      on the 12 string, it takes at least 3 passes to get everybody set. there is so much tension, little changes on a string pulls the others out. so it is a balancing act until it settles in. then after playing it for a while it gets out of tune. the high octave G string, snaps on tuning, a lot. 9's I changed the string trees, with roller trees. so far so good.
      But the sound is worth it.

    Congratulations on the guitar, Jimmy. I played a real Gibson ES-1275 '60's/early 70's version that belonged to a friend of mine in a band. It was more than a boat anchor and he's still got it. He rarely plays it, but he knows there's no way he could get another one given the current market. Let's just say he got his when the market went soft. It goes soft every now and again on these things, because most people want one until they actually get to play it. Then it's "No thank you!" Lzzy Hale was recently showing her double neck (two 6 strings for some reason) and she can't play it for more than a song either. They're a rather one-trick pony, and even then, only if you've created an original or are covering a guitar that requires one person to cover both guitar parts.
    A year or so ago, I got the opportunity to buy an Epiphone version (including the case) at the price you would have paid for the Firefly. I say would have, because I believe they sent it to you for the demo. Again, the market softens up if you're patient. Problem was 2 fold for me and something you might mention to your listeners. The guitar is not just heavy, but for someone who is not very tall, it can be a pain to play. That's a heck of a reach to the lower neck, so it's much like playing a guitar while holding another guitar and playing over top of it! I took it out, gigged it on Stairway and Hotel CA, but I told the band there was no way I could keep that up, so I bought a replacement and switched guitars mid song.
    I now have a Rickenbacker 12 string and it's several pounds lighter (under 8) and a lot easier to play. Setup? Well, they use two (2) dual action truss rods, so that's a learning experience, but I have a particular set of skills that allow me to do my own work. I don't recommend it to the weak or weary. LOL That said, I can play in and out of songs and don't have to break my back. Shoot, the Rick is almost as light as my Gibson SG! Hotel CA requires a lot of going back and forth, but with the right chorus pedal, you can pull it off well enough for club gigs and no one at a festival is listening closely enough. 😆
    Great video, I look forward to hearing more. Have a good day, Chief!

      Hey there Jim! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. This is the 1st time playing a double neck, and for me anyway, it was surprisingly comfortable playing in from a sitting position. I would feel better with a good set of locking strap pins on it before walking around with it on a strap…😎
      I realize the market goes in/out on guitars…especially high end models. Sometimes it’s all about being in the right place at the right time when looking.
      Truly appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts….I tried to upload this with the “opening” of H.C. but of course the Eagle “Don’s” slapped it with a copyright violation so I just deleted if from the video…😎

      @@JimmyStewart1 Yeah, the Eagles will stop you dead. I don't even bother with their music. They can kill it off themselves by making it unsharable.
      Yeah, sitting with that thing is a lot different from standing. Get the Fender strap locks from Sweetwater. They are compatible with the Schaller's and you won't drop it. You can also use the rubber ones if you don't have that. Be careful, because the end pin is easy, but that one up by the necks can crack things if you're not careful.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I usually stay away from their stuff too, but thought I would try due to the nature of the guitar and it’s use….even 58 seconds of the opening triggered the algorithmic death sentence…😎

    Firstly, Thank You very much for your thorough review, Sir, much appreciation for your time and expertise.
    Secondly, I am considering this guitar but wanted to ask you about neck dive and how severe it may be when standing and performing?
    If severe, can the strap pin be re-positioned elsewhere to offset the neck dive?
    I have never played or even touched a double neck in my life hence my question. (I am a long time player of 3 HEAVY Les Pauls and other guitars so I think I’ll be fine w the overall weight of this guitar but I am worried about severe neck dive to a point that it makes performing difficult to impossible.)
    Thank You again for an excellent review, Sir. 🙏🎸😊

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John…thanks for watching and commenting! There are a number of things you can do to offset “neck dive” while playing a double neck. One thing you will certainly see is that most players have their “necks” sitting at around the 1:00 position to start with. Better access to both necks, along with keeping balance while switching from neck to neck. Using a wide 3-4 inch strap also helps. I would put on a good set of strap locks “Before” using the guitar in a live, standing position. You could also bring your strap “over” the bottom bout of the guitar, helping hold the guitar closer to your body and preventing “forward falling” and better control.
      The guitar weighs in just over 13 lbs, so it is “heavy” but not unmanageable. Hope that helps answer some of your questions…and yes, you could move the top strap pin from the “center mass” position to say the “bottom” horn position, but I don’t think it’s actually necessary (once you replace the stock strap pins) with a sturdy set of locking pins! Thanks so much for stopping in to the channel! 🎸👍

      @JS45678 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JimmyStewart1 Sir, I am sincerely grateful for your kindest and most informative (prompt) response!
      I appreciate the numerous ways that you mentioned that I could easily do to offset the unbalanced weight distribution (neck dive).
      I already use 3-4” wide straps and Schaller strap locks on all of my guitars so I’m in the ballpark already!
      Tilting the guitar up at a 1:00 position would be no issue for me as I also play classical guitar using a similar position albeit sitting down.
      I cannot Thank You enough Mr Stewart for your kindest response; I will most definitely be purchasing this instrument from Guitars Garden in the very near future.

