One thing that irks me about the backstories is that they never usually answer the question, how do the hunters get invited to the manor?
For survivors, they get letters mysteriously given to them, but we don’t really see how most of the hunters get there.
The manor owner invited them from the other world. The world that never existed in real. A world of mythological creatures.
I am thinking the same things. Maybe the owner of manor conducting a human experiment that turn them into monster or maybe some summoning spell thats why hastur and dream witch is in the manor. ( sorry for my bad english)
I was wondering the same thing. Jack, Burke, and Bane are the only ones I think have an actual reason since the manor’s owner seemed to have previously knew about them. As for people like Joseph and definitely Hastur, I don’t have the slightest clue.

Hey guys, i have a different theory, because I think this is a bit more deeper than we think.
We can see that his sister IS actually the wax artist, but she didn't know her art was used to do something like his brother's work of physiognomy.
To me, it looks like she discoverd it when he became famous abroad. She realized that her beautiful work was only used to spread pseudoscientific racist mentality (racist, but most of all, unfair, because a person appearance and their actions are obviously not related)
She knew about how the "evil was imprisoned in wax" and, seeing herself as evil (because of how her work was used by his brother), she imprisoned herself in wax, killing herself.
I guess she would have wanted to make his brother realize how wrong his own actions was by doing it, maybe pushing him either to stop everything or to follow her in death, but he only fell in a deeper madness.
Actually, now the two of them are "imprisoned in wax", because both of them were evil, one consciously, and the other one innocently.
The "this time, let's do this together !" imply how they're both forever linked by destiny and by the evil. He will, once again, bring her knowless and innocent (dead) sister to do horrific things with him. They became, together, the beast.

I don’t think she killed herself, she was killed by people who probably didn’t like her brothers ‘beliefs’, I think that’s why they wrote on the wall with wax, they probably hated him and his actions so people prob came to kill his sister and made her a wax statue

explain this straight: the wax artist actually had NOTHING TO DO WITH ART. in the past, the wax 'artist' developed the theory of physiognomy, which is a pseudoscience and contribute little to the world. it means to determine a person good or bad by the physical feature he/she appears to be. this caused lots of people to get killed by misunderstandings. their family or relatives felt quite angry so they came to the home of wax artist to revenge. he happened to give academic speech all around the world about this physiognomy and left his sister home. those people cruelly killed his innocent sister instead, who simply though his work was some sort of art form. so, when the wax artist got home, he was astonished and angry finding out that his sister was dead. and this time they will 'do it together'

The study of physiognomy is literally racist 😭 it doesnt matter if he drew a poc or a white person. Physiognomy literally takes the features of people and criminalizes them for those features. This study, by the way, was just an excuse to make black people look bad. Like how people believe black people have a higher pain tolerance because of their skin.

Phillip found a method to detect and identify criminals through their facial features which he created wax models for. The method successfully convinced the world and many criminals got caught and identified since then. The criminal, which Phillip viewed as the wolf-headed beast, had been put to jail with Phillip's help and discovery. He broke out of prison and took revenge by murdering Phillip's sister, drowning her in boiling wax. On the wall, he wrote with the wax "It's ALL Your Fault" meaning he blamed his imprisonment on Phillip. I mean, idk. That's what I understand.

@@jesterparty6947 yeah definitely not a reliable science today. probably why the criminal was so mad to be imprisoned by facial feature alone. but idv has never been too keen on representing accurate sciences over old, unreliable, disproven, yet interesting and compelling sciences you know? think of eda and emile, edas work was a core part of her character yet her methods are definitely not by any standard efficient or reliable today. it’s just more a layer of story telling using the horror or old medicine.

1) I'm guessing that maybe the man's research was similar to how sketch artists draw out criminals' faces for the police or something like that even if there is no mention?
2) We see his sister smiling as the double doors opened. Was that just him imagining how his sister would look when he came home? Or did perhaps the killer come to the house impersonating her brother?
3) The final scene. Was the sister's body fused with the wax artist's?
Curious and curiouser. The story is just so intricate and well-detailed. Loved it. ❤️

@@nightdog4183 A murder made to look like a suicide is what I meant. Perhaps they originally planned to dispose of her body via the melted wax but when that didn’t work they made it look like a suicide.

