Your videos are so educational, inspiring and fun to watch. As an owner of 3 older bmws (1991 850i/6speed, 2000 M5 and 97 540i sport/6speed) they have Zero rust but the 850i has some paint fade on top of rear bumper and the 540i roof has some paint oxidation which I may attempt to repaint . the 540i’s value hasnt appreciated like the 850i so no harm there in trying especially afterwatching some of you’re videos. Some of the real world scenarios that you post (rattle can paint job, cheap spray gun tests etc) makes people feel confident enough and removes the intimidation of painting their car on a budget.

I’m doing rain guards, and a spoiler kit on the bottom of my car. I was told, use a maroon scuff pad, clean with a grease and oil remover, then wipe down with an alcohol? Then add my plastic adhesive, prime, then paint. Does that sound ok to you? Thanks. I bought the spoiler kit off EBay, and it comes shiny, hence the scuff pad. After painting, I’m adding a 2k clear with the bladder in the bottom of the can.
I was always taught to clean the raw plastic with a good plastic cleaner ( like your RM) before scuffing with scotch pad and scuff stuff. I did not see you do that here.
Have a question? I have learned so much from watching your videos. My husband and I are painting a club car ds we purchased a couple months ago. We decided on The Rustolium 2 X Acrylic Enamel. We started with the front end. It dried so fast applying it. We used Deep blue. Their primer dried to fast also. No I'm wondering about the clear I bought. Can I use a different brand or? On top of the Rustolium? please any help will be well appreciated!
Love watching your videos, I’ve learned a lot from watching you. One question I had, after the clear has dried on a plastic bumper, do you need to cut and buff it with compound and polish or is that only needed on metal parts? Thanks for the vids and keep up the good work!
It’s a little late but maybe can help others, depends on product and/or how the clear lands. If you have obvious runs or fisheyes, you may have to wet sand and what not. I am no professional, but have had pretty good success in multiple projects. Like you I have learned a lot especially from Brian. It is an art, and with a little knowledge, you can polish the biggest turd out there.
How about a demo about which sealers to use with which colors and why. Also I know there are some manufacturers that use tinted sealers or primers under their base. Maybe an demo or explanation on that?
Nice job, with all that work and time involved with money in all those steps, would it be worth it to just order the bumper already prepainted? Or is that costly
I'm in the same boat. These pros throw some reducer on their primer and poof they got sealer. I got the SEM flexible primer surfacer can to try. Says it seals, but it's not a two part 🤔 not sure if I'm gonna use this and go for it, or add an epoxy primer 2k... But it's also not an expensive car... 🤔
Hey Brian, great video! My only questions is the 902 plastic cleaner. If I’m using the bulldog Abrasive prep and clean that states it removes “release agents” do I still need the 902 Plastic cleaner to release mould agents ? I guess I’m going to find out in 2 days when I paint my First plastic bumper! Lol but thanks for the great vids, I’ll be able to buy my GTR soon because of you! Lol
I just wet sand lightly with a grey pad and 2 light coats of adhesion promoter and never have a problem,,, only time I ever did was cleaning it with anything but tack cloth
Great channel and learning alot!! Question; I am painting a new grill and glares. I sanded thru a spot on the primer and missed it until I had a coat of finish paint on it. If subsequent coats don't cover the bb sized spot, can I use a tiny paint brush and dab on adhesion promoter then coat the spot with paint or will that mess up my finish?
Great vid, I just did this a couple months ago for the first time and it was a fun learning experience. Not a new bumper, repaired a crack and repainted a peeling old bumper that was painted by a local body shop and had Doritos-sized paint sections falling off (that shop went out of business, wonder why?). I made some noob mistakes but did use aerosol adhesion promoter and overall it came out looking pretty good for a first attempt...after I redid the 'noob mistakes' section anyway. I used 2k urethane primer, base, and 2K urethane clear, fingers crossed it holds up. Getting the old paint off was annoying but Smart Strip paint remover and a Ryobi pressure washer removed most of it.
Hey Brian, so the only problem I run into is after spraying the adhesive promoter and I go straight into spraying my sealer/primer it always comes out rough and I end up having to sand it with 600 and 800. Any tips on laying the sealer/primer down smoother so I can go straight into base coat and not have to sand primer ? Thank you again!
Nice video. Seeing all the steps, I understand why it's expensive getting these items painted. I stopped by my Chrysler dealership to get pricing for painting a couple plastic molded 24"x 13" x 2" hood scoops. It's my first estimate, but I was given $200 excluding installation for both. I'm curious what other shops will charge. I was going to use Mopar paint in rattle cans, but after watching your video. The prep may be my downfall. Thanks again for your video.

