      I once had an old keyboard that was really dirty and thought that, because it was alcohol based, using brake clean on it would work.
      It did a terrific job of cleaning the keyboard of all the accumulated dirt and stains but the problem was that afterwards the keys were all melted together and the lettering smeared enough so that it looked like something from a horror movie so it didn't really work very well as a keyboard but it WAS a fantastic modern art piece.

    I keep my 4 year-old laptop fairly clean using similar methods to those Brian recommends. Some laptops come with a very thin keyboard cover when new, I've kept that on my device, and it does offer some extra protection from biscuit crumbs and the like....) I also removed my laptop's battery from new and just add it to the device when travelling - so after 4 years of ownership my laptop's battery still has enough power so that the device can work without mains electricity for a genuine 8 hour working day.

    Glad you recognize pure alcohol, not rubbing alcohol. It was imperative when I was doing fiber optic splicing (fusion). Most cleaners contain contaminants, even the ones sold as computer cleaners. Hint: use Swiffer dusters for daily once over mntnc. Another good one Brian - Thank you

    Another common sense video Brian and why I always look forward to my daily treat of you posting video's which covers everything from the simple stuff to the really technical stuff😄 One thing I did think of was I found it good good to clean the main plastic surfaces with one of those automotive vinyl cleaners too because it really does bring out the nice original state colour and finish but again using it sparingly.

    Great method for cleaning any PC or laptop! Personally, when I clean my stuff, I use non alcoholic wipes to clean surfaces and touch screens, and some handy dandy screen cleaner for monitors and TV'S. Microfiber cloths are great for delicate screens and surfaces.

  • @flicka25
    @flicka25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I use an almost dry microfibre cloth...then I buff off with a dry microfibre cloth...screen keyboard and all.....then again the laptops are mine and I keep them in pristine condition. I use a brush to clean the ports, vents and in between the keys. It's one of those hair dye brushes, NOT USED mind...I bought it specifically for this kind of cleaning job. BTW it helps if you clean the screnn in straight lines not circular....leaves no smear at all. Mac Books are finicky...the screens have this coating and better not use anything except a damp microfibre cloth.

    I like to use a new unused Paint Brush and my hoover to clean the keyboard, ports from any dust or dirt ( mostly dust), I find it best to do the cleaning outside (providing the weather is fine) that way you don't move the dust from one spot to another if the hoover doesn't catch it. I would definitely remove the keycaps and clean under them. That is easily the dirtiest place on any used computer - especially if the owner had a babit of eating near it.
    Most keycaps can be removed with the right method and appropriate tool, but this is something you should probably research and watch a few videos of before trying - so you dont end up breaking anything. Cheaper plastic laptop keys arent always super sturdy.

      Gotta be *REALLY* careful with "furniture polish" as some of them contain citrus oils which can actually dissolve/eat into the plastic, especially if the laptop has a "soft coated" or rubberized plastic casing. Alcohol is fine to clean with but if you truly want to rejuvenate the plastic surface, I can recommend that you use some Silicone Oil or a protectant such as "303 Aerospace Protectant". Both of these are "neutral" and will not harm the plastic while protecting it.