He would be the best char ever if he has sensitivity settings
It was mentioned that his "works of art" are mere cages to imprison evil, but when he came home, he said that "the escaped beast wrought his sin upon an innocent lamb". Probably one escaped from his "prison" which I assumed that the killer was encased in wax and took revenge on him by killing his sister and encased her with wax as well.
But I believe this is all but metaphors. There must be hidden meanings behind those words.
And yeah it kinda reminds me of Joseph's backstory. His brother died and got obsessed with parapsychology, which is a pseudoscience same with Philip's physiognomy.
And yeah, one I've noticed is that in the ending part, his sister's "wax statue" was beside her, but where's her torso? The legs? Did he...well...nevermind. If he is not afraid of doing that, then it must be that what he is doing to "imprison evil" was to encase the evil people with wax and use their faces to study the faces of criminals.

So if anyone was wondering, this is his story:
Philippe and his sister were two famous wax artists. They were making statues together and they were pretty famous. However, Philippe had another hobby besides creating wax sculptures: studying Physiognomy, so a no-scientific study based on the possibility of a person being a criminal based on their facial features. His research became famous and he started traveling around the world explaining people everything he learned. However, this created many misunderstanding and people started killing each other (I mean when they saw someone with a “criminal” facial feature). So everyone thought it was Philippe’s fault. They wanted to get their revenge and so they broke into his house, but they only found his sister Christine, and since they knew she was really precious to Philippe, they took her and drowned her in a boiling wax tub. When he finally got home, he found the scene.
Apparently nothing happened: Phillippe “got over his sister’s death” and started teaching to his apprentices. However, after his loss his statues became to be… as beautiful as weird. Lots of people found them scary as they looked like “they were catching the moment of someone’s death”. He was arrested a few times for this reason, but never charged for anything.
Nobody knew how Phillip was creating those sculptures, as he was always making them at night. At a certain point, the crime rate of his city increased, since a lot of people started disappearing. The mayor of the city closed all the “night locals”, as they were too dangerous. With the time passing, the criminal rate decreased, so the mayor decided to make a huge ball so that the city could celebrate. The party makers ordered 30 wax statues in Greek mythology style from Philippe to expose them to the ball: Although he only should’ve made 30, Phillipe made 60 statues. During the ball everyone was admiring the sculptures, as they were comparing their height to them’s. At a certain point, when everyone was drunk, an apprentice of Phillipe started wondering a lot about the statues, as he was under alcohol effect. He broke into Philippe’s dark workshop and he fainted. He was awaken by some steps. He was hiding in the dark, so when Philippe and a very drunk man entered in the room, they didn’t notice him.
He started wondering why Philippe was carrying a drunk man into the workshop. However what his teacher was he about to do was something shocking.
As Philippe made the man lay onto a table, he started heating some wax. When it was boiling he took the pot and started pouring the wax onto the man’s chest. He was still alive, so he started screaming from the burns, and so Philippe poured the wax into his mouth as well. Right after some moments, the wax became solid, and the man’s corpse was now a beautiful wax sculpture.
The apprentice was frightened, but he kept his mouth shut. Philippe then inserted some tubes into the statue, as he suck all the blood away replacing it with pink wax. The apprentice ran away while screaming (Phillipe noticed him, but it was too late to caught him) and broke into the ball’s room. However, everyone was dunk, and everyone was admiring the statues… so one on them, under a strong alcohol effect, decided to set fire to them so that they could became big candles. Everyone followed him.
A few minutes later the room was filled with a muddy liquid made out of wax, flesh, blood and other liquids.
Nobody knew what happened to Philippe, but since his body is covered in burns, he probably died in the fire.
