I find it quit relaxing to watch a shaper at work. I also enjoyed watching you catch that beautiful rainbow trout for your dinner. Now thats what you call a fantastic day finishing off with great scenery and spot of fishing. Can't get any better than that. 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. The elliot 10M was a quiet shaper - had done little work compared to the 14S so the gears ran quieter. When I get some free time I might look again at the bushings on my 14S and see if I tighten up the gaps it quiets down a bit. Of course running it slower helps in that. Missing my trout fishing of late - not much time and the weather has been dreadful. Thanks for watching. Mat
great project on the shaper. What I have found is that shaper tools seem to work better when the chip is directed over the uncut material. Sometimes this appears to be the opposite of logic. I think it is because the tool gets to make multiple cuts over the same surface, not just a single cut. WD40 gives a better finish than kero on aluminium, and it is very important to have enough time for the clapper to seat as it changes from the return stroke to the cutting stroke, particularly when cutting up to a shoulder. If there is insufficient time (not enough rear clearance) then the tool will carve a ramp along the shoulder. My shaper is my favorite machine in my shed, but nne of htem get enough work. Greg
I will take a look at he chip direction next time I set up and see what happens. Interesting comment, thanks. I too like the shaper, I feel far more in control of what is taking place than when my miller sets off. By the time I know of a problem the cutters destroyed and work most likely marred. Thanks for dropping by, I hope to get ome me videos soon.
If you are looking for a 6" vice, you have to take into account the weight of it, I have a Abwood on my Alba 10" shaper, and boy the machine knows it's there!
Hi David, Very true. I have a 5" vice which is a little too big on the box and only opens to 4.5" so a 6" would be overkill in terms of weight. I think what I need is a shaper vice rather than a milling vice - its my understanding the shaper vices open wider for a given jaw width.
Most shapers will use a HSS square bit ground to suit and held in a forged bit holder through the tool post lantern. HSS blanks are readily available on eBay and most engineering outlets. Buy the first bit to fit the width of your tool post slot. Grind it to cut and then make a simple straight bit tool holder for 3/8” or 1/2” square HSS blanks. If it’s a smaller shaper s’y 10” stroke, you could use 1/4” HSS bits . While at a pinch a lathe tool bit holder will work, take care with the top rake of the bit. This should be be within a few degrees (3), of perpendicular to the cut otherwise the bit digs in. There are a few videos on TH-cam about grinding bits for shaper work.
Like the shaper, mmm... something else to look for!, gonna need a bigger workshop! Nice use of a drain cover, finished rest looks very good. My uploads take ages but when I first did them it was even longer, what editor are you using? I'm currently using Windows movie maker and converting to the TH-cam friendly mp4 format it allows you to save the final video in. Before using movie maker I had to use a program called 'Handbrake' after using a Nikon video editor or the uploads could take days...literally! My broadband upload speed is less than 0.5Mb/s.Download is just over 2.6Mb/s
Thanks for stopping by and viewing and your comments. I am using Windows Movie Editor, MP4 - shooting on an iphone in 1080p as I wanted good quality images. I think it boils down to the slow BB we have here - 3miles from the exchange / fibre optics. I found editing via TH-cam was fine as long as there wasn't too much to upload (No. of short clips) - I now ensure the file is finished before I upload. Am thinking of saving the file to a usb stick and finding a decent internet cafe to upload from :-) - otherwise its setting off overnight.
Never buy drain covers from a scrap yard/dealer. 99% of them are stolen, taken right up off the road and motorcyclists have nasty accidents. Be cautious what you buy.
Hi would you be able to send ma a link or a name of the inverter you are using to power the shaper as I will soon be getting a 10M as well Cheers Nathaniel
The details of this unit match the 3 inverters I purchased. All though I bought it from ebay and a Nottingham based outlet on ebay - o you could search for them From memory mine were £120 each delivered maybe 3 years ago ?
lookcreations thank you for the link would i be able to wire a 3 phase socket so you could just plug any machine in as I am getting a few 3 phase machines
@@grieveswoodturningleiceste7388 I fitted the inverter in an enclosure and did just that. a 4 ase output female plug anchored to the wall below the enclosure - I just swap the plus as required. You have to be aware though - if you run a 2HP machine and set the inverter max loads for that motor - a smaller 1.5HP motor would then be 'at risk' as the overload currents are set too high - so either reset the paramaters each time (PITA) or just dont run the smaller motor balls out :-) In 8 years Ive not had an issue.
Sounds fair 😁 I’m still learning, lack space and kit. I also do things the way I think will work for me with the tools I want to use at that time. So it could well look awkward and most likely is. Take a look at a few more recent videos and see if you think I’ve improved or gotten worse. I would be interested in your view what ever it is it doesn’t make you a nob as long as you explain your self. Cheers for watching All the best Mat

I got my self a elliot 10m shaper yesterday. Amazingly good condition.... and we are still in Europe and in 2020 lockdown
Still in Europe .... sort of .hope you enjoy your M10 they are a fine shaper. I’m working my 14S this afternoon isolated in my own workshop 👍

I may have to rethink my uploads - this 25 minute video took 12 hours o upload due to slow broadband in my area. Please add comments and subscribe.
Very nice my friend. I need a Shaper. Sexiest tool in the machinshop.
very handy bit of kit if you can make the room for one. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Hi
I’ve recently been given an old shaper but can’t find where to get any cutters from.
Any ideas please ?

Nothing wrong with being cautious, nothing at all.
i know Im kind of randomly asking but do anybody know a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Brentley Legend I would suggest FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)
Take a look at this guys shaper video - the chips go 'plunk' when they hit the deck ! th-cam.com/video/kG7kt0Zx4MQ/w-d-xo.html

Terribly sorry if i come across as an absolute knob, mate, but you seem to do everything in the most awkward way possible.

Quit mumbling and speak clearly please.
Point noted, I will do my best.
