All you people that had rude comments are so uninformed and lazy. The point of these DYI's is to give you ideas and you can to build on it yourself. Great fun project! TY! Space could be maximized utilizing all for storage. Perfect for guest pillows, blankets and linens. Another option: Table that folds out when bed is closed.
I just have to share this. My sister lived in an old bungalow apartment when I was in high school. It was built in the 1920 or 30's, it had a Murphy bed that had a ring bolt on the floor you had to tether to or the bed would flip up. I assume to make it easier to lift and store. One day I cut class and went over to visit. I jumped into the bed to surprise her and the force dislodge the tether. We ended up folded in the bed against the wall. It was hysterical moment we had to fish our self around and use our legs to push the bed down and crawl out from the side. Every time I see one of these bed I laugh 😃.
Wow! Jaw dropped! This is the best idea I've seen all year! So much space saving. And the easy to get pivots were encouragingly doable. Monica is my favorite DIY master. I'd love a more substantial trim for the seam around the bed when up. Maybe a solution that can remain with the bed when down. But everything else was fully inspiring.
I like the idea of a work space too, but would use it for crafting and/or sewing. I'd use the remaining floor space for exercise equipment (yoga mat, resistance bands, etc.). I hate using my dining room table for crafting.
Love this! I've been thinking of putting a murphy bed in my small bonus room, but other DIY's looked too complicated for my skill set. This actually looked doable and affordable! As others have said, more storage could be added and the drop-down desk was a cool idea too. This basic build is adaptable to adding other features depending on your skills, but for us beginners its simplicity is perfect.
We did this in a spare bedroom utilizing an existing closet and purchasing a spring loaded queen Murphy bed kit. Well worth every penny! I would not like lowering and lifting this heavy wood frame. Ours was so easy and only one handed lower and lift. Also a lot of wasted space here. Just my opinion.

Rose Stewart-Fram. What’s weekender. I agree with the top being open. A great spot for comforters and blankets. Could also be open to put artificial plants or something on.
I came across Monica's weekender videos and was hooked. Every project is easy to duplicate and leave room to tweak for individual's needs. Monica's enthusiasm has always been in the forefront, which I miss in this one.
Very nice build. I would like like to mention that being a person with acid reflux issues, I could raise the pivot point by at least 4 inches to keep my throat above my stomach to alleviate acid reflux when sleeping. So happy to view this video.
The only problem with this, is that y’all make it look so easy that I want to start on my own project right away knowing that I’ll get myself into trouble haha.

I love it! I need to do just this in a downstairs office that hasn't been used in 10 years due to water damage that took that long to repair. 2 years ago more water damage affected the main floor, and then after a 25 month reno, there was more water damage downstairs again, so 6 holes cut in the walls to find the cleanout place in the drain. This project looks doable!

Great video! I would add a pass through opening on the inside of the built in shelf on each side of the bed for phone storage and plug ins. I would also put built in shelving all around the bed wall frame.
This is almost exactly like the one I designed. However I Incorporated a 12in work table across the width of the bed bottom that also serves as a leg when the bed is down
my husband built one and the bottom is shelving and the shelving is used as “legs” when the “bed” is down. It is ok but, man ! Is it heavy! Would definitely recommend the mechanics involved to make it easy to lift. Most guest would appreciate this so they don’t have to help and I don’t have the strength!
just have to be careful to support the end of the bed as desk support tends to be in the centre of the frame length, and the end of the bed needs support usually - I make one which stays flat when opening the bed but we still need the leg supports as we don't let it touch the floor for this reason.
Casi D yeah not sure what she was thinking with this one. Most build a desk attached to the bed so when pulled down the desk becomes the legs that support the bed. Not a fan of Velcroing trim when the execution of this. Hold could’ve been stronger, better utilized for storage and entire form and function well planned 🤦🏻♀️
You may want to check out actual woodworking channels to find real Murphy beds. Alm is fantastic, one of the best! Now of course I can’t think of anyone else but just type in “build Murphy bed” and you’d be shocked at the amount of fantastic builds with amazing explanations and demonstrations of every detail involved. I love Monica, this build however was okay and not what she normally is known for
That's what I wondered, too. I don't see any reason why not. As for other style Murphy beds, yes - there are special kits available but they aren't exactly inexpensive and unless you're really handy and have the proper tools (I'm not and I don't), you have the additional cost of hiring a carpenter or a good handyperson who has experience to install a more complicated type of kit. The other thing is that this project was low cost. Notice she used finished plywood, not some expensive overlay of exotic wood; and she used simply plumbing pipe, cap and flanges plus large "screws" for the pivoting and locking mechanisms - affordable, cheap, easy to install.
