Yoshitoshi ABe is an illustrator, who also works as a mangaka, character designer, scriptwriter, in addition to teaching in university. He is renowned for his work in character design on iconic anime such as serial experiments lain or NieA_7, he is also the author of Haibane Renmei, a manga which was also turned into anime.
We will first follow ABe to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Achitectural Museum, which features an outdoor display of real-size traditional Japanese buildings, where ABe practices his recent passion for photography. He explains his struggles on the medium compared to the illustration process.
ABe will then take us to the Jindaiji Temple and Botanical Garden, before telling us more about his 25-year long career and the encounters he made along the way.

I love it when creators talk about their creative process, but I absolutely adore the other 75% of the stuff they do get to that point. Highlighting walks, favourite sites, and hobbies are what makes toco toco so special. It's the experience that builds character in creators' works, and it shows plenty in these videos.
LET'S ALL LOVE ABe!
ABe ABe ABe ABe ABe!
ABe ABe ABe ABe ABe!

Present time
Years 1995-2004 were the golden age of entertainment art. When nobody had any experience back then, and executive ppl were not afraid to take risks.
Now, too many artist on the market, too many money, everybody is overthinking things... You can't break as easily into the industry. It's sad because it just don't let happy accident happen.
true
Well said
I think now more people can have access to this art. And it always have been hard to find job as an animator/illustrator.
If someone thinks that now is sadder just because someone can have the possibility they couldn't have, thats just selfish. It's sad that since always there are some people that couldnt fulfill their dreams. But that didnt change, the world of art it's still moving because there are a lot of things to discover and that's why if u like art u shouldn't care how much people are in "the industry", and just focus in the good things this era of art is bringing us
I desagree, as an 3d artists I' ve seen the market grow so much after this recent years, you can see projects very unique like Primal, death and robots, Rick and Morty, Scissor Seven, growing in the market now with tecnology because it is getting easier to do with a few people, more independent projects are rising, and companies are trusting in the new, because of that we are getting a lot of new +18 shows, even in anime.
lmao i guess weve arrived at the cultural place where those years are noe the 'golden period', pretty funny how i remeber people saying exactly the same about previous years about 10 years ago
Ah, ABe's works always have that sweet melancholic and nostalgic-like feeling to them, I love it so much.
Thank you for that video, it is always great to get to know your favorite artist more.
Thanks for watching!
Yoshitoshi ABe ❤
He's just great tho. His art is dreamlike, ..so personal
This man is a legend. Haibane Renmei was magical and thought-provoking, I still think about it a lot 7 years after last watching it!
I think I listened HR OST at least thousand times.
@@SciFiMangaGamesAnime same. Ailes Grises fills me with undescribable kind nostalgia and sadness.
This guy went on a tear that included lain, renmei, texhnolyze, and nhk. Insane🔥
I left a like as soon as I read Yoshitoshi ABe, and was not disappointed. Excellent interview with an exceptional artist. This July will be the 20 years anniversary of the masterpiece serial experiments lain.
Glad you liked it!
1998 I went to suncoast video and picked up the first VHS volume of Serial Experiment Lain series, and I loved it ever since.
His drawing are captivating unlike any other mangaka.
im thankful to be able to watch serial experiment lain thank you so much for the hard work
SEL is a masterpiece
He has stored Despera inside of him. It hibernates there.
He sounds like he ran on a tank of luck during his early illustrator days.
Dam Jackass plus mangakas get paid as low as $100 a week ( these guys will have to live off of ramen for a long time ) but they say that the artist inside of them is satisfied. Some of the artists even go to hospitals because of exhaustion or hyperventilating. They work for hours and hours non stop it’s rigorous work but the outcome is amazingly beautiful.
@@yofu2969 that is if you're manga dosent sell, if it really does sell well then you can make millions in a period of a decade (of course I'm talking about the top 20 richest mangaka
@@livetochange974 it's a very hard field of work it's very hard to even get published so even living on ramen might not be possible
I love his artwork and lain will always have a special place in my heart
Very based, very nice. I agree
English and French subtitles are available under the "CC" menu. Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish subtitles have also been made available through Community Contributions, which are also open for additional language submissions. Thank you for following toco toco!
