant answer that .but NOT THIS GUY ... ompletely the opposite..Ive seen this thumbnail pop up over and over in my feed and I deliberately ignored it because I felt it would be BORING and he would portray arrogance superiority but boy I was WRONG....BEST INTERVIEW ive seen EVER

He said NINETEEN EIGHTY TWO twice or three times, not 92, then she makes him think he said 92 and apologizes to her, thinking he did say 92. I never like criticizing anyone, but this lady doesn't listen right.

Either way, if you know this case, there are so many dates, and they span such a long period of time, its often easy to get turned around.

For Holes to keep his composure for the entire interview without blasting this unprepared, uninformed interviewer shows how relaxed and patient he is. This lady was atrocious.
Best part was when she almost got through her question, "So, was this a RAPE victim or..." before she caught herself. Yeah. I don't think the guy would be calling up one of his murder victims. And certainly Denny's wasn't in the practice of hiring murder victims as servers. Extras on the set of the "Thriller" video, sure (it was 1982, the video came out the next year), but Denny's servers? That ain't gonna fly with Kitchen Cops. (And I don't mean to make light of the victim's experience. I DO mean to criticize poor journalism).
Paul Holes is such a polite and gracious guest! But words cannot express how AWFUL and sloppy this interviewer was. Good Lord. Imagine how much valuable information we could have gleaned if she knew what she was doing.
It is like she knows nothing about the topic nor the person she is interviewing. Paul is and has always been a treasure trove of knowledge on this case, he carried the interview with a minimal effort while she was bungling it, even managing to convince him at one point that he misstated dates when in fact she just wasn't fully paying attention while he spoke. A real shame.
She did fine, she asked solid follow up questions, allowed him to answer fully. this case does not shine law enforcement in a great light in terms of them being non linear thinkers.
I'm usually pretty big on protection of privacy, but cops have a LOT of power, so it's probably not a bad idea for them to cough up a DNA profile as a precaution. Iirc, military members already have to do it, mostly for identification purposes, but still, their DNA is on file, so if it's good enough for service members, it's good enough for cops, who can literally ruin lives on a whim. A dirty cop is a horribly dangerous thing, exhibit A, this jerk.
To be honest, I think DNA should be taken at birth. If you've got nothing to hide you've got nothing to worry about. It might even deter some people from committing crimes.

The Joseph James DeAngelo's of this world were once those innocent, newborn babies that had so much promise but grew up and chose a horrible path and innocent people suffered because of that. If you could go back in time to when he was born, you'd want that DNA.

Me and my sisters were almost his rape victims in 76. My father had just left for work @ 6am and me and my sisters were getting ready for school and I heard a noise coming from the front door. I had thought my father had forgotten something. I put my hand on the front door knob and began to turn it and looked through the peephole, (thank God for peepholes), and saw a man standing there with a ski mask on. Scared the shit out of me. My sister came into the room just then and I told her that there was a guy with a ski mask on trying to get in and she said don't open the door. She then yelled, 'We got a gun and you better get out of here or we're going to use it!'' He then took off on a motocross bike. We had had someone messing with our kitchen window screen somewhere around the same time, but didn't think much of it. I was just a click away from being a victim of this psychotic individual.
FYI: Holes, in the Discovery Channel documentary(a few years before GSKs arrest) stated the Golden State Killer was not the suspect in the Visalia home invader case because eyewitness statements identified a man with a different build. Turns out, GSK was the same guy. GSK moved to Auburn and changed his appearance by losing at least 30 pounds. GSK was always one step ahead, his level of sophistication is off the charts. I suspect GSK has killed well over 15 people.
Her identity was known/leaked before this interview I believe, I didn't see it when it aired and remember googling her and finding her travel blog. To be fair, regardless, it was a matter of public record--she was identified as her engagement to DeAngelo was posted in the newspaper announcements as was common practice at the time. Plus, this is clearly raw footage and not the final cut of the interview intended for broadcast. I wouldn't call it "incredibly unprofessional".
After watching this and listening to the Audible book "Evil Has A Name" I'm totally smitten with Mr. Holes. Very articulate and interesting to listen to. Well done, sir, well done.
You guys don't seem to understand how interviews in this context work. It is an entirely practical technique to ask minimal questions and to allow a source expand on them freely. In fact, you could argue that it is BETTER, because it removes the potential for a biased perspective on the behalf of the interviewer. Paul Holes is telling the story, she DOES NOT need to interject every 3 minutes with her opinion/half baked analysis. This was clearly filmed for something larger, and/or to generate 30 second bites for later newscasts. Give her a break.

thank you very much for this interview. its one of the most extended ones with key investigator paul holes. i cant find that the reporter is bad preparedat all. to all those critics: you should aknowledge that the production was done by a small tv regional channel. they dont have as much money as the big ones. they cant afford a big team of technicians and camera men. we should be greatful to have this expanded interview. cause big channels usually dont do those extended interviews . or if they do, its not publish it in complete. usually these interviews are done to tale only some sentences for a film. i m glad that they published it. fo me the content is the main focus. i never found anywhere this detailed infirmation. its great. and as i said: better to have it as dont have it.

