My great-grandfather came from Japan and had a laundry service in battle mountain back then. His wife has been a physician back in Tokyo. She died shortly after her third child was born there.

I lived in Winnemucca in the 50s when the Todd's Number 8 turquoise mine was still in operation. I have a beautiful spider web ring my mother bought there in '54.
Battle Mountain is a great town, one of my favorites.
As a kid we would jump the train in Winnemucca, jump off in B.M. and go back later in the day by
    hopping another west bound freighter.
You've inspired me to make a visit, perhaps later this year.

It's also the home of the cultural landmark named "Tomboy Mine"

Why is it that the windows are so low on the first level of the school house? I wonder why no one ever asks about buildings that seem to be sunken into the ground on the first level. Or is it even the first level at all?

"Many Chinese people came in and helped build the railroad."
Yeah, that's one way to put it, I guess.