Español porfavor
Spanish please
Russian subtitle on "project deck" translated as "черновые наброски" (6:51) is doubtful. Because "черновые наброски" usually means draft drawings while Yoshitoshi saw just brief. Just change "черновые наброски" to "описание персонажа", it would be better.
Thank you from France !
Класс
Omg this guy was my favorite ever since I saw his illustration for lain as little kid in a indie video rental store
A long for a day when there's an anime that can properly replicate his style. The clean and crisp look of typical anime is kinda at odds with his characteristic grimy and run-down style.
that part about remembering the dream rather than creating art was so spot on
Right? And also in my case, the exact same thing applies to writing.
YES! ABe is one of my favorite manga artists and my inspiration, great work guys
Thank you!
8:38 I like how when they were working on Serial Experiments Lain, they were told to also work on a happier project (NieA_7) so Lain doesn't depress them too much. lol
How does one make such a big hit working for the first time? He came up with lain without knowing what the hell he was even doing...
Yoshitoshi Abe is such an inspirational artist I love him
I loved the tip he gave at the end to keep your idea that didn't work out at that time and bring it up when a new opportunity comes. Great way to see and think about opportunities 🌸
A lovely piece of work, the producers of this short documentary created a fantastic atmosphere with the color grading and the background music. Contemplative, relaxing, and an insight into an interesting and talented person.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for the documentary. Too long society waits until after great artists die that we only then value their works. His art is so unique and original and it's a treasure you were able to capture this while he is alive.
i still rewatch Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze and Haibane Renmei
Yoshitoshi ABe your a legend
Easily one of my biggest inspirations and favorite artists. Love this guy, I can’t imagine being able to take a university class from him haha.
He talks about other illustrators mostly enjoying the art? I'm just an engineer. Let's all love Lain.
One of my favourite Japanese artists out there I just love the way he draws characters and the colours too, having this warm vibrant feel and also cold look to them as well. Not to mention they just so beautifully abstract too.
I'm here still rewatching Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, and Texhnolyze at least once a year. I never got around to niea under seven, but I will soon. Honestly, anything with ABe's involvement always turns out to be a favorite of mine. Thank you for this episode. I can only keeping looking forward to the Despera anime being released someday.
Niea_7 is one the best anime I've seen

Wish i could meet him someday, he and lain kinda changed my life.
Great work as always guys
Thank you!
I hope one day you guys manage to interview Chiaki J Konaka, it would make for a really fascinating interview.
I love the sound of Japanese , it just sounds so wonderful.
Thank you so much for this portrait!
His work really inspired me. Actually also led me to pick up sketching.
When I was 16 Lain was my very first non kids anime and it blew my mind. Haibane renmei and texhnolyze are also one of my favorites. Especially when it came to the character design.
To me he always seemed this mysterious person, it was hard to find something out about him. It's nice to hear him speak directly now. Thanks again!
Superb as always Archipel, one of my favorite Japanese illustrators but I felt a bit sad when he said at 10:14 "it was a time when we could do such things"
shaggun he's talked about it in the past. It's part of the reason we havn't seen Despera and likely won't see it. The market doesn't have the time or money to give things a chance (minus maybe Netflix).
I love the insight on "Photography Composition". I can relate to that 100%. Studying composition never actually helped me take good pictures, despite knowing other people without a composition background that could still take decently composed pictures. It makes a bit more sense now.
his art is just..so good
Played a huge part on why I'm still such a huge anime/manga fan... his artwork has an unparalleled mysterious and etherial quality to it that just made me follow his works and content as best as I could back in Lain and Texhnolyze days. It's among the authors that I brought back several artbooks and collections back from a trip to Japan, because they are just a joy to look at.
Congrats to the channel for the always great interviews and content, plus nabbing this one. :D
Just got done watching Lain, so this interview came at a perfect time for me as I found myself inspired by the work myself. Thanks, this was a delightful watch.
Thank you for this interview, I remember seeing Lain and Texhnolyze when I was in university.. it left a great impression on me at the time and still does to this day :)
Thank you so much for this. Knowing how ABe-sensei thinks is really important to me as a character designer. He was one of my first inspirations, and his work helped me to improve my own technique immensely. Also, your sneaky additions got audible gasps of surprise from me! Stellar work, both interview and composition-wise.
