In 2017 I bought a 1992 Pug 205 diesel as a daily driver that I had for 2 years. Did 45mpg around SE London and 55-60mpg on a run. I paid £300 for it, did the cambelt, tensioners water pump, rear brake shoes and a couple of oil changes, before getting £2000 scrappage from SadIQ Khan. Felt really bad scrapping it, but an old lady had driven in to the drivers side a few months previously and there was no way I was going to match the paint. Got over my guilt with a Jaguar XJ X350 that puts out 3x the CO2 whilst being compliant with ridiculous rules set by the short man, which I still enjoy today.

I've had 3 106s, a brand new 92K phase 1 1.1XT 3dr which was written off by a blind OAP when it was only 2 years old. Turns out bright red cars are still invisble at traffic lights, who knew! Then a 1996 phase 2 1.6XS in white which despite being a mere 6 months old and "Peugeot Approved" at the time turned out to be a complete dog that had been badly repaired (no Car Vertical back then). That one was eventually replaced by pre-registered but as new 1998 XS in Rallye blue which I part-chopped for a Scenic 1.9 DTi in 1999 and lost an absolute fortune on. Or at least, at the time it seemed like a fortune because the car only cost £8000 and I got £6500 for it after running it for a year. That Scenic cost £14,000 brand new which I thought was crazy money and was the first time I'd financed a car. 3 years at 0%, Heady times. I really want another 106 before they're all too far gone to run as a summer car. The breaker for me is I don't like the sunroofs and solid roofed cars aren't too common now, such was Peugeot's love affair with limited editions and the perceived need to "add pizazz" by cutting a hole in the roof and gluing in the up and over window. Surprised you didn’t nip to silverlake for a replacement part, of course that would rely on them having one in stock. And you’d have to factor in the travel costs, so the cheap eBay option makes sense given the aim of this series.
This is a great idea. What would of been coo maybe the next thingl is get an old diesel 106 so you could use waste oil. The prixe per mile would of been stupidly low.
Dumpits side mirrors are the same as those on a 1980's Renault 9. Ask me how I know.. I was taking an absolute murk Fiat for its annual test today - which it failed, naturally - on headlight focus.. (that has to count as a miracle, I thought it would fail on EVERYTHING). En-Route, the fuel gauge was moaning about there not being any, so I thought it best to chuck in some diesel - the diesel budget was 20 quid - it took 15 before fuel started spaffing out of the filler - naturally, being a Fiat, even the fuel gauge is utterly rubbish & lies. I'm now fairly convinced that previous owners have fallen for the same lie & have added diesel - the tank being chock full is proof. Which means the content of the fuel tank is worth more than the entire vehicle - it has a huge fuel tank.. That's a new one on me.
C6 is actually only 33p per mile BUT...it doesn't include tax or fuel. I'd have to go back through my bank statements and calculate the tax costs and then an approximate fuel cost.
@@UPnDOWN Haha, you’re evidently a man with a spreadsheet. 🙂 My Dumpit equivalent is a 2006 Ford Transit Connect. It used to be our office pool vehicle but I liked it so much that when it got swapped for something new I followed it to the auction and bought it. 9 years and 60,000 miles later it’s still going strong and is absurdly dependable. It gets serviced properly and a couple of years ago it was treated to a new sill, but otherwise it costs bugger all to run. Fabulous thing.
.....have you considered running it on stale fuel from all your other projects! Had a Renault 11 Broadway with the similar issue, broken hi/low beam switch, took ages at my local scrappy to find a good un.
Don't bother trying to repair the old switch ,they fall apart as soon as you look at them then hours later after much swearing when you have managed to put it all back together again it works for a week then it shorts out and smoke fills the air especially if the lubricant in the switch catches the heat from the short ,just like Lucas in the old days . Happened to a customer of mine who was too mean to pay me to supply and fit a new unit, after he had melted his and the wiring loom I solved the problem by grafting in a salvage switch and loom from a breakers yard .
I tend to disagree on that. I fixed mine succesfully and it wasn't even that complicated. The only problem was the spring loaded contact pin that was worn and blocked movement due to a ridge. A grinder took care of that...
Dumpit is giving me ideas to trade my current car.. hmm.. I miss the days of running my little Lancia ( Lucy if anyone wants to know :D ) more and more when I'm looking what my current car is costing me. It'll be premium experience they said.. yup.. thinking it isn't for me.
I don't think you need to include even a nominal "purchase" price in the calculation. I doubt the comparison with the Ami includes the purchase cost or any element of depreciation.
Economy, mainly. 1.1 is also plenty fast enough for its purpose. A much lighter engine, too. If I wanted to go faster then yes, a 1.6 would be better, but for road-use the 1.1 is ideal.
Hi mate, break buy and sell these little gems as hobby so if you ever need anything like a decent stalk 🙈😂 feel free to drop me a message, just watching this as we speak 🤙
I literally said the only thing it doesn't include is insurance at the beginning of the vid. I'm not sure how I could have made it easier to understand...
