Leonard, thank you very much for your comments. You have seen a lot of the dark side of life for which I am sorry. I hope this story brings you encouragement that life can get better. Best wished to you, Wayne Whitley
Respect for Dad and Son! Dad you did a great job preparing and entrusting so much to your son. He will never forget this step into becoming a man. And he will always treasure you for it.
It's already been said a dozen times below, but I'm saying it again, what a great story, at some point we all figure out in life that the things that bring the most joy and meaning to our lives is family(blood & non-blood) and life experiences. Your son now has an incredible experience that he will fondly reflect on for the rest of his life, it's a priceless gift. This is the type of activity that takes a boy and starts building a healthy foundation for him to become a man. God bless you and your family.
Yes, I think the fule capacity limitation should be increased but I think weight is good how it is, remember Canada also has some of the same restrictions
My father was a mechanic and my joy as a young guy was working on cars with him...Later in life, he and I got interested in Ham Radio and we had a wonderful journey together.
Steve, thank you for your comment. My siblings and I were blessed to have had a "role model" father who was an inspiration to all of his children. Your father and William Scott are a lot like my Dad. Best Regards, Wayne Whitley

I started flying as well at 14. But that was in 1967! Good for this young man, mature focused and driven. Good for Dad to provide the proper guidance and instruction. Great video!
Neilyeag, Thank you for your comment. I agree with you, Henry is very focused and Dad did all the right things to inspire that focus. I am glad you liked this video, keep tuned for more. Wayne Whitley
Awesome job to Henry and you dad. I did a cross county with my dad in 1976 in a Cessna 172. Hearing you talk about how is confidence and professionalism grew in the week reminded me how that trip went for me. We flew from Atlantic City to Saint Louis over 3 days. Never forget it. RIP dad.
Chris, thank you for your comment and for sharing your experience you had with your Dad. Henry and his Dad, William, will surely remember this milestone in Henry's life. I certainly remember, with gratitude, the time my Dad shared with me. Best Regards, Wayne Whitley

That’s an awesome story and great dad. I live and work in the warrenton Va area and see ultra lights and powered paragliders frequently so iv probably seen him in the air. Cool stuff. Congrats on the Oshkosh flight
So much to like about this story. Thank you Wayne. As a retired CFII my couple of times into OSH from Canada are now cherished memories. What a fantastic start for this young man to have a dad so dedicated to his son's flying education. A joy to remember for the rest of his life. The 'boy' takes off and the 'man' lands. Rather nice.
Warren, thank you for your thoughtful comment. I couldn't agree more that Henry takes off as a "boy" and lands as a "Man" thanks to his dad. Regards, Wayne Whitley
Great lesson; “Safety is No accident”. It took months, even years of training and preparation, to achieve this remarkable cross country trip with no bad surprises. Congratulations for educating and inspiring all of us!
Awesome video !!! Henry is so lucky to have a family that supports his passion, but then dad flies also which is a big plus and got Henry "hooked" at a very early age. It's nothing but skyward from here on out and I would think Henry may one day have his ATP and fly the Big iron cross country. Thanks dad for all your support, you will never have any discipline problems from Henry. This guy is Focused in the right direction. Hope to see more of these great videos and see how Henry is doing.
Thank you Richard for your very thoughtful comments. Henry and William are an inspiration to all who love flying. Glad you enjoyed the video, hope to have more in the future. Best Regards, Wayne Whitley
The young man seems to be a natural in the cockpit with all the flying exposure he has had over the years. As long as he flies the aircraft not the other way around, he'll be fine. I'm glad to see these young ones that are interested in aviation now a days, with the cost being out of reach for the majority of people. I learned to fly in the early 60s, when it was fairly cheap, and was lucky enough to get to fly a variety of airplanes. I believe the high cost, drove the ultralight market, and it looks like it's doing well. I know now, I should have built an ultralight, when the prices went sky high and drove most of the average guys out of the skies. At least I got to fly for about twenty years, and had a Boeing Stearman 19 of those years, and with my own 1948 Beech Bonanza, and a few years with a Republic Sea Bee! Sure miss the flying!
tinlizzie37, thank you for your comment. You had some wonderful aircraft to fly for your twenty years of flying. My brother also learned to fly in the early 60's and a few years ago built his own Just Aircraft Highlander light Sport Aircraft. He loves his plane and flies it all over the country. Perhaps you can continue your flying in a Light Sport aircraft. Best Regards, Wayne Whitley
@@cindyd4333 Sadly I can sum it up in one word .. liability. When a small airplane crashes, the airplane manufacturer gets sued, the engine manufacturer gets sued, the mechanic gets sued and the list goes on. The cost of liability insurance can literally double the cost of an airplane. The introduction of LSA and Ultralight aircraft have revitalized the industry.
What a great story! Fabulous dad, great kid- sweet ultralight too! So 'risky' yet well managed by both. Exceeds aircraft parameters by a large margin, but- I'm sure that Dennis Carley is proud of the achievement as well! Last year was Peter Stripol's 'foamy basement flier, this year an Aerolite 103 from VA to KOSH- genuinely impressive successes! I LOVE Oshkosh!
David, thank you for your comments. I could not agree more that Dad, Son and aircraft were a match for this wonderful accomplishment. Oshkosh brings out the best. Wayne Whitley

