I’m 6’6 and gave the unity riser and flip to center magnifier setup a try for “comfort.” I ended up taking it off and returning to lower 1/3. Due to height over bore and not getting good connection with the rifle even with a cheek riser on my stock. Just one man’s opinion 🤘
Same here... I ran the Unity risers and T1/T2 mounts for the past three years on all my setups. In the past year I've gone back to lower 1/3rd on all but two rifles. It's all about that cheek weld for me... just more consistent when shooting fast.
It's just basic physics or measurement. I am "only" 5'11 but I have a very long neck and a long face, which means carry handles with a red dot are the perfect height for ME personally where I still maintain a good cheek weld, because my eyes sit so much higher overall. This obviously doesn't apply to everyone else. Best thing is to simply test out all the various heights based on your own body type. It's the same with rails, grips, stocks etc.
One thing thats also a factor, everyone has different body size, dimensions, build. Some people have a kneck, some people don't, some have pumkin heads others wear size kid hats. 🧐
Exactly. Long neck long arms legs short torso... small as head... nothing fits properly. I have to wear XL clothes and nobody makes a small helmet that isn't 2 grand. Everytime I buy gear I have to ask if they do returns as half the things I buy dont work for me at all. Thankfully most gear and firearms companys are awesome and very forgiving with returns. I'm gonna look into a riser, never liked them because more weight hurts me over time. Broken body after the army. Maybe it's time to try this setup mostly for use with NVG.
Nah, it just really comes down to how you shoot. Body proportions dont really come into play for shooting rifles or handguns unless you're a freak of nature.
@Johnson11c That's my body, long arms, legs, kneck, short torso and small head. Finding helmets is difficult, bought my first adult bike helmet in the kids section 😅
6’6” guy here with a long neck: Having run varying heights, I’ve found that a lower 1/3 for a red dot is most ideal. Lpvos, 1.54 even. Height over bore is always a consideration. If you’re shooting distance, you can always just glance over your turret and come back on target with some good training. But, just like the other tall guy in the comments said: just another opinion.
I joined the US Army in 1986. I remember as a young infantry squad leader being able to get the old 3x colt optic to mount to the carry handle of my 20" m16. I absolutely loved how I didn't have to scrunch my neck using it. By the time I left the service in '06 I was running the m68 on a flat top m4 with a peq2. Now 18 yrs later I'm back to running the unity 2.26 mount with a dot and qd 3x magnifier with the unity flip to center mount. Back full circle for me.
OMG, I do this all the time when I'm trying figure out my optics set up and I thought I was crazy or something. I do this with Lazer mounts, set right up against a wall or flat object, and see the height difference. I'm so frigging happy to see someone talk this like you are. Thank you, sir😊
That was a great little video. Im starting to think i may need a little riser. I was gonna do the gbrs mount, way to much. I think the first mount at .8 would be best. Ill give it a go and grab the few things i have been saving for on primary arms also.
@@IronInfidel I just dont want it in my way. Sticks out to much, i feel. Just my eyes. I appreciate all you do for us helping and sharing live and help and information! Take care and hope to see more! @IronInfidel
AR platform has so little recoil that for quick close up shots you don’t really have to pocket the stock so an elevated optic is nice. Wrote this while pooping to boost the video algorithm but I dropped the phone so I had to clean it before I could send it
...you can shoot faster with a lower mount. Just cuz the rifle is forgiving doesn't mean you SHOULD negate the fundamentals. Just cuz you can doesn't mean you should.
It should be the other way around. Elevated optics help you get the whole stock in the shoulder while giving you a nice headed up ergonomic shooting position.
I mount the rifle so high on my shoulder that low mounts still work pretty well for me, but I did find a comfortable spot at 1.6 when I was playing with the Swampfox Raider. I have to put pretty high mounts on scoped carbines though, because I can't shoot from the prone on low ones.
I run the unity 2.26. Which for me is the perfect height. I will not go taller than that. I love that I can have a magnifier that flips to the center and is out of the way. People get all sprung up on height over bore. The difference between a unity mount and a lower 1/3 is about half an inch, which really is not hard to train for. I was in an on duty shooting in August with my unity riser. I feel like due to having the higher mount I was able to mount my rifle quicker than a lower 1/3, but I also train and was able to take my height over bore in consideration for a nice t box shot. In reality though for 99% of the time height over bore doesn’t really matter in combat shooting. I know the autistics will roast me for that last comment but it’s true. Remember I said 99% of the time. I know there are instances that require absolute precision.
I had a uhity fast riser mount, had a training day with it, I didn't like it, so i took it off. I spent the moment on a flip-to-center Mount and I wasn't too impressed because it felt in the way and doesn't take full advantage of the EOTECHs wide field of view. Also having no cheek weld was affecting my shots at distance. I spent the money, but chose to go back to lower 1/3rd.
A low-cost way of trying different optic heights is to use your existing mount with cheap picatinny risers that you can buy online. Not the most durable thing, but perfectly fine for testing and you can even stack more than one up to see what works best for you
As with everything, there is a toooon of factors at play here. Persons build, type of optic and purpose of the rifle etc. However I will say for me personally 1.5-1.7 seems to be the sweet spot for both lpvos and red dots as a person who is average height. If I’m running an LPVO with a top red dots I run the scope at 1.5 bc I can comfortably get behind the scope and the top dot red dots as low on it as I can to try and reduce height over bore as much as I can. If I’m running just a normal red dot and mag, 1.7 is super fast and comfy for me.
Alot of it depends on the optic. Something like an eotech has such a large window that mount height matters less then on something smaller like a T2 or lpvo.
I wondered wouldn't having a curved stock like on the AK alleviate the need for a taller mount with less neck pain? Does anyone else think it's time to change the design of the AR flat stock 🤷♂️
If it's the original AR buffer system, you are stuck. Then again Stoner also designed the sights high enough on top of the carry handle because of this. Optics/sights low on the gun were never the intention. Get a bufferless design and your stock options are numerous.
I run the unity riser on a T2. I love it, but I definitely need to remember to aim higher 😂. I good at it on a silhouette target, but on printed scenario targets can be tricky depending on the size of the head. Definitely helps for passive shooting in a gas mask or under nods. It’s a training issue on my part. I need to get more reps for that perfect headshot. That said I’m only off by less than an inch. Yes I’m aware a inch can be a big deal 😂
Matt Pranka has proven you don't need a Unity Riser to use a promask or nods. It's all about consistency. Lower 1/3rd is perfect but people feel the need to reinvent the wheel every 6 months in the gun industry.
@@armorers_wrenchI prefer the unity mainly for being able to have a magnifier that flips down to the center. And the height over bore difference is minimal. It’s all about training. I was in an on duty shooting in August at a very close distance. Guess what I remembered my height over bore. Which 99% of the time height over bore is not going to matter in a combat scenario, unless it’s an HR situation. And Pranka thinks he is the end all be all when it comes to shooting.
GBRS optic mounts (Hydra 2 etc) are the best, and yes they are expensive but provide several features that help with other accessories. Worth the cost!
