Great performance by The Supremes! What a legacy they created for the music world. Growing up to their sound was truly amazing! Diana, Mary, and Florence.
I've been carrying on and ranting and raving over Flo's voice since I read DreamGirls and bought my first Supremes tape in 1987. I think I own everything they've ever done, aside from some stuff in the vaults. I'm not crazy about their sound after Flo left.
Hullabaloo presented the Supremes at their best. Florence and Mary's mics were turned up so they could be heard equally with Diana. So the songs are actually better performed here than the actual recordings.
Actually in their earlier performances they often used overhead microphones Often just one That one usually wasn't placed in the middle, but closer to Diana, to capture her voice better, as she had a softer voice Still Florence could be heard clearly and Mary too, as she was second close to the mic In later performences Diana often had her own mic, holding in her hands or sometimes a second overhead mic, just for her with higher level to control her volume louder and to allow the sound engineer to amplify her vocals separately That's when the group sound started to get lost
Flo, you were the heart and soul of the Supremes. You also set the bar for black female group elegance on and off the stage, during this very prolific period of timeless songs, and stylish expressions of confident independence.
