I am a 72 year old Australian who has lived in Thailand for 13 years. One Thai custom or common behaviour that foreigners could well adopt in their countries is refraining from road rage, or even mild displays of anger after road accidents. It is an admirable and helpful piece of self control. Displays of anger are vulgar and self defeating.

Definitely more on Thai culture is a good idea. You have done a lot on how English culture looks to a foreigner but more about Thailand would be interesting.

What an interesting and mature video…I think you are keeping the best of your culture while adapting and growing as a person…every culture has aspects that are still followed because of tradition, and because ‘it’s always been this way’ regardless of the merits. Making fun of people’s appearances is an interesting one. I say interesting because my Asian friends have told me that in Asian culture, the parents can be quite blunt and critical of their children, especially about things like weight and skin tone. I live in the United States and a few years ago, I had a treatment at a spa and afterwords the masseuse, who was from Thailand, spoke to me… she had brown skin, and she told me that one of the reasons she emigrated, and why she liked the United States, is that she wasn’t judged as much by her skin color in the U.S. I was taken aback because, as you probably know, the United States has quite a history itself, but it was eye-opening for me. Since then I have learned much more about colorization and prejudice based on skin tones within some cultures. Awful…
I’m watching this video two years after you made it, but you asked for suggestions. One thing I would be interested in hearing is more about gender roles and differences in Thailand compared to the west…
PS i’m flying to Thailand next week, spending a week, before moving onto Cambodia and Angkor Wat, and then on to Laos ✈️ 🧳

When I was 21 I stayed in Bangkok (Bang Khun Thian province). Whilst not very overweight by Western standards compared to Thai standards I guess I was. My nickname in Thai was "fat pig"! Like you say it's not because Thai people like to be insulting , they called me this in a nice, friendly way and it's meant to be fun. I really miss Thailand and the Thai people.

I've English, but have lived in China for the last 6 years - and in China, commenting on changes in weight, or looks in general is also common practice - my Chinese friends will say i need feeding up, take me drinking and then, a month later. will say i'm getting fat LoL
Whilst dowries as such aren't required so much in China, it is kind of expected that a male marriage prospect should have an apartment, car and a job/career with good prospects - or be on his way to having such - even as just a boyfriend.
BTW - as an English teacher - always interested to hear about how you acquired your English proficiency - tips and tricks etc, which i can use in my future lessons
    Thanks Poppy
Edit: Also should not type on my phone when tipsy LoL
    Spellings corrected now though

I have been to Singapore a few times. What I find interesting is the source or derivation of what might appear to be natural cultural traditions. Public displays of anger or rowdy behaviour is not something accepted by the authorities in Singapore. People sit relatively quietly with a beer, and yet a comment by Leopold Bourne highlights similarities to Thailand.

My girlfriend is Thai and has lived here for many years. Like you she does not refer to anyone's appearance negatively. I am in agreement with not wearing shoes indoors as it does traffic dirt and frankly I just prefer to be barefoot anyway. She still prays every night and tends to try to make sure I eat and mothers me a bit but plenty of non Thai women do that too. All in all like any culture I think there are far more positive aspects. I have noticed the perception about money and Westerners but even if I try to help her out she tells me off haha. An all round lovely soul - just like yourself Poppy.
