ngl, its rlly annoying how most so called "goth" people arent even goth. people forget that goth is a music based culture and see it as just an asthetc and as a goth myself thats kinda saddening to see ngl. (NICE VIDEO BTW)
Actually no, goth has always been about the aesthetic, music and energy. Simply wearing black, chains, and black make up doesn’t make you goth just like listening to the cure, siouxsie, or joy division doesn’t make you goth either. Goth is a state of being, an energy that not everyone has.
It's wild to me to see Goth fashion become so ubiquitous in modern years, especially around this time of year. I remember in my younger years getting told that "Halloween is over", asked "who died?" and getting called many, many slurs, even while out with a girlfriend who dressed similar to me. I still don't know how to feel about its popularity now...
its not popular now, especially if you are a trad goth, recently I've had kids throw stuff at me, I've had creepy men verbally abuse me and try to assault me because of how I dress. I've stopped wearing it outside for my safety. Goths haven't become popular, the media has just sexualised and commodified goth girls.
same with me but with hawaiian shirts. Less tragic, they used to make fun of me cause i had the best shirts this side of the atlantic, next year everyone was buying them at HnM and Zara, asking me where i bought mines (never told em eheh)
It's the life cycle of any underground culture - it starts out small and countercultural, then more people figure out about it and it loses its original purpose. Any intentionally "unique" scene will ultimately contradict itself given enough time
Underground cultures, and youth cultures in general, serve as little more than means through which young people express their innate emotional turmoil. There is really no collosal purpose behind such cultures, other than sweaty, hormonal teenagers expressing their need to belong.
@@perodudla4451 the thing is the modern homogenised subcultures aren’t expressing themselves, they are just fads and trends. We are in the era were fraternity parties play Talking Heads and the Pixies. The bands that would make you an outcast decades ago.
@@kelechi_77 The need to conform to such trends still proceedes from an acquiescent need for belonging. While such individuals mostly don't identify with any specific element of the culture they adhere to, they still project their own needs on the given cultures.
and so do many poser goths. we call them "aesteticharke" in Serbia, which roughly translates to aesthetic girls. when i say we I mean the true goths and other sub-genres such as punkers and metalheads
No. You can be goth and listen to birds singing and wearing adidas fashion for all I care. Its about the nihilism towards the mainstream media consumption and conventional bland and happyface mentality.
@@Djnekro2302 the subculture was created because of the emergence of a new music genre, pioneered by joy division, bauhaus, siouxsie, etc, and was labeled goth by the media because of the sound of the genre. it is a music based subculture and always been that way since the late 70s
It's sad that people use goth to label everything that has a dark aesthetic. As a goth and within my baby bat years, the one rule to being within the subculture is loving the music. It's something that unites us goths and what we most bond over. The subculture has been around for 40+ years now and people have to understand that the root of that can't be changed. Yes, the look is fun and as someone who loves fashion, I tend to fiend over gothic clothing, vintage brands, thrifting, etc. And that is certainly part of it and who I am(one of my passions) but it's not the whole grain of what goth is about. And it's important to know the differences between subcultures and what is just an aesthetic.
@@swaillidan5558 Personally, I don't consider gothic metal as goth music because goth music is based on rock and punk influences. Gothic metal is also contradictory cause goth music and metal are two separate subgenres of music, with their own subcultures. Goth music consists of, just to name a few, darkwave, goth rock, cold wave, ethereal, deathrock, and post punk.
@@dungeonfvck What do you do in the goth culture besides listen to the music though? Why would someone be considered not a goth if they listen to the music but don't dress that way? It's just a fashion that is copied from an artist and elaborated on by fans. But while The Cure dressed like ghosts, Joy Division dressed like schoolboys and played much darker stuff.
@@ZBR_ProXP Let me explain something to u. Goth music is literally a MUSIC SUBCULTURE. That's why there's goth music to begin with 1. And 2. Goths are normal people. We are not objects, we are not monsters, we aren't all these stereotypical things that people associate with us. Goths are day to day people. We have jobs, families, kids, responsibilities, we do all things that humans do. This whole misconception made against goths were made by normies. No goth would ever back up these false claim against us. We know the root of the subculture that we chose to be part in.
I hate how mainstream stream media treats goth like it’s a fashion trend when it’s not its a whole entire culture. Treating it like trend is disrespectful towards goth culture.
Yup. Very disrespectful and alot of people always say how dramatic we are, YET, if this was used in another context, it would be perfectly fine. The goth subculture is based on our passion and love of goth music. Now, if this for example was used in a way, let's say of sports. Sports is a really huge passion for alot of people too, alot of peope love watching it, etc. If someone were to get a sports fact wrong, a normal fan would prolly react and correct them. Make a big deal about it which they should and so why, when goths do it, we're seen as dramatic and all kinds of stuff. It's also a passion. There's no difference. That's the point and best example I can use for those who don't understand that it's in fact disrespectful for people to throw and use the word goth like it's nothing. It's our passion, our subculture, it's part of us.
It’s crazy to me that people don’t know that our subculture started a little bit after punk, and very similar to punk in some ways. And about the hair, personally I do the crazy big trad goth hair and I know a lot of people who still do too. Deathrockers are alive and well
@aofmual first of all. You have no idea how old I am. Second, plenty of elder goths lovingly embrace new goths. If you think I care about some random bitter persons opinion in TH-cam comment section you’re kidding yourself. Culture lives on in other people and in new ways. Go be sour somewhere else 🙄 you clearly don’t keep up with anyone doing traditional goth these days because there are a LOT of changes
@aofmualI find it funny you believe someone can't identity as part of a subculture just because they aren't part of the same generation. Goth is timeless, and welcomed to everyone. Also replying to every comment under the sun with salty complaints doesn't help your argument.
@@stairsandflowersin Florida in the 80’s when I was a horror punk, my friends were a mix of hardcore punks and death rockers. Gothic was a bit of a cut-down, like “You are such a drama queen!”…”Oh, my gothic!”
Gen Z Goth Dj here. I am the youngest goth DJ I know of in Texas, at least. I started at 19, Im 21 now. I was Trad for a year and a half, and I still choose to embrace it fairly often. I have 3 pairs of winklepickers. I sometimes love doing Victorian inspired looks, I actually wore a gown I made myself at my largest event. Then I was an extreme deathrocker/batcave goth for a while, white makeup, nose chains, contacts, and of course, a huge deathhawk. I even have a rozz williams costume. I was obsessed and still am with hardcore/anarcho punk, too. Now I am a die hard Rivethead, because it kind of always was my favorite, haha. I became successful as a Rivethead DJ and went to so many iconic concerts. I study goth music history and culture at an academic level as well and have spoken on it. It is a music based subculture at its core. It frustrates me when people make it a fashion based subculture, though ironically, I am obsessed with my makeup, hair and clothes. Great Video! EDIT: IM 21 LOL
