*DISCLAIMER: Duahau and BAZ gave me some advises with some vocalists here but the final product represents MY PERSPECTIVE ONLY, not Duahau nor BAZ/
Please note that I'm using a set of Tier with some different labels to KVA but the criteria remain the same:
Very weak = Non vocalist and/or Undeveloped
Weak = Substandard
Average = Standard
Above Average = Capable
Proficient = Competent
Good = Good
Great = Great
Excellent = Excellent
Original analysis that were done by kpopvocalanalysis: Jungkook, V, JB, Taehyun, Ken, Baekho, Youngjae, Sungjae, Changsub, Seungyoon, Hyukjin, Seyoung, Rokhyun, Baekhyun, D.O., Eunkwang, Chen.
Only active singers debuted in 2012 - 2021 are displayed. Even though this is a 3rd gen ranking, some 4th gen idols are also included for reference purposes.
IMPORTANT: the “Honorable Mentions” are the ones that haven’t been fully analyzed but generally have shown an adequate amount of materials that reflect their level. The supported ranges in this tier are approximately estimated only.
The ranking is strictly based on technique, the development of one’s vocal ability so subjective and general aspects such as timbre, emotion, stage presence, stability, stamina, vocal range will not be taken into consideration.
Tiers and Ranks are listed ascendingly. The gap between vocalists in the same tier can be sizeable but overall isn’t huge.
The performances shown here are only meant to showcase vocal highlights of each singers, not the entire analyzing process. So feel free to let me know should you wish to see the specific perf(s) that led to such conclusions.

i don't understand how people say that good technique = boring vocals. just look at each of exo's stronger vocalist. each of them have a very different style and approach in singing. it's honestly so fascinating listening to baek's rasp, d.o's soothing voice and chen's powerful belts. they really complete each other.
In fact, most lane people are hyping for stylistic singing instead of real professional vocal skill.
That is why most vocally potential singers from West are also regressing.
But some are still professional vocalist and also making their own style of singing.
For example, Ariana Grande is one of great vocalist. But, she stylised her signature "Riff note" and also "yeah yeah rap". Actually, Ariana also has peculiar vocal tone color which can be easily recognized.
Charlie Puth is also making his signature with Falsetto and some music notes. But, he is more into Falsetto in singing, and also showing more interest in production part instead of vocal. I think his vocal (especially mixed) is not improving.
Same goes to Jungkook showing little improvement since 2018 when they gained global popularity.
He is also going with stylistic choice but his voice is not that much outstanding and also not noticeable one while his band mate Jimin has peculiar tone which can be recognized easily.
Although Jungkook is most agile voice among his band mates, he is still in weak vocal line among 3rd Generation male idols.
Taehyung, on the other hand has wide support range than Jungkook. But, he seems to show more interest in visual and branding instead of vocal. So, he is regressing.
But, people hyped them by calling "Vocal Kings" while they are actually not good in technical or professional aspect.

btw i'm glad they have proved to us that they have good stamina on live singing (I think almost all SM group have also proved it), like on monster performance at MMA and Kbs song festival (they sung live without any backtrack, flexing ig)..

Chen is really the best 3rd gen vocalist and the gap is huge when it comes to vocal capabilities. Exo's songs would sound bland without him. And it's insane how he just keeps on improving.

@@hwkwishsnwlwiwhs1096 Chen is definitely better up there kn the A4/Bb4 area, the gap is quite big tbh, his resonance is better, he's not pushy at all in his range while eungkwang starts pushing around A4, plus add that to his natural vibrato. And it's nor easy for a tenor to just start supporting A2s if you know what I mean, but in the other hand Eungkwang's upper register is better than Chen

Agree! I think DK also lacked some confidence and after xcalibur, he gained some and it has helped him improve a lot. Seungkwan is such an amazing vocalist and has even been recognized by Chen, himself. We, carats, absolutely love and appreciate him.

