Almost 5 years later and I am still an open wound with the passing of Chris. I was in Seattle during the rise of Grunge and the energy downtown was refreshing after a decade of Hairbands. Chris turned musical talent of the time up to a more sophisticated level. Man.........I miss how he saw music and his place in it!

Yes, "grunge" is about the worst title you could apply to such an awe inspiring musical scene! The word "grunge" just sounds ugly, like some kind of horrific disease or filth! The music that came out of Seattle was expertly played, very heavy and fierce, and featured deep, heartfelt lyrics that meant something. I call it rock and roll! Peace!

@@treff9226with the history and how the bands of that time where and what they stood for, grunge is a perfect word for all them Seattle bands. Look into it a little more. After reading a soundgarden book and nirvana book I then understood what grunge actually meant!

I am in my garage drinking and smoking cigarettes mourning a man I never met but I feel like I knew through his music, other musicians who knew him and interviews. As I am doing this I'm listening to the songs that impacted me the most. As I start to cry I hear my 2 yr old daughter in the kitchen laughing hysterically with her mother. Such an innocence in her laugh. I know I am at the bottom of the list of mourners but I am having so much trouble with this. I don't know how to process this. I am going to make chris proud and go in the house and hug my daughter and relish her. This is a rambling ass paragraph... This just doesn't make sense to me, but it shouldn't make sense to me. I'll love you forever man and I will make a concerted effort to carry you on in my life and I promise I will introduce you to my daughter as soon as I put her to sleep tonight. We will close our eyes to your music tonight. I will always miss you.

I feel you Cody. I can relate to the way you feel. I've been non-stop listening to Soundgarden and Audioslave for a few days now, man a lot of those lyrics are haunting. In the song "Blow up the Outside World" there's
Someone tried to tell me something
Don't let the world get you down
Nothing will do me in before I do myself
So save it for your own and the ones you can help
and many other songs that are so haunting.
Then on CNN I see this gem:
      www.cnn.com/2015/11/03/health/death-rate-middle-age-white-americans/
This thought process had been in the works in his head for a long long time. I wish he could have found what he needed, the missing piece, the link, the puzzle, whatever it was. It wasn't money, or kids, love, what, I don't know.
Take care of yourself Cody, your not alone trying to make sense of this.

cody meridith, I was doing the EXACT same thing, minus the drink! Only because I would have been a blubbering mess instead of just crying. This one has hit me the hardest! When I first heard the news, I honestly thought it was just another internet hoax. Then came the complete denial. While I'll always be forever grateful to have the music that Chris left behind, I can't help feeling devasted, knowing that he was in his prime and I was so selfishly looking forward to many more years of his genius work. He was truly a one of a kind that will forever be missed. 💔

well said. I also feel the same. I can't figure out why after over a year I'm not really getting over it. Hell I have watched this video like 4 times since it happened. I was deeply moved by Layne's passing also, but it wasn't on the level of this. I miss a man I have never met and didn't know. So strange, but I grew up with him. Many of the emotions I felt as a late teenager were felt during his creations, so I guess it makes sense part of me died with him.

Crushed by the horrific news. Just a quick FYI re: Chris tracking his own vocals. I worked at Bad Animals studio during Down On The Upside. I remember Chris, by himself, running the tape machine on some vocal takes. It was a regular practice. The dude was a galactic genius and could easily grasp the concept of tracking his vocals sans engineer. Part of my life's sunshine is gone, but thankful I can hear our brother anytime I press play. Lucky...

Then there was Temple of the Dog, which is still one of my favorite albums of all time, the songs are so beautifully written and Chris's voice is out of this world. He really meant so much to my generation he was authentic. It's 2023 now and I still miss him and find it hard to comprehend that he's not here. He was the heart of that whole scene and still was so much more than that as an artist in his own right. He left a huge hole in all our hearts and will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Chris 🙏 ❤

If there is anything Chris had apart from a fantastic voice, was a natural gift for melody and harmony. Some of his chord elections in many of his songs are unusual, yet they flow smoothly one after another. Thanks for this Rick, if sometime you make a Chris Cornell Harmony study kind of video, it would be great. His chords on his solo album Euphoria Morning, are fantastic...

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Euphoria Morning owes a LOT to Alain Johannes and Natasha Shneider from a harmony /chord progression perspective. That power couple was otherworldy, and with Cornell simply opened an interdimensional portal to a sonic universe we didn't know was possible... only Alain survives and carries the torch for such unique music. Will never stop missing Chris and Natasha and their contributions to the soundtrack of my life.

I'll never forget that terrible day. I woke up early morning, checked my phone, and had a message from my buddy Aldo, his from México, saying Cornell has passed and how he remembers the day we saw him perform in Baltimore were we live at the time... And 10 years later there I was...in Santiago Chile, in my bed, next to my wife...and I couldn't belive what I was reading... I went through all the web hoping to read that it was all BS... But it wasn't ... And it hit me so fn hard.. Like losing a close friend... And now I can say for real that I felt like that...because two years ago I lost one of my best friends... Brother since we were 15..and it feels exactly like the way I felt that morning...that horrible morning... I woke up my kids for school... Trying to hold back the tears... And when they left for school... And I found myself alone at home... I cried for an hour straight... Chris was my idol...the amazing frontman from SG... One of my favorite bands of all time... He loved the Beatles as much as I do... He could sing like no one in this planet... He played amazing guitar... He was handsome.. He was like a friend.. A real part of my life... Since 1991 when I first listened to badmotorfinger in a cassette that a good friend of mine and class mate lent to me... And I played that really loud on my bus ride back home... And I felt stoned by what I was hearing... So beautiful, so dark, so interesting, so powerful... It was like... I just found my next favorite band for life... This is the perfect blend between Beatles, Sabbath and Zeppelin. I didn't go to work that terrible day... I stayed at home crying... Playing guitar... Texting friends... And my buddy from school... Who lent me that cassette back in 91, when we were just 14, told me the most heartbreaking line I've ever read... It was beautiful and terrible at the same time... But pure reality.. He told me "With his death I declare youth officially over".

