The Emerald Isle is home to an abundance of coastal Championship links, beautiful inland layouts and world-famous hospitality, add to this the superb nightlife and numerous points of cultural and historical interest make Ireland interesting for all, and without doubt, the Irish golf break experience is truly magnificent.
Surrounding the lively and attractive capital of Dublin are numerous golf resorts offering spectacular countryside settings. If you fancy a bit of history and culture during your trip then Cork and the Blarney Stone is a must-visit along with some wonderful layouts like Old Head and Fota Island Resort. Breathtaking scenery and spectacular courses can be found in the South West, Killarney is a tranquil and serene retreat of unimaginable beauty while the likes of Ballybunion, Lahinch and Tralee provide incredible golf.
The North West coast of Ireland may be slightly remote but it provides exceptional golf, Ballyliffin and Rosapenna are great traditional links, with fantastic scenery and of course great hospitality. Put The Island GC on your list to play next time you're in Dublin. It's a classic links with excellent views. Co hosted The Amateurs with Portmarnock last summer. Only 20 minutes from Dublin Airport.
I can’t afford to pay the crazy prices for some of these courses but being from Ireland I am lucky enough to be able to play scratch cups on some of these, which is cheaper. Without doubt Waterville is the hardest, by a mile . Never played it in decent weather, always blowing a gale and often in monsoon like conditions . This course would make St Andrews look like a par 3 course. Courtesy of the mighty wild Atlantic. I have never had to play 5 iron from 120 yrds. That’s a gap wedge normally. Anyway, what can I say but wow, Waterville is out of the way but worth every minute, the original beauty and the beast. Love it.❤

Wow, this video has brought back memories of great trips to Ireland My list includes thankfully 3 mentioned by the guys. Waterville, County Sligo, and my favorite, The European Club. Favorite as much because of the course and the guys that run it. Pat Ruddy and his two sons. Absolutely love it!. Played it a few times and got to know the guys there. A close second is Waterville. When you play that course you are as one with nature. Just pure peace!.
County Sligo because I played it in about 30 knots of wind and scored an 81. Ballybunion is a brute. It killed me. Last of all is Lahinch. Another great course. There are so many more. Problem is that it is not always the course that you remember. It may be other attributes that make it stay in your mind.

Waterville yes…my favourite course in the world . Played it in 2005…it replaced Royal Birkdale 1987.
I’m from the Melbourne sand belt 4 handicap… in Melbourne…Metropolitan.
Going in June and already booked Potmarnock and K club can’t wait

Yes very hard to pick 5 and hard not to include Royal County Down but that just shows how many top courses there are. Even if you were to pick 5 that most people (outside of Ireland) haven’t heard off then you would still have 5 top courses.

If visiting Ireland play Links golf there are a lot of brilliant links courses way to many to mention just come and enjoy

Carne golf links in Co. Mayo is one of the best.

Carne golf links, played it only once, a fantastic place, great golf course, a bit of a drive but well worth it.
Agree, Carne is epic. When you go, add in Enniscrone, Co Sligo and Strandhill - that was our trip 2 years ago.
As great as I thought Carne was when I first played there, it was even better when I played the new Kilmore 9 last week. Just an amazing set of 9 holes. Pair those with either of the Hackett 9s and it's hard to beat. I didn't play the "Wild Atlantic Dunes" configuration that takes holes from both of the Hackett 9s and the Kilmore 9 to make 18. If I had, I might never have come home.
Enniscrone, Lahinch, Galway Bay, K Club Ryder cup course, the Island
Played a few in Ireland we had the Irish Rugby boys come to Porthcawl back in the day and a certain British & Irish Lions Rugby International (later President of the Irish Rugby Board) broke 100 in under 90 mins drinking a bottle of beer on every tee for a bet. We were crazy in those days! Try that sometime when your bored of shooting under par at your home course! Loved Killarney they never let us go home to sleep and agree with P.Mcg Watervill takes a lot of beating but my fave is Portmarnock.

Only played half a dozen in Ireland. Adding both Ballyliffin this year in June (hopefully)

Played Ballyliffin, both courses, this year and last year. It is a corker and Donegal is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Hope you make it.
Sane Eric played Donegal Links last year , great course. Kept coming up short on approach shots, to the great amusement of my playing partners, who forgot to tell me the distances were in metres.
andrew johnston ah yes the old yards / metres trick. Played Donegal a few weeks ago, really enjoyed and a spectacular location.
Sane Eric I think every other course I played, was technically in the North, so they gave both yd’s/metres. I learned quickly though, only took me 3 holes. But the old Murvagh winds on the far side did me nut in. Great place. Also played Lough Erne, Slieve, Portstewart, Old and new, Ballycastle and CastleRock I think it was. Great time had.
Thought Paul would mention his own design, Macreddin. Far more dramatic than Mount Juliet.

I haven't played it so can't comment on it being one of my favorites. Perhaps Paul has yet to play there too? Not sure.
Old head is in a cool spot. Layout is not good. Nothing interesting from shot value. Just a tourist trap.

@@alanhammond4098 yes I would put money on it…just incase you are geologically uneducated the Republic of Ireland is not part of Great Britain hence meaning it can’t have the open. It’s like saying Canada is going to host the US open 🤦🏻♂️