I don’t think you should put an imaginary price on it. With a car of that vintage and value, if you’d paid £5/6/700 for it, you’d be able to sell it for that after a year or so, giving you a net loss of £0.
0:24 Haha, I used to have a budgie called cheapcheap. (spelled a bit different than this, but phonetically it sounds just like it) What are the odds? EDIT: For my 2017 Ford Focus I currently am at €0.107/km purely on fuel costs alone. Purchase price, taxes, insurance, maintenance and added mods would absolutely skyrocket this cost figure.
@@UPnDOWN possibly imagine a realistic price for buying it say £500 but also then take it's residual value into account, although this will probably be the same as it won't depreciate. In fact it's famous now so will be worth more - it will only be a cost if it breaks and ends up being sold for scrap money
You need to factor in the cost of fresh Stanley blade as well.

I'm now fairly convinced that previous owners have fallen for the same lie & have added diesel - the tank being chock full is proof. Which means the content of the fuel tank is worth more than the entire vehicle - it has a huge fuel tank.. That's a new one on me.
No self-canceling indicators ... because French. Non latching indicators ... because French as well.
Scrap yards or vehicle recycling centres are your friends, whether on a budget or not
Do the same analysis on the C6. 🙂
C6 is actually only 33p per mile BUT...it doesn't include tax or fuel. I'd have to go back through my bank statements and calculate the tax costs and then an approximate fuel cost.
@@UPnDOWN Haha, you’re evidently a man with a spreadsheet. 🙂
My Dumpit equivalent is a 2006 Ford Transit Connect.
I could lift the fuel out of the TVR I suppose, but I'd have to factor in what I paid for that, and I don't know the answer.
Maybe do ECO-driving?
Miserly Motoring Experience
Love the video, but using a Stanley Knife on concrete 😮😮😮, a pet hate of mine
It's the only thing I'm not fussed about marking with a blade.
couldn't you try and fix the old stalk ?, and if you can , just send the cheap one back . You did say it didn't fit properly .
It was £16.99.
Go Dumpit
I consider that interior to be “jaunty”……
Hopefully a kindly subscriber will send you a genuine and functional one from a scrap 106.
This car is a jam, hope it will work and stay for a long time!
Good luck with voting tomorrow😅
Haha! I'll enjoy it, I hope.
Surprised a used genuine part wasn't cheaper than a new copy? I suppose with a used part, you always risk exactly the same failure mode
They were about £20, from what I could see.
5.19 - that's what she said
Do you still need a radio / head unit?
I'm sorted, thanks
You could go to a scrapyard and get a original used one for that money
That car is begging for 1.6 8v swap. Probably find that motor dredging the local canal.
No way, the 1.1 is better!
Really? How come, mpg for the series? I’ve never savoured the 1.1i
Economy, mainly. 1.1 is also plenty fast enough for its purpose. A much lighter engine, too. If I wanted to go faster then yes, a 1.6 would be better, but for road-use the 1.1 is ideal.
Brilliant, thanks for the reply 👍
Are the stalks on a saxo different?
I had a xsara Picasso and a c4 Picasso and I swear the stalks were the same as a 206 courtesy car I once borrowed.
Saxo's the same, although there's a RP date change on the 106 that doesn't count on the Saxo, weirdly.
@@UPnDOWN Fun fact: phase 2 BXs and Peugeot J9s have the same stalks (lights and wipers), I know this because I own both 😅
Just put an Audi badge on it, then you will not need indicators !
Ha!
@@UPnDOWN An Audi badge would be more than £16.99.
Cracking little car
Hi mate, break buy and sell these little gems as hobby so if you ever need anything like a decent stalk 🙈😂 feel free to drop me a message, just watching this as we speak 🤙
What about insurance, maintenance, fuel and road tax? Not very cheap
Fair point. I haven't put a value on it, yet.
Well it’s a cheap plasticy part .. no worries, it’s not like you’ll be touching very often …🙄
See, you joke, but you haven't seen the way I drove Dumpit. I barely touch it 😆
0:24 Haha, I used to have a budgie called cheapcheap. (spelled a bit different than this, but phonetically it sounds just like it)
What are the odds?
EDIT: For my 2017 Ford Focus I currently am at €0.107/km purely on fuel costs alone.
Purchase price, taxes, insurance, maintenance and added mods would absolutely skyrocket this cost figure.
Hah! This comment is purely to help the algorithm. Let's see what we can get for poor Dumpit.
Dumpitnomics.
Fix the old one. Of get one from a scrap yard.
You should only allow for depreciation which will be zero
But I want to see how much it costs all in!
@@UPnDOWN possibly imagine a realistic price for buying it say £500 but also then take it's residual value into account, although this will probably be the same as it won't depreciate. In fact it's famous now so will be worth more - it will only be a cost if it breaks and ends up being sold for scrap money
Nasty, nasty things...
What, everything, or just some things?
