This song was constantly on the Vh1 top ten list the week after Easter in 2002, I was in the CCU recovering from a failed suicide attempt. There was something about waiting for the daily countdown to watch this video that started giving me a reason to start looking forward to something for a change. 45 days later and in a mental hospital I still looked forward to hearing it play on the radio. Eventually I found other things to look forward to and though I won't claim that this song saved my life, it definitely taught me to get out of my head and to be hopeful for something. If anyone is reading this and struggling for a reason to keep trying, its been 22 long years since I was there and I am so grateful to have gotten more time to work through things I thought were impossible. Don't give up
This song is my high school nights, how the air felt different when you were younger in a small town. Moreover, this band, this era, this song bring a certain someone to mind and bring back the same butterflies and chills as the first night we spent together and how this song is almost magnetic enough for me to reach back out. But here is gone.
Monica Dahl Yeah. I remember when I was in high school and also seeing outcasts who were great people but the design of life got in their way. And I think about Johnny's divorce and how it's such a mess with the conflicting emotions. I like how the song doesn't really slow down like the intensity of thoughts after a loss.
+Jonathan Sturgeon that's probably why I get a huge surge of feels whenever the chorus comes. It's like this huge swell and kinda breaks at the chorus but stays strong afterward too. Can it be 2007 again PLEASE?
This song takes me back to my Teenage / young adult years in the 90's and early 2000's. When life in general was so carefree. Living and enjoying the moment without phones and social media
I remember about 10-11 years ago, my brother would hook his discman on a speaker and play this on repeat before he goes to sleep. He'd been gone for 10 years next year, but his memory will live on in me. Here is gone, but never forgotten. I love you bro. Always.
This is very well-crafted 90's alt-rock melancholy. One of my faves for sure. I'm not usually a fan of "self-pitying, failed relationship" songs, but this one strikes a different vibe with me. Astute lyrics, nice chord progression and melody ("... annnnd I.... WANT to get free...). The chorus is almost hopeful. Solid, solid song. Heard it growing up in the 90's, knew it was Goo. Was a fan of "Slide". Heard it again just recently, and brought me back here.
It perfectly captures the tension of a casual relationship that you kinda know won't grow into anything. John is a master at capturing emotional situations.
my god I've listened to this song so many times at this point and it never gets boring in the slightest. This is probably my favorite one by them. Such an underrated band
Same here, I love listening to their music and watch their music videos too. In fact out of all my so-called friends. I'm the only one who appreciates real music like this.😎👍
September 16th 2024! Been a damn tough year. I was 14 the first time I heard GGD! 30 years later and their music still helps me get through tough times!
@@ChewweiLee-x5c Mysteriously, in three days, I will celebrate my birthday and turn 21. ‘A sip of whiskey and a smile in life’ seems like words that will leave a lasting impression. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, to you, whose country I don’t even know.
There’s a certain delicacy in the way the instruments are played in the intro of this song - almost like the arrangement is telling you to handle the topic at hand with tact. Then the lyrics kick in and you just know that it IS a topic you ought to handle with tact. Still among my all-time favs!
One of the best friend zone songs ever made. Anyone, if ur in the friend zone being used for validation or as an emotional tampon you need to cut it off.
Back then they knew how to make even relatively mainstream pop-rock like this sound beautiful and emotional. Which certainly cannot be said for today's soulless edm garbage.
John’s music lyrics/song writing will stand the test of time. I don’t think there has ever been a song writer who hits so many emotions on every level. Got to see them this year 2022, it was MAGICAL!
Dang! It just hits the soul the second it starts! They really make magical tunes. What a talented group! I hope the Goo Goo Dolls are still around when they are 65....I bet they will still sound perfect! Long live the Dolls!!
For sure! Music from the mid 90s to the mid 2000s is simply the best... and not just alternative rock either even though it's by far my favorite genre! This is one of my top 5 favorite songs ever.
I grew up listening to these guys and it's amazing how much these lyrics speak to me. I'm 31 now and reminds me so much of the good times growing up and all the heart breaks that came along with it.. reminiscing of past girls that come and gone. all the what could haves.. will never stop listening to these guys 💯
This song reminds me of being young and walking around Amsterdam with nothing but a broken heart, a backpack, and a curious spirit. This whole album is gold.
You wouldn't change it for the world now after having gone through that experience... We live and learn.. Music guides our souls core to that time and place less or more traveled, sometimes forgotten 😎