How to paint HDPE: Wear gloves and a resparator, not just a dust mask. Mask of all areas not to be painted. Remove all oil and fingerprints with Acetone or MEK. Do not use Turpentine. 1. Using a green scotchbrite pad, dull the HDPE plastic. Sand in circles. 2. Clear untinted PVC Solvent wait 30 minutes 3. Second coat of PVC Solvent. Wait 30 minutes 4. Spray paint plastic primer lighter than final color, Rustoleum Plastic Primer. Light coat. Wait 6 hours 5 Sand any rough spots or runs with 320 grit. 6. Spray paint plastic primer lighter than final color, Rustoleum Plastic Primer. Medium coat. Wait 6 hours. 7. Sand with 320 or 400 grit. 8. Using an airbrush or fine spray paint gun, not a spraycan, Apply Clear POR epoxy paint, thinned. Medium coat. This provides a surface any paint will stick to.But it must be a continous coverage, not spotty. This will prevent deep scratches. Wait 12 hours. 7. Sand with 320 or 400 grit to remove gloss. 10. Paint with your favorite spray paint. Repeat coats until all sanding marks dissappear. 11.. Using an airbrush or fine spray paint gun, not a spraycan, Apply Clear POR epoxy paint, thinned. Medium coat. Never have to pint it again. Else instead of Clear POR epoxy paint you can use POR colored Epoxy paint or for a rubbery look use POR POR 2k urethane paint. Done
Late comment! I really really wanna repair my Mazda 6 GH, literally the whole car needs repainting, but one question i need answered is how big should a compressor be for such a job? My two biggest fears when painting is runaway paint and a compressor that auddently needs to recharge while you use the paint gun.

Hey Brian, I am painting own GMC door handles that come primed. Do I need to use sealer and is there sealer and paint that I can use in a spray can, just a small job to break out a gun. Is SEM any good.
Do you think that you could accomplish the same surface prep with a really fine glass bean sand blaster? I want to paint a piece of plastic that has a crap ton of texture, nooks and crannies. I'm sure that trying to get in there with a scotch bright pad would be next to impossible.

I want to paint a bumper with spray cans. Do you know if theres a 2K primer aerosol that is flexible enough for bumpers? I know SEM has a flexible bumper primer aerosol but its only 1K. I figure it's best to stay all 2K.

You ever tried the Master Pro 44 Series high performance hvlp spray gun saw it on Amazon today. If I end up painting a vehicle again in future I wouldn't use my old spray gun had that 29.99 spray gun from Harbor Freight but the paint I used didn't seem like high grade paint I used when I used it I rather use single stage in the future. I know about the Black Widow HTE spray gun but this spray gun on Amazon is cheaper and the one for 189.96 comes with more fluid tips you can use but I don't know how good it is compared to a Black Widow though. It probably better than the one I got now though.
What good is adhesion promotor when we still have to scuff up the plastic? Any GOOD TRUE adhesion promotor can do what it is supposed to do - adhere the primer to the plastic? Or even better, any of them has primer + filler Included so that we are ready for the color coat? I am just a newbie asking stupid questions.
My bumper is looking really faded. 7 year old Subaru but the paint is intact. No cracks in the bumper. Can I just scuff up the bumper and hit it with a few coats of 2k clear? Would that bring back the gloss and protect the paint? Thanks
So I scratched up pretty good my DIY spray can freshly painted urethane front bumper. I originally scuffed it up good and used 3m adhesion promoter. Should I sand down the whole bumper and scratches and start over completely or sand damage areas, apply filler primer and rebasecoat? I'm thinking start from scratch smh. Please help!
Hey Brian!..I have a bad Plastic bumper where the paint is peeling off really cleanly,-well about 90% of it anyway the rest is flaking-and exposing the black plastic under where it looks like the previous painter didn’t even bother with scuffing it...how would I go about removing all the paint to prep it for primer paint etc...??..
Huge question for you I’m restoring my 2004 Ford ranger for my son to use we’re doing a complete repaint. The flex additive you guys are adding to your primer and sealer‘s for the flexible body parts cannot be used on all kinds of paint?I’m using Eastwoods contour polyester primer surfacer they say it can be used on plastic parts which I’m OK with but I just wanna make sure that he can handle the flexing of the bumper. Couldn’t get a hold of anybody that I could tell me if I get out the flex additive to it can you please please help me thanks. Richard
You need to watch my video? First step wash first with soap and hot water to remove contaminates. A bumper breathes, cures polymers. Now proceed. I really like your content, fine job. 45 yrs. had 2 bumpers peal both mine,,,wth.
What if your part is some type of plastic,....but you know not what type of blue paint was used? Your wanting to use enamel,.... but you don't know if they used Lacquer paint.