This is the second video I have seen on this father and son duo. Very impressive effort. What's annoying is how much dad loves to jam. It'd be nice to hear the boy speak for himself on the skill and effort he put in himself. Listening to dad makes it seem like it was more dad's dream than junior's
Great story, a very lucky family to be that close and share a passion. great video, editing and interview! a documentary is only as good as the reporter, and this was fantastic!
Thank you Roger for your comment, happy you enjoyed it. Professional pilots have to start somewhere, hopefully Henry will be one of them. Wayne Whitley
I dream of the day when I can do this with my own kids. They are 3 & 6 right now and in the next few years, I hope to be able to start building a part 103 (probably an Aerolite 103). How satisfying would it be to build a couple 103s with your kids and fly in formation?
Thank you for doing this video. Thank you William and Henry for showing that with proper training and preparation, just what is possible in an ultralight. Recently I've developed a major attraction to some of the bush ultralights. With today's technology the capabilities of these aircraft have greatly increased. My goal is over the next two years is to gain flight experience and skills to be able to do hops similar and show just what these inexpensive aircraft can do - and post those experiences on my TH-cam channel. Now that'll be the way to retire!
Where in Virginia can I find ultralight training. As it seems to be taboo in this part of the country. Sport pilot training is available if I want to drive for 2 hours, ridiculous.

Mom (my wife Angela) has been very supportive and has never expressed anything but confidence is us. Without her belief in us it wouldn't have been possible.
William Scott , when I saw how calm he was during cruising and landing, specifically how calmly adjusting the wing’s angle of attack (alpha) during his very soft landings, I said to myself, by age 30 Henry is a Captain in a 787 Dreamliner or Airbus 380. All the credit goes to the courageous and supportive parents. 👍😜❤️ Note : As a CFI, could you please advise me of a place where I could get training prior to purchasing one ? I am ironically 63, and need a hobby for retirement. 😳🤔🤪😎🥰
great info. i am planning a fall trip on rt 66. starting from california and ending in st. louis, where i will detour back to florida. the planning is the hardest part, but my experimental aerolite has the wingbug and foreflight enhanced programs, radio, elt, trim package, and nav lights. 7 gal tank powered by hirth 2702. putting in an ads-b before i leave. i love this video and a great job by this young man. lets hope this 68yr old can do the same.
Nathaniel, thank you for your comment, I am happy you enjoyed this video. Henry and his dad, William teamed up to accomplish a truly memorable trip and an inspiration to us all. Your plan to follow Rt 66 from CA to St. Louis sounds great. You certainly have done your home work selecting the safety, communications and navigation accessories to go along with a fine ultralight aircraft. I wish you the best on your adventure. I believe that at 68yr young, you will do great. My brother flew his Just Aircraft Highlander from Florida to Alaska and back a few years ago and he was just 73yr young! Regards, Wayne Whitley
I am in awe of this young man and excited about what he will be doing in the future. I could not be in better hands as dennis carley is just 2 hangers down from me and a wealth of information xcountry flying in the aerolite. your videos are fantastic and if mine are half as good, I will have something to show on youtube. awhile back bill invited me to stop by his field and I look forward to that as soon as the rainy season stops. @@WhitleyVideos

