    "Rheia" is the groundbreaking album from Belgium's Oathbreaker. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Loma Prieta), "Rheia" is a true game changer for the genre. Blurring lines and dissolving the boundaries of heavy music as we know it today.
    Opener "10:56" begins with a haunting guitar riff and Caro Tanghe's beautifully sung vocal before abruptly soaring to new heights with "Second Son of R". Its blasts of melody mutate into a blackened buzz while waves of tempo changes pound down with intense emotional weight. "Being Able To Feel Nothing" then rolls in like a storm. Chaotically breaking apart to reveal the eye before churning once again. "Stay Here / Accroche-Moi" is an otherworldly reverb drenched acoustic number that leads to "Needles In Your Skin". A deeply personal song that showcases the artistic strength vulnerability brings. It's hard to believe that this is just the half way point of this post everything masterwork. "Immortals" then unfurls as a goose bump inducing monster. This leads to the ambitious "I'm Sorry, This Is", "Where I Live", and "Where I Leave”; A musical triptych that needs to be heard to be believed. All of it comes to an end with mesmerizing closer "Begeerte". Ethereally materializing before vanishing into the beautiful unknown.

    *LYRICS*
    10:56
    The time you plunged
    Into the gray cobblestones
    Of a back alley to our house
    You forgot to use your hands
    To break the sudden fall
    The sun rose when I saw
    Steam ascending from
    Your wet clothes and soiled body
    That is where
    You became meaningless
    Your skull merged
    With the surface
    I mended your broken nose
    *Second Son of R.*
    Raised in between doll-shaped smoke
    Insects in every corner of our rotten house
    I hid in the walls of my room
    Tasting clean air through a window crack
    In these childhood dreams where imagination was key
    I drove the needle through my skin
    Weaving a delicate net to embrace me
    And hold me to sleep where no one could see
    Where no one could hear me breathe
    Your empty house won't comfort me
    Don't make me pity you in the end
    I won't forget the years when disappointment was key
    Blood runs thick in the veins of guilt
    Drowning your promises made never embrace me
    And hold me to sleep where no one could see
    Where no one could hear me breathe
    Your shallow heart doesn't soothe me
    Your false love won't break me
    Don't make me pity you in the end
    This drunken body I've left behind
    And the problems that are no longer mine
    I resided under your broken feathers
    For too long scraps of pictures in a box
    Is what remains of those childhood dreams
    You'll never know, The person I've become

    Lyrics for anyone who's interested :)
    10:56 -
    THE TIME YOU PLUNGED
    INTO THE GRAY COBBLESTONES
    OF A BACK ALLEY TO OUR HOUSE
    YOU FORGOT TO USE YOUR HANDS
    TO BREAK THE SUDDEN FALL
    THE SUN ROSE WHEN I SAW
    STEAM ASCENDING FROM
    YOUR WET CLOTHES AND SOILED BODY
    THAT IS WHERE
    YOU BECAME MEANINGLESS
    YOUR SKULL MERGED
    WITH THE SURFACE
    I MENDED YOUR BROKEN NOSE
    SECOND SON OR R. -
    RAISED IN BETWEEN DOLL - SHAPED SMOKE
    INSECTS IN EVERY CORNER OF OUR ROTTEN HOUSE
    I HID IN THE WALLS OF MY ROOM
    TASTING CLEAN AIR THROUGH A WINDOW CRACK
    IN THESE CHILDHOOD DREAMS WHERE IMAGINATION WAS KEY
    I DROVE THE NEEDLE THROUGH MY SKIN
    WEAVING A DELICATE NET TO EMBRACE ME
    AND HOLD ME TO SLEEP WHERE NO ONE COULD SEE
    WHERE NO ONE COULD HEAR ME BREATHE
    YOUR EMPTY HOUSE WON'T COMFORT ME
    DON'T MAKE ME PITY YOU IN THE END
    I WON'T FORGET THE YEARS WHEN DISAPPOINTMENT WAS KEY
    BLOOD RUNS THICK IN THE VEINS OF GUILT
    DROWNING YOUR PROMISES MADE ME NEVER EMBRACE ME
    AND HOLD ME TO SLEEP WHERE NO ONE COULD SEE
    WHERE NO ONE COULD HEAR ME BREATHE
    YOUR SHALLOW HEART DOESN'T SOOTHE ME
    YOUR FALSE LOVE WON'T BREAK ME
    DON'T MAKE ME PITY YOU IN THE END
    THIS DRUNKEN BODY I’VE LEFT BEHIND
    AND THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE NO LONGER MINE
    I RESIDED UNDER YOUR BROKEN FEATHERS
    FOR TOO LONG SCRAPS OF PICTURES IN A BOX
    IS WHAT REMAINS OF THOSE CHILDHOOD DREAMS
    YOU’LL NEVER KNOW, THE PERSON I’VE BECOME.

