our 500i broke down after being dropped from 15meters and we had to start using the 661 in the meantime. I had not used the 661 for almost a year since we got the 500i and holy shit I did not think I would miss it so much!

I put a thing film of grease around my air filter base as a type of “seal” on my 044-880 with the pleated filters. Really digging the reviews on this one and that 1-2 pull start every time ❤️...sometimes that 880 gets mad about getting restarts on a hot day!

Hey, I’m hopefully getting one of these saws in October. I’ll be using it to cut fire wood for myself here in Australia. I’ve previously had so many problems with my two 562xp’s, hot starting issues, carbys filling up with dust, I’m over it!! I promised myself never to buy another husqvarna again, I’ve been using husqvarnas for over 20 years now. So, now I’m going to Stihl. Can you please tell me what the filtration system is like? Does it allow much fine dust beyond the air filter? (I almost said into the carburettor). What a difference to have a woman reviewing a chainsaw... breath of fresh air! Keep it up. Excellent job👍👍

STIHL seems to “field-test” in other markets before sending to USA - Personally I will pass on the 500i as I don’t see it being much better than a 462c or a 572xp with a 20-24” bar whilst using considerably more fuel in the process - just my take for my situation; for YOU maybe different eh ? It almost seems to me STIHL made this saw to say “hey , look what we can do ! “ also title of “worlds first f.i. Saw “ is incorrect - it was done decades ago by Jonsereds iirc .... with price tag of $1350+ tax a guy or gal can get a 572xp with full wrap , larger dogs and bigboy clutch cover PORTED for less than the stock 500i ... The 572xp in this state of tune will simply Wipe the floor with the stock 500i - NO contest 😃

After waiting for what seemed like forever... I just got mine today here in USA North Carolina.... She calls her saw "She" and "Her".... Will be the same here! And it clearly says "Made in Germany"... Which to me, means exceptional quality. I can't wait to use it this winter. We are still clearing Hurricane blow downs on our farm from the past two years. Red and white oak, all twisted up in nasty briar patches. Requires back hoes, cables, come alongs and more... PLUS a bad ass saw. I am sure "She" will be an invaluable tool in helping me out... I can't wait to run her.

In my neck of woods we use 14-24” bars on 90% of jobs , seldom does the 395xp with 32” bar leave the shelf ... I “wood” say that 462c with 20” bar is da bomb for firewood cutters ,tree services , lightweight ,great av , good on fuel ; 572xp with 24” bar for felling / bucking - most “STIHL -esque” Husqvarna I’ve ever ran ! Runs like the old 046,460 but smoother ! I’ve run the 500i but imho it’s a “tweener saw” and uses too much mix for the work it does ... with 20-24” bars all 3 saws (462c,572xp,500i) are very close cut times ! The 462c and 500i are quicker revvers but the 572xp has got torque ! I think it’s because of the 39mm stroke for the 572xp vs 34mm for 462c and and ??? For 500i .... I am splitting hairs here and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the 3 saws - all should produce nicely ! Now for Felixia , if you want a lightweight powerhouse and can wrench find yourself an older 064 and restore it ... Best p/w ratio of any saw made to best of my knowledge! Av is not as good as modern saws but bearable ! It can also be taken from 85cc up to 98cc lol 😆... here is a “good one” .... th-cam.com/video/M5YBbW5K25E/w-d-xo.html

In your experience, now that you have the 500i and 881 available, do you still feel the need to use the 661 much? Personally I like the 201T, 500i, and 881 (albeit rarely), along with a HT131 pole saw. Those are my go-to's. For me, the 500i replaced an old trusty 036, which was quite a bit weaker but never failed me. I tend to ignore others, just because they're too close in function to those listed above. But the question remains, do you still find yourself using the 661 often now that you have the 500? Just curious.

I like both ,, The 572' is down on power with the stock muffler setup ,, I modified them now the 572 has the edge ,, The downside it is heavier ,, The downside with the 500i is the poor air cleaner system .. ,, 572 will go days without a clean .. In large pines the 500i needs cleaning daily ,, Both are great saws though .. Just my opinion .. :-)

I recently had a saw seize, (end of 2020) and it’s in for repair, might get it ported too. Seeing how it’s in bits. But I’d been looking for a bigger saw, for a woodland I’ll be part managing for next 5+yrs., mainly beech & oak.
I’d got my shortlist down to a Husky 560XP or 572XP or Stihl MS500i. As you say, the 500i has more power and less weight than the 572; plus in the Brexitania, the 500i is less money. So from what you and others have said/demonstrated, I think I can scrub the 572XP. I’ll still need 550XP for coppice and hedging. So decision time... 560XP or 500i.
But if 550XP is too far gone, I’ll end up with a new 550XP, plus either on the shortlist. Perhaps I just need two saws, instead of overworking the small one on a regular basis.
Note. Now I’ve got it written down. I realise that’s what I do need. Either my saw ported or not + the 500i. Or the 560XP + 500i.