The main thing about goth subculture is while the visual style is appealing for many people, the music is super niche and hard to get into. And goths themselves are very picky and gatekeepy about what can truly be a part of goth music scene. Literally the only kinda true goth band I like is Fear cult. Everything else would probably be rejected by the community for being false, poser, surface level etc.
I haven't been to your set in a while. I should get back to San Antonio. We should get Dale Perreault to organize something with Rick and Ely Bat at Cream. It seems most DJs play electronic body music. Which is fine, but I like the DEATHROCK style more.
i live by goth culture, my mom grew up as a 70s/80s goth and forever lives by the fashion, music, and poetic suffering. she put me on to joy division, morrissey + the smiths, robert smith + the cure, pixies, the psychedelic furs, bauhaus, etc. and i'm very thankful
if you feel hopeless about the state od the goth scene right now and think that everything about it has been watered down i highly suggest you go outside and either find a goth club or an event or some actual goths and talk to them sincerely a romantic goth
@aofmual The fashion maybe, but not the music. No recent Goth band from the last ten or so years has ever topped the charts or become recognized by a wider audience. The closest we got to Goth being kinda semi-mainstream was when She Past Away and Molchat Doma blew up for a hot second on TikTok because of that stupid "Doomerwave" Meme. Even in the past the music's mainstream popularity was mostly restricted to a specific geographical areas (UK and Europe mostly and almost completely igbored by the US).
@@MysteriousAsteriaI do not really see it (the fact that goth music doesn't top the charts of mainstream music) as a problem.. I feel that overall, it is a niche and it is okay if it does not reach far more than the small community that we are. And that is reflected in the strategy/position modern bands like Lebanon Hanover and She Past Away adopt towards the "goth" label ; they embrace it instead of rejecting it like Andrew Eldritch did, for instance. I think it is better as a scene to be a rather small but solid community with genuine and dedicated people than to reach the mainstream and bring the people that are just here for the trend
Unfortunately goth clubs are a dying breed in France if you dont live near Paris...so yeah, I'm concerned by the state of the scene which to me only subsists through the internet. Also, the US are clearly privileged with festivals all around. Yes yes we have the WGT but in GERMANY and that's one of the few we get...
I would love to see one of these videos on Industrial music and/or Rivethead fashion. Shame most people think we're just another subcategory of Goth, though, mostly because most of us blend the two.
there IS such a thing as 'industrial goth', Rob Zombie and Maryln Manson blended elements of both music styles together, and the clothing aesthetic is a mix of the 2 as well. NIN and Rammstien are pure industrial though, no goth at all in thier styles
"They are doing it for validation as opposed to pushing boundaries" SO TRUE. When I was in school, It was hard to find alt subcultures. Over time emo/goth/hippie have become commercial products. Which isn't a bad thing in the sense of being more accepted. I wonder what subcultures today are the new underground scene. I hope folk punk makes some big waves!
None because social media killed all communities and homogeneized everything. NEw subcultures cannot really form spontaneously, all zoomers have is rehashing the old stuff
tbh i dont see whats so wrong about it becoming more mainstream except for the "i want a goth gf" people. i think its great that people can now dress in a style that would get them flamed a few years back comfortably.
Except for the fact that a lot of the socalled "goths" aren't even goth at all. Just a poser that wants to look "different" or "alternative". Absolutely pathetic group of people.
Me too but I completely agree with what he said at the end about how for most people who dress like a goth are just dressing up. I’ve always been considered weird or creepy especially with my morbid curiosity and love for all things dark and scary and so finally being able to express myself through my clothes only to see the most regular people dress the same feels a bit like mockery. It’s weird seeing something you were made fun of for become mainstream… too bad I can’t be one of the “hot goths” 😂😂
The commodification is ruining it. Goth becoming mainstream is probably when it dies. People can dress in any style they want, they don't need acceptance from society. In fact, these scenes dressed how they dressed because it was rebellion. They could dress whatever and however. They didn't need the mainstream to dress how they did, they basically said "fuck the mainstream". Goth isn't just a style waiting to go mainstream. It's a whole scene with a passion for the music, creativity, "darkness" lol and other things outside the "norm"
Thanks for the video! When I was a teenager I was the only goth in my school and I had people scream at me, people tell me I was intimidating, people ask me if I was a vampire, and teachers make fun of me and ask me if I needed Jesus. This was in the early 2000s. So I grew up during the Mall Goth Era. I grew up on The Cure and other post punk bands and i always enjoyed vampires and the macabre. It's kinda sad to see that the DIY part of Goth has died out somewhat. When you're a teenager and you have limited funds going to the thrift store and buying a basic black blazer and spending hours putting studs and patches on it while blasting music are some of my fondest memories. Now you can go online and buy a mass produced one but where's the pride in that??
overpriced stuff too, as a trad goth the online stores can be great but it's always so much better to DIY it, that's always been the point. I saw a torn up jumper on sale for £40??? it's so much cheaper and not to mention it would probably look better, to just do it myself. I will always try and stay away from big companies trying to jump onto the bandwagon, that's not what goth is about.
I just throw a trenchcoat on top of whatever im wearing when i go to goth night lol. When anybody asks, i just say that my aesthetic is 'trenchcoat mafia'. Fitting because I used to be in a screamo-ish band inspired by Orchid called 'the columbine effect', and we would wear regular cloths but with a trenchcoat on top and sometimes a fake plastic gun lol.
How did we get our hair like that? Crimping irons and hairspray... lots of hair spay... a HELL of a lot of hairspray... yeah... sorry about the hole in the ozone layer
@@wakemeupinside83 Well, back as the 80's turned to the 90's i'm not sure we would have known that trick or had a way to find out. Its not like we had the Internet or even chat rooms. Just small local groups that would occasionally get enough cash together for a night out at one of the big clubs!
The goth style has always been my favorite, but the 90s were filled to the brim with cybergoth and mall goth because it's 'kewl 4 the t33nag3rs'; something I love cuz of how dorky it felt and perfectly conveyed the industrial boom of the 90s, let alone the popularity of alt metal, nu metal, and retail stores such as Hot Topic and Spencer's getting a ton of recognition(and hatred from entitled or zealously religious parents).
Yea that was part of the 90's goth scene. But there were still alot of og goths too because in the 90's, alot of goth music began to branch out. Goth rock, coldwave, and darkwave, getting some more recognition. people seem to always forget about this important factor when talking about the goth subculture's history.