I love this!! There’s nothing wrong with how this was done because this is how they chose to do it. For myself, I too would tweak it a bit and utilize all the space on the sides. Instead of using the space above as some have mentioned, I’d move the bed up a bit higher, add a desk that can be used as the center support on the underside and add longer legs. (This would allow for a deeper depth desk). So when the bed is up, it’s a nice little office or study area. Then it’s a truly hidden bed/guest space. There are a lot of different ways to have done this but this diy video is very inspiring and helps us think of ways to add all our own ideas. 😁
Looks amazing. I've never been a fan of Murphy beds but the way you guys made it hidden looks better than most Murphy bed styles I've seen. I could definitely see the second use for the room as a home library or office space. Great job!
A lot of good ideas and techniques to make a guest room multi functional. I would like to see a video on how to modify the Murphy bed so one person can raise and lower the bed.
I would LOVE to do this in our livingroom. I can't explain the amount of joy this has brought a solution to our dilemma. I am needing a space for natural light and watercoloring, plus my sweetheart mother-in-law to come over once in a while. Huge hugs, Shana
I absolutely love this ideal and yes I'm going to do this because I need extra bedroom plus a sewing room. This is so cool and what a beautiful room it turned out to be. Its so charming as well...good job you guys!
Being an avid scrapbooker who still loves the primitive cutting and pasting, I would absolutely have to have that large desk for workspace underneath the bed. When we move to Florida (I pray), our second guest room with the Murphy bed will also be our office space. Oh yes... it will happen!
@@onarom23 Well, no. Not yet, anyway. However! We are able to winter there! Oldest son got married, future grandchildren… We have plan B! Thanks for asking! 😁
I actually wrote into the Weekender for a project pretty similar to this one in my guest room except I wanted the sides to be a closet because I use the room closet for workout equipment storage when guests come. Great video 😊
Wow - This is a great solution! And, relatively easy - the steps, the flange mechanism, all of it had my jaw dropping! And storage, too?! Amazing! I would love to have this in a room I would use as an office. It is not easy to have a full size/queen size bed for guests when one of the rooms is an office, so this is a great solution! Love your videos and personality!
Love it! Love how you managed to make it hidden too. I also think the space above the open shelf could have been utilized as a cupboard space for extra storage. Actually the huge space above the bed and the bottom sides all could have been utilized for storage.
This is awesome. I LOVE IT! This room needs to double as my craft/sewing/office! You checked all the boxes!!! It also replaces the astronomically priced "Murphy Bed" hardware which makes a Murphy Bed a non option! Thank you!! 💙💚💛🧡❤
I actually want/need to do this in my "office" we are a small 2 bedroom house so my "office" is actually the second bedroom. This is a great template. I would actually create an opening/cubby from the inside for the side tables so they can be accessed when the bed is in the down position. I would also probably put doors along the top for extra storage too. I really like how low profile this is and doesn't take up much depth space. Because it is in my office I would just put a reading chair and side table in front of the bed when it's hidden just to have more usable floor space too. Thanks for this video and build it's awesome!!
Absolutely love this design! So beautiful! So happy to see you Monica! I have had notifications about Lowe''s but didn't watch because you were not in them. Remember Lowe's if you use Monica you will have tons of viewers!
This is beautiful, I love everything about it. I need something exactly like that in my second bedroom. The rest of mine would be my craft room/office. TFS!!
I love your videos. You thoroughly explain everything and you don't rush. Your knowledge, skills, personality, and overall delivery propel you to the top of your game. I'm an instant fan!
You just made my day. I watched many Murphy bed videos, but this one was more detail & thorough with the framing. It has everything I wanted to do with my room, even down to the queen size bed. The only difference with mine was I used 2 heavy duty 5 1/2" square swivels attached where you used pipe. I would have used the pipe, but I had already bought the swivels. This video was so cool to watch. Please make more for DIY videos us GALS who do it all😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks for a practical way to do the bed without having to spend $300 on hardware. What someone does to maximize the use of space around the bed part is only limited by their imagination. Good ideas to brainstorm with on my own work in progress for an all-purpose space in my own home. 👍
The concept is great. Others more knowledgeable than I have highlighted any construction/mechanical deficiencies. My question is: if you use it as an office or workout room (inter alia) when it's not in guest room mode, what do you do with all that furniture/equipment when the bed needs to be lowered and take up floor space?
