Ahead of the unveiling of the Rugby League statue at Wembley Stadium on August 29 hear Ray French talk about former team mate and Rugby League legend Alex Murphy
What a magnificent player was Alex. thank you Ray for giving such wonderful memories of a great player and an input to the game as it was then and how it should be today.
My old Dad, god look after him. He being a Wiganer, said Murphy should have signed for Wigan. Now that is the greatest accolade a Wiganer could ever say about a St Helens mon.
I believe scouts were trying to sign him from all over but after an u16 final, Saints took him to one of the director's houses and he signed at midnight on his 16th birthday
Alex definitely had an aura about him. I was a Leigh supporter and when he signed for Leigh in the off season, it was a long wait in anticipation of the first match, was against Widnes in the A&B motors cup friendly. I would have been about 10 years old. I remember him running out and almost not believing the moment. Over the next few seasons, he would call out the plays, decide which direction etc, he was an on field master tactician. Basically, if he did not play, our chances of winning would drop by half.