6:30 As a German and Berlin citizen I can't help but feeling deeply sorry for the dark past of our history, helplessly watching whilst feeling too powerless to prevent it ever happening again...
agree, siouxsie sioux is gorgeous and i love her look but there are so many different goth styles and obv its also possible to switch between them and draw aspects from various different styles. i worry that people are just copypasting from other goths online rather than taking inspiration and experimenting and developing their own styles, which sorta goes against the point of dressing the part in the first place imo
he did goth, next he should do gothic. and yes, there IS a difference 'Goth' uses organ synths, and comes from the post-punk scene. Whereas 'gothic' uses pianos and/or orchestral, and has no relation to post-punk or punk at all. Gothic is based on classic literature and classical music, but remade in a modern way with distortion and other effects.
One of the most irritating things must be the whole "goth girlfriend" thing. Because the "goth girlfriends" are very rarely goth, meaning people talk about things such as goth mommies and then go to harass actual goths...
People harrass me, in a very different way. I get trash thrown at me and called slurs. Maybe it’s because I’m in a republican area, maybe because I’m goth.
VERY. The men that have the whole "goth gf" mindset are the most disgusting people I've ever encountered. The whole fetishization of goth is so awful and dangerous. We are not objects. We are goths because we love the music and we should be seen as humans not statues.
goth has been getting a lot more DIY lately. kids these days are getting more and more exposed to older bands like Joy Division/New Order, Cocteau Twins, etc. I think an old-school revival is incoming, and I get the same feeling from what's going on with shoegaze rn.
Even when you've shown the outfits where you said "everyone tries to look unique by wearing the exact samw outfits and the exact same colour" I know where you're comic from but the outfits you've shown looked so amazing 🥰 Its just what I like, idc
Ackchyually, there is a connection between barbarian Goths and goth as a subculture name! The barbarians were barbaric --> the XVIth century art critic, Vasari, called the gothic architecture "gothic" as an insult --> the grim romantic literature was inspired by the architecture from middle ages (you know which one) --> boom, goth music.
Which is one of the great things about being 40: I can literally wear whatever the hell I want and not give a shit about trends. If I want to dress like a hippie fucked a goth, then that's how I'll dress!
as a goth i agree about how this gen z ruined the point and the realness of gothic culture, im sick of how ppl treat or talk to me bc they simply never seen a real goth before but the fetishized version of gen zs ''goth'' thats CRINGE.. overall us and punk and metal heads will alwayes be called Satanists so whatever ig
Now is the time to give it a go! The music is a foundational part of the style so I recommend getting into some of the bands that really help shape the look too!
As Shia LaBeouf said it: Just do it! The only way to gain the confidence is to learn to endure the uncomfortableness. You will care less, once you are at certain point, but you owe it to yourself to try.
I listen to alot of dark wave, Goth music, but alot of other music. Since young i always wore black, never understood what goth was, and neither do i feel like dressing as a trad goth male... But since a lot of people say being goth is related to your music taste, i think i might be able to get grouped with goths... But i dont consider myself goth, people call me emo and goth all the time though... I listen to alot of other music My clothing style is a mix of goth, hiphop, skater style, and grunge. I just wear whatever i want with no cares about what label it might be. Just be who you are, listen to whatever music you want. Not everything needs a label.
The first term for Gothic music was described for The Doors music in October '67 by critic John Stickney. Using the word to describe meeting with the band in a gloomy vacant wine cellar in a Delmonico hotel. "The perfect room to honor the Gothic Rock of The Doors."
I really love your explanation of goth fashion. In this video, I recently decided to try the trad goth makeup style but make it a little more “doll” like, I went to school with that make up. People were so rude and just being assholes for genuinely no reason. I know my make up didn’t look bad it was just people are assholes. I really wish that the goth style wasn’t just a water down to basic white girls with a heavy eyeliner and black clothing
I think the saddest part is that the average OG Goth is now pushing the 60 if not 70 year old age limit, and doesn't actually go out dressed as Goth, and hasn't in a huge number of years, (Possibly for good reasons) And this has led to the younger generations keeping the fashion alive, as the now very old, out dated music would never, or at least rarely be heard from their parties. As a Trad Goth, who does still dress up full-on at least once a year, I'm actually happy that we had a small impact, even if it is just our choice of fashion style. PS: I dress as Mall Goth now, for events because I like the endless options. And my wife? Totally Cyber Goth, while we enjoy Sisters of Mercy. Siouxsie's music hasn't stood the test of time for my enjoyment. :( But Specimen still get's played loud and proud!
I love that your videos are informative as well as hilarious. I’m always wanting to learn more about alternative subcultures and these videos teach and amuse me. Your videos make my days a little better and cheer me up
Thank you SO MUCH for highlighting the loss of victorian era, horror, and historical vampirical depictions inspirational influence in the modern "Goth" scene. Hopefully, things can be steered back towards the more distinct and beautifully macabre imagery it once held.
the good thing is, that goths can usually tell wether or not someones in just for the fashion, so it doesnt really affect the subculture as such. after 25 years int the subculture, i can say this fetishization has happened before more than once. and it never worked. id say the btggf is in its last third, if not fourth of its lifespan
Idk if this sounds weird but I have a bit of internalized guilt for joining the subculture so late, especially when it’s way more accepted now. When I get glowing compliments on my fits and people saying they like the music I play on night drives, I can’t help but think of older goths who had to put up with so much bullshit and then beat myself up for still being nervous about that happening to me and watching my Ps & Qs (even though I’m mainly visibly goth in the South so I have my reasons)
Haha - I wouldn’t worry about it. Literally anyone didn’t sport a prep look in the day (and I say that as a dude who went to an all-boys prep school) got grief. Then you’d get grief from the people within a scene for not having been to whatever show or whatever shoelaces you had on your DM’s. Everybody gave and everybody got grief and the goths more than any seemed to delight in it all. Which is all to say that, to a large degree, all those bumps and come-ups were asked for - to justify how everything sucks, to feel cool and different, to define in and out groups, to “shock” the regular conformists, to not be poseurs, to hear from their friends that their look was cool, etc. There’s nothing wrong with that, honestly, but in my view it all felt pretty performative and rigid sometimes, like there was some big divide between those who liked the Smiths and those who liked the Cure, as if liking both wasn’t possible. So I just started being honest with myself that while I liked Minor Threat and 7 Seconds, I also liked Rush and Journey and the Darkness. So don’t feel any guilt for being what you’re into - you can’t control your age and anyone genuinely part of a scene should be stoked that new people appreciate what they found inspiring. Just don’t turn around in five years and call some young kid a poseur for getting inspired by what inspired you, right? We all take cues from what came before us and music and self-expression are some of the joys in life. :)
i understand that completely. i’m 21, joined the emo scene in 2014, and in the last few years dabbled with goth music, but now i’ve been suuuper into it. there is that embarrassment i feel, the “should i even wear goth fashion because everyone might think i’m a poser?” whilst listening to a hundred playlists with all kinds of goth songs. it’s great that so many communities are being more welcomed, and i don’t think other people should stop us from enjoying what we like. so what if they think i’m a poser? i know who i am and that’s what matters ❤
I was at goth week this year in Whitby and I was not prepared for the amount of fucking goths that turned up, they literally blocked the streets. Big respect thought, some put in a lot of effort.

