In a new Game Creator special, we spend a day with Ishiwatari Daisuke, creator of the world-renowned versus fighting game series “Guilty Gear”.
We will first explore Ishiwatari’s work environment, where he not only directs the Guilty Gear games, but also composes the music, writes the scenario and also handles game and character design.
During our time at the office, we will also meet with Toshimichi Mori, Ishiwatari’s “comrade-in-arms” and rival, who produces the BlazBlue series. Both will share their visions on game creation and their work.
In the second part of the episode, we head over to the Minato Mirai area, to follow Ishiwatari during his favorite pastime, walking. During his long walks, he finds the time to clear his ideas and think of new additions to make to his games. In front of the vistas from the Yamashita and Minato no Mieru Oka parks, Ishiwatari is reminded of his childhood spent in South Africa, and how this scenery is different from the overly urban Tokyo.

The guy deserved respect like Kojima. He was among the most dedicated and passionate about gaming design.
Daisuke Ishiwatari= Rock & Roll Hideo Kojima
Toshimichi Mori = Discount Hideo Kojima
in eastern countries many people are dedicated and respectful i dont think its just these directors its in their culture as a whole.
just taking public transport or walking around in taiwan is so nice its a stark contrast to west europe..(and then west europe is a stark contrast to east europe where everything was basically a dump in my childhood)
I know I'm late to say this but why are you speaking in past tense?
Is that why he barely balanced Xrd and made Strive into a generic fighting game?
@@Siberianhusky89 yes
This is a true case of a multi talented person. He is an excelent illustrator, musician and game designer. And besides he is good at managing a business.
But he's not. MBAs take note: you will never be Ishiwatari; that's why you majored in BA in the first place.
Is what I wanted to be when I grow up
I'm 27 and I hope I approach anything near this
Or beyond
@@countrybluegrass What?
MY HERO Daisuke Ishiwatari
Mine too
Same
"OUR" Hero
Well nowadays, he's not.
Our hero ✊🏾
Regardless of whatever situation he finds himself in, whether good or bad, this guy has my support. Never in my life have I ever seen a fighting game with so much soul and dedication as Guilty Gear
He's definitely awesome. I loved the end when he talks about his favorite words. Also, I'd say there's a lot of soul and dedication behind Smash Bros. as well. Can't say whether there's more than in GG since I've never played GG but the Director behind Smash kept testing the Wii U version despite his injuries during development.
I fully agree!
@@moses3167 aha I thought about Smash too. Weird how some games convey so much the passion and dedication the guys making it have. Sakurai and Ishiwatari seem to be pretty similar workers.
It's the kind of game that when you're playing it, it's nearly as if the creator was there with you while you play and you're both having a lot of fun.
Still think kof is the best but guilty gear is definitely fun
@@monstersinthecity i think kof improved the genre and Guilty Gear is the proof of that
Daisuke is nothing less than amazing, not often a director is so involved with the actual process of game development instead of just overlooking the production.
Hoping one day you'll be able to get an interview from Yoko Taro.

@@TidusplZUO Hahahaha! oh, this was beautiful!
thank god he's still young! this guy is amazing
He does EVERYTHING
Yeah and don't forget hokuto no ken on atomiswave great fighting game respect!
That means more cool games to come from Mr. Daisuke! ^_^
I just remember His music comp on 1999 with Trash Metal Influence. And in the last few years, he handles the development, really brutal.
Young? At 40? .... Hmm...
he seems like such a humble person. definitely one of the most talented game developers out there.
I wouldn't call it "talented" but more like a "hard worker" person, he trained hard for every skill he has, and he is a perfect example that a human can do anything he wants as long he work hard for it.
I have mad respect for Daisuke, The early Guilty Gear entries show an extraordinary balance of all of his skills as an artist from illustration, musical composition, and game design in such a well executed and realized manner for someone who was so young at the time.
Thats a lot of skills.
It is indeed!
This is great. I love the Guilty Gear and Blazblue series even though I suck at fighting games, I really like its lore.
Thank you!

Obrigado(thanks)
Any Japanese Phonetics available for this video or is it coming soon??
Obrigado!
Probably the only fighting game director I can confidently call an auteur, not to shit on other directors or games but he really turns everything he works on into something that's distinctly him, I don't think Guilty Gear as a series could even continue without him and still be Guilty Gear
5:57 omg Chipp being the self proclaimed president of his kingdom in South Africa makes so much more sense to me now!
I'm really glad this video exists. Very good insight from the man himself.
Thank you!
My goodness, this series certainly deserves more attention. Wonderfully-shot, very intriguing with regard to the content, and generally an entertaining and relaxing watch.
Thanks for your support!
Thank you for your great content!
Daisuke's guitar has the Sol Badguy colors :D
Or maybe...the other way around, huh
@@Deep_wolf SOL BASED OF GUITAR [CONFIRMED 100%]
@@GlassJoe-fgc Sol IS the guitar
This guy is so multi-talented, it's insane!