@@WhitleyVideos Thank You Wayne. That was a wonderful video about Henry and William. I enjoyed every minute of the video. One of my late ham radio friends was a 1/4 owner of a Cherokee 140B. Each owner paid $38.00 per hour that pilot operated the plane to cover fuel and maintenance. and they split hanger cost. I would pay the $38 when he took me flying which enabled him to fly as much as he wanted. It was a blast. We'd fly to Sikeston, Mo. To eat at Lamberts, popular among pilots. We flew to Reelsfoot Lake for catfish or Cincinnati to watch the Reds. Often we flew places just to fly. We'd leave in the early afternoon and often return well after dark. It was the best of times. One day he called and said they found lung cancer and he was gone 2 weeks later. That was the last time I got to fly in a small plane. I retired last year and my youngest son is getting married in 3 weeks. I hope that since the nest will finally be empty, my wife will agree to me getting licensed. The mission of raising 6 kids is finally over and was a complete success.
Daniel, you have memories that will last a lifetime. My brothers and I are ham radio operators and have lifelong friends that are (were) hams. Congratulations on completing your successful mission of raising 6 kids! Best of luck with your new mission of becoming a pilot. Thank you again for watching my videos and supporting my hobby of movie making. Best Regards, Wayne Whitley

Very cool! I’ve wondered about the possibility and practicality of 103 ultralight travel. Whenever I look it up on TH-cam I would get luggage videos. Amazing that this trip was done by some this young.
Bravo. Un bel exemple de respect pere/fils. Et un projet courageux pour la famille qui a du retenir son souffle pendant cet Odyssée. Regards from France.
Congratulations Henry your story reminded me of when I started flying. Short story I started in the summer of 1986 I think I was 11 but my mom would take me to the airport to watch airplanes. Then we stumbled over the (CAP) CIVIL AIR PATROL cadets program. We saw them marching in uniform so my mom stopped and asked for information. When I turned 12, I was able to join CAP. I fly a 103 and I just spent $18k on a Blackhawk LowBoy3 PPG and in the process of starting a business called SimpleAir. So Henry don't stop flying and with your dad's help excel to excellence, and I hope one day I get a Henry to fly for my business. With GOD SPEED.
Lets see .. you towed a trailer ......he flew.... NOW Oshkosh is over , did he fly back or did you ride back together ? If I had a support system like that for a long cross country I'd have a ball for sure. He will remember this venture forever ! GREAT JOB !

Wonderful inspiring story and video! I think I was about 14 when I got my first ride in my uncle's Cessna 150 and never looked back. My retirement is next year and my retirement present to myself will be an Aerolite 103 kit. Still need to figure out how to fly to Oshkosh from Texas without ground support.