I had no option of a STIHL 500i so it was between the Husqvarna 572 or the Stihl 462cm and I went with the Stihl. I also work on saws a lot more now as a side job and I feel like I’d want to get an up close tear down to the cylinder before I’d commit to the 500i but based on trigger response it definitely has trigger response. How about a video on the 462CM and also your PPE gear that you wear because some of it doesn’t look like what we have available here in the states.

Femalelumberjack just about the gear you use. I found out those trousers you guys have over there are not available here in the states. What chain do you use, pitch, gauge and tooth profile, and how many teeth on the sprocket? It really does take ten to fifteen tanks of fuel to start to get the real feeling of how a saw works. I like to put bicycle handlebar tape on my saw handles for better grip.

I got a question by the way thank you for posting I keep smashing the like button and I am now a subscriber. I am in the market for two saws now. I had some older stihl saws 024av. Now I’m due for some new stihl saws. I love the stihl ms 261 c-m now I need a tree for large white maples. Most of the bases are around 36 to 42 inches. What do you recommend? The size does differ and those are the largest sizes that I have cut to a maximum. Never seen anything larger where I live. Thank you

Hi, glad you like my content!
When cutting trees in that size I would go for a 500i or a 661. Both would be great to work with and perform nicely

Femalelumberjack , I just purchased a 261 in the spring but should have held out for a 500i, so sweet. Very happy with the 261 but that 500 is pretty special. I am in Canada though so who knows when I would’ve been able to get one

Had one for a few months now & it is awesome.
    Only one “suggested improvement”.
Because we also have the MS 880 & 661C - we run 404 chisel tooth chain that we buy in rolls & make up our own chains.
Because the 500i runs 3/8th chain, not 404, there is no drive cog available from Stihl to run 404 chain on the 500i, which is a PIA (pain in the ass) because then you have to buy another different roll of 3/8th chain for the 500i.
Just make a 404 drive cog for the 500i please Stihl so that those of us in old growth forest with big logs who run big saws, don’t have to duplicate everything for multiples of chain size!
Sometimes I wonder if Stihl Engineers ever fall a tree or cut firewood to get the “common sense” things “right”.
How hard is it to design & make a 404 drive cog?
You can see from the video the diameter of tree / logs that we fall & ring for firewood splitting 3-4 feet in diameter.
    th-cam.com/video/x-LamxAh3FY/w-d-xo.html
This is why we run the MS 880 & 661C but the 500i is still lighter for falling & limbing, then the bigger saws for rings.
Just sticking with 404 chain in the Bush for all 3 saws would be preferable.

404 rim sprocket that fits 661 will fit 500i

  • @ironwoodworkman4917
    @ironwoodworkman4917 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Three reasons I do not like the 500i. #1 It four storks a lot when limbing logs and if your chain is not sharpened right. (It works better with a full skip tooth.) #2 It losses power at high altitude. ( If you log in the Rocky Mountains for example, you will notice this.) #3 It is a fuel hog.
It is a very good saw, but NOT the one saw to rule them all, for me.
@Femalelumberjack If you want the most powerful saw to weight in the world. Try the Solo 681. It is a German built saw that is very much like the old Dolmar/Makita chainsaws. It might surprise you.
BTW if anyone knows of a more powerful chainsaw to weight than the Solo 681 in the 80 cc class, Please lets us know.

I hate the “new” style quarter turn caps. I spend more time trying to line it up correctly to get it to close than i do adding oil or gas. I’ve considered tracking down a tank from right before they switched designs so i’d at least have one of the old style for my ms261cm. I also strongly dislike the single bar nut that they went with on some of the newer low end models. My friend got the ms250 and i had just tightened and tensioned the nut. He went to rev up the saw before a cut and it unscrewed itself from vibrations and wrapped the chain. Bar fell. Just a terrible design.
