My oldest son has spread the word on these mushrooms for years. He's a medicinal mushroom fanatic.
Wow, I am in exactly the same position, my oldest son is the same.
I'm going to be foraging for this for my dog. He was just diagnosed with cancer. I could just buy capsules but im sure that fresh is much better and it's very prevalent in my area
My pup was confirmed cancer positive yesterday. I will be foraging this for him since its prevalent in my area.
Glad to be your first comment. Found some turkey tail and now I'm ready
O’my goodness I just found some of these on my old wood and thought that looks like turkey tail ( not even knowing for sure ) but I took a piece of off it and I want you to know this was just yesterday I got the piece , God is SOoo good all the time. I just got done doing up my goldenrod and thought okay now what. And I came to your video and let me tell you Heidi, Thank you so much. God knows exactly what he’s doing. I’m so happy right now. I now know what my next is 😂 thank you , God is good all the time.❤
Turkey tail is the real deal. Definitely worth trying out. I need to try and go find some. Usually find a bunch out in the woods.
Just did my first successful Turkey Tail, and found a bunch of Artist Conk with I just learned of the day before.
Mushroom hunting added a level of fun to hiking in the woods. ...plus I have a new puppy who I am totally in love with so it was great, shes a perfect hiking buddy. Gosh I missed a dog in my life, lost my old girl a year ago. Made my first cuppa this morning. I just added it a few pieces to my coffee water to boil a minute let it steep and made my coffee as per usual. There was no discernable flavor and if ya didn't know ya wouldn't know it wasn't regular ol' cup of instant coffee made with plain water.
Thanks for the great tips as per usual.
Do you tincture them fresh or dried? I already bought the vody, just not sure of the method, I know herbs are to be fresh and a tad wilted to remove excess moisture, are shrooms the same?
I tinctured mine dried
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you,
Have a great rest of your day
Hi Heidi, I use Turkey tail everyday. Harvest it dry it in dehydrator then make a double distilled tincture. I started making my own tinctures a couple years ago. Now I have a spot just for my herbs. I have tinctures in jars ready to be put into the bottles. I wish more people would look into these mushrooms for healing they really work.
I'm going to try to come back later to see how others are using turkeytail
very timely and informative - I'm just straining my turkey tail tincture to day and wait to try it as necessary
For the first time I saw mushrooms growing out of a tree trunk. I need to search it out.
I appreciate the details. I noticed a log in my yard that has this turkey tail mushroom on it. I seen it a month ago. Was waiting to inquire to be sure. Niiice
Please go watch the documentary "Fantastic Fungi" it is an eye opener. Turkey Tail and Lions's Beard are the only mushrooms really put through tests for cancer prevention and treatment. I am post cancer and am planning to grow my own, Turkey Tail, Chicken of the Wood and Lion's Beard
What about shitake?
Thank you, Heidi, for the links to identify. Turkey Tail. I sure need to try to find them in Missouri.
I Love turkey tail. I just found a bunch this morning along with a gob of chicken of the woods, one old man of the woods and a big stand of Indian pipe, it was a good mushroom foray this morning. I add turkey tail and chaga to my coffee grounds when I brew it.
I’ve had turkey tail mushroom in coffee, it was a ground into the coffee purchased that way. Delicious 😋
I love brewing Chaga tea grind and adding other ingred. with mushrooms being one of them.
I grind several mushrooms up and use it in my coffee with coconut oil. It is great!
Great info. I'll save to take notes from after work.
We have turkey tails on our log pile!! I wasnt sure they were good for anything because u never see them listed on commercial mushroom supplements. We r excited to use them now!
Contrary they are in most commercial super mushroom supplements lol
Thank you Heidi!
A bowl of mushroom soup would have been da jam yesterday. I had the crud.🤨 Those are just beautiful! 🤩
Blessings always! 💜
Great info! Thanks, now on my way to check out the link!
Awesomeness 👌 ❤ Thank you so much hun 😊 I need this ❤️
Hey Heidi & thank you for doing a video on turkey tail mushrooms 🥰🥰
You can also take the mushrooms while they are fresh and put them in a food processor and grind them up really fine and then lay the paste out on a cookie lines sheet tray, and dehydrate it in your over on it's lowest setting until it's dried. After it's dired you can put it in a spice gringer or blender and make it into a fine powder
Happy for this informative video! Thank you!