I like this idea. Couple observations (1) Would have loved to see the top of the bed are used as storage (pillows, linens, blankets etc.) or shelves. (2) Hoping to see the use of a counter weight mechanism or pneumatic arms to prevent the bed from free-falling when setting it up & have it be not as heavy to put back up.
I looked at this video MONTHS ago and thought that's a cute idea. Never intended on using it. But now after living in my house for 3 years and tackling some DIY projects the thought of a Murphy bed has come up. After watching hours of content, great content might I add the idea of spending so much on the mechanical mechanisms is a bit much. So glad that this video came full circle for me. Seems pretty low budget and easy to tackle. For those who are saying the space above the bed is wasted. Maybe you could use the side and back wall studs to support the weight of the build. Add a layer of plywood to the top to support upper shelving? Just a thought I'm not a carpenter, just another DIYer looking for ideas and this is a GREAT pocket friendly idea!! Thanks for sharing! 😁
I thought there was a lot of hidden storage potential that was over looked or not thought about during the design and build process. But that my opinion other than that a great idea.
I thought the same, I think the right side could have had some drawer storage that would be useful for guests and some shelving along the top as well could have been very nice
Quite a bit of wasted space. If you don't need this to be "hidden" you could easily make doors on the top. I would put doors on either side, so guests have a place to put their clothing and shoes.
I love Murphy beds and the hidden theme. Especially the duel purpose room. I would have it as an art/game room and a guest room when family comes to visit. Love the video! Thank you
If you are having an guest maybe once a year. This is a perfect solution. If your having guest every two weeks; or grand kids, I agree I would purchase a Murphy bed kit.
i love this. it's so practical. i like how you left space on both sides of the bed. I don't know why people don't do this. and having power outlets with an access panel. again so practical. i wondered how you'd finish it. and again with the practical. even just building it piece by piece to fit the different heights in a house. so good. thanks.
I might have the open shelves facing inward towards the bed. Then make sure there are receptacles on both sides. If you finish the whole top section with a bottom shelf, you could have a lot of storage for sheets, pillows, blankets, comforters and/or bedspreads. Lights above the pillow area would be nice. The shelves could be used for books, tissues, bottled water, lamps, vase with flowers, etc. for your guests. Under the piano hinge tables could be additional storage or a small garbage area. Adding more function to the exterior of the bed would be helpful. A desk for the room could be used that doubles as an extra support for the bed along with extra legs would be good. Framed art could be mounted above the desk. Another piece of artwork would be good above the pillows for the lights to showcase. You could use mounted string lights inside the open bed area, too. Nice concept just needs some tweaking.
I installed a pair of spring loaded garage door hinges in reverse with the galvanized pipe hinge and the possibility of the bed EVER coming down with ANY possibility of an accident and hurting ANYONE is reduced to almost NEVER. Using this install tip, a single person can open and close the bed and there are no loose eye bolts that you need to track. Cheers!
Thank you for posting this video. I know a lot of people have suggested how they would have improved on the project but this is exactly why videos like this are so inspiring - they get us thinking of how we could do it better! Let me also say you have a great presentation style, the lighting is perfect, and whoever edited this video did a fantastic job. While there may have been wasted space behind the bed, there was not a moment of wasted time on the video :-) It was 100% instructions and tips - really great job!
Love it! I agree with Huge Lunatic the spaces under the nightstands & above the bed would have been perfect for extra storage! I think it would be so cool to add a large hand painted mural or a large hand painted original picture on the bottom of the bed so that the pieces of wood that cover the seams look like a frame for the mural/picture, which in my mind gives them more of a purpose for being there instead of just hiding the seams of the bed. Hopefully that makes sense! lol!
I would love to see how to just get a bed up and stay there until it was needed. I will say I enjoyed your narration and that you built it in the room rather than a garage like all the others videos. You also stayed more focused on the bed than all the extra parts. Finally it’s the first time I saw anyone use flanges (and piano hinges for the night stands).
No comment really about the build, its not something i need or would be interested in, although it is unique. What I loved about this video is watching a couple work together to accomplish something. It was so nice to see you working together to get it done :) Your a lucky couple.
I would love to do this in my spare bedroom, so I could use it for my sewing room and for occasional guests. I would use the faux wall (underside of the bed) as a design wall for quilting. I agree that the space above the bed could have had cupboard doors and been used to store pillows and bedding, etc.
Great Video! We decided to go with the prebuilt way, it's so much faster and very affordable. We love our Murphy bed and got it with a great deal at Archic Furniture. Got free pillows as it as well. For anyone on the fence, definitely get one!
