phil coombs .....you are correct. there are many sangs in ireland that are scottish or english. adopted by the irish folk bands that started out in the early 60s due to their limited repertoire then.

And how many songs are there about the lady of the manor running off with a gypsy from those three countries? The ultimate irony is that 3 or 4 years ago, Salford won an award for being the "greenest" city in England. Oh that Mr. MacColl was still around to write a revised version of his song!

Who’s John Lyndon? 😂 And yes, there are many musicians of an Irish background who were born in England who have managed to merge both Irish and English cultural backgrounds to make great music, just like Ewan MacColl (real name James Henry Miller) managed to merge the Scottish roots of his parents with his cultural experiences of being born and raised in Salford, England. And as an aside, I am forever indebted to Irish folk musicians for keeping the torch of not only their own folk music alive, but also English folk music too. Without The Wolfe Tones and The Dubliners (amongst others) English folk songs like Dirty Old Town and Black Velvet Band would have been lost to the mists of time. Also, listen to Shoals of Herring by Ewan MacColl and then listen to The Irish Rover to see the influence. I know it’s not fashionable at the moment, what with the Americanisation of Irishness and the promotion of victimhood, but Ireland and England are inextricably intertwined through our common cultural connections.
