  • This is a quick and random video I made, apologies for the very poor video quality. This is not a how to do video, more like a quick, rushed explanation where I have a mumble.
This is a job I wanted to get done quickly and wasn’t sure if it was going to work, hence filming Halfway through the Swap.
This turbo was making some loud wizzing noises, as well as not pulling like it should be, most likely due to the worn bearings and damaged fins on the exhaust side.
Volkswagen would of quoted around £1000 to pull the whole unit and replace it.
If you have basic tools like spanners and a socket set you should be able to swap your turbo core too! And save yourself a bunch of money!
Swap the turbo core yourself, they can be purchased for 100-£200. Hopefully this helps someone out there!🙂

Does this work instead of taking everything off , like will the turbo be repaired etc whistle noise ?

Yep worked for me. The turbo core was damaged, lots of play in the bearings. Once I replaced the core, the whistling noise went away and I had good power again.
I think it cost me a total of about £150 including buying some extra tools.
I’ll be honest though, it’s very tight and difficult to do but if you have the time and patience you can save a lot of money doing it this way. Luckily I had multiple cars and bikes at the time so I didn’t mind this car sitting around for a couple of days whilst I fixed it in my spare time.

Can you do this if the turbo completely stops working?

It’s hard to say, the bearings were going on mine. But if it’s completely stopped working there could be more damage. You won’t be able to tell without taking it apart.

I only kept the car another 6 months. But yes it definitely solved my problem, no more screaming turbo noises and back to having decent power again. All I would say is it’s a pain to get to from up top, by it can be done with patience.