He made one badass game. At first, I couldn't get into GGX, because I couldn't understand it at the time. Then, he made Xrd with the perfect graphics, I just couldn't resist. Bought the game dedicate some time, understood the mechanics and now Im a loyal fan of the series.
I got into GG with Rev 2
It has brought joy to my life
Yes! just yes! I love gg too! its been really special to me, I even finished xrd when I needed it most :) perfect game for me :) aksys and arc system works forever.
ありがとうございます!
Hah! At 8:00 you can see his headphones. They're Denon AH-D2000 headphones, which are fantastic... but like all D2000s, his are broken at the hinge that connects the ear cups to the headband. He liked them well enough to tape them together, i guess. That's pretty great.

My mans looked up and thought
"gonna name that one Sky Should Be High"
It was a banger, it still is actually
Based Ishiwatari and Mori, I love Guilty Gear and BlazBlue so much. Thank you for your work and passion!
Jotamide me Too i can't wait to Play blazeblue cross tag Battle
This dude is a master mind. inspirational creator and ive been a fan since the very first GG game. Love his music too. I'm so GLAD Bandainamco used his teams magic for that new DBZ fighting game dropping next year
Insanely talented individual.
I'm definitely looking forward to the future of Guilty Gear and what else comes out of that big brain of Daisuke-san!
I use to be a huge Street Fighter fan back in the day, and while I still like the series, I feel like the soul of it is gone, and Street Fighter 5 didn't impress me one bit. I feel like Daisuke is picking up where Yoshinori Ono has left off, and that Daisuke is doing something new and dynamic to the fighting genre. Here's to the future!
Gxyz222 I used to be a fan of Capcom but I don't anymore with the direction they're going. Yes, I do agree that Arc System Works is going to pick up where Capcom failed, making games more complete. Don't forget Platinum Games, Tango GameWorks, IntiCreates, and SNK is going to do the same.
BRIDGET PLZ IVE BEEN WAITING SINCE 2014
This dude make a freakin' cornerstone of my teen years and the persistence I got learning how to play fighting games like Guilty Gear and Blazblue (the hard way) certainly helped to make me who I am today. Thanks Daisuke!
thank you for this interview
You're welcome!
How can you have the honor of making video with him? So you guys live in JP?
This is one of the best men to ever live, respect creatives.
he is my hero forever
ありがとうございます!ishiwataris sol is my best hero.
Ishiwatari Daisuke is simply put a genius. All my respect to him for his awesome work.
This guy is a GENIUS!!
Such a talented individual! Thank you so much for all you've given us. Hope he continues to create!
5:23 What a respectful sign!
Daisuke is amazing. He is pretty much all I've ever wanted to be. But at age 31, I'm still so very far away... But I will find my own way in life... eventually.
I just wanted to find out more about the guitarist from Guilty Gear. Instead I left with motivational lifetime worthy advice.
Daisuke Ishiwatari is my one of the most favorite game creators! He inspires me!
And Guilty Gear is one of the most favorite series for me! I hope, that I will create something like Daisuke what will like such many people!
Daisuke is cool guy :) thanks for GG series!
A true renaissance man. Guilty Gear FTW
ありがとうございます!sws.
Ishiwatari is god a little bit.
True
Thanks!個人用。
Thank you for this. I am a huge fan of Ishiwatari's work and I treat Guilty Gear as if it were my favourite band periodically releasing music that I will probably come back to for the rest of my life.
Thank you sooooo much for this episode. I never thought you will get yoko for an interview..... I love his work and it was great to hear his thoughts and opinions!!!
The interviews are good, but the Japan imagery is what I really like about these videos
i wonder in forever want to see ishiwatari and mori in ggxx and blazeblue. kind like that a my finally idea i had i see.
4 years has passed of this interview and GG strive is coming! I play the beta and as always, the game is so marvelous! Still having that escense of the first GG and a great evolution of his battle mechanics.
And also the music and lore is awesome.
This is how a fighting game must evolve, daisuki as always doing a great work and his work team too.
Good job Taco Taco TV, we really appreciate you guys' effort in these videos.
This was a great interview!! Thank you so much for doing this!! :)
5:56 Daisuke Ishiwatari is African?! WHAT?!?! I am blown away...
Happy Birthday Lord and Saviour Daisuke we are hyped AF for the new Guilty Gear game.
The man, the myth, the legend. Thank you for highlighting one of my childhood heroes.
Thanks for watching!
I admire this guys productivity, Something i aspire to achieve.
A true Renaissance man.
Beautifully done - thank you so much 🙏
His music compositions and games are so cool!
Artist, Musician, game designer & even some voice work. That's honestly most of the things that I want to do as "Sur-Shiner". Though my reasons why & levels of focus might be different, it's inspiring to see that there's someone who's successfully doing all of the above already. I really wish I knew about all of this sooner, because learning about/from people who are doing what you want to do helps you get there.
He's 42!!!??? He looks like a teenager.
Asian. Plus being thin helps alot with looking younger.