A big time fan of Chris I followed him through many concerts, groups he sung with and now this. I seen him perform in concert before but seeing the video of his last performance made me cry waterfalls. . You can clearly see he was hurting, he was off-key most of the night and well- out of it. Someone should have seen something was wrong. Who really knows what lead to his death but dammit this hurts. My teen hood years are almost gone. Only true Grudge singer left is Eddie - the rest are dead.
Sound Garden was my go to group when I felt I needed a release from the world. His vocals pierced my soul. No one can or will ever sing like him. His voice was so unique. I don't usually Idolize singers, but he was someone very special and I am honored that I got to go to concerts of his.

Ketterashley82 well said. I saw SG for first time in the 80s at 930 club in DC. I’ve been blessed to see Chris live many times with SG, AS, solo and the TOTD tour. There were times with SG before break up in 1997 that Chris wasn’t sober onstage. The solo EM tour he looked awful. So skinny and pale but that voice was always there even if a little slurry at times. However he was happy and healthy when he came back with AS. I saw him live then and solo. From his AS days, solo stuff, SG reunion etc. I NEVER saw him slur his words, have bad timing either. In the many concert videos never slurry. It blows and boggles my mind that Detroit performance was so out of character and obvious something was wrong. Yet none of band mates, crew, tour manager, BG, the list goes on chose to stay with Chris after the concert and get him some help. This is the part of the story that I can’t get over the anger about. He didn’t have to die.

The thing about music, and what makes your channel so great, is that it's universal. Musical styles come and go, and are reborn and redie. But there is no universe in which the future of humanity is music-less. Music is. As long as there is one of us, walking the Earth, humming a tune, music will always be. This channel hits on the primal emotional drive tapped by music. Everyone who loves music wants to create it. Many are discouraged by how easy it seems, and how difficult it is to do it well - and so they are utterly satisfied to remain a loyal audience. But like any kid who wants to take apart his toy to see how it works - lots of us want to know the inner mechanics of music. Your presentation is competent, honest, and unadorned. And the impact music has had on your lives is far beyond what it was for most of us (who couldn't conceive of a musical career for lack of income). But your sadness at the lost of Chris Cornell, whom none of you knew personally - yet all of you knew personally - is, utterly, universal. And in times of grief we tend to want to gather with those who seem to be in authority, who feel the same. Thanks.

It's amazing how, as a non-musician, hearing about the technical aspects of Soundgarden's music that make absolutely zero sense to me actually make me appreciate them way more.

And I used to always think Cornell is the most grounded of grunge greats. He was never my favourite but the vocals of some of his songs were so outstanding - how could one not be shocked? For example - ROOM A THOUSAND YEARS WIDE..what a song! Hunger Strike, call me a dog and on and on..Even LIKE A STONE, his most accessible song is just great.
"And on I read until the day was done...and I sat in regret of all the things I've done for all that I've blessed and all that I've wronged, in dreams until my death...I will wander on."

watching this 6 1/2 years later and i still miss him a lot. He was definitely one of my favorites of all-time and I felt like I lost a family member. I saw him perform once in 2007 with his solo band and they played over 3 hours filled with his solo stuff, Soundgarden, Audioslave, and cover tunes. Oh and I got to touch his shoulder 😂. What a talent ! RIP Chris ❤

Lol I love hearing someone geek out about Soundgarden like this! Everything Jason is saying is basically why I love them. I didn't know their music was so complex, though, and so far beyond other bands at the time. For me - from a pure sound perspective, they're just one of the most pleasing bands to listen to. They went beyond heavy metal and mixed in elements of punk rock, and added psychedelic, weird sounds that brought out the emotion that they were trying to convey beautifully.
Kim Thayil's heavy, yet delicate, nimble riffs mixed with Chris Cornell's multi-octave vocals singing some of the most weird, obscure, and deep lyrics I've ever heard, as well as some very personal, emotional lyrics that he was not afraid to sing makes them my favorite band.
    RIP Chris

Jason is hilarious with his personal anecdotes, so relatable and down to earth. Thanks for this homage discussion, remembering Chris Cornell and Soundgarden's impact and musical legacy on our lives. Soundgarden was one of the biggest musical impression as a kid that I can remember. (Outshined on the True Romance soundtrack. That lyric "I'm looking California but feeling Minnesota" was so striking and memorable).

Swervedriver, Paw, toad the wet sprocket, screaming trees, ... temple of the dog, these bands were life changing for a young 18 year old kid who was never going to be a guitar shredder, and was never going to sing high opra like notes. These bands showed me it was possible to just play rhythm and write real lyrics, and how to phrase, and put power behind the singing without having to cut your nuts off. The best moments of my life had this music as a background. I fell in love with odd time signatures, and changes in the middle of songs, alternate tunings... these bands were a serious life changer for me. It opened a whole new world of possibilities. Chris Cornel and sound garden opened that flood gate.

Thank you I have always loved this song! I love the guitar and vocals, it puts me back to 1992, I listened to this over and over camping, driving in rain in NW, touring Alaska, "true grunge" rock. RIP Chris Cornell. I had a huge crush his voice, and his mystery.
If anyone checking out this video knew him in anyway, and if he took his life, please forgive him, and please tell him to go toward the light, suicide hurts so many including the spirit.