It's funny how now that I'm older all I tend go wear is a band t-shirt or a black sweater, some black jeggings, and black shoes and be done with it lol. I don't keep up with the TikTokin kids so my only mission is to see as many old school acts before they retire/kick the bucket.
When I was in high school (20 years ago) someone asked me and my friend if we were 'goth'. I said no and she said yes. I said "no you're not. You listen to KoRn, Kitty and Slipknot". She asked me what 'goth' was, and I told her about Bauhaus, Christian Death, Industrial Music, etc. She came back to school a week later as a full-blown goth girl, and only listened to those bands and genres I had introduced her to.
It was said the Ian Astbury lead singer of The Cult was the one who used the word Goth first. He used to squat with Andrea(andy ) From the Sex Gang Children and called him "A Gobling Goth ".
damn bro, you got me subscribed with this one. Well done... Id love for you to dip into the japanese very complicated Gothic lolita which has some crazy twist and turns...
You forgot to list the staples of GOTH 1. Love of Goth music 2. Love of Goth Fashion 3. Adopting Goth attitude Love of the Goth music is easy. Fashion is hard for males. Most Goth girl went out with punks or metalheads. Goth guys that were fashionable played for the other team. Goth attitude, God help us, is cancer. Any normal position is made perverse. My best example is the following. There was a party hosted by a Goth girl. She is crying in her room. All her friends are giving their condolences and comforting her. You ask, why is she crying? Well I'll tell you. She opened a door in her house as the party is full swing and finds her boyfriend and her male homosexual best friend going at it. That's my example of what Goth is. Music is sadly secondary or irrelevant. Extra points for drug addiction or hypersexual. Good video.
People use to call me goth back in high school because I wore metal band t-shirts and black jeans. Fuckin' no one ever had any idea what "goth" meant and they always just used it for people wearing mostly black clothes.
It spans every age grope, it includes all music, its focus is not to exclude but to embrace the individual in yourself and embrace the world around us for all its horror and to smile back and say i don't give a fuck!!!

