I shared this video with my mechanic who initially suggested I replace the entire transfer case. He replaced the $100 chain and my ML350 runs great. Thank you for posting.

I have the same problem with my 2011 ml 350 4matic I went to the dealer they told me I need to replace the whole thing cost over 4 grands. Thank God I came across this video. I might be good replacing only the belt.

Wow! You made that look so easy!
My 2014 ML350 Bluetec just started skipping-- 117K miles--
I replaced the motor mounts and transmission mount about 3 months ago. They were a pain! Took me two days.
Really enjoyed your professional quality audio and video!
    Thank you!

My GL is at 130K miles now and still not skipping but I can't help think perhaps I ought to change this chain anyway to pre-empt any issues which might cause wear on the sprockets. The transfer case has had two oil changes since I bought it at 38K miles so I hope I've staved-off any wear so far.
Thing is, the GL has high/low range and I believe the chain is different which I'm struggling to find here in the UK. If anyone has a part No, I'd be grateful. Thanks, and thanks for the video. This was extremely helpful. My only fear is working underneath the car. I have monstrous axle stands (6 tons each) and a 3 ton trolley jack but when I changed the airbag springs, I still couldn't bring myself to get under it. It's a bit of an irrational phobia I guess.

My factory MB manual gives their "two-step" torque technique for the driveshaft bolts, torquing to an initial value in phase 1, then turning an additional 90 degrees in phase 2. The values differ for front and rear. In the front at the transfer case, it is 40 Nm, plus 90 degrees, in the rear at the diff it is 60 Nm, plus 90 degrees. In US measure (conversion factor is 1.356) that is 29 foot pounds plus 90 degrees in front at the case, and 44 foot pounds plus 90 degrees in the rear at the diff.

Well she told me it was clicking but kept driving it so she was very lucky. I actually did the repair a year ago but just now got it edited and uploaded. Soon I'll get my cherokee build uploaded.

@shawnmrfixitlee6478 ha ha guess what I have some prius videos coming up lol I bought one to run back and forth to my ranch when fuel was sky high. The f250 w the 7.3 only gets 10mpg so got the prius so I can run out there and feed the animals and water the giant garden.

Question about filling that with fluid. How do you get the fluid in that hole? And how much do you put in there?

Thanks! Ahhh it wasn't that bad just took some time. I've been building transmissions and transfer cases since I was a kid building 4x4 lifted trucks. And have several awd vehicles myself, and guess who has to do all the repairs lol

I just changed the fluid in my transfer case in a W251 -07 chassi after 70k miles, and the transfer case inside was metal clean, the oil was little bit dark red, how come this one was so dirty and full of sludge? How many miles your car had?

Great video! Thank you. Could not remove my driveshaft from transfer case though, all bolts out, soaked with rust blaster and still won’t budge. Had to do complete chain chain out with section still attached to driveshaft. any hint on how to separate both? Thank you. Rick

    • @CodytheCarGuy

2 or 3 days because I was filming and the owner ordered in the fluid so I had to wait on that, along with filming. But this can easily be done in a day.
