@@jds6964 The fact is Charles Lindbergh technical advisor for Juan Trippe and Pan American World Airways developed the route structure South Pacific………..
I did. the Same flight too in both directions and on our flight it was the captains last flights before his retirement and we always got a water salute at every airport and he flew around all the beautiful islands before landing instead of performing a normal approach. It was wonderful. We even got a picture with him. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
I flew this on Continental (air micronesia) back in the 80s from HNL to GUM. It was an old 727. There were no entertainment systems. I must say the food we got is better than now. I recall 2 full meals and lots of snacks. What an experience. I wish they had cameras to easily record stuff bk then. I remember seeing Kosrae and Pohnpei and thinking they were so beautiful!
The last time I made this trip was in the mid-90s, of course then it was Continental's Air Micronesia (Air Mike). I made my first Air Mike trip in the early 80s, flying the classic '3-Holer' 727-100, as well as the 722 and 757 in the 90s. I am glad those idiots (UA) in Chicago did not slash this service as was rumored, these routes are very important to the islanders of the Central Pacific. Very good video of an unusual route.
They change crew after the flight to Majuro, and I believe seat 1A and 1B are reserved for the pilots that fly the first leg. If I'm not mistaken, they recline 160 degrees.
Ah, the island hopper! You know, if Aegean will credit me each hop toward retaining my status on their program I'd totally do this, but right now they're only honoring Greek island hops on their aircraft. Looks fun, though! - Red
They don't fly any longer than other pilots...flying time is limited by government regulations. He said at the beginning there are 2 pairs of pilot crew onboard.
This is one of those flights where if something goes horribly wrong, the plane might never be found, especially the first leg between Honolulu and Majuro.
I took the exact same trip this past January and loved every moment of it! It was such an awesome experience. The time just flew by for me! Definitely a must for anyone interested in aviation. Thanks so much for the wonderful video! It brought back some great memories and im glad you had a great time.
Actually I flew on United from Honolulu straight to Guam and then transit to the flight to Hong Kong. This 16 hours flight was much better than the nonstop flight. They didn’t provide food and entertainment on that Boeing 777-200. The worst thing is my flight is also cancelled due to the protest in Hong Kong. They only got the nonstop flight every two days. And I am standing by so I didn’t get another flight ticket. I need to wait for two days!!!! (Actually that is great because I get more time to play lol🤭)
Nice! I always wondered what these flights were like. I used to see an an old Continental 727-100 flying those routes and I wondered how a 727 could fly that far. I flew from Honolulu to Guam quite a few times when I was a flight attendant (on DC-10s). I’m thinking that was 8 or 9 hrs. I used to work 727s between Guam, Seoul, Fukuoka, Saipan, Manila, and Nagoya.

Very unique and interesting trip video! I know it was a long flight. A lot more interesting than a nonstop 16hr economy flight! My flying days are pretty much over, but I do appreciate your taking this unusual flight, and taking the time to do your excellent report!
Great report Felix, really enjoyed this one! It has been a while since seeing a trip report on the island hopper. It has been on my bucket list for quite a while! Didn’t you get hungry only eating 2 sandwiches in 16 hours time? 😱 Regards, Brendan
I did this exact same flight in 2003 with the former Continental Airlines , but in the opposite direction stopping both in Chuuk and Majuro for a weeks diving in each with the famous war time wrecks of Truk Lagoon and Bikini Atoll respectively. Identical weather too . Sunnier in Majuro and rainier on the other islands.! Great memories.
I don't think its final destination is Guam. I've seen this plane in Manila Int'l. The first time I was like "Oh a United 737... Wait how'd that get here?"
I flew yesterday and most of these landings were smoother than what I had landing one time... and it was a smaller plane... at least the captain was cool 😀
I saw a previous video featuring this trip but he was in Business Class and really the only difference was in the amount of food he got....thanks for this video.
@17:45 the pilot does the best landing out of all of them on the shortest runway, and im an avgeek so the pride when we accomplish this is awesome and im also a pilot :)
I'm glad that you had the chance to fly this iconic air route. Some more info: The jet routes were pioneered by Continental using B 737s, the only commercial jet available then that could land on 4800' crushed coral gravel airstrips. The airports have had serious upgrades since then. I have flown this route dozens of times since 1976, most recently this February, 2019, 43 years! This flight used to be super fun with super delightful cabin crews. Since the Continental merger with United as well as 9/11 and the rise of security issues, flying the route has become a terrible ordeal. Sad. Still, I hope all aviation geeks get to ride this amazing flight.
A very interesting trip from HNL to the outposts of the Federated States of Micronesia. Kosrae, Pohnpei and Chuuk (Truk) looked very inviting from the air and would be interesting to explore. Due to the small length of runways, larger jets could not land on some of these islands. I am not sure if that placed limitations on the amount of catering that could be stored in the small galley of a 737. So in light of that, I will not be too critical of the catering given it's complexity of operation.
Catering is likely limited due to weight restrictions. Some people like to fill up coolers full of meat in GUM which gets sent to friends and family then is sent back with fresh fish as you can get tuna for dirt cheap over there.
You can go B737 family from MNL to EWR by going MNL-GUM-HNL Island Hopper then either HNL-SFO/LAX-EWR. Do I have to fill out the Guam Customs form if going to MNL or not

The Micronesian government would be paying a subsidy for most of the route, hence UA still operating it.