Good informational video, thanks for sharing, God bless !
I have started a spiral notebook of Benefits ofs. Grateful to have.
Oh my goodness your hair and your skin ❤
I enjoyed this video thank you very much.
I know it is ridiculous but, when i make a savory "tea"... it subconsciously helps to call it broth... because broths are generally savory and teas generally sweeter... but both are a water infusion And the differentiation may help a loved one prepare for the first taste expecting something different, finding it more pleasant..
for example.. My oldest daughter, beautiful, talented and slightly sadistic to her siblings.. offered her little brother some california roll (veg-"sushi") calling it cake... well of course her 4 year old brother popped it right in and commenced to spitting and sputtering... prejudicing him too cali-rolls, (and not trusting his sister again for years i might add)... However now he loves cali-rolls, and may have then... had he not been expecting cake... :)
I love mushroom broths so i just run with it adding savory spices.. I use most of my mushrooms in cooking, as my Gson has a recent aversion to most veggies, but he loves mushrooms, so it is a great way to sneak in some other veggies under that savory mushroom goodness.. like onions peppers, zucchini, broccoli, lambs quarters (but never carrots - he always knows) haha :)
Excellent video & extremely ckear pictures of the mushrooms .Thanks heaps
Thank you 🙏
Great info.
Thanks Heidi 😊 ❤️ ❤️
Hi Heidi! Do you ever do the double extraction method with mushrooms so you can get both the beta-glucans (water soluble) as well as the triterpenes (alcohol soluble)
I have heard this too how do you do that?
You soak the mushrooms in vodka for 4 weeks. Put the mushrooms into a pan covered with water and simmer for about 2 hours, adding more water as needed. Add to alcohol tincture. They say 20% volume of the tea to the alcohol tincture.
@@Ozarkmountainoutback1 Thank you for the info!!
Back in thr 1970s I saw the most beautiful huge wreath that used these things..or what looked like them...im pushing 80 and there is one thing i know for sure...if i could pick a poisonous one ...i would...i only have bad luck...im even sus about the ones in usa stores...lol
How do you make a tincture with Lions Mane?
Heidi, what would something white in a tincture? I tinctured wild lettuce one quart and one half pint. The half pint has something white on one side of the bottom of the glass. I would like to know if anyone has encountered this and knows what it might be?
Thank you, Heidi. I really like learning from your videos. You are amazing! ❤
What kind of solvent did you use?
@@RainCountryHomestead 80 proof vodka
Thank you for this video! We found several downed trees today with turkey tail mushrooms in different stages. I found a “new batch” that were bright in color. I’m going back to harvest them this afternoon. The others I thought looked a bit old. Anyhow..thank you for the video and link. I’ll be dehydrating in a few hours! Did I miss the temp you use for dehydrating the mushrooms?
I dehydrate most herbs around 115°. I cover this in my many dehydrating videos. I do not always think to mention it in videos like this particular type
@@RainCountryHomestead I’ll check them out! Thank you.
Please do a video on the benefits and usage of usnea. Its something I need to try and start using.
On another note a dual tincture of turkey tail or other mushrooms like reishi is the best way to go for full benefits. A high proof alcohol tincture and a decoction mixed together at a particular ratio to where the alcohol aspect is still strong enough to preserve everything without going bad. Some of the actives are water soluble but others not and vice versa with alcohol extraction. Only way to get the complete benefit is the dual extraction tincture. I'd personally do a mix of mushrooms to including turkey tail, reishi, and chaga at least if not also adding cordicepts, mitaki, and lionsmane too.
Benefits and Uses of Usnea: th-cam.com/video/8BbdN0EyDyI/w-d-xo.html
Your intro video contained a fungi or two of non turkey tail fungi maybe a sterrium sp.
Heidi, how much do you use in a cup of tea and can you use that cup of turkey tail tea more than once?
I put a couple of dried pieces in a pot of tea with other herbs or a single piece in my coffee cup, that piece I use for a few days in my coffee
Just love you girl!..Sorry I don't say that enough ❤😊
I'm taking australian Lions mane in liquid form x
🙏
Hi Heidi, please tell us how to cut the mushrooms off the wood how much do we leave and will it grow back?