I'm totally doing this in my bedroom!!! I need an office/craft room to use far more than a bed!!! Lol, half, okay more than half the time I sleep in a lazy boy anyway, so this idea is PERFECT!!! Thabks for making this look so achievable!!! I'm definitely going to try this!!!
Neat idea, but so much wasted space. You could potentially do some mold and batten style trim to hide cabinet doors along the sides and top portion of the design
You did a superb job making this a DOABLE, not expensive, yet very attractive design. Your tutorial was almost flawless. Would love it if LOWE'S would furnish a Cut List, a Tool list, a Supply list (although it would appear that you've done the Tools in the Video description), + perhaps gauge difficulty + time? Along with a tad more fleshing-out of the steps. Would be so grateful if Monica, her builder + Lowe's would do that. I would even buy my mattress + paint, etc., at Lowe's! Thx, Monica. Great design + video.
This is exactly what I need for my new small condo! I have a second bedroom that I use as a yoga room but want to be able to have guests and have them sleep in a real bed. I'll have to show this to my son, he'll be building it!
Ditto the comments on lost storage potential. BUT a really good build and ideas I hadn't thought of before. We did a self build Murphy build a few months ago, transforming our old office into a mostly office, then bedroom for guests just a little bit. Has been great so far. But these ideas are better concerning the build. If doing again I would use the concept of framing up and maybe the hinges and temporary safety framing (which we had a lot of trouble with in our build) plus shelving with doors to access the storage above any old time. So pleased I found this video. Great start. Just the final few percent that could be refined.
I would have tried to turn that space behind the bed into a mini walk in closet. Would have been absolutely incredible to have a bed that folds vertically plus a walk in closet behind it!
Lost opportunity up across the top for storage! That would've been a great place for board games, or for the linens & blankets stuffed in laundry bags inside decorative baskets, and the pillows.
Murphy beds with fold out desks are expensive ..usually well up to 2k....this is a dyi cheapo version and I LOVE IT. I have looked at these for years and this is one clever version although I would put metal corner braces in the bottom part of the frame to prevent the corners from blowing out from the shifting weight of the mattress as it is brought up. I would add a folding desk to the wall and gladly call it my office! There are so many design possibilities with this build, storage across the top of the bed frame (book freak here) perhaps with a library rolling bar and ladder (really a book freak here)More shelving if you wanted it on either side..even cabinet doors covering a lower unit on either side to hold bedding and guest items like a bathrobe, slippers, mini shampoo's and soaps, face cloths, all in a basket of for them to take out and use. Perhaps a bottle and glasses for a night cap lol. Thanks for the idea's
I seems most people want more storage. That’s fine and very easy to incorporate. Nice idea the bed spring lift unit is $300 plus so this is a cost effective way to do it. I also like the night stand idea!!! As for storage most things stored can usually be thrown away anyway!!
The velcro molding and eye bolts don't make any sense either. This whole project seems cobbled together (which is confusing for commercial content like this)
Agreed. Not sure why they didn’t market a Murphy bed kit that can be bought at Lowe’s that would not only resolve the racking but also help with ease of conversion. Poor design which is a surprise to me. She usually does well with creative stuff like this.
Add a couple of recess lighting above the pillows would be a nice touch
bravo, to both........
the frame of the bed flexes. more thickness in the bed traverses is needed !

this video is emphasizing how you frame the bed to the fake wall. you can customize or put more storage whatever you want. :) all in all great DIY. :)

I love it. This is the exact project that we needed to see as our guest room office is the same size. Thanks.
Did it happen? :)
@@onarom23 Well, no. Not yet, anyway. However! We are able to winter there!
Oldest son got married, future grandchildren…
We have plan B!
Thanks for asking! 😁
I actually wrote into the Weekender for a project pretty similar to this one in my guest room except I wanted the sides to be a closet because I use the room closet for workout equipment storage when guests come. Great video 😊
Great idea! I also thought it could be used as an exercise room or even a game room. I like the idea of side closets there.
I was wishing the bottom sides could have been cabinets for the bedding.
This is awesome. I LOVE IT! This room needs to double as my craft/sewing/office! You checked all the boxes!!! It also replaces the astronomically priced "Murphy Bed" hardware which makes a Murphy Bed a non option! Thank you!! 💙💚💛🧡❤
Love it! This is actually what we are wanting to do with our second bedroom, so it is perfect. The other purpose of the room is a craft/sewing room.
I really like that the inside of the Murphy bed "cabinet" is painted the same colour as the wall, really makes it blend in seamlessly.
Haha right? Where would u move the desk? Or gym equipment
Diana Schofield thinking the same thing!
It appeared to have another 10 to 11 inches of dead space throughout and a huge space above.
