  • 6 Ways to Stay Safe As a Social Worker Doing Home Visits
    Hey Everybody!
In this video I wanted to cover Social Worker home visits...this is a topic that a lot of Social Workers express concerns about when they are working in the field....and rightfully so... because sometimes we go into situation that are dangerous, that are hostile or places where there is a high level of crisis and conflict. Staying safe as a Social Worker takes planning, communication and a keen awareness of your environment and of your triggers. Whether you are a CPS Worker, School Social Worker, Case Manager, Clinical Social Worker, or Foster Care worker...and I have been all of the above...I hope this video will give you a few things to be mindful of as you are conducting home visits. Know that you can grow and expand this list as you gain more experience in the field.

I am a CPS worker and this is a breath of fresh air. You hit the nail on the head. At the same time I am working on obtaining my clinical license so that I can build my own private practice. Thank you. ❤️

Thank you...I know how it was for me when I first started as a CPS worker...safety was covered in college, but it was nothing like the real experience of going to neighborhoods. Best of luck with working toward your private practice! 😊

👏🏼👏🏼 great video! Always have gas so you don’t have to fill up in an unknown area. Hold handlebar when going down stairs at a client’s house too! Learning from experience 😅

I did as well with Head Start in the local projects. The town wasn't huge and I stuck out. i was in my early 20s, I was ultra confident and these were my babies. Everybody gets to know ya pretty quick. I was never scared. I didn't even have a badge or phone back in good ole 2003. 😂 I loved that job!!

Is this video or channel only for female social workers? Is this advice for females only. Please clarify...

Some good pertinent points in this video if a little simplistic. However, Do male social workers wear high heels and have a handbag? Why would you wear sweat pants to a visit? Not very professional. Having confidential notes at all with you is a no no surely? It’s not 1993! You never discussed home visits during a pandemic? How is this handled? What precautions to take? What about PPE & problems with communication?

Male workers may not wear high heels, but I have seen many wearing sandals and shorts on hot months. I am old fashioned and always wear slacks and either sneakers or shoes, but it is also an issue of knowing your role. Again, may not wear sweat pants, but a PT may. I have strongly suggested interns I’ve worked with that pants and closed toe shoes are the way to go. Having been making home visits for 18 years in rural NYState, I appreciated the video. It is a good primer. All agencies should have a comprehensive safety training and a home visit policy that should be both non-intrusive and (most importantly) followed by all staff making home visits.
      Nice job.

@@georgehillyer7959 American SW’s must have different dress codes. Shorts and sandals for men in the UK isn’t the done thing. Then again it rains a lot. But defo never jogging bottoms or whatever you yanks call them… sweatpants? Pure chavvy