Reduce your primer. (Add thinner or reducer)

My damaged bumper cover is black. I bought a used silver color bumper cover. Can I spray primer over the silver paint then black after that?

Hey Brian, I am painting own GMC door handles that come primed. Do I need to use sealer and is there sealer and paint that I can use in a spray can, just a small job to break out a gun. Is SEM any good.
Do you think that you could accomplish the same surface prep with a really fine glass bean sand blaster? I want to paint a piece of plastic that has a crap ton of texture, nooks and crannies. I'm sure that trying to get in there with a scotch bright pad would be next to impossible.

I want to paint a bumper with spray cans. Do you know if theres a 2K primer aerosol that is flexible enough for bumpers? I know SEM has a flexible bumper primer aerosol but its only 1K. I figure it's best to stay all 2K.

trims and bumper of my car are made by plastic and done with 2 layer of bumper coater , is it ok to apply clear coat on the top? if so, how long should i wait for paint done before applying clear coat? thanks
A $10 can of bonding agent will let that bumper finish last a lifetime. Nobody uses it. Not even most professional shops.

After you give it a coat of paint and it starts peeling what’s the next step
I just mist spray it twice and you should let it dry 20 minutes

What's the best way to paint a texture plastic bumper?
You ever tried the Master Pro 44 Series high performance hvlp spray gun saw it on Amazon today. If I end up painting a vehicle again in future I wouldn't use my old spray gun had that 29.99 spray gun from Harbor Freight but the paint I used didn't seem like high grade paint I used when I used it I rather use single stage in the future. I know about the Black Widow HTE spray gun but this spray gun on Amazon is cheaper and the one for 189.96 comes with more fluid tips you can use but I don't know how good it is compared to a Black Widow though. It probably better than the one I got now though.
What good is adhesion promotor when we still have to scuff up the plastic? Any GOOD TRUE adhesion promotor can do what it is supposed to do - adhere the primer to the plastic? Or even better, any of them has primer + filler Included so that we are ready for the color coat? I am just a newbie asking stupid questions.
My bumper is looking really faded. 7 year old Subaru but the paint is intact. No cracks in the bumper.
Can I just scuff up the bumper and hit it with a few coats of 2k clear? Would that bring back the gloss and protect the paint? Thanks
So I scratched up pretty good my DIY spray can freshly painted urethane front bumper. I originally scuffed it up good and used 3m adhesion promoter. Should I sand down the whole bumper and scratches and start over completely or sand damage areas, apply filler primer and rebasecoat? I'm thinking start from scratch smh. Please help!

Hey Brian!..I have a bad Plastic bumper where the paint is peeling off really cleanly,-well about 90% of it anyway the rest is flaking-and exposing the black plastic under where it looks like the previous painter didn’t even bother with scuffing it...how would I go about removing all the paint to prep it for primer paint etc...??..
Huge question for you I’m restoring my 2004 Ford ranger for my son to use we’re doing a complete repaint. The flex additive you guys are adding to your primer and sealer‘s for the flexible body parts cannot be used on all kinds of paint?I’m using Eastwoods contour polyester primer surfacer they say it can be used on plastic parts which I’m OK with but I just wanna make sure that he can handle the flexing of the bumper. Couldn’t get a hold of anybody that I could tell me if I get out the flex additive to it can you please please help me thanks. Richard
You need to watch my video? First step wash first with soap and hot water to remove contaminates. A bumper breathes, cures polymers. Now proceed. I really like your content, fine job. 45 yrs. had 2 bumpers peal both mine,,,wth.
What if your part is some type of plastic,....but you know not what type of blue paint was used?
Your wanting to use enamel,.... but you don't know if they used Lacquer paint.