Daniel Simon So as I said briefly in comment I was working at a movie theater. I wore a name tag. I took the bus. I stood at the bus stop many times. A couple times this creepy car with this creepy guy was parked across the way staring at me. After stopping at handfuls of bus stops, I reached my destination, looked right after stepping off bus and there was that creepy guy behind the bus. He stoped behind each bus stop! I freaked and I ran for it. I was also on the soccer team, so I was fast. Thankfully. But he had an idea of the houses I may have run in to. I peeked out the curtains and across the street, there he was.. looking in windows of where he thought I was. He was pretty close. I called the Sheriffs. They came out, he had driven off. But the next day they came in to the movie theater and said they think they got the guy and asked and if I could I'D him. I said yep, thats him. After that, they advised me to quit my job immediately for they told me he had my name and the neighborhood on a piece of paper. I not only quit but I never went back home. Same exact time as that dude was in town. So think of what you want about it. Thats the story, in somewhat brief.
I agree with the detective that he may be the scariest serial killer in history. Some are more gruesome, some have more bodies, some are still out there, but the fear he struck in victims was beyond anything I’d ever seen.
So if you listen for a couple of minutes starting around 14:00, you hear Holes say that when Deangelo was terminated for the August 1979 shoplifting arrest, during his termination process in front of an other officer, Deangelo threatened to kill the Auburn PD Chief *AND* one night during or shortly after that process, the Chief's teenage daughter comes to him in the middle on the night and says, "DADDY, THERE'S A MAN AT THE WINDOW SHINING A FLASHLIGHT INTO MY BEDROOM", and after the man escapes, unseen, the Chief finds footprints outside that window that match the M.O. of the East Area Rapist. And the Chief suspecting it was Deangelo. [UPDATE: Here is a link to an interview I just saw where the Auburn PD Chief says he DIDN'T suspect Deangelo as the man at the window. Also, he said his daughter was 4 years old, not a teenager (my mistake), and that she told him in the morning (not immediately) that the man was shining his flashlight in the middle of the night (they talk to the chief about one minute in to the video): goodmorningamerica.com/news/video/details-emerge-alleged-golden-state-killer-54903187 ] With all that, and Deangelo working in Auburn, CA the entire time of the EAR Northern California attacks, located only 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, did the Auburn Chief never entertain the possibility that EAR might be someone from his jurisdiction? Did he not familiarize himself with the M.O and profiles of the attacker (one of them being, LE/military)? Should he have been able to put two and two together?
yes, he and others should have put it together given the widespread panic and knowledge of this ongoing crime spree in the area. hindsight is 20/20, but these guys screwed up in my opinion.

Detective Holes, and his team of other law enforcement are heroes. I am so impressed with how much knowledge the detective has, and his passion about his work, and ultimately what this means to all the victims and their families.
I've always wondered how he found the time to prowl as much as he did. I wonder if he would turn up to work as an officer and then pretty much be off the radar all day long before returning at the end of his shift. I can't imagine any other way no one would notice that he was constantly not accounted for, running around town breaking into houses, calling and stalking people.
I have to be light-hearted here for a moment. This man is a solid "10." In every way. I heard him speak on one of those HLN Golden State Killer docs. and noticed what an articulate man. Not a single pause or slip when he speaks. Then I put my glasses on & thought, "Wow!! His wife is truly blessed!!!😉

The way he was able to kill in so many places and still hold down a full time LEO job was, he committed them while on duty. Used his patrol car to travel without fear of being caught/stopped. Other LEO's would have thought he was doing something work related.
I wish the interviewer would've asked Paul if he matched any of the police sketches because there was at least 3 of them and I haven't seen any young pictures of the suspect.

Paul Holes is such a polite and gracious guest! But words cannot express how AWFUL and sloppy this interviewer was. Good Lord. Imagine how much valuable information we could have gleaned if she knew what she was doing.
It is like she knows nothing about the topic nor the person she is interviewing. Paul is and has always been a treasure trove of knowledge on this case, he carried the interview with a minimal effort while she was bungling it, even managing to convince him at one point that he misstated dates when in fact she just wasn't fully paying attention while he spoke. A real shame.

She did fine, she asked solid follow up questions, allowed him to answer fully. this case does not shine law enforcement in a great light in terms of them being non linear thinkers.