In one generation, SM really blessed us with both Chen and Wendy! They were not messing around when they formed EXO and Red Velvet! Plus, NCT is full of great vocalists too 💙💙💙
sm's 2nd and 3rd gen are really good. aespa is kinda weaker than them but still high compared to the current generation
As an NCTzen, I gotta say that their vocalists aren't really up there with the other SM groups though. Remember that they've got more vocalists than only Taeil and Doyoung. Jaehyun and Xiaojun are still good but Haechan, Jungwoo, Chenle, Renjun, Ten, Kun and Yuta are kinda just your average kpop vocalists tbh (though Ten and Jungwoo seem to be getting a lot better recently). I feel like the new unit is gonna have 1 or 2 extremely good vocalists though

Doyoung's improvement is massive. Remember how boy used to be tight, airy, pushy even on F#4??? Now he even supports A4 at times. The glow up. People need to stop sleeping on him (and Jaehyun)

Seventeen and NCT suffer from the same thing- they have a lot of members, so people don’t want to stan and aren’t interested in knowing the members. Sad because they are arguably the most talented Kpop groups objectively.

However, on the brand reputation ranking of bg, NCT is the 2nd and Seveeteen is the 3rd place, meaning they are actually well-known. Brand reputation considers media, community, participation index that is associated with popularity. But one thing you r right about is they are well-known doesn't mean people know each member, their talents deeply.

Thank you for making this video. Actually I don’t understand a lot in vocal techniques but I was happy that my favorite singer is here (D.O)
Chen's vocals are crazy his range goes from rock , ballad to R&B and the high notes are easy af for him , during the pandemic he has resolved the issues he had earlier like slight hoarseness while hitting very high notes . His recent love words performance show it well. undoubtedly he's at top in 3rd gen

@@GamesLover-sj2rs oh, I don't know much about vocal pedagogy, but I can try to explain:
Basically Tenor, Baritones and Soprano are vocal fachs basically are terms that indicates were your voice sits (low, mid, high) and were defined in opera.
Tenors is highest male voice, Bass is the lowest (male and overall) fach and Baritones are between both.
Sopranos is the highest (female and overall) voice, Contralto is the lowest female voice and Mezzos are between them.
These vocal fachs often can be identified by the singer's comfortable range, natural weight in their voice(s), passagio (where you voice change registers, I think, like chest, mixed, head).
Like I said, I don't have much knowledge, if anyone sees anything wrong please correct me
Really loved your analysis and ranking. It's rare to find such ranking videos with proper explanations based on technique. As a singer who got some training in classical music, it's so good to discover actual proficient singers amidst kpop stan culture basically calling trained and talented singers as boring and emotionless while proclaiming their favorite mediocre and bathroom singers as best because of UnIqUe VoCaLs and EmOtIoNaL SiNgInG.
And most of the times the "emotional singing" is just their voices straning 😫😫

i keep coming back to this video because seungkwan and doyoung's rankings always make me smile. i remember i got a bunch of hate directed at me for a two or three year old comment i made where i called seungkawn svt's best vocalist based on technique, but it was true then and it's still true now. his voice is just incredible, i love him. and like everyone else is saying, doyoung truly is soprano goals.. seriously he's worked so hard to improve, what a king.
wish sm would let jaehyun sing more, his voice is my favorite in nct as a whole. but they always treat their baris like rappers no matter how much potential they have so i have low expectations :( maybe one day.