My wife is a romgoth, so to make it simple, romgoths wear clothing closer to costumes, vicgoths wear more vintage style clothing it's closer to cosplaying than anything else. Basically a lot of vicgoths will look at clothing patterns from the early 1800s all the way up until the later years of the fist ww1 and more or less accurately recreate them but with more modern materials and black serving as a base. Personally I like it when my wife dresses like this, but it's a real pain in the fucking ass getting where I need to go through 3 layers of petticoat and a thong Romgoths take more of a cosplay approach to it, usually this is done by going off general dress blocks and adding some fantasy elements or mixing elements from different eras and cultures together and of course adding a healthy dose of Tim Burton esc accessories.
Yo i subbed to you after i saw that guide to nu metal a few weeks ago and i was wondering if you could do a guide for trap metal? I genuinely like the genre and love to see you shit all over it lol
romantic goth is so cool i wish i could go out everyday dressed like a fucking vampire queen who lives in the victorian era... anyways goth culture is MAINLY about music so it doesn't matter how someone dresses in my opinion, and people bashing others for their fashion style not being goth enough and mocking them is at least ridiculous. For me, if you listen to gothic rock, gothic metal, post-punk, darkwave etc. and your self expression is somewhat unconvetional and rebellious, then you're a goth!!
Im convinced by this point that the most counter culture thing a man can do is dress in an extremely bare bones, single fabric, single color, featureless uniform that covers everything bellow the neck. Essentially the mao suit. Everyhting else is gonna be too conformist in its attempts to be unique.
I mean, a lot of my fashion sense has always come from early on Goth bands like the cure, siouxsie and the banshees, bauhaus, but also I also add in some David Bowie style
I'd disagree on every teen girl wearing a goth-like outfit being posers, honestly, I think it comes down to the fact it is easier to wear certain every day aspects of it. Casual goth isn't bad, it just makes sense for more people. While I would not call these people goth unless the subscribe to the sub culture, I genuinely see no problem with others taking inspiration from it, it's not some degradation of society, though I can get the annoyance of assigning this the label of "goth" when they are not part of the subculture whatsoever.
They were weird as hell... in my opinion more Ravers than Goths, especially because of their Rave attitude, making a dance show out of it. I have no idea about the rave side, but for me it looks like a Rave in Moll with darker music and fashion. But in my opinion it was annoying to have them ruining the mood in the goth clubs. They wanted to party so much, and felt repelled by huge part of the goth scene, that's why they went to party under that bridge in Düsseldorf. Was a weird time...