When I was 14 ( not a short time ago) my 'most difficult moments' were trying to get up at 5:30 in the morning for my newspaper delivery job; this 14 year old's most difficult moments were 'flying and navigating through turbulent mountain airspace in an Aerolite'. Yet again I might need to re-evaluate what the word 'difficult' means.
Tinymaths, thank you for your comment. I also had a paper route when I was 14 (and a long time ago). I was not thinking about flying cross country until much later in life. Henry is an inspiration to us all. Regards, Wayne Whitley

Great story and accomplishment! .....and it has bee too long without a WhitleyVideo posting
Bobby, glad you enjoyed the story. Look fro more from Oshkosh to come. Wayne
Wow! What an incredible adventure! Great job to this 'young man'!
Mark, thank you for your comment. Thank you for watching. Stay tuned fro more. Wayne Whitley
great info. i am planning a fall trip on rt 66. starting from california and ending in st. louis, where i will detour back to florida. the planning is the hardest part, but my experimental aerolite has the wingbug and foreflight enhanced programs, radio, elt, trim package, and nav lights.
I hanger at Mt. Vernon, MO 2MO. I have 91 ethanol free fuel if you want. MO9, Kingsley Field, 9 miles north, Hanger Kafe has great food. I fly a T-Bird II. Email kenhurley50@gmail.com. I can even meet you in Oklahoma and fly with you to St. Louis.
I loved this video, wish I could have done that.... AT AGE 14!!! Such things build character big time...especially with regards to patience and focus
Rungy, Thank you for your comment and for watching, I am happy you enjoyed the video. Wayne Whitley
What is price for the basic model
Fantastic journey for a 14 year old. When I was 14, I had a Yamaha 175 Enduro, and I seldom left the ground intentionally.
Daniel, thank you for your comment. This was a great experience for all involved. Regards, Wayne Whitley
LI, FU, RAN, Thank you for your comment. I certainly agree with you. This was a wonderful experience for a very mature young man, and a gift from his Father and family. Regards, Wayne Whitley
i wish i had the money to get one
Very cool! I’ve wondered about the possibility and practicality of 103 ultralight travel. Whenever I look it up on TH-cam I would get luggage videos. Amazing that this trip was done by some this young.
Michael, thank you for your comment. Inspiring story and a fine young man. Thank you for watching. Wayne Whitley
Coolest dad award goes to you.
Jim, thank you for your comment. I totally agree with you. Regards, Wayne Whitley
Bravo. Un bel exemple de respect pere/fils. Et un projet courageux pour la famille qui a du retenir son souffle pendant cet Odyssée. Regards from France.
Sam Z, Merci pour votre commentaire. Je n'aurais pas pu dire mieux. Bon travail.

This was very inspiring. Thank you.
Taylor, you are welcome and thank you for your comment, Henry is an inspirational young man. Regards, Wayne Whitley
Lord willing, I will be flying an Aerolite 103 in the not too distant future. :)
Good for you Kent, Best wishes, you made a great choice in aircraft. Wayne Whitley
Lets see .. you towed a trailer ......he flew.... NOW Oshkosh is over , did he fly back or did you ride back together ? If I had a support system like that for a long cross country I'd have a ball for sure. He will remember this venture forever ! GREAT JOB !
Robert, thank you for watching and for your comment. The plan was for father, son and daughter to ride back together. They all certainly deserve to. Stay tuned to hear from Dad.
Regards, Wayne Whitley
We drove home... Two days.
A real good Dad of the highest order.

Harpandharley, Thank you for your comment and glad you enjoyed my video. Best of luck in your retirement and enjoy your present. Regards, Wayne Whitley
About three quarters through the trip we were contemplating how to tanker 2 cycle oil....mix on the go.
3:02 omg that's delaware muni in ohio! I always recognize my home airport from the sky.
Cooper, thank you for your comment. You have a great eye, that is Delaware Municipal Airport-Dlz, north of Columbus. Beautiful country, Regards, Wayne Whitley

That was awesome, father and son (kid), having fun.
Oh no. These videos have made me put the Aerolite 103 on my bucket list. Gotta start saving up!
Nice to see a teenager outside accomplishing huge goals, than sitting in a room playing xbox with mountain dew.
Awsome Parenting. This kid is going to continue to blow your mind daddy!!!
I thank you so much 💗
What a GREAT story.
