I ordered a roll of similar faux-neon that has three color LEDs. The colors can be selected individually or in combination to make a variety of colors or a pretty good white. The minimum distance between cuts is about 24 inches though. Fascinating stuff. Soon we will be seeing it in use everywhere I suspect.
Oooh.... That would be lovely with the individually addressable tri-color LED strips. With a controller, that could make animated signs that are much more complex than traditional neon signs.

My mate's dad had apprenticed in Europe and said that when he was learning glassworking, he'd have barrel of failed glass at the end of the day. I can remember the glassblowers at the Standard Oil chemical lab building all sorts of intricate lab equipment...
Man a BigClive video in above 480p. For the last 18 months I've ben using my phone. Were 480p is all I get. For about 30 seconds I can watch 720p I save that 30 seconds for reverse engineering schematics. I woke this am turned on my 55 inch TV and watched BigClive in 1080p also in the box next to me (middle of moving) is a big live coaster I'm almost ready to sodder/solder it. Sitting next to that box is my soldering station, and standing on that box is my boxer😁 (dog). Have a good one sirClive. Cheers.
A lot safer than the traditional neon sign in a local cafe with totally exposed tubes and wiring. I´m told its forty or fifty years old and it works perfectly. Oh and at its lowest point it is about head height if you sit on the nearest chair, and there are no warnings.
Perhaps an alternate theory on why they put the "split" at the center of the "M" is that the lengths are pre-cut for assembly and they just grab a set of pre-cut lengths and assemble them in the channel. It'd be interesting to line up the LED Strips side by side and see how close they are to each other in length.

Funny, this showing up in my TH-cam feed the day after I saw a theatrical production with a massive RGB neon installation as part of the set. Every letter of "GUYS" and "DOLLS" individually controlled, of course! The Guthrie in Minneapolis doesn't cut corners… except they forgot the "&" in the middle. 😉

man I wish we had a poundland equivalent in the US. we have dollar stores but they are much lower level than the kind of wicked neat stuff you guys get from poundland.
For the good versions of these neon-style signs it allows someone to have something they'd never be able to have and if someone offered custom signage they could easily make a good killing with this as millennials would dive deep for stuff like this as it would really make them happy and then MORE HAPPY!
The electro-luminescent wire is good for making small neon-like signs, the downside is that it isn't bright enough for anything but dark conditions and a bit on the thin side.
I have been trying to find something like this only much thinner. I have found that EL wire is small enough but is not very visible in the light of day. Is there something that would work in a small diameter?
They're going to be better because they will be less susceptible to thermal and mechanical shocks. Much like led stoplights are better. But they can falter eventually like anything else.

I'm making an outdoor sign for my business, do you have any recommendations for the best led neon rope to use for that application? Will need something to hold up, have close cut points, and continuious glow.
A bit more effort on the middle of the "m" (which is a cursive n the way it's done) would help a bunch. A little trimming of the sides to have the plastic angled and pushed together then the join filled carefully with hot glue would improve the look. It's likely the factory that makes these has jigs with various length stops for cutting the pieces, wouldn't be difficult to have an angled jig to cut ends that need to make a sharp bend. Might even be able to cut partway through from the side opposite the LEDs in order to get a tight bend, as long as the bend is between LEDs.
That would be electroluminescent tape or wire. It's a totally different technology to LED and requires fairly high voltage (50-120 VAC) though nothing like as high aa neon. They were very sensitive to moisture and would degrade relatively quickly, don't know if its improved in that respect now.
@bigclivedotcom I have a question maybe you can help me out. I have a raspberry pi 3 B I have a audio amp that is connected to 5v on gpio and ground on gpio. I have the audio amp connected for audio in using the 3.5mm Jack on the rpi3 B. The audio works but it has this distortion when the rpi3 is working or when reading microsd or when CPU is working its so loud and sounds like a modem over a phone line. I have tried using a transformer to cancel the ground noise this works a little bit but not as good. I need a good circuit diagram to cancel this ground noise. I don't know where to start. I could get a ground noise filter but the space is limited. Do you have a PCB plan that can achieve this goal? Thanks in advance.

