I have to give you mad props for this video tutorial. I've been looking online for a way to combine the chords with the melody and you hit it on the point!! Very good tutorial...this song has become a lot funner to play now!

Nice 1,great lesson,your right its an irish song,played by the poguse ,the dubliners,and more,it may not be irish written but we made it our own,i enjoyed ur lesson,you make it look easy but im only playing that song an hr or 2 but il practice

Sorry to nitpick but this song was written by Ewan MacColl who was very, very Scottish! Admittedly, The Pogues (Irish) covered the song. And to add to international confusion, the "dirty old town" was Salford, a suburb of Manchester, England!
No offence taken, always happy to learn stuff like this. The music, however, really seems to have that "Irish" feel
phil coombs .....you are correct. there are many sangs in ireland that are scottish or english. adopted by the irish folk bands that started out in the early 60s due to their limited repertoire then.
@@first_fret maybe you should research these sangs before you label them as irish.
@@brucecollins4729 You're quite right........ and there has been much cross-over between Ireland and Scotland or England over the years. The O'Carolan tune Mrs. McDermot would be known as Princess Royal by English Morris dancers. And how many songs are there about the lady of the manor running off with a gypsy from those three countries?
The ultimate irony is that 3 or 4 years ago, Salford won an award for being the "greenest" city in England. Oh that Mr. MacColl was still around to write a revised version of his song!

You are wrong this is not an Irish song. This is an English song about a town called Salford in Manchester England so am I paid to say this is an English song generally sung by Irishman

Ewan born and bred in Salford to Scottish Parents . The song is about Salford where he grew up Englishman of Scottish descent.
We gave the English oasis, the smiths, the Beatles, dido , Kate bush, boy George, John Lyndon , dusty Springfield, Robbie Williams, to name a few can we please have dirty old town 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️😂😂😂😂😂
Who’s John Lyndon? 😂 And yes, there are many musicians of an Irish background who were born in England who have managed to merge both Irish and English cultural backgrounds to make great music, just like Ewan MacColl (real name James Henry Miller) managed to merge the Scottish roots of his parents with his cultural experiences of being born and raised in Salford, England. And as an aside, I am forever indebted to Irish folk musicians for keeping the torch of not only their own folk music alive, but also English folk music too. Without The Wolfe Tones and The Dubliners (amongst others) English folk songs like Dirty Old Town and Black Velvet Band would have been lost to the mists of time. Also, listen to Shoals of Herring by Ewan MacColl and then listen to The Irish Rover to see the influence. I know it’s not fashionable at the moment, what with the Americanisation of Irishness and the promotion of victimhood, but Ireland and England are inextricably intertwined through our common cultural connections.
@@peterose2054 not forgetting the scottish sangs and fiddle reels adopted by the irish in the late 50s early 60s when irish music was just starting having adopted the lively/fun style.