@@jaypond4368 I could pull off 19 still... *being 34
He is vampire like hyde and yoshiki
@@yudd4396 Couldn't agreed more, he kinda look like hyde.
Yeah, thank you Daisuke-san for making such an awesome fighting game series!
Amazing music and my favorite game. There are not many heavy metal games this is one of the best. Love it 🤘🖤
Thanks!個人用。2。
7:25 Yep Dragon Ball FighterZ is gonna be great, always felt that Tekken and Guilty Gear are DB-esque in some ways.
Great video. Daisuke is a real creative master. I hope he continues to make such inventive experiences in the future. Ganbare.
Thank you very much for this interview! It's really enlightening to get a look into the mind of a legend like Daisuke.
Thank you!
Thank You!
I've never played a guilty gear game. I don't think I would be any good, but I would like to try it out.
Japan looks like a very clean place. That always stands out to me when I watch these videos. I'm not sure if that's really the case, but everything always seems perfect and in its place. I would love to go and see for myself, but I don't know about riding on planes. Seems very scary. Enjoying Japan through these videos will do for now though. They are so good!
The game has a tutorial and trials mode. And other offline modes. You can still have fun with those, even if you don't become a master. Try it.
I can relate to this guy so much!!! great interview!!!
I've looked up to Mr. Ishiwatari as a source of inspiration ever since the first GG waaay back on the PS1. Dude has such an amazing range of talents, and everything he's put out has been nothing short of awesome.
you may know bad dream. ima wa nemure.
Pure artist, thanks to him for introducing a fighting game to me. Without Guilty Gear, i will never step up my interest on fighting game.
Kudos to you Mr. Daisuke. In my high school days this was my no.1 favorite game besides SOTN. The aderanilne rush when playing this coupled by a heavy metal soundtrack was a super treat! Thank you sir you Rock! Guilty Gear forever! ^_^
10 minutes? why couldn't this last 10 hours
Oh my god this is awesome ! Im a huge fan of Guilty Gear series : i don't if my dupport will reach Daisuke Ishiwatari-san but , from all my heart : thank you for making such a great series ! It is a fighting game with my style of gameplay and a history and characters so deep, without forgeting a 10 points music ! Seriously thank you !
Man, I wish the video kept on going. Thanks for the peak into your world.
Shout outs to Daisuke growing up in my home country. Just makes me love his work even more. Can't wait for Rev 2. :)
Man this video from 2016. Wish i wouldve seen it way earlier, oh well at least i came across it now and im subscribing now.
Never too late :)
The Quintaessential Renaissance Man.
Ishiwatari is a huge inspiration.
I love how he is so hands on with the game. He is in charge of the elements that really capture the project's vision and he relies on others to help him complete that vision. Reminds me of Director Robert Rodriguez.
they deserve all the success they're enjoying at the moment. every bit
I'd love to see the arc system works office and take memorable photos. Even from outside.
An artist's passion oozes out of his work. Damn Guilty Gear has some of the best if not the best character designs in all of entertainment. Just by looking at them you can see what their personalities are. The music is top tier as well, lore is great and the mechanics of the games are so good.
vraiment épuré et affiné les nouveaux Toco Toco j'adore. Bravo Anne et Alex ! Les plans sont toujours aussi captivants et mettent en valeur la personne et son univers. Continuez comme ça, c'est un vrai bonheur de vous regarder !
Daisuke is a true badass
This man is my everyday inspiration!
amazing talent, he draws characters, write screnario, compose tracks.
Fantastic little video. Thanks for making it happen to your staff and of course, Ishiwatari-san.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for All Master Daisuke!
Glad this got reccomended to me even 5 years later! I'm not able to play Guilty Gear or any video game on my own because I can't afford it, but I have been watching some Guilty Gear content because of Strive. What I love about it the most are the art and character designs, and also the music. Daisuke is such an inspiration for a wannabe artist like me, I hope he can continue making games for as long as he wants.
Awesome Queen - Jazz T-shirt! :D
Well, he IS a big fan of Queen after all. Sol Badguy was basically Freddy Mercury minus the gayness.
I am a simple girl
I see guilty gear
I smash the click button
Incredible profile on a true Renaissance man!
A true living legend... an inspiration to fallow! Daisuke ROCKS!
(on a side not not starting this video with an insane riff from daisuke was a huge fail but overall I loved the video haha)
thank you Daisuke, your works really inspired me so much in my life
I love this series, the scene is beautiful and sometimes calm but i cannot bear to watch cause sometimes it looks too stressful and sad at the same time, please cheer up the tune more, games are fun and this creators do what they love the most but idk something just felt off, or is it just in japan or this industry is not what i've been imagine. But, real big thanks for the episode, big fan of Daisuke Ishiwatari and his works :)
Thanks for the kind word!
holy moly what a great thing! I used to love playing GG when I was younger!
Also, I really love the direction this episode went, it was very relaxing and peaceful. Thank you so much for sharing!
aside from seeming like a respectable and skilled person, he also is quite handsome x_x
Time to watch this video.