These videos from this channel are one of a kind.
man when he talk about how he make Serial Experiment lain, niea 7, haibane back to back in such a short time doesn't it sound like they can do anything back than? all original anime like that
which probably can't happen nowadays unless you are really big name (Despera ;____;)
Well, Despera had other problems, namely the health problems and eventual death of the other party sadly. :(
@@nagi603 RIP nakamura
I was lucky to see him a year ago in Belgium (Retro MIA). I keep preciously his autographed drawing of Lain
You can see the characters' souls in their eyes, so expressive and beautiful
i love these documentaries sm thank you
heavenly content.
Favourite channel on TH-cam, definitely.
Thank you very much!
He's such an amazing guy! Just out of this world! I love lain so much! The drawings made me dream of becoming an illustrator myself, so much respect for him and his amazing talent ✨🙏
I really love this channel. Thank you for making it
Thank you so much for this video. Abe-san is one of my favorite Japanese illustrators and i think i actually asked you some time ago to do a video about him (it was a long list with various Japanese creators). Documentaries like that are very precious to me because i get one chance in a lifetime to "meet" these great people (through you) so i will always treasure the existence of these videos.
Glad we could help out with this one and thank you for your support!
Truly a wonderful person. An artist in the purest sense of the word. May his works light a spark within us all.
Thank you for this wonderful interview. I love the subtle atmosphere and soundtrack. And ABe's reflecting words somehow made it even more relaxing and interesting to watch. I hope he keeps going on and doesn't let go of the Despera project..
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO You guys got a big shot this time
I am so happy I could see this interview. Serial experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei are one of my favouritest. I've been so excited to discover their author!! Thank you for your work!
The editing and style of this video captures ABe perfectly. What a fantastic interview.
Thank you!
Super true!
The comparison of the powerlines in real life to the powerline scene from the first episode of Lain is amazing
Thanks for this video, I love it because Abe's personality its very interesting to see for people who want to be an ilustrator or manga artist.
I have found a channel where I can binge their videos because I love them that much! Thank you so much 😊
Love his work, really amazing and unique style. One of my favorites
Man, I was hoping to hear more about Haibane Renmei, one of my favorites.
Your work is amazing. Thank you so much for making these in-depth, high-quality mini-documentaries. They are inspiring.
Thank you!🙏
THANKYOU!!! for this. I LOVE his works, and I'm so pleased / happy to know he is still creating. This bought a tear to my eye, literally. Bless you for making this & please pass on "続けてください" to him :)
Thanks for watching and happy you liked the episode!
Literally my inspiration for art, god I love his work
What a fantastic presentation of this iconic man and creator!
Wow, I haven't seen something so well documented in so many years, so many beautiful pictures too. Awesome video.
Old fashion of Japan. The true beauty in the old down worn things.
His view is goes deep.
So beautiful video about interesting author! Big thanks for publishing it! 15 minutes of pure eye-pleasing experience.
This is just incredible insight. The cinematography is stunning as well, I appreciate the good work, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite anime’s of all time
Thank you guys for doing this
This channel might be my favorite thing on the internet.
That means a lot to us!
The music, the sounds, it's all so peaceful and relaxing. Also it's very interesting
This video is so calming and relaxing, the scenery is so beautiful, the way it's shot is so artful in the garden, and I love Yoshitoshi ABe's works! This is a strangely soothing video.
''...after having worked on Texhnolyze, I haven't made another original project for more than ten years''.... Damn, I really liked Texhnolyze.
I love ABe-Sensei‘s Work.
Lain truly sent me on an existential crisis for like a fortnight. What an anime
Serial experiments lain on tech tv.Brings tears to my eyes.....My childhood.
Thank you. If I could only express how much I love and appreciate your efforts. I've had a difficult two years but every time I watch your content it puts me in a right state of mind. Always beautiful work.
Thank you and happy if we could help in some way, that means a lot to us!
That guest sentence was an absolute flex
Love this, really i love Lain. More than reallity ... More than magic..
A Legend.
Thanks for this.
Indeed, thanks for watching.
Abe's another one of my favorite artists! Thanks for interviewing him. =)
Thanks for watching :)
Such an inspiration !
I'm glad, he had so many people to be helped by. It's rare
Thank you for your Channel, awesome little documentaries.
Thank you!
My FAVE artist, this is it! Thanks TH-cam algorithm 🥰🥰
Glad you managed to get to the video :)
