  • What's it like to fly United Ultra Long Haul? Join me as I review the 777-300ER in Premium Plus from Los Angeles to Sydney. Overall, a rather underwhelming experience with United. The service was lacking, food was embarrassing and the delays and cancellations were very frustrating. The seat however, was nice, as were the amenities that United had on offer to Premium Plus passengers. Is it worth the upgrade? Yes, certainly. Not for the service that United offers, but simply for the extra space you have. 16 hours is a long time to be in the air, but this seat was light years ahead of economy. United charged us $399 to upgrade from standard economy to Premium Plus, a great deal considering what airlines charge for premium cabins.

16 Hours and 7500 miles of flying , they put you up, fed you through a cancellation, It even seems that you had a nice crew, decent seat, and in the end we judge the overall airline service based on the fact that you didn't get scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast.

It’s a decent seat. Lots of leg room. I had to take this plane recently on a 16 hour. Flights are really quite overpriced right now. I used to fly business a lot but prices are just killer. Even when I use miles it’s a pain to use so much more than I used to

I always appreciate when a pilot gives the flight itinerary details on the microphone like that !

This is one of the reasons that YT reviews are useful. My priority for a long flight is leg room and comfortable seat. If I know in advance the food is going to be lacking, I would buy before boarding

Pretty surprising to me. I flew HNL-DEN last November on Premium Plus, on a 777 as well and i received two hot meals for dinner as well as breakfast, despite the flight being only 6+ hours long!

From someone who used to fly very frequently, a good trip report. The lack of hot breakfast on that long of a flight in premium is somewhat surprising. I'd expect a hot breakfast in economy on a flight that long. Flying US versus international carriers is interesting in that the priorities are different. I will probably do Premium Plus if the fare is decent but I want that for space considerations alone and don't have high service expectations. I was a 1K in 2018 and Platinum in 2019 and just was notified of my Gold status for as United didn't extend my old status so I have my 1 Million Miler status. It is sort of liberating. I will probably start flying British in Club to London and Swiss in Business for my other trips. I will now book based on price, hard product and service without regard to carrier or alliance. Reports like yours help me plan future trips.

Thanks for another awesome trip report, Sam! Sorry to hear about the cancellation and missing a day of your trip but at least they put you in a hotel where you hopefully did some spotting

As a Delta FF for over 10 years, my preferred carrier on the SYD/LAX route was Virgin Australia, especially after they updated their Biz Cabin (1/2/1 vs 2/3/2) on their 777-300ER in/around 2015. It's a shame they liquidated their 777s, as VA is now a domestic-only Australian airline. I will miss VA's international crews and cabin product, especially the in-flight bar at the back of Biz Class.

Thanks foir sharing the video. We save up our upgrades for the long-haul flights. We did United to from SFO to New Zealand and Singapore Business Class and it was great. But, that was in the pre-pandemic days. By next fall we should be back up in the air.

When I saw your hotel room I was like “wait, I know that room!”. I work at that specific hotel. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

Flying any US carrier is always going to be disappointing if you have previously travelled on some of the Middle Eastern and Asian airlines.

My golden rule when flying is to avoid all US airlines when going international. Why be subjected to crap service if you have a chance to experience good services on airlines like Qantas, Air New Zealand, Singapore, Japan Airlines etc.

Golden rule when flying United long haul is either choose the Economy+ exit row seat in the over-wing portion of the aircraft (where there's tons of space) or Polaris business class. Indeed on my last trip to Sydney (pre-pandemic) I flew London Heathrow to Sydney (via Los Angeles) booked in Economy but then did a points upgrade to Polaris business for 35,000 miles + $600 in co-pay. Best part was the whole journey ended up getting upgraded to Polaris business class meaning I was in a Polaris seat for 25 hours + 5 hours at the Polaris lounge at LAX. Oh and the copay actually earned PQP towards my MilagePlus status.

"Premium Plus" is not actually premium despite the name. It is just economy class with a bigger seat and more leg room. Hence the food being mediocre. All the premium economy products are like this in the United States. For a long haul trip like this it's not a bad proposition, but it's also not really luxury either.

Great video! Loved the sound from the engine start up and takeoff. Yeah…. For long haul international flights, I usually fly foreign carriers.

Thanks for sharing your trip. I flew the Premium Plus across the Atlantic in December and had the same conclusion: comfortable seat but food was sad.

I believe your misunderstanding derived from thinking your food options would be significantly upgraded in Premium Economy but that really isn't the case with most airlines. Also, keep in mind that even some Biz meals can be pretty disappointing.