    I absolutely agree, the “cool factor” is off the charts! Besides Jimmy Stewart (NOT the one in Bedford Falls), Jimmy Page and Don Felder, I believe John McLaughlin also played a double neck at various times, didn’t he? It seems like in almost every single case, their use of a double neck was for one or two specific songs, and never in the studio… And I can see why-at 13 lbs, and with one neck being up higher than the other, they are probably uncomfortable and unwieldy to play for extended periods. This one looks INCREDIBLY well made for the price, and with stainless steel ball-end frets to boot… It looks like Firefly is really working to improve things! Really a lot of value there! How’s the tuning stability? For some reason, it seems like most 12 string guitars out there really suffer from poor tuning stability.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey PG! Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, JM was another occasional player as well. And who can forget Rick Nielsen wielding his Hamer 5 neck!! 😎
      EVH also used one…along with Mike Rutherford. This guitar is a home run for FF in the build…really, really nice! Surprisingly comfortable to play from a sitting position, as this was the 1st time I ever played one. Got use to it pretty quickly. Tuning has been quite stable considering how cold the instrument was from its travels and after a small bridge adjustment, it stayed in tune pretty well since. Checked it again today after shooting this yesterday, and it’s still holding well!

    Jimmy, my double-neck arrived today, and it is beautiful, I got the White model. 12.8 pounds, and very nice (except for the strings). The octave "G" snapped when I tried to bring it up to pitch. I've got a couple of sets on order.
    Question about the neck relief, I read somewhere that Firefly guitars had double-action truss rods, is that true? The rod on the 12-string was frozen, but I managed to carefully get it operational. However, I can't get any more than 005" relief on either neck. How about yours?

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the strings on ANY of these guitars really need to be replaced. I always leave them on to do my initial review (if possible) to demo the guitar “right out of the box”! I let mine sit for a day before attempting to tune or adjust as it was really cold during its journey. Yes, FF uses dual action rods. These double necks are new, but I assume they use them as well. I have not adjusted mine…I only adjusted both bridges up to take out the string buzz I was getting on the 1st few frets on both necks. it has settled in well so far!

    Hey Jimmy, I'm thinking about getting the 3-pickup version. Any thoughts on that one? It looks like it is just like yours, but with an additional pickup. I really can't decide which one to get...

    • @JimmyStewart1

      Hi Jimmy…Yeah, the do have the triple pup model in the same color as mine. I prefer a “master vol/tone” configuration, as it’s just simpler. I would be interested in how the 3 pups are wired. Along with dual vol/tone it only has the 2 switches. One has to be switching between necks, but what about the other switch? It has to be between pickups, but what combinations is the question. 3 way switch…5 way switch?? What combos of pickups? Don’t know…
      The other thing to consider is your right hand playing position. I usually strum/pick up high around the neck pup position/neck area. Some like having the space between the neck and bridge pup for that and find the “middle” pickup in the way. Just some things to think about…they are all cool!! Should you decide to grab one, tell them “Jimmy sent ya”! 😎👍

      @@JimmyStewart1 I'm back. First of all, I hope Firefly doesn't get into any legal trouble for calling this model a "Firebird", since Gibson already came out with that. I don't particularly like double neck guitars. They're cumbersome, and heavy. I know people who have back problems because of them. I remember when, a couple of years ago, Gibson actually came out with a limited edition 12 string SG. It almost made me want to take up the 12 string guitar, but as I said, they were a limited edition, and were only around for one summer. I wish they would bring them back. I think it's nice that Firefly is willing to include a case, though. If people want a double neck guitar, thenthey should get one, and since it's Firefly, it'll be good quality, but I'd rather wait for either Gibson, Epiphone, or Firefly to come out with a single neck 12 string SG. They should bring those back. Just my honest opinion.

      Thanks…much appreciated! For a “niche” guitar that will be used on a limited basis for most, doing the math is a no brainer! As I state in the video, the pricing on the Gibson and even the Epiphone are sky high…being able to add a nice double neck to your collection @ $400 with a hard shell case is a bargain! By the way, the IYV version does not ship with a case, which I believe is essential for a double neck.

    Hey Jimmy love your vids, very informative. Quick question a little off today's topic, I know that you have both Grotes semi and full hollow body jazz guitar with the p-90 in the neck position. My question is on the full hollow body guitar is the neck the same nut width and thickness as the semi hollow? I have the grote semi hollow and wanted the full hollow also but to save about forty bucks I got the Redid hollow that looked about the same but the neck is a bit thicker (beffier) than the grote semi hollow. Love the new hollow body except for that lol.

      Actually, it’s not really that bad in the weight department…easily doable for a 3 song set (unextended versions)…😎

      Well, there ya go! You could tune the 6 string to “open” whatever, and the 12 for that lush rhythm…🎸👍

      Hi Dan…thanks for stopping in! All Firefly Guitars are sold in their website at www.guitarsgarden.com
      If you don’t see it listed there, then is currently not in stock and sold out!

      Just double checked the web site and they currently have the “RED” finish double neck 4/6 still in stock, but no 6/12’s currently.

    Yeah, and the mongrels don't make a left handed. I believe that is discrimination!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark…they didn’t make a lot of this right handed version either…with this type of “niche” instrument it would have been tough for a small company like Firefly to produce left-handed versions as they probably be setting on the inventory. It’s unfortunate, but left handed guitars simply don’t sell enough units to make it profitable for a small company. Appreciate your stopping in to the channel and sharing your thoughts. 🎸👍

      Just pointing out that this is a well made, budget option for those who always wanted to add one to the arsenal but couldn’t justify the price for a niche instrument. Thanks for stopping into the channel…🎸👍

    Doublenecks can be fun guitars if someone with brain matter throws out the stereotypes and learns the rules on using it. No, it’s not just for playing “Stairway”. No, it’s not wise to make it your lone guitar for a set. Yes, you might look cool playing it, but if you only use one neck, you’re a phony. And finally, anyone can play one, especially if being seated with it is not a crime in your book. Lose the stereotypes.