I'm usually pretty big on protection of privacy, but cops have a LOT of power, so it's probably not a bad idea for them to cough up a DNA profile as a precaution. Iirc, military members already have to do it, mostly for identification purposes, but still, their DNA is on file, so if it's good enough for service members, it's good enough for cops, who can literally ruin lives on a whim. A dirty cop is a horribly dangerous thing, exhibit A, this jerk.
To be honest, I think DNA should be taken at birth. If you've got nothing to hide you've got nothing to worry about. It might even deter some people from committing crimes.

Thanks, although not everyone agrees. They think you're violating human rights and already judging a baby before he/she has lived. The Joseph James DeAngelo's of this world were once those innocent, newborn babies that had so much promise but grew up and chose a horrible path and innocent people suffered because of that. If you could go back in time to when he was born, you'd want that DNA.

Working a "cold case" is so tough! Paul Holes is an extremely intelligent Investigator. He lays out this case so well he totally makes this Interviewer simply a member of his captive audience. Holes can make millions selling books and being a reporter for a MAJOR news network. Extremely articulate man.
This KVTU reporter Amber Lee is hard to understand. I have no idea how she could be a reporter. Shuffles her papers, eats her words, does not pronounce clearly, laughs weird....Please...replace her.

Me and my sisters were almost his rape victims in 76. My father had just left for work @ 6am and me and my sisters were getting ready for school and I heard a noise coming from the front door. I had thought my father had forgotten something. I put my hand on the front door knob and began to turn it and looked through the peephole, (thank God for peepholes), and saw a man standing there with a ski mask on. Scared the shit out of me. My sister came into the room just then and I told her that there was a guy with a ski mask on trying to get in and she said don't open the door. She then yelled, 'We got a gun and you better get out of here or we're going to use it!'' He then took off on a motocross bike. We had had someone messing with our kitchen window screen somewhere around the same time, but didn't think much of it. I was just a click away from being a victim of this psychotic individual.

Paul Holes is one OP investigator. What a remarkable adherence to duty, and what a monumental service he has provided his community.
FYI: Holes, in the Discovery Channel documentary(a few years before GSKs arrest) stated the Golden State Killer was not the suspect in the Visalia home invader case because eyewitness statements identified a man with a different build. Turns out, GSK was the same guy. GSK moved to Auburn and changed his appearance by losing at least 30 pounds.
GSK was always one step ahead, his level of sophistication is off the charts. I suspect GSK has killed well over 15 people.
I don't think he ever stopped. Just his MO evolved.

Her identity was known/leaked before this interview I believe, I didn't see it when it aired and remember googling her and finding her travel blog. To be fair, regardless, it was a matter of public record--she was identified as her engagement to DeAngelo was posted in the newspaper announcements as was common practice at the time. Plus, this is clearly raw footage and not the final cut of the interview intended for broadcast. I wouldn't call it "incredibly unprofessional".
After watching this and listening to the Audible book "Evil Has A Name" I'm totally smitten with Mr. Holes. Very articulate and interesting to listen to. Well done, sir, well done.

You guys don't seem to understand how interviews in this context work. It is an entirely practical technique to ask minimal questions and to allow a source expand on them freely. In fact, you could argue that it is BETTER, because it removes the potential for a biased perspective on the behalf of the interviewer. Paul Holes is telling the story, she DOES NOT need to interject every 3 minutes with her opinion/half baked analysis. This was clearly filmed for something larger, and/or to generate 30 second bites for later newscasts. Give her a break.
I'm with you, I don't understand all the criticism, it's a relaxed conversational style as you pointed out, allowing Paul to just go, with what I'd refer to as interjections not interruptions....

@15 min, the old chief said he threatened to kill him during the firing. Then showed up with a flashlight at window. How couldn't you have missed that from memory and had DeAngelo checked out? Heck everyone in the dept thought could've been an ex cop?

thank you very much for this interview. its one of the most extended ones with key investigator paul holes. i cant find that the reporter is bad preparedat all. to all those critics: you should aknowledge that the production was done by a small tv regional channel. they dont have as much money as the big ones. they cant afford a big team of technicians and camera men. we should be greatful to have this expanded interview. cause big channels usually dont do those extended interviews . or if they do, its not publish it in complete. usually these interviews are done to tale only some sentences for a film. i m glad that they published it. fo me the content is the main focus. i never found anywhere this detailed infirmation. its great. and as i said: better to have it as dont have it.

And a “sound man” that for some reason feels he doesn’t NEED TO WEAR HIS HEADSET . HENCE the sound of all her shuffling her notes around NEEDLESSLY. And a camera operator that obviously NEVER HEARD the term.....”put it (camera) ON sticks”. All these INEPT fools make for a WAY BAD PIECE OF “BUSH LEAGUE” reporting . And Hole is what’s known as PERFECT INTERVIEWEE ! But, to me he seems like what a GREAT COP !

