"How do you like them apples?"
Fun Fact: The lines in the scene when Sean talks about his late wife's farting antics were ad-libbed by Robin Williams. That is why Matt Damon was laughing so hard. If you watch the scene carefully, you can notice the camera shaking a bit, possibly due to the cameraman laughing as well.
MIT Connection Fact: Matt Damon, a former Harvard student, originally intended to make the title character a physics prodigy. He discussed his idea with Sheldon L. Glashow, a Nobel laureate in physics and, at the time, a Harvard professor. Glashow told him that the premise did not ring true to him: he suggested that the main character be a math prodigy instead. He referred Damon to his brother-in-law, Daniel Kleitman, a professor of mathematics at MIT, who provided advice on the story. Glashow and Kleitman are thanked in the credits.
Dream Realized Fact: The very first day of the shooting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck started crying out of happiness, because it was a scene between Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgård, accomplished actors, doing Damon's and Affleck's scene verbatim, and they had waited so long (five years) for this to happen.

People have always said the hardest thing about working with Robin Williams is trying not to laugh. When they made Aladdin, the actors and actresses would have to get out of the booths immediately to laugh so that it wouldn't mess up the recording. Robin ad libbed so many of his lines that they actually have two hours of additional recordings when he'd try to find the right characters for Genie to impersonate.
When Steven Spielberg made Schindler's List, he would be so depressed filming the movie that he would call Robin Williams after each shoot to cheer him up with some comedy.

Robin Williams and this movie changed my life. With "Mork and Mindy", which I watched as a young kid, he was the first person I ever identified as being something called an actor playing something called a character. And I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life. When I went to my first therapist, I told him about this movie, and the very next session, he had watched it and hit me with the "it's not your fault" speech. In 2011, in my first trip to New York, I met Robin. He must have had about 200 people around him, but he took the time to properly chat to everyone, including me. I got to thank him for everything he had meant to me, which he weirdly seemed very touched to hear, and we took a selfie and had a hug. When he died, I was holed up on my bed crying for three days. It took me 5 years to watch any of his work again. Not too long ago, I had an important meeting with some influential casting directors, and, after spending hours trying to decide what monologue to do and putting it aside, I faced my fears and did the speech from the park bench. The meeting could not have gone better. The following year, I visited Boston, and the only place I knew I needed to go was that bench. I found it, sat down, and something really special came over me. My Dad took a really closeup photo of me, looking straight forward, lost in thought, and it's probably my favourite photo of myself. I'm so glad you've discovered this masterpiece. Another Robin great is "What Dreams May Come".

SO glad you picked up on the music! That song in particular, and many others, were written by Elliott Smith (the director was a fan), and he got an Oscar nomination for it. A very shy, troubled musical genius, the new found fame was quite uncomfortable for him, contributing to his depression & drug addiction. He killed himself a few years after this movie came out, but he released a couple of complete albums, and a compilation album of half finished songs in between. Definitely check him out.

IMO Chuckie is one of the great cinematic best friends. He loves Will unconditionally, always has his back, is proud of his gifts rather than jealous, and deeply wants the best for him, even if it means some amount of personal sadness for himself. Not an ounce of selfishness to be found. As Sean notes, Chuckie is family.

When Robin passed away the bench in Boston Public Garden became a huge memorial. It's still a popular place for photos. I liked how you picked up on Robin's throat grab as a means of respect. South Boston (Southie) in the 70's and 80's was a tough predominantly Irish section of Boston where shit was never taken.

  • @EricAKATheBelgianGuy
    @EricAKATheBelgianGuy ปีที่แล้ว +1

I forget where I heard it, but the movie shows an interesting contrast: the neighborhood called South Boston (or "Southie" for short) is known for two things - being very blue-collar, and a strong link to Irish Catholicism. Now, Harvard and MIT of course are among the most prestigious universities in the world, and Harvard in particular has a strong Protestant linkage, notably because its reported namesake John Harvard was a Puritan clergyman.
Will's intellect would cause him to stand out in Southie. That's why the "genius from Southie" line from Sean is so unexpected.

Afterwards I immediately hit the subscribe button and i cannot wait to see more of your reactions! Keep up the great work!

Hey Kev! Glad you did this one. For me personally and I know for a lot of guys our age, this is one of those movies that opens the door to watching more emotionally charged stories! If you like this blend of emotion and intelligence, I recommend a movie called Gifted (Chris Evans, 2017). It is a really great story, especially for a newer movie.

I remember watching this as a kid and was just blown away. It really inspired me to get better in school through some really messed up times. The older I get, watching it hits me harder every time. These days I can't even get through it without tearing up or outright weeping. Lovely reaction as always Kev. I'm glad you're feeling better; much love to you and the family. Sofa and Chill 4 life.

I LOVED your reaction.....it is the best I've seen. You were genuinely invested, deeply understood each character, appreciated the dialogue, acting and how each scene could stand on its own. And didn't hold your emotions back. This movie will stand the test of time. I think it'd be an amazing teaching tool obviously for actors, but also for those teaching dichotomy within social groups, cultural traditions, educational levels, age, economic positions, etc. In a perfect world I hope those teachings would help us gain a better understanding that at our core, we want and need the same things. I've subscribed and am off to watch another of yours. Cheers.

@@SofaandChill something interesting to mention is that I think it was psychiatrists/psychologists that have said this is the movie best show what it's like. I don't know if it's true, but as movies goes.. they are usually not very accurate, so maybe it's a low bar 🙂

The brilliance of the writing is just practically beyond anything else in modern cinema. The dialogue, and the way it is performed is insanely good, and then below that the way the whole story is woven together makes it hard to believe it was written by these two young guys. The way the discussions keep coming back to his wife... Partially because that type of fidelity and loss is so closely tied to Will's own issues. But Sean also keeps going back to it, because Will wasn't the only one who needed some therapy. It's through the act of helping Will that Sean is able to come to terms with his own pain. Narrative depth that is essentially unheard of these days.

Easily on my list for best movies of all time and knowing Robin, finally receives his long over due Oscar, is the cherry on top!
If you liked this, you should also check out Finding Forrester, it's director Gus Van Sant's follow up to this movie, it also happens to be Sean Connery's 2nd to last performance, before going on to make The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the movie that killed his desire to act again!

Excellent reaction! I would recommend Swingers, with John Favreau (he also wrote it) I haven’t seen anyone react to it and it was such a simple low budget movie that became quite influential in the 90’s. It’s very good and funny and yet reactors seem to have never known of it. Thank you.

Extraordinary how these two “kids” wrote the screenplay. A few tidbits....They won the Oscar for the screenplay. Also, Matt Damon & Minnie Driver fell in love making the film. So, their chemistry was genuine.
As per your request, I highly recommend One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest...another extraordinary film 🔥

I can't think of a comparable movie right now. Maybe 'Patch Adams' if you want more Robin Williams doing a serious but funnier role. Not quite as good as this but it gets you in the feels... and it's loosely based off a true story.
