Excellent vid. I replaced the shifter bushings today on my 08 Street Glide after watching. I did go ahead and drop the $$ on the JIMS tool, as I have no machine shop at home to make my own as some commenters mentioned, and don't really have those skills anyway. Process went smooth. That dang rattle is now completely gone. I did add a little grease to the new setup, though, just in case.
Hey Fat Head, I had the same problem with my 12 FLHTK, I searched forums for a easy way to change the shift shaft bushings. I bit the bullet and bought the tool, I was done with the complete job in about 20 minutes. Now I have the tool to do others should the need arises..It's best to have the tool and not need it than need the tool and not have it...
Awesome video!!! You are very detail oriented which is exactly what most mechanics aren’t from what I’ve seen. One mistake here and there doesn’t define you in the scope of the big picture. It’s not a mistake that is dangerous and I’m sure if it wears out more quickly, you would;lad have the decency to fix it I’m sure. great job.
Just changed mine out, thanks for the video. That tool works great. The splines on the shaft were worn bad. The whole assembly had a wobble. Not anymore! I changed out the shifter connection rod also and the rear primary shift lever.
use a metal cylinder brush on a cordless drill, you will be suprised how much crap is inside. Use Anti-Seize inside the bushing bore before you insert the bushings and bottom them out. Also, assembly lube on the shifter shaft is a good idts ea when installing the shaft. Just my 25 cent
Chris, when do you recommend changing the shifter shaft so I don't strip a spline? Had it happen once before on the interstate. I'm anal about maintenance and ride a shit ton.

In one of your replies you said that you took out the shifter shaft after realizing you didn't lubricate it, "gave it a thin film of anti sieze and reinstalled the shifter". In another reply of yours, you said "I am not a big fan of greasing the shifter shaft. Grease and never seize have the tendency to accumulate dust and dirt." Can you clarify?
Great video but I can’t help but think those bushes should of had some sort of lube put in them or on the shaft, they’ll definitely wear out quicker without it.

I have had several softails come in the the shifter would not return back after each shift. Found out that someone had greased the shaft and then over time the shaft collected dirt and started sticking. I am a wipe it clean and reinstall kinda guy. Thank you for your comment
I don't have a metal lathe, but I do have a drill and some all thread. Grabbed a couple grade8 washers and sound them down using my drill and my grinder. They fit perfect.
Great Idea. All future videos will have links in the description. As for the brass hammer, that is per the manufactures instructions. Doesnt answer your question I know. My thought is that the brass hammer is softer than the metal that the tool is made from. Keeps you from deforming the end of the tool that you just bought. Great Question.

You are 100% correct. After I was done doing the video I looked around and did not see my silver anti Sieze. Was still in the cabinet. So I too the shifter shaft out and gave it a thin film of anti sieze and reinstalled the shifter. Thank you for watching.

Mine is moving left and right basically sliding in the bore what would cause that and how do I fix it?
Sounds like the pinch bolt is loose and the shift rod has walked out of the inner shift arm.

Chris...I should've clarified...I am referring to the bushing on the front heel/toe shifter.
It’s a lot easier if you disconnect the shifter arm to get to the Allen screw holding the arm on...

why not drive the bushings in from te frontside wit the same tool you drive them out??
There is a possibility of driving them to far and the bushing coming out the back side.
U could just use a long bolt with some washers to pull the bearings in, just saying

No last long for this repair because you not apply the grease por bushing
the bushings are self lubricated, but yea I wouldn't trust it. I'd put assembly lube on it