I'm listening to this song and looking at an amazing sky just thinking about the 90s and when my mom was alive. I feel so joyful it makes me want to cry. Thank you goo goo dolls for being a soundtrack to my special memories.
This was always one of my favorite music videos as a kid. To me for my interpretation the teens were dead. Possibly a car crash of some kind or tragic accident. They explore their former town with the freedom teens usually dream of. But it came at a terrible price and now they try to occupy themselves as best they can so they don't see life go on without them. And now the next step for them is deciding when to move on and not haunt their former lives. That's what it's always been to me.
I remember watching this a lot as a kid too! I can remember really random parts of the video vividly like the girls face in the shadow and the guy tossing the bottle. Completely agree with your interpretation.
Wow. I always saw it more as kids feeling unfulfilled, unnoticed, while the world and life for everyone else goes on around/without them; the guy tossing the TP in the convenience store, for example, in slow motion while everyone else is hustling about their errands. I definitely get an SP “1979” vibe for that portion of the video, and that’s what always brings me back to more of a literal teen angst/depression interpretation. But I must say I REALLY like yours.
In 2015 my marriage collapsed suddenly,I found myself playing this song on repeat and it helped me cope with my marriage breakdown.I knew the song was about being letdown by your partner,so it struck a chord with me at that time and it helped me heal quicker. This is easily the best song to listen to, if you want to recover from a marriage breakdown.Very therapeutic, thank you Goo goo dolls for this great number.
Hope things are better for you now that some of the dust has settled on that divorce. I'm 37, never been married, I can only imagine the heartbreak you're going through
You feel an emotion in relation to time. You know it's out there....you know it's out there....somehow here is gone. It always is. Thank you Goo Goo Dolls
An amazing man took me to see these guys, he passed away this year. At least I got to see them play this song with him. A memory of my favorite band with my favorite person. I love you Wilson ❤️
A song I come back to once in awhile. This video is a great reminder of how carefree our youth is. Just hanging out with friends with one goal in mind: forget our problems for awhile. Then time grips us and that innocence is gone. We can only hope that we are well enough to take care of ourselves or that someone will help take care of us.
Goo Goo Dolls played a private party for about 80 of us for two hours. Easily one of the best nights, and there have been a huge number of great ones, in my entire life. I have seen them in concert 10 times since that night and have never been disappointed. They're great guys, down-to-earth, with talent and musical passion that is off the charts. I've seen every major and upcoming act in the last 30+ years, if you haven't seen Goo Goo Dolls live, do it first chance you get. Their shows are fantastic, extremely tight, stuffed with hit after hit after hit, and packed with energy. You will not forget the show!
It's so weird - I was never a big Goo Goo Dolls fan and honestly really didn't listen to this song a lot, but when I do occasionally hear it I can FEEL the era and time it was wrote in. It's a weird thing, and hard to explain. These songs literally can take us back in time, just by their sound and feel, even if we don't have a connection to the specific song.
Im going to leave this here. So those kind enough to leave a like will know they brought me back here to enjoy this amazing song and reminisce about better times. LIVE,LOVE,LIFE❤
This band has had an astronomical influence on pop music and honestly pop culture for the last almost 30 years! They deserve some serious recognition for this. Even if you havent listened to the Goos, you have most certainly heard their music.
It's so sad when you remember your youth and get nostalgic, as it just shows how you have aged and how fast time goes by. But it also makes you extremely happy, knowing how great these times were and how you grew up with real music like this, not with today's soulless garbage.
As a kid growing up in small-town India, I had no idea what this song was about when I watched it late-night on TV. But this is one of my most nostalgic songs about nostalgia I was never a part of.
2025 and this song is still as good as when it was first released

"I thought I lost you somewhere, but you were never really ever there at all" quite possibly the greatest line ever uttered in a song.
That line hurts
I know right, it just keep you wondering. Especially when your in a relationship that's in the edge of breaking up.
Lines like this drifted in one ear and out the other when I was a teenager, but now, they resonate, because I GET IT.
Ummmm, couldn't have picked a better synopsis. Stole my thoughts and words. Best line ever, and yes it hurts as well. Thats life.
I think the best line of this song is
And I won't tempt to be, all you need
This song is criminally underrated.
I completely agree, I also feel this band is entirely, criminally underrated.
Simply untrue. This band has had their prime time and fortune.
Underrated by who?i dont like my fave bands to go mainstream its enough attention..if they go mainstream they get pressurized to change
so true

Does the third "yeah" in the song get anyone else to melt? His voice is, wow! ❤

I saw them almost 7 years ago for my 21st birthday. They definitely were amazing.
LIVE,LOVE,LIFE❤
This song helped me get through a dark period in my life. It's so refreshing to listen to it in 2019. Man these guys were awesome.
Same here
honestly they help me get through every day. This song has a whole lot of meaning in it for me
@@baileyb4470 Same here.
Are!!!
GGDs are therapy for me!
Great group I miss those days
Pareil .
This song is so beautiful, one of my all time favorites. I so wish I wasn’t 1 or 2 years old when it came out, so I could’ve enjoyed this time period!
Check out iris, slide, black balloon great band
@@olympian3 Oh trust me I have lol. All great songs. I know a great deal of their discography.
This song really resonated with me while i was going through a separation and subsequent divorce, it kept me sane and sober.
Quando uscì questa canzone comprai il singolo...stupenda
This band has had an astronomical influence on pop music and honestly pop culture for the last almost 30 years! They deserve some serious recognition for this. Even if you havent listened to the Goos, you have most certainly heard their music.
Everyone's heard iris but they have so many other amazing songs.
2:34 "And I don't need the fallout, of all the past that's in between us" holy crap I felt that line
don't you just hate that when a lyric hits you in the gut and explodes? ggd tends to do that a lot, fuck 'em lol
One of my favorite songs. I love these guys.
This brings me waaay back, every time I listen to it.
I pray you find this music in your lifetime.
Me too, other wise AI and computers degrade human creativity.
John is just such an amazing songwriter. Blows my mind.
When the song takes you back to those moments and you can now smile about them even more.
I just think of the old times whenever I hear this song
true
It's so sad when you remember your youth and get nostalgic, as it just shows how you have aged and how fast time goes by. But it also makes you extremely happy, knowing how great these times were and how you grew up with real music like this, not with today's soulless garbage.
Never left here Goo Goo Dolls awesome love this band
back to ninetees....great decade of alternative rock....cool stuff....
Early 2000s mate. 2001 0r 2002
This was released in 2002. But then, what's the difference, naturally the early 00s were still heavily influenced by the 90s.
Best band on Earth.
Agree!
Brendon Long Black Lab is a close second XD you should check em out you won't be dissapointed.
Hablachuga LMAO!!!!!
One of the best!
No its metallica
Love the rhythm guitars on this.
Rhythm guitars super awesome!!
As a kid growing up in small-town India, I had no idea what this song was about when I watched it late-night on TV. But this is one of my most nostalgic songs about nostalgia I was never a part of.