@aofmual How do you mean "styled like the adults when you were a baby"?
depends where u live, being goth in a small town still sorta shakey (from my experience)
It's the life cycle of any underground culture - it starts out small and countercultural, then more people figure out about it and it loses its original purpose. Any intentionally "unique" scene will ultimately contradict itself given enough time
Thankfully though, whimsigoth of today still is creative, most people thrift their clothes and make their own jewelry
this is the concept of capitalist realism, everything even the anti-capitalists will be commodified and become capital
While such individuals mostly don't identify with any specific element of the culture they adhere to, they still project their own needs on the given cultures.
not y’all forgetting that goth is a music subculture
and so do many poser goths. we call them "aesteticharke" in Serbia, which roughly translates to aesthetic girls. when i say we I mean the true goths and other sub-genres such as punkers and metalheads
Isnt it more about mindset tho? With the fashion, music and opinions being the by product?
@@Djnekro2302no it’s music based first, everything else second
Do you consider gothic metal bands like Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Theatres des Vampires, Draconian, etc. goth music?
But while The Cure dressed like ghosts, Joy Division dressed like schoolboys and played much darker stuff.
if they wear mostly black they may listen to black metal so i’m gonna annoy them
@@ZBR_ProXP Let me explain something to u.

I’m pretty sure goth clubs don’t exist outside the UK. We call them “malls” here. /s
Ew.
Definitely! Industrial needs it’s love
!!!
This is true. All of the goth clubs I've attended will play anywhere from 80's new wave goth to EBM, aggrotech.
cybergoth is deeply connected to industrial tho so it IS still goth...
there IS such a thing as 'industrial goth', Rob Zombie and Maryln Manson blended elements of both music styles together, and the clothing aesthetic is a mix of the 2 as well.
Yeah, and of course not everything stays the same just look at 1st wave, 2nd wave and 3rd wave goth.
It's a whole scene with a passion for the music, creativity, "darkness" lol and other things outside the "norm"
it can't be "mainstream" because being goth is not being standard, if so, becomes really really popular, it will have no purpose in being it
I wouldn’t label them as exclusively goth, but it’s weird The Birthday Party didn’t get any mention. 80’s Nick is irrefutable goth inspiration
also morticia adams and 'the munsters' and other witchy shows from the 60's inspired gothic looks
I will always try and stay away from big companies trying to jump onto the bandwagon, that's not what goth is about.
i was always scared of the 'tall, intimidating long-hair goth' look of Type O Negative, that several dudes were rocking back in the day lol.