I agree that a lot of space was wasted- above the bed space, and the side shelves could be floor to ceiling.
Quite a bit of wasted space. If you don't need this to be "hidden" you could easily make doors on the top. I would put doors on either side, so guests have a place to put their clothing and shoes.
Since one of my kids when to college, I have turned the room into a sewing room, but I still need a guest room. This is a perfect idea!
I love Murphy beds and the hidden theme. Especially the duel purpose room. I would have it as an art/game room and a guest room when family comes to visit. Love the video! Thank you
If you are having an guest maybe once a year. This is a perfect solution. If your having guest every two weeks; or grand kids, I agree I would purchase a Murphy bed kit.
finally i can hide the guests
Like Cary Grant in North by Northwest Sleeper Train!
it is meant to hide the bed not the guests
Arjun Gupta r/woosh
🤣
You might need to make the bedframe a tad deeper then 🤣 Oh, and remember to chuck 'em out afore they start smelling 😱🤣🤣
I am Brazilian and I appreciate the help now to resolve the lack of space.
I want to do it for my son when he comes to visit. I need a carpenter . Looks great
i love this. it's so practical. i like how you left space on both sides of the bed. I don't know why people don't do this. and having power outlets with an access panel. again so practical. i wondered how you'd finish it. and again with the practical. even just building it piece by piece to fit the different heights in a house. so good. thanks.
Fantastic! I can finally hide the bed for unwanted guests lol In all seriousness I love it !
Hahahh
Thanks for the straight forward build. Monica, it’s awesome to see you, you’re creative as always. A smart solution.
Great idea.
Cheers!
Amazing Monica - I would use it as an office space...
By the way, whatever else I learned from the video - spring loaded inspection panels!! Who knew??
I think this is awesome and a great start. Def would do some things different with additions and some take outs. But great starting point!!
No comment really about the build, its not something i need or would be interested in, although it is unique. What I loved about this video is watching a couple work together to accomplish something. It was so nice to see you working together to get it done :) Your a lucky couple.
Disappointing that all the space above the bed was wasted, rather than building in storage.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Huge Lunatic agree
I was very upset about above bed storage, I had to dislike this video because of that reason.
True, there could have been drawers added under the nightstands as well or cubbies for guest shoe storage.
I agree, why waste all that space. We can never have too much storage space.
Great project - thanks so much for showing us how to do a Murphy bed!
This is flipping awesome. Monica i miss your design show on here, are you making more seasons? 💖💖💖
That's very clever. Awesome job. Excellent idea for a tiny English bedroom. Thank you so much.
Wow that was amazing I wish I could convince my hubby to build me one.
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! Making the bed in my second bedroom that will double as a craft room/ art studio!
Add a fold-down desk when the bed is upright and you have your home office. Fold the desk away and you have a home gym. Great idea!!
Thanks for such an awesome video tutorial! Now I can see that I can do this myself. I have a guest room that I need to also be my sewing room. Woohoo!
Definitely one of your greatest ideas. Would make a great office space: a desk on wheels!
When is the weekender coming back?
It's not.
Trevor Phillips why:(((
Funky Tina why? Because it’s been 2 years since a new episode.
Check out homegating series!!
This is exactly what I need for my new small condo! I have a second bedroom that I use as a yoga room but want to be able to have guests and have them sleep in a real bed. I'll have to show this to my son, he'll be building it!
Just Excellent & Amazing! But just wondering how much it might cost for the entire project including the labour cost !? Thank you so very much!!!
Beautiful use of space. You're a rock star, Monica! ❤ Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. 😘
Really fantastic just what I need for a smallish living room that will double as a guest room - roughly how much did this cost?
Loved this idea. Agree that storage space was wasted with this, but this was inspiring. Need to do this in my basement home office space.
Great video for DIY projects, but the night stands and the bed feet are a little flimsy .
I seems most people want more storage. That’s fine and very easy to incorporate. Nice idea the bed spring lift unit is $300 plus so this is a cost effective way to do it. I also like the night stand idea!!! As for storage most things stored can usually be thrown away anyway!!
Nice job.
People who never built anything hating “I would have built a space station in that extra space !” Lol
You have to admit there is wasted space though...
What an awesome design and build. The pillows and paint and comforter are AMAZING !!!
Poor design, the entire bedframe twist when pulling down even with 2 person
Rightly said
The velcro molding and eye bolts don't make any sense either.
Exactly
Cuz it’s plywood and there’s no bed in it yet sooooo😑
AWESOME!! But I was so looking forward to seeing you create an above the bed storage space. That's what I would've done. JJ.