I simply cut close to the wood rather than pulling it out by the roots
How much moisture does turkey tail have? I have a fairly local source of dried mushrooms (various kinds) or an online source of fresh mushrooms, and I'm wondering how to compare pricing. Does one pound of fresh mushroom equal two ounces dry, four ounces dry, etc. Thank you!
I cannot say how much as I did not think to weigh them before dehydrating but there is a significant difference in weight of before and after
Do they tend to grow in certain areas / climates / seasons, or types of trees? I'm in the Sierra Nevadas, CA about 4k feet. Generally no rain June thru Oct, rarely noticeable humidity, temps to mid, high 90's, then freezing and snowy winters. I've checked my immediate area and would like your opinion before I try trekking in the woods. I can do that, but it's not super easy with fibromyalgia.
I know they grow in many places but I cannot say for very arid climates. Mushrooms of just about any variety need moisture
@@RainCountryHomestead Thank you ❤
Please be mindful when you are collecting. She forgot we share the forest with so many species like turtles, squirrels and of course slugs all of them eat the mushrooms. Tree frogs they use mushrooms to sleep and hunt for food. So please don't remove all of the Mushroom ❤ happy hunting
I always say to only harvest 1/3 of them, so there will be plenty in years to come. I understand that they are "just the fruiting body," but that's my point. They can spread by spores as well as the underground (I can't spell the proper word....mycelium, I think).
I found some today on an old stump growing right on top of it. Is it safe to wash the mushrooms off then dry em out? Or will that affect them? Godpeed for sharing
You can rinse them, which is what I do if they seem especially dirty but do not soak them in any form. Many will just use brushes to remove the dirt
@@RainCountryHomestead Thank you very much!
I have an aunt in Illinois who goes foraging for both turkey tails and hen of the woods. Sadly, I am never there when they do this. I’m pretty sure the shelf mushrooms I found are not turkey tail. They are shades of cream. I have to keep looking. Many Blessings!
Is Hen of the Woods different from Chicken of the Woods or is it just another name for it?
@@RainCountryHomestead yes two different, hens if I recall are found mostly at the bottom of Oaks and are kind of gray and frilly, imagine a bouquet of turkey tails all bunched up.
I found a great mushroom ID site recently Ill see if I can find for you.
@@thebandplayedon..6145 This would explain why I did not know that as we do not have have oak trees here. Mostly conifers in our area
@@RainCountryHomestead I have no idea, it’s probably the same thing or I just got the name wrong. 🤷♀️
Was your Turkey tail mushroom hard growing on the trees ? Mine is very hard like a rock, but still growing . ❤😊
While it was not super soft, it was not hard either, easy enough to cut through
Are you sure is healthy for consumption?
I got a huge Turkey tail off my dying tree . It is completely dried out . Can I ground it up and use it .
I am not sure without seeing it. I have seen dead turkey tail and it tends to turn white. I do not use that
If you turn it into a tincture, do you dehydrate it first?
I do, yes
@@RainCountryHomestead , thank you. I was lucky enough to find some Lion's Mane at the health food store, so I am turning it into a tincture to get the most out of it.
does anyone sell their harvest of turkey tail? can i order some from anyone?
I don't know if you ve'gotten...
I live in nashville tn and I order my shroom products from charlesmyco_

The link you provided has the "totally true turkey test" link by Michael Kuo. He reports at the end of his identifying test that there are no health benefits at all. The only benefit is the excersize that you get from looking for them. He states the anti-cancer benefits are not true.
That link was only about identification and the only reason I provided it. I do not simply trust what one person says but do the research across the board such as places like this: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7277906/
or this:
www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/patient/mushrooms-pdq
I checked the link and didn't see it. So I checked several pages of the website for what you mentioned and still didn't find it. What I did find was a website to a Harvard educated endocrinologist by the same name who I'm guessing is not an advocate of any kind of alternative medicine. Maybe it was piggybacked onto the site because of the name?
@thistlemoon1 We must have commented at the same time but I just put two .gov links in the comment above about trials with Turkey Tail on Cancer and immune therapy and there are many more out there
it was stated there and the list of cancers it helped. Japan has used it for years with no side effects.@@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead
I only mentioned it so that you were aware of the contradiction. I definitely do not trust any mainstream "doctors or scientists." Nature is where we will find good nutrition and medicine, as God has made it.