The goth style has always been my favorite, but the 90s were filled to the brim with cybergoth and mall goth because it's 'kewl 4 the t33nag3rs'; something I love cuz of how dorky it felt and perfectly conveyed the industrial boom of the 90s, let alone the popularity of alt metal, nu metal, and retail stores such as Hot Topic and Spencer's getting a ton of recognition(and hatred from entitled or zealously religious parents).

agree, siouxsie sioux is gorgeous and i love her look but there are so many different goth styles and obv its also possible to switch between them and draw aspects from various different styles. i worry that people are just copypasting from other goths online rather than taking inspiration and experimenting and developing their own styles, which sorta goes against the point of dressing the part in the first place imo

and yes, there IS a difference
'Goth' uses organ synths, and comes from the post-punk scene.

I've been waiting for you to cover a video on the goth subculture
After misusing the term goth in several videos prior, we were owed this
How tf does someone misuse goth
Mall goths took over and set the standard. I dated a modern goth. She didn’t listen to goth music, she was into trendy brands and bands.
I love goth fashion. I'm not really confident, so i wouldn't really wear things like that in public, but I love people wno do
Now is the time to give it a go!
Shout out, KingCobraJFS. A true goth bad boy who definitely smells good. TWU.

I listen to alot of other music
My clothing style is a mix of goth, hiphop, skater style, and grunge.
It is kinda annoying what goth has become but I would've never gotten into the music if I wasn't first exposed to the current "goth scene" lol
:( But Specimen still get's played loud and proud!

the good thing is, that goths can usually tell wether or not someones in just for the fashion, so it doesnt really affect the subculture as such. after 25 years int the subculture, i can say this fetishization has happened before more than once. and it never worked. id say the btggf is in its last third, if not fourth of its lifespan

Coolea keep bringing the heat man. Doing gods work.
You forgot to list the staples of GOTH
1. Love of Goth music
2. Love of Goth Fashion
3. Adopting Goth attitude
Love of the Goth music is easy.