The fact that these are all great vocalists and EXO’s main vocals are in the higher tiers then Suho too, it really made me proud.
I think Chen's head voice is still very consistent than a lot of tenors from what I have been hearing so far. Doyoung has a lot of capabilities. Meanwhile, to put things into perspective , BTS vocalists should start giving importance to techniques rather than style if they want to continue singing for a long time.
BTS should move to SM for a year to have serious vocal training at this point

And I'm happy pp finally can see that he ain't only the high note guy, when Jongdae has one of the most unique vocal tones in the industry and how one of the coaches said it's just so big. Like it's honey like soft clear vocals with so much power, it's so rich. His range is to die for, and his technique is chef's kiss. Like man can sing from jazz, r&b, pop, hip hop, rock to ballads and even trot. He knows how to use his voice, he sounds totally different in exo, in cbx and his solo works. Me too. I remember rumors saying that SM was against their collab and this is why it never happened. SM also said no to Kyungsoo's doing other OSTs and collabs, we know it because the artists and music producers spoke about it before in interviews or talking to fans. I'm so happy that Kyungsoo is finally leaving that company and will be able to do as many collabs and OSTs as he wishes.

Then, later 2BIC produced a OST song for one of Kyungsoo's movies or something like this. But SM gave the song to anoter singer. Anyways, you can google about it.

Disregard those misleading info, the gap between them is far not as closed as what other think. They are just over exaggerating their opinions. So even today, Doyoung is constantly improving and his techniques more enhanced than Haechan. And one of the things that Haechan is below than Doyoung is his nasal problem or improper breathing control.
Even to my untrained ears that was kinda foolish to claim so. Haechan got a pleasant and unique voice for me. But doyoung is significantly better technique-wise

Yes, I think it depends on the peoples preferences tho. There are also some rankings (vocal teacher) that ranks baekhyun higher than D.O. but Chen is without a doubt, the best. He's got an insane singing technique.

They're the best in their respective fields, so there is no need for a competition. I agree that SM produces really outstanding vocalists. They really prioritize that before anything else and I appreciate it. I buy albums to listen to their voices, not on visuals or dance. I daresay that every main vocalist of SM (be it girl or boy) is arguably the best in their respective generation.

I did stan other groups, but I keep coming back to EXO (I super love them🤧, they can never be replaced by anyone in my heart). And about ningning, she actually has really great potential. I think she'd be the best in the next coming years just give her enought time and she'd showcase her vocals (I'm sure she'll improve, +I saw her performances when she was a kid, she was incredible despite being a child with no developed technique yet). And about winter, I love the tone and huskiness in her voice. And she's only a LEAD VOCALIST in her group, when she can be a Main vocalist if she debuted in another group. I remember when I joined kpop in 2015 and found many artists and video complimenting EXO D.O. voice and many idols were chosing his voice as their favorite ♡♡ moreover, there was that list of kpop best vocalists ranking and Baekhyun, Kyungsoo(D.O.) & Chen were rookies but still could be the only rookies to rank high with the seniors . Chen in 1st place , D.O. in 2nd place and then Baekhyun. D.O. is underrated with having singing contents like OSTs , collab etc but he has one of the best vocal and deserves only the best and more hype from yall !!!!!!!

A lot of companies, such as YG, are known for having poor vocal training, yet they still have a few idols in each group that can support. The difference is that Western artists don’t even bother to take a single lesson.

Everyone in the standard tier has the potential to be higher, but they need to work on it. Look at Doyoung- at debut people questioned his place in the standard tier and now he’s capable because he worked on his placement/breath support. If he works on it he could even be capable and above like him. He doesn’t even have as much issues as Doyoung before improving.
21:42 NCT Doyoung, so excited to see how much improvement for the musical!! Even his performances during predebut are great. After he joined the company, he took many vocal classes and got praises. He is versatile, his ballads and projections are amazing. But he could sounds different for rnb, ost or covers he made. In NCT they mostly made him uses his technique for background vocals, soften the song with his more husky tone, or high note. But it's not the only voice he could do. So it's fascinating to hear his full cover/song of different genre he delivered. I know there are many versatile singers, but i just love his natural tone a lot. And with a good base, technique, breathing, it's plessing to hear. And now, with his musical debut too, what kind of side this time!

EXO vocals makes any song phenominal, so no its not generic. Oh i love No Matter too. In fact the whole album but No Matter and Runaway were my instant favorites at first listen.