Given all the crimes he escaped from and kept hidden, it was incredible that De Angelo was caught and overpowered for stealing. I imagine that police are going to find him linked to countless other crimes too.
not sure if thats exactly what happened. i believe he was fired from a police force for the stealing. He was caught for the rapes/murders thru DNA + Ancestry matching. Arrested at home.
I mean he committed I believe the MOST crimes in California history so I'm sure they know most of the crimes he committed

As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I can tell you that rape is something you never, ever put behind you. Just when you think you’ve got it beaten it comes up again another destructive way.

These people are fantasy driven. Since no experience is ever going to be as good as we anticipate, the murder never matches the fantasy. So they keep on taking victims, much like an addict keeps pursuing the perfect high.

Daniel Simon So as I said briefly in comment I was working at a movie theater. I wore a name tag. I took the bus. I stood at the bus stop many times. A couple times this creepy car with this creepy guy was parked across the way staring at me. After stopping at handfuls of bus stops, I reached my destination, looked right after stepping off bus and there was that creepy guy behind the bus. He stoped behind each bus stop! I freaked and I ran for it. I was also on the soccer team, so I was fast. Thankfully. But he had an idea of the houses I may have run in to. I peeked out the curtains and across the street, there he was.. looking in windows of where he thought I was. He was pretty close. I called the Sheriffs. They came out, he had driven off. But the next day they came in to the movie theater and said they think they got the guy and asked and if I could I'D him. I said yep, thats him. After that, they advised me to quit my job immediately for they told me he had my name and the neighborhood on a piece of paper. I not only quit but I never went back home. Same exact time as that dude was in town. So think of what you want about it. Thats the story, in somewhat brief.

I agree with the detective that he may be the scariest serial killer in history. Some are more gruesome, some have more bodies, some are still out there, but the fear he struck in victims was beyond anything I’d ever seen.

So if you listen for a couple of minutes starting around 14:00, you hear Holes say that when Deangelo was terminated for the August 1979 shoplifting arrest, during his termination process in front of an other officer, Deangelo threatened to kill the Auburn PD Chief *AND* one night during or shortly after that process, the Chief's teenage daughter comes to him in the middle on the night and says, "DADDY, THERE'S A MAN AT THE WINDOW SHINING A FLASHLIGHT INTO MY BEDROOM", and after the man escapes, unseen, the Chief finds footprints outside that window that match the M.O. of the East Area Rapist. And the Chief suspecting it was Deangelo.
[UPDATE: Here is a link to an interview I just saw where the Auburn PD Chief says he DIDN'T suspect Deangelo as the man at the window. Also, he said his daughter was 4 years old, not a teenager (my mistake), and that she told him in the morning (not immediately) that the man was shining his flashlight in the middle of the night (they talk to the chief about one minute in to the video):

With all that, and Deangelo working in Auburn, CA the entire time of the EAR Northern California attacks, located only 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, did the Auburn Chief never entertain the possibility that EAR might be someone from his jurisdiction? Did he not familiarize himself with the M.O and profiles of the attacker (one of them being, LE/military)?

yes, he and others should have put it together given the widespread panic and knowledge of this ongoing crime spree in the area. hindsight is 20/20, but these guys screwed up in my opinion.

The guy has a temper, it was suspected by many people that the killer was a cop, he threatened the police chief's life, stalked his daughter in the same manner he stalked other women, AND he got fired for stealing dog repellant and a hammer. Seems like he should have been on their radar a little more than he was. Was that police chief just out to lunch or what?
Absolutely, that's a stunning revelation. The Chief and his family had a lucky escape. I'm stunned that this terrifying incident never made him question De Angelo.

Stuff like this is why i always keep a loaded handgun under my bedframe that i can easily access within 2 secods and fire within a second after that. And keep all my doors locked and make sure my security cam and light is always working in my lawn

Detective Holes, and his team of other law enforcement are heroes. I am so impressed with how much knowledge the detective has, and his passion about his work, and ultimately what this means to all the victims and their families.
His perseverance paid off to catch GSK- Thank God the families can finally rest. So sorry for the loss and grief the families had to go through.

I've always wondered how he found the time to prowl as much as he did. I wonder if he would turn up to work as an officer and then pretty much be off the radar all day long before returning at the end of his shift. I can't imagine any other way no one would notice that he was constantly not accounted for, running around town breaking into houses, calling and stalking people.

The way he was able to kill in so many places and still hold down a full time LEO job was, he committed them while on duty. Used his patrol car to travel without fear of being caught/stopped. Other LEO's would have thought he was doing something work related.

There is a sketch in Michelle McNamara’s book that is the image of how the GSK looks in his arrest photo. It’s uncanny.
