I wonder if the translation takes the original poetry of the Gravemind's speaking pattern? You'll notice in English he speaks in verse, including rhyming couplets, probably to demonstrate his intelligence. I doubt that a translation could carry that effect to another language, but I don't speak Japanese so I can't tell for sure! I also agree that the translation audio loses the gravitas of the multi-layered voices from the English version.
i know this is pretty late, but i can tell you that at least in german they managed to immitate his rythmic way of talking quite well, which is no surprise, since the languages are so similar. however not only do the graveminds lines never rhyme, they even changed some words for no reason. for example instead of saying that master chief is "machine and nerve" he is "machine and bravery"(probably for lip sync?) and instead of the arbiter being "the more deluded" he is easy to trick he also talks in a very formal way to the arbiter and the master chief which weirded me out a bit when i watched it just now i would imagine that for a language like japanese, that has pretty much nothing in common with english it is way worse than that
I looked this up because I was kinda interested in how the japanese dub adapted the gravemind's habit of speaking in iambic pentameter, since that is traditionally associated with english poetry. I wonder if in the japanese dub, he speaks in Haikus or something. lol
I wonder if the Japanese look at Western media and say "Sub is better!" or do they hate our stupid American accents? Perhaps they just know English down there? English is a popular language.
@SonOfPiratehunter Maybe it is just me but I find all Japanese voices to sound extremely weak and feminine. There are some Japanese voices that sound slightly deeper and stronger but not enough to change my opinion
The only thing is does the Japanese dub take the gravemind's poetic way of speaking? If not then the dub can't be that good since the way the gravemind speaksnis a big part of this cutscenes
