      Hey! Congratulations! Which Kenpo do you train in? Traditional Parker? Tracy? Kenpo 5.0? AKKI?
      Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it and hope the channel continues to provide content you like :)

      The school I attend is more of Tracy style school. However, we also have a instructor and a student that trained years ago who were trained in Traditional Parker so we get to experience both. Our head instructor has also been training in BJJ for a few years and will sometimes show us some that. I noticed in your black belt testing video your uniforms and a lot of what you said was very much luck our school. Been a subscriber ever since.

    Thanks for those video. I learn a lot. I'm a black belt of Shōrin-ryū style but I'm switching to Kenpo. I'm not from US but Canada. So we are under Nick Cerio which now I know he was a student of Ed Parker. I will continue to watch your video, continue to do so. Thanks

    Interesting and informative. Thank you! Because I am traditionally trained, these things have significance to me. I have the original Tracy's patch on my dress gi. It is yellow and has a green and red dragon over a black "T" with Tracy's in red on the bottom. My instructor used to joke that it looked like a dollar sign $ lol We had a good time, but don't misunderstand, when it came to practicing the art, we were very serious, and our studio dominated local competitions.

    Wow I am impressed and also intrigued by the various Kenpo Karate patches, as well as their historical and philosophical meanings. Thank you for going into articulate, concise, clear and comprehensible, explanation of what each aspect of the various Kenpo Karate crests mean, represent and symbolise!
    I truly enjoyed the thorough detailed chronology, of Kenpo Karate, over the three detailed videos, that you have showcased, here on your TH-cam channel Sensei Dan!
    I am looking forward to your next martial arts coverage, of which no doubt I am certain will be, of the utmost excellence and educational. I hope your week has been going well thus far. Wishing you the very best as usual. From Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺, Osu! 👍 ☺ ✌

    Nice job yet again sir. Im a Second-Degree Black belt in American Kenpo under Grandmaster Dennis Tosten; not sure if your familiar but his was the 1st Kenpo school in Philadelphia going back to 1967 which later became know as Amerikick Kenpo Karate. He was pronoted to incredibly high rank of 7th degree and trained and traveled with SGM Parker until his passing and also attended the funeral. He also studied under the Tracys and Joe Palanzo. I would love to share our patch with you but unfortunately we cannot upload pictures in the comnent section of TH-cam. Only Facebook. Thanjs again for anotger great video.

    I am no AKK practitionner, but I must say it is a very beautiful and meaningful crest with much research behind it. Students of the art must be proud to wear it (if embracing this philsophy and those technics of course).

    Fantastic video... again! This was very informative about the background and reasoning for the crest. While I like the comment about kenpo being in the heart, I think it lends itself to too many people claiming cultish garbage. Personally I think anything that you are passionate about will be in your heart. While this information will not make me a better fighter, it does give me more insight into the intentions and thought processes of the creator of it.

  • @n8trsho

    Nice video. The crest was most widely seen by those outside of the EPAK world when Elvis started adorning his guitars with it. Back in the day, these were water-transfer decals (think model cars and airplanes).

    Awesome video! In that bygone era known as "The 1980s", I studied Kenpo for almost two years, achieving the rank of Advanced Purple Belt. This video brought back so many memories: meeting Ed Parker and Michael Pick, tournaments, hours in the dojo, sparring classes, etc. Thirty-one years later, I still have my original Kenpo Gi, wonderfully faded with the original crest and associated patches.
    Oddly enough, not being allowed to wear it amidst the ensuing politics following Mr. Parker's passing was one of the primary reasons I held off on returning to Kenpo. These extremely well-made videos of yours has me considering to do so one day and for that I thank you.
    Question: Where can I find the Tiger & Dragon artwork displayed at 1:40? I loved the detail in it. Thanks again!

    Shorinji Kempo used to use the Buddhist manji, which has two variations. The one they used was the omote manji, which represents love and compassion. The inverted one is known as the ura manji, which represents intelligence and power, and was also the one which the German Nazis "borrowed" during WWII. It wasn't until 2005 that the world organization finally changed it to the so'en, or paired circles. While many Japanese still have hard feelings about the symbol being changed, one nice thing about the updated symbol is that it represents both sides of the manji.

    Hello my name is JP Scarano and I am a 5th dan in Kenpo as well as you are. I finished watching all 3 videos you made and you opened many eyes to what has happened to Kenpo since Mr. PARKER died. I feel there is a few more things you forgot to mention like being able to add other ranks from other systems to Kenpo and not learn the next ranks at all. Also being able to get ranks after only a few years like it was nothing.

    • @ArtofOneDojo
      @ArtofOneDojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good point but that will depend on the school. In the ones I trained in, if someone from another art came in with a belt, they were allowed to keep it but they were frozen at that level until they caught up to the same rank in Kenpo. Ranking is way too loose in Kenpo, some schools follow fair protocol, others just give rank away. The videos dance a line on the politics as they do and I didn't want to go too far down roads like that. I hope you liked the series! :)

It is smack dab in the middle, beneath the sternum. It's why CPR compressions are performed there. A small matter to be sure. Still a fun presentation! It got my thumb up!

    As a symboligist, I disagree with the meaning of the dragon and the tiger. The dragon represents darkness, and the tiger represents light. The goal is to take you away from light into the darkness… to trap you not just physically, but also spiritually. Stay as a tiger, you’ll remain in the light spiritually and physically. You can not be controled, you are free.

      This is not correct. Animals can take on many different meanings depending on context. In the context of Kenpo, the tiger is Earthly strength and the dragon is Wisdom. Light and darkness have no bearing in this particular use.

      I've had a lot of people ask me why I left out multiple organizations, and the truth is I couldn't name them all but I was focusing on the ones that are still trying to carry on what they felt was the continuation of Ed Parker's system.
      I've met Steve Muhammad and he's an incredible martial artist and honestly I was hoping to devote a whole episode to the BKF system. I think he's doing amazing work.

    Hey bro-would you do a video on Kajukenbo?

    • @ArtofOneDojo
      @ArtofOneDojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would definitely consider it. We're getting a ton of requests for arts, which means people seem to be liking this type of episode. We are currently working on a Kyokushin mini series like this one, and also in the early stages of a Wing Chun episode, so we're trying to explore a bunch of different arts. Kajukenbo is definitely on the list of considerations :)

    Any reason why BKF never made Kenpo Karate emblems?

    • @ArtofOneDojo
      @ArtofOneDojo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you clarify the question a little? They made their own BKF patch and emblem, that is there Kenpo emblem. Or do you mean the a different version of the Crest?

    Uh...Dick Tercell anyone? Really appreciate the Kenpo histories, found out I'm a 24 series even though my teacher seems to have made the switch as early as 1979. But how can you talk about the Kenpo patch but not mention the student who designed it.
