To each their own! I decided to try the Evans EQ pillow and it works beautifully. I also tried the UV coated EMAD batter and EQ3 reso. It sounds ridiculously awesome. People who hear it are blown away that it's a 16" kick because it sounds so deep and full. Either way, if you tune it properly it should sound great with most head combinations.
NowI'mMe I’ve been doing all my local club/casino gigs, and it’s killing it! Sound guys are blown away. I don’t use the snare live, but erething else??? Kicking!!!
It's mind blowing how good those breakbeats kits sound and how versatile they are. I almost bought one awhile back but settled on the tama cocktail jam for those needs and also am very happy with it.
sounds really good, I just picked up a Yamaha jr kit, it is missing the riser so just ordered a gerbralter riser for it, can't wait to get this kit up and running
Thanks man. The first thing I did was put black remo emperor (or admiral) I forget, heads on the kick.....big mistake. They were made for a floor tom and I couldn't get them to sound right. I put the stock heads on and it's much much better. Sound about right? I tuned mine a little lower than yours and don't have anything inside now, I think I'm digging the sound. The video helped.
Lord Durazno wow thanks! Yeah love this QBB kit. The cell phone mic was kind. Lol. Thank you so much for watching, and know I’ll have 2 killer new QBB vids out soon.
Thanx, Kenny! Would You be so kind and tell us how You set up the riser and the spurs ? I'm having a hard time to position the bass drum so that the beater of the pedal hits at 90 degrees angle... Greetings!
Woyt D I cheated the pedal back on the bracket as much as I could using a folded piece of cardboard (like a coaster)for extra grip its the only difficult part of the kit. Once attached adjust the spurs to where the drum is level to the ground from to back.
Pretty darn loud if tuned properly, especially with appropriate heads. I'm some new head configurations to max volume, and control. I'll let ya know how it turns out.
Destin Brown Love it brother thanks for letting people know. ALOT of people have had problems with the riser. I just filmed a tech solution for the problem, and will be posting the video soon. If there is a solid option from Gibraltar, however, ain't no reason not to get something that works. :-)
Man I don’t really know. It’s been awhile since this vid. What I would recommend is tuning the batter as low as it can go without wrinkles. Micro turns are a must. Then measure that tension. Make sure it’s even. Then tune the Reso head 1-2 tension settings higher than that. So if FOR EXAMPLE the batter gives you a 72? Tension your front head at 73 (or 74 if needed) . Thank you for watching, and commenting.
+Rawker101 my pleasure. Yeah I love my Lizzie. She wandered into the shoot. She always tries to sit at my feet when I drum. I won't let her because of the volume, but she still tries. 😆
I'm totally digging these fine videos! I'm curious if I added a Roland TD-2 (I think that's what it's called!) module to just beef up the sound of the kick drum and the snare, would that be more effective in a live setting than just microphones?
My Pleasure DK. I just got a Calftone Front Head so I can't wait to hear how that sounds. Plus I set it up with a Kelly Shue Flatz and a 91. Whoo Hoo Video Coming Soon.
Hi Kenny, how do you manage beater height with this kit? The riser doesn’t seem to get the bass drum high enough to get the beater hitting near the center of the drum (without shortening the beater, which I’d rather not do too much). My beater is hitting about 2 inches above center. I think it’s at a roughly average beater height, though I’m not sure.
Luke Simpson alas it’s always a bit high unless you adjust the beater height. I’m about to try an Ahead Sonic beater to see if it enhances the boom. Thank you so much for watching, and know I’ll have 2 killer new QBB vids out soon.
i realy dig the vid. and i love the set. i'v been thinking about gettin one. but would you recomend it for a fast punk rock band that plays small bars and back yards?
+pete jones Actually YES!! That is the whole point of these vids. How to make these little drums rock their hardest for a club. While I will say that bigger drums are great for Punk rock, FOR THE PRICE, these tubs can pack a punch, are super easy to cart around, and take up very little space comparatively to a larger kit. If you get one, check out my other vids on setting up this bass drum with a ported front head. Helps when in clubs/outdoors, and you need to mic up that kick.
im just got my emad clear 16" bass drum head and 3" ring. Do you tuning wrinkles away from batter and reso heads? Or wrinkles away from batter head, and resohead littlebit tighter?
spuge kasi just above wrinkles on the batter, and on the resonant tune it a half step or a whole step above the pitch of the batter head. thank you so much for watching my vids
I just put a full size kickport in mine, had a bare hole for a while. The bare hole took out pretty much all low end and the kick port brought a decent amount back
+ric2play first of all if you have not checked out my video on how to adapt the kick riser please watch it. The method works well. If grip is the issue, try a small piece of cardboard (like a piece of a bar coaster to put between the riser plate, and the hinged securing plate of the Iron Cobra. Gives it something to bite into.
Hey mate good vids, ive just bought my "son" a ludwig accent junior 5 pce, was tossing up between that & the questlove pocket kit. Do you know what differences other than number of toms there is between the 2 kits? I want my "son" to be able to play punk/metal, if he chooses to.figured more toms better for metal. Did i choose right? Coz i do love that black hardware on the pocket. If hes lucky he might even get a turn, when dads done warming them up
Alexandertheaverage first of all you bought your son a good beginner drumset. WIIIIIN!!!! 😂😂 I’m not sure if the differences, but I do know that when set up with the proper heads for Rock/Punk that kit will be great as he grows as a musician. I’d suggest coated 2 ply or EC2/Pinstripes on the tops of the toms for those drums, and either an HD Dry or Ambassador X for the snare. If you need help dialing the sound I do offer private tuning lessons via Skype/Messenger. Btw thank you for the kind words about my vids, and thanks for watching.
@@KennySharretts thanks for the reply bro, will look into these options. Cant wait to have a kick ass little kit. My lil guy has got the music in him & it would be a crime not to fuel the passion. Will keep watching all the way from new zealand. Chur bro
On this video yes, I used the stock heads. They are awesome. In another set of videos I use an EMAD on the batter side and a coated G1(which I port). Evans has a couple of different 16" heads with a bass drum collar. I also recommend a Remo PS3 with the Bass Drum collar.
Maybe mention the riser for the kick. I'm not sure how to set it up. The video on the riser I saw on your site doesn't show how to connect it to the drum.
Aaron Gilmartin I think Ludwig has a vid on how to install the riser. Thank you so much for watching, and know I’ll have 2 killer new QBB vids out soon.