Goth/emo fashion look cool for nearly 20 years now
Wish you talked about deathrock and how it blends punk/goth fashion but good video.
It spans every age grope, it includes all music, its focus is not to exclude but to embrace the individual in yourself and embrace the world around us for all its horror and to smile back and say i don't give a fuck!!!
finally, a video describing actual goths instead of e girls who listen to lil peep
#Coolea . I been dressing #victoriangoth since late 1980s, that's when Gothic Subculture did started in Toronto, thank you to share this with. I was teenager I started to dress Victorian Goth.
I like Goth fashion and music but I blame cartoon network for making a lot of us down bad for Goth women 😂
Most goth women are shallow, superficial, stuck up, judgemental, bitter, hateful and hypocritical. Most of goth women are no better than any other women.
I'm quite literally the only trad goth in my entire province, keeping it real
I’ve been watching this channel for a while and the memes in the background have always been cute but the one at 1:31 KILLED me. Honestly one of the top 10 videos of all time
@aofmualWhy are idiots like you so salty over a new generation wanting to identify with the same thing? You'd prefer the subculture to die instead?
the editing in this video killed me i think only gen z understands all the references
idk that i consider myself goth but i do love me some goth music
My wife is a romgoth, so to make it simple, romgoths wear clothing closer to costumes, vicgoths wear more vintage style clothing it's closer to cosplaying than anything else. Basically a lot of vicgoths will look at clothing patterns from the early 1800s all the way up until the later years of the fist ww1 and more or less accurately recreate them but with more modern materials and black serving as a base. Personally I like it when my wife dresses like this, but it's a real pain in the fucking ass getting where I need to go through 3 layers of petticoat and a thong
Romgoths take more of a cosplay approach to it, usually this is done by going off general dress blocks and adding some fantasy elements or mixing elements from different eras and cultures together and of course adding a healthy dose of Tim Burton esc accessories.
Since this video is goth related, I just want to say Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance fuckin rule
I really loved this video , made me laugh a lot with the visuals hehe XD
Im convinced by this point that the most counter culture thing a man can do is dress in an extremely bare bones, single fabric, single color, featureless uniform that covers everything bellow the neck. Essentially the mao suit. Everyhting else is gonna be too conformist in its attempts to be unique.
THANKYOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
My #1 goal in life is to be goth in the way it originally was and look like Siouxie Sioux
As a longtime goth i gotta say you nailed it .
I mean, a lot of my fashion sense has always come from early on Goth bands like the cure, siouxsie and the banshees, bauhaus, but also I also add in some David Bowie style
I always loved the goth style, I just could never get with the music - my personal sense of style is way too basic, anyway.
I used to go to Death Guild in San Francisco, and wear polyester disco clothes to piss people off.
Shout outs to all the tech and street goths.
Errm, where’s my tig biddy goth gf? 🤓
Goth is 80s my guy you kept saying 70s lol punk was 70s but good video
Goth started in the late 70s.
@@coolea Yeah, but it only really got going in the 80s. As a concept, goth is an 80s thing
@@monicasmalley3336 for the late adopters aka followers maybe
Ending on the Goth Rave video under the bridge is ending on a positive note
They were weird as hell... in my opinion more Ravers than Goths, especially because of their Rave attitude, making a dance show out of it.
I have no idea about the rave side, but for me it looks like a Rave in Moll with darker music and fashion. But in my opinion it was annoying to have them ruining the mood in the goth clubs. They wanted to party so much, and felt repelled by huge part of the goth scene, that's why they went to party under that bridge in Düsseldorf. Was a weird time...
I was a bit late to the video- BUTT DAMN BOI, U LOOKIN' DROP DEAD GORGEOUS ♡ The tinted red in your hairdo, really compliments your skin / top!~ 🥀 Aah, yes, Gothic Lolita ♡ For that black n lacey deadly kawaii deco look 🖤🩶🩷

The sexualization of goth women is so crazy I stopped dressing up cuz of all the creeps

Thankyou for happily and cheerfully informing me that my whole life has been a delusion, I was never more than a mall goth 🦇
"goth gf's" also known as cosplaying manic pixie dream girls.