I'm interested to see if there's any fibre optic solutions to fake neon.signs. I read about a version using lasers and glass, but it seemed pointless as if you're going as far as to make a glass sign you may as well put some electrodes in and fill it with neon.
So you're saying it's better to power longer length low voltage led from both ends ( positive one end & negative at other end ) to help prevent voltage drop.
Good video Clive. Have you looked at the 12V Flexible Neon EL Wire that is also being sold ? I believe there is also a 3V and maybe 5V version. The technology is different as it uses a high voltage pulse to excite an oxide coating on copper wire to make it glow (as I understand it). It would be interesting to see how it compares to the LED tape. Apparently the step up inverters can be a tad noisy on some. The low voltage versions are fed from two 1.5 cells. Cheers Rob

Clive, ever considered a piece on peltier modules, Im planning to build a small solar powered (via a battery) air con unit, think cool stream of air rather than trying to cool a room. I have, but didn't make a video about it. It's a stainless steel inner container with a heating element welded directly on and a thermal switch that cuts out once the temperature shoots up (container dry). The output to the lid fan is just switched from the power input.
Maybe getting dimmer at one end can happen in real neon tubes when driven with DC and mercury migrates to the one end of the tube, I have seen this effect with T8 fluorescent tubes._
The dream sign with the even light looks very good and I also like the palm tree as the variation of the green mimics real life,, the flamingo with it fading on one side not so good and the last one is a mess as the 'A' is unreadable.

What's better for trying to repair power supplies, a thermal camera or an oscilloscope.. I can only afford one until next month.. I have 20+ TV's that are 50+ inches up to 75, that I've collected and want to repair but my little meter and my knowledge stops there lol..
I wonder how many years it will take before that thermoformed clear plastic turns yellow and starts cracking... (edit:) Maybe the aging process could be accelerated with the Germicidal UV Lamp of Death. >:-)

There is a dim patch, possibly an LED or two has died. It won't be due to voltage drop since its very close to the supply. Some of the other letters also have dim areas but mainly around the tight curves.
Just need to construct a circuit that makes them flicker like a faulty neon sign, just for that authentic ambience... :P
And buzz like an old transformer.

They do a 6mm wide version of the LED neon.

DC doesn't become noticeable untill 24v or so, you are pretty unlikely to ever get a shock off led tape

armisteadab, background noise. I managed to get it a little quite but now i here is static and pop's from the speaker when no sound is playing.
LED will never have the look of the noble gases. NEVER.
It can ita just like people cannot fly over oceans never never so no I think its possible
and it will never have the price tag of those noble gases and their electric bill either :-)
If you wrap the ends with a bit of black electrical tape then it would look like many actual neon signs imo.

No. The mains voltage version is about the same intensity, flickers and can only be cut at quite wide sections.

They used side-glow fibre for a while, but it doesn't look good.

I've explored EL wire in previous videos. It's very dim and reduces in intensity further over time.

Technically the 'm' in the dream neon is an 'n'. They were being cheap and didn't include the second arch of the m.
I think the "m" in "dream" would have the same issue with real neon. I don't think you can bend a neon tube that much.
With a real neon sign, they would have ducked straight down at the bend and double back to the top behind the front tube I suppose...
I wonder how many years it will take before that thermoformed clear plastic turns yellow and starts cracking... (edit:) Maybe the aging process could be accelerated with the Germicidal UV Lamp of Death. >:-)

I forget to turn off my flamingo nearly every night.
Don´t want to be a party pooper, but the brighness on the "r" of the "dream" sign seems to be quite a bit dimmer. So, no even brightness at all.
There is a dim patch, possibly an LED or two has died. It won't be due to voltage drop since its very close to the supply. Some of the other letters also have dim areas but mainly around the tight curves.