Kenny Sharretts thank you sir! And how tight do you think the batter head should be? I know it depends on style, wood, heads, acoustics and all that stuff, but how tight it should be if I'm looking for a punchy and really musical sound?
Raúl Pozada Muñoz Tight does not always equate to punchy. A lot depends on the size of your Bass drum, and how you like the response to be off of the bass drum head. Generally, I would tune a 22" x say 16" BD a bout an eighth turn on each lug above lowest possible tension without wrinkles, then tune the front head a fourth above, use a towel system like the one I made for the 16" Kick drum, and for added punch, I'd put my mic hole in the very center of the front head.
Kenny Sharretts thanks again Kenny. You mean without wrinkles but just finger tight right? This topics are soooo incredibly relevant, thanks for posting this,it is really helpful for all of us

@@KennySharretts The snare comes with the "bowtie" lug casings (a Ludwig trademark). I tuned mine so well, it sounds as good as a much higher priced snare.
Thump is a very broad term. If you are looking for a dry tom sound with a lot of attack, and punch then concert tom style (no bottom heads) may be for you. Especially if you are using concert toms. I can also recommend different heads such as Black dots, EC2's, Pinstripes, and Black Chromes. If you take your bottoms of, howebver, please protect your bearing edge lest you destory the ability to put the bottom heads back on. Often times I will "carve out" the center of the reso head to where it is just a sliver of an edge. That way I can keep the bottom hoops on, yet still have a concert tom sound. Just don't cut your fingers on the sliver edge. :-)

With the riser in place, it hits just above center for the average beater length.
