Thanks for doing this and for putting in a way that's easy to understand. I've been learning a lot of JP songs lately, and this one will be fun to play.
Thanks sooo much, for taking the time to slowly explain how to fingerpick/perform this Prine maudlin-tearjerker-classic! May the positive energy return to you!
Yeah, that back and forth transition between pinching and finger picking is the hard part and what made Prine and Goodman so good together. Great tutorial!
awesome lessons, thanks Scott...keep them coming! Yours are one of the only lessons I'have found that actually teach in a teachable manner, than simply showcasing your skills.
Great lesson thank you. I love how u and John Prine mod the D chord. That is so cool. I will use that in other songs now. I'm an old newbie. But as they say you're never to old to start learning. I primarily play slide on a cigar box guitar, a 4 stringer in open G. But this stuff I'm playing on standard 6 string acoustic. Fortunately they are all easy chords. Thanks again you truly made my night and most likely tomorrow.
This was really helpful. I have been trying to get that opening down for a while. Doing all kinds of variations hoping to find how John Prine did it. You made it simple and straightforward. Thank you. I really appreciate your help.
Scott, Thank you for teaching this beautiful song. You sing well. It's going to be fun playing along and learning this. BTW thanks for your lessons on Travis picking too.
Enjoy your playing Scott. I dont have a guitar but am trying to apply technique to uke. I so love John Prine's playing method, not quite the same on uke though. Thanks Scott.
I play this song also and I knew that I wasn't playing it correctly...passable but not close enough to the original as I would like ...I think with this video I might be able to do just that ..thanks ...
dmagnin I have quite a few lessons on there. Thank you very much I appreciate your input please subscribe to my channel and then you can see everything else that I have done
I have been trying to figure this out Scott and now you have showed me how its done. Thank You very much. If you get time can you do Summers End? Thanks
Scott- great video. Much appreciated. Your video on learning to play Souvenirs is the best I've seen. Have you thought about doing one for Mexican Home?
Scott, nice job but I think while your picking the A7 try the B string on the 5th fret instead of the E string on the 4th fret. I think it sounds more proper??
This is really great Scott! I'm working hard at your finger picking lessons and also trying to learn Souvenirs with you. You say in this lesson that you can't really tell us the finger picking pattern you're using here. Can we assume its the same pattern as your lessons? (2,3 and 4) It may sound like a dumb question but I have way more enthusiasm than talent and it would be really helpful to confirm this.
The first part of the instruction (finishing with the D chord) was great. It was slow and detailed. However, that's where your teaching broke down. To be consistent the lesson would be more complete if you would have continued the same amount of detail with the G and A7 chords. It wasn't necessary to see what your right hand was doing while explaining the D chord, but because of your lack of verbal detail on the G and A7 it would have been more helpful to see what the right hand was doing. Thx
You did a really good job explaining the finger picking with the D chord but as soon as you moved on it was like you were just playing leisurely and not really teaching. If you could take some extra time and explain the rest of the intro, that would be really helpful
Way to take your time teaching the D chord and then blow right by the G chord and on to the A.....You're not really interested in teaching are you......and no that wasn't a question...
Thanks for doing this and for putting in a way that's easy to understand. I've been learning a lot of JP songs lately, and this one will be fun to play.
Amazing lesson. Thanks Scott.
Welcome
this is such a great lesson. thanks so much for the detail.
It’s not perfect but it gives a good idea. Thanks for the positive comment. Enjoy
I got the general idea before watching, but you completely nailed it. Thanks. Such a great song.
Awesome

Yeah, that back and forth transition between pinching and finger picking is the hard part and what made Prine and Goodman so good together. Great tutorial!
Thanks for the great lesson, Scott. You're not only are a patient teacher but you sound very much like John Prine - good job!

Best lesson of its kind - mucho appreciated.
Enjoy your playing Scott. I dont have a guitar but am trying to apply technique to uke. I so love John Prine's playing method, not quite the same on uke though. Thanks Scott.

John Prine never got his props for how good or should I say tricky his guitar playing is plus he sings doing it !
Great instructions. If you are not a teacher you should be. Just subed.
I have been trying to figure this out Scott and now you have showed me how its done. Thank You very much.

Scott- great video. Much appreciated. Your video on learning to play Souvenirs is the best I've seen. Have you thought about doing one for Mexican Home?
Please make a fingerpicking lesson your great i love this song
I find it nearly impossible to learn from vids...good as this is....I need the tab as well....
Where did you go Scot?? Got any new lessons? Yours are easy to learn.
I’m here but haven’t played much. I hope to get back to it in a few months. 😀
@@scottlarsen1855 I know the feeling I'm the same way
Excellent. Thanks!
thanks this has been a great help!
Scott, nice job but I think while your picking the A7 try the B string on the 5th fret instead of the E string on the 4th fret. I think it sounds more proper??
what strings do u keep picking when you go into G and the little walk the rest seems perfect but I need that part.
Great singin’.
Justyn McDonald thanks I appreciate it😀
This is really great Scott! I'm working hard at your finger picking lessons and also trying to learn Souvenirs with you. Thank you, this was helful
I can never follow these without tabs....

thanks..helpful
Is this how John played it or this a mix of him and Steve Goodman?
I believe Goodman capos up 2 frets then plays with c fingerings
do you have some tabs ?
You did a really good job explaining the finger picking with the D chord but as soon as you moved on it was like you were just playing leisurely and not really teaching. If you could take some extra time and explain the rest of the intro, that would be really helpful
Its kind of weird how thorough you are at the beginning and then just let it fly after the d chord.. guess i'm just not good enough to figure it out.
Good lesson up until you switch to the g chord and then you don’t explain the rest
Hunter hall it’s all the same
Way to take your time teaching the D chord and then blow right by the G chord and on to the A.....You're not really interested in teaching are you......and no that wasn't a question...