    This is the kind of black metal I like to hear. Shit that is not afraid to break the mold and still be heavy as fuck. I'm honestly not sure that any other extreme metal genre is as willing to experiment and branch out as black metal. I can't wait to hear the full album, this shit is amazing and incredibly beautiful!

    • @scumbagpeter
      @scumbagpeter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      This isn't black metal, it's a kind of dark and melodic hardcore :)

    • @resevil2396
      @resevil2396 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Well everyone has their own definitions of genres but its definitely black metal to me. Im not a fan of hardcore and don't hear any elements of it really. Maybe a bit here and there, and theres definitely some progy sounding bits, but there is definitely a strong black metal element to their music and thats what stands out the most to me.

    • @resevil2396
      @resevil2396 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It would be most accurate to say its a fushion of hardcore and black metal. Personally I've only really listened to the singles for the new album so far, which largely ditch the hardcore aspects for a stronger black metal sound with some postmetal in there too.

    • @scumbagpeter
      @scumbagpeter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't understand, what do you consider as "black metal stuff" in this track ?

    • @resevil2396
      @resevil2396 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Generally anything with black metal style vocals (which she kind of has here, though its closer to plain screaming), tremolo picking, and a generally dark sound. But its not just me, their wiki page specifically mentions them as fusing hardcore with black metal.

    Absolutely fantastic song. What a time to be alive... This new wave of black metal (Blackgaze?) with the shoegaze/post-metal/post-rock influences is amazing. • @Voidkom
      @Voidkom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I listen to almost exclusively black & crust. There's no crust in here, it's mainly just dark hardcore and black metal.
      You're probably confused due to crust having a lot of crossover eg. when combined with black metal (Martyrdöd, Iskra, Young And In The Way, etc) or neocrust when combined with dark/melodic hardcore (Tragedy, Alpinist, Jungbluth, Downfall of Gaia, etc).
      This has plenty of black metal elements though, the part from 2:25 til 3:00 is a straight up typical black metal guitar riff.

    • @danielsuarez786
      @danielsuarez786 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reported990 well, your description is so chaotic. It's just blackened melodic death metal similar to early Novembre. But lets say they have their personality. No crust or punk or hardcore at all.

      These artists all have other bands they work with. Creating art this poignant doesn't just happen overnight. Wasn't there like 7 years between Amenra's Mass VI and De Doorn? I'd say that was worth the wait.

    I can't express how much appreciation I have for this music and especially the finale of this song. There is little music that carries me away emotionally like this - and I'm actually not that close to black metal as a whole. The pure, unfiltered power of the desperate screams at the end, which have shed any moment of artificiality, are so frighteningly immediate. I only manage to listen to this song every half a year, but I still keep coming back to it - even though I reliably know that after listening to it, my day is done.

  • @konstantinosxinos4766

    Hits every single time I listen to this. And I love that she holds nothing back with her screams. These are by far the best extreme vocals delivered by a female artist.
